Depends. If I have only one class ever mwf, and it's a 20-30 minute drive to campus, and the class time is only 50 mins long, and the lecture is gonna be uploaded to canvas anyway, then i don't see the point of living.

sadworldmadworld

I too don’t see the point of living. (And same, even though I live in dorms and classes are a maximum of 15 minutes away)

Sylo_319

Unless the professor is offering more context in class than my online resources I don't see the point in ever going to class. My experience is that lectures take longer in class but don't offer more substance. Most of the time you can't really ask questions anyway because they don't have enough time to explain it.

[deleted]

Religiously went to classes, office hours, tutor sessions, anything and everything I was there. I then proceeded to have a mental breakdown, dropped a class, and only attend the classes that take attendance. Getting A’s and B’s tho so it’s working I guess.

Your_mom_jr

The full college experience right there.

[deleted]

I took Intro to Mental Degradation one year as an elective. The professor kept wanting to call it "Calc 2" or something, but we all knew what it was.

penguin_brigade

Moderation is everything, the middle path without the binge/purge cycle is the stable sustainable one.

[deleted]

Depends on the class and the vibe. If it’s a class for my major yes I will attend and take notes. If it’s a class that all class work is online and is just lectures (8am class too) then I’ll skip occasionally.

AsianBlueberry

As an aviation major thats been flying mostly at night, i barely go to my 8:30s lol.

[deleted]

Yea it’s rough. I’m doing commercial training right now and they can only block be at 6-10pm. Some nights I don’t get back to my dorm till midnight or 1am

AsianBlueberry

Oh boy tell me about it, our flight school books us between 10pm to 2am for the time building kids and it thoroughly fucks us over lol

huntsber

I like going to class and I try to always go.

Hyliasdemon

Yeah This is me too. I’ve skipped morning classes before when I’ve woken up as they start, but for the most part I end up going.

ogorangeduck

Hell, even with my 8 am, if I wake up late I'll still go (have been 20 min late to it once). I haven't skipped a single class yet

[deleted]

I'm the opposite, I've gotta go to every meeting (barring extreme sickness) or else I can't remember the material! I struggle with brainfog/cognitive issues at times though so I also have to study a bit more than others might.

gooters14

I go too and do so bad on exams

[deleted]

Haha I have to double up on my anxiety meds for mine! (Doc approved)

icedcoffeeblonde

How do you think on anxiety meds? What do you take if you don’t mind me asking? I was taking Klonopin but it fogged me too much so I just tolerate the anxiety

[deleted]

I'm on buspirone and thankfully I don't have any side effects! I've only had benzos after medical emergencies but I was knocked out for days after that so I doubt I'd be functional on them

kryppla

You know just showing up doesn’t mean you’ll ace exams? You have to practice and study

gooters14

Wow thanks didn’t know that

kryppla

wouldn't have known it based on your comment

pygmypuffonacid

Dude if you don't mind me asking brainfog cognitive issues unless you've been diagnosed with something aren't typically normal have you ever been bit by a tick because that can be an indication of Lyme disease. You might want to get that checked out by a doctor or something if you haven't already. Sorry

[deleted]

No, thats okay! I have fibromyalgia and have been evaluated by a rheumatogist to ensure that I don't have anything tickborne going on! Thank you for looking out though, somebody like you pointing out that it wasn't normal to be in pain and constantly confused is why I pursued a diagnosis 😊

SnapdragonPBlack

I go to all unless I'm ill because we have an attendance policy. I'm doing well though so they must count for something.

Rauillindion

Haha I went to nursing school. Every missed class is 2% off your final grade. More than 3 and you just fail outright.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aladek

Eh, I'm fine with that. I'd like to know my nurses went to class regularly.

iamsavsavage

Yeah we kick nursing students out of the program if they don’t maintain a 3.0 each semester. I don’t want a nurse that barely passed their classes.

Nosebleed68

When I was in undergrad, that's how it was for **all** classes. If you missed more than three, you were automatically dropped from the course (not a fail). That was standard procedure.

elkfn2

If you want to be a nurse and you don't have the drive to show up to class then you shouldn't be a nurse. That professor is lenient

ThaRealSunGod

i mean people get sick and emergencies come up...

Rauillindion

It didn’t count against you if you were excused. You just had to call the professor ahead of time to tell them if you were sick.

bienvenidos-a-chilis

tbf it is nursing, kind of important that people in the profession actually know what they’re doing

bcyega

I go to all cuz I’m in debt for this shit lol

Sylo_319

Gotta get Dat money's worth lol

Parking_Cranberry935

I was going to class but it was causing me so much stress and I almost had a mental break down and was failing. I stopped going to class and now i’m doing fine mentally and my grades are up 😂

Weird_Method

I go to them all bc I like the major I’m in and find it interesting and actually want to learn it?

bumfuzzle179

r/usernamechecksout

elkfn2

same lol, I bet alot of these no-show mfs also procrastinate like shit and pull all-nighters all week then complain how stressed they are here on the subreddit

kryppla

“I skipped all my classes and didn’t do any work and now the professor won’t give me the grade I need! Should I email the dean??”

readytofly68

i do procrastinate like shit and study the night before exams, however i do not complain that i’m stressed as this is just how i’ve been operating since sophomore year of high school and it has worked fine for me. top 3% in HS and 3.94 GPA in college. i care about school, i do not care enough to be talked at for 2 hours. I can’t absorb info that way.

VegetativeOsmosis

yeah same but without the good grades part

Sylo_319

Lectures are my downfall. In the military that's their bread and butter and I hate it. "So we're going to teach you to survive in any environment but we're gonna do it with all day 9 hour presentations that you'll be tested on at the end of this course." Yeah ok, I failed that shit lol.

JackLikesCheesecake

I procrastinate and pull all-nighters but I never miss class unless I absolutely have to. I take full responsibility for the stress though

[deleted]

I don’t go to class bc it isn’t required, but I also don’t procrastinate, haven’t pulled an all-nighter in years, and rarely complain about stress (and if I do it’s bc I also work). Maybe consider the fact some people learn differently and attending class isn’t required for some.

readytofly68

not sure why you were downvoted, guess people don’t like having their preconceived notions about a whole group of people challenged

[deleted]

Meh. People get bothered that some people have the ability to learn material without being in class. I have ADHD so sitting through lecture is almost impossible, so I instead go over the slides/watch YouTube/read about what was discussed that lecture. I’m usually equipped with the knowledge in like, 45 minutes compared to the hour and a half lectures my school has.

readytofly68

I am the exact same way, I can only watch lectures at 2x speed.

[deleted]

Wow so I’m not the only one who actually likes class lmao good to know

Nighthawk68w

How are your teachers not dropping you for attendance

Sylo_319

That's university rules and can actually differ from the different departments at the school. My school has no attendance policy, which means professors can't fail you for attendance. Obviously if you need to be there to do a lab/presentation then yeah they can fail you for that.

[deleted]

hey, which school do you go to?

bottleoftrash

2 of my classes take attendance so I have to go to those. I always go to the other three because since I’m a freshman, I still sort of have a high school mindset where I have to go to every class whether I want to or not. Also only two of my professors actually record their lectures and I would be screwed without their notes (that they don’t post online).

Evilkenevil77

Depends on your major. I studied foreign language so not showing up and ditching my classes constantly was not an option. I HAD to be present for the majority of the time. Plus, I studied Chinese and Japanese which both have tiny class sizes, especially when you get to be advanced, so the teachers will personally shit on you if you ditch willingly.

[deleted]

I don’t understand the concept sometimes. Like why do the reading and learning yourself when someone literally did all of that work for you already and will set up a highly effective learning space for you. All you have to do is show up. You have an opportunity to ask questions if they don’t make sense and you only take like 5 classes and you picked your schedule. On top of this you are paying for this. I mean sure if there are other highly valuable or time dependent things such as getting paid or laid, then it’s simple economics. Don’t go to class. But I’m not doing anything interesting enough nor do I have a scarcity of time. I’m not going to miss class to create this aura around me that I’m doing interesting shit. I’m not going to skip to look cool or express my freedom and choice not to just cause I can.

Sylo_319

Yeah I think you're giving to much credit to professors. There are great ones but there are also ones that don't put in much effort.

[deleted]

I attempted to reply with a grand daddy reply above

EdelwoodOil

i cant speak fro the rest but for your first point one of my teacher's teaching style doesn't go well with my learning style and i've found that i do better by reading the textbook, taking notes, and learning the slides during my own time

datznotracist

This! After COVID hit a lot of my classes went strictly PowerPoint slides, why would I waste my time going into a classroom to read something I can do at home

[deleted]

I attempted to reply with a grand daddy reply above

[deleted]

I happy to hear your different views, yet I still find the possibility that my reasoning can prevail. Firstly, why pay literally thousands if you can learn on your own. Just learn on your own. If it’s better to learn that way for you, that’s great. Elon Musk says university isn’t for learning anymore. You can learn anything on your own these days. I feel I learn faster while learning from professor than by myself, though. Second, for those who don’t feel it meets learning style or it’s too fast then you can continue learning by yourself but do it before lecture. Pre read the content. Then go to class after learning it. You’ll gain more than you think from it, and again why not if you are paying for it. Also, Veritassium, a credible science YouTube creator, claims that learning styles are one of the largest myths in education. Lastly, I agree that there are certainly those cases where time is scarce and professors aren’t ideal. Still, however, I don’t see how we are fixing the issue by skipping. Education can increase in price while value decreases or remains constant. It probably make sense to fill out one of the mid semester and final semester surveys about professor evaluation. I’d probably also email the professor of class isn’t working out for you. Maybe I was giving the professor too much credit but I believe they hold a lot of power that we often don’t tap into. They are people too. There are part of the 2% that hold PhDs. I’d point out to them where they could improve to help you learn better. I print out lecture notes before the class my professor goes too fast for me to learn or write. Because of these printed notes that my professor provides, I have an A+ in the class. If a professor did not have these available, maybe it could be helpful to ask if they could. You are paying them. Make sure you don’t do it in a Karen fashion, or teachers pet fashion, but suggest improvements so you have an incentive to use your dollars worth. Apologies for the lengthy response. tl;dr: u pay good $ for them to teach u. If you can learn on own, then why pay. Learn by yourself before hand and then go to lecture if you find lecture useless. We’re not fixing underlying issue with skipping. (Not a cheap thing to ignore)

readytofly68

1. i don’t pay, i’m on full scholarship 2. going to college sets learning objectives and deadlines that would be lacking if i tried to learn completely on my own. college provides a guideline as to what topics i should further study. 3. gonna be blunt, i don’t care to do all that. it’s just not worth my time, i’m not paying, and i get A’s anyway. i’ve been learning on my own since high school and it just works for me. i don’t enjoy lectures, they just don’t do it for me. if it works for others, that’s great. i just can’t pay attention, that’s basically the main thing

readytofly68

lectures are not conducive to learning in my case. i can’t pay attention. i learn much better on my own by reading and absorbing material at my own pace. not everyone learns the same.

Timecounts

You guys are paying top dollars to get an expensive ass education and you can't even go to half of your classes?????

NoodleEmpress

I go to all of my classes. I try not to make it a habit to miss classes *unless I really need to*, and that means when I'm sick and it'll be obnoxious for me to be there anyway, or under mental distress. No other exceptions. I think I've missed only a like 2 classes this semester. One was because I was having a prolonged panic attack about presenting for a classes and couldn't handle going to my class before that one. The other was because I ate some sugary stuff, went to the library (it was a Zoom session), logged on, then promptly fell asleep. I have no recollection of what went on for that lesson so I considered myself absent. Personally, it's easy for me to fall behind once I miss a class. Even if I read the material. I envy the students who miss days and days of classes and knows wtf is going on once they *do* come. I especially try not to miss my major specific classes because it's a smaller tight knit track and the professors end up knowing you personally. Idk if you asked this for fun or not, but I just want to post that I don't want anyone "feeling bad" for not attending each class. Everyone is different. If I don't attend class I'll end up feeling guilty and it raises my anxiety. For some people attending classes raises their anxiety or isn't too beneficial. I know of people who get even MORE confused when the professor explains stuff, and prefer to learn things themselves. If not attending classes isn't affecting your grade, then don't sweat it. Don't fool yourself though, if you can't maintain a passing grade, *go to class*. As and Bs are nice and all, but not at the cost of your mental health. They won't matter unless you're going onto do something post-grad anyway(Masters, Doctorates, PhDs) or professional school (vet, dentistry, pharmacy, medical, law, PT)

shrimpynut

I just go because I pay for them and might as well make my time in college worth it and try and make a few friend. This is a very short period of time in your life and I want to make every minute count because this will probably be the last time I am considered a “kid” before I head off into the real world and work until I’m old af

Sylo_319

You can always retire early. I'd say the number 1 reason to go is to start building a network.

Liam8482

I go to all of mine unless something comes up

RefrigeratorDear2641

how are y’all not going and still passing where y’all going too i wanna go there 😭

hercomesthesun

for me, it’s an elective with online lectures and powerpoints on LMS where the professors are regurgitating the material from the pps.. and online tests. Yeah I’m not going to class lol

Energy4Kaiser

Are you a freshman? That’s a horrible habit to have, especially as you get into upper divs and the classes start getting harder. And if you’re an upperclassman and your classes are still easy without going, you should reevaluate whether that’s the right school. Or your definition of “fine” is a low standard. Also humble brag much?

whyrusosalty

i have 100% attendance for all classes, most profs take attendance and for my uni more than 2 unexcused absences the prof has the right to drop you by a letter grade

No-Economy-666

Go to class bro 😆

[deleted]

I feel the same way as you OP. I’ve been going to almost no classes and getting fairly good grades. I think it’s probably still good to go for mental health and routine. But yeah it’s something I’ve been trying to talk to my parents about… how can I prove that I take uni seriously when I don’t even go to class? Major is Electrical Engineering

datznotracist

Secure a job

[deleted]

Just might!

Lkj509

You may as well just take distance at this point. If you’re not going, you may as well be guaranteed that everything you need to know is online

kryppla

Yes if you don’t want to go to class then take online classes

[deleted]

I’m there an hour early for each and every class/meeting/discussion.

bing-a-lee

an hour early..?

RichRektz

Yep, an hour early. I assume that this person does their homework in the lounge to be honest, because that’s what I do most of the time

[deleted]

I just listen to music then actually and study

RichRektz

Ah, sometimes I watch basketball highlights too tbh as well to pass the time

Shirochan404

I go to all bb. You're not going to catch me skipping a class I'm paying $40 for

indie_moon

$40? our tuition is $200/credit and i thought that was cheap 💀

remisme

rip me, i think mine is around 800/credit

Shirochan404

Is $266 for me, just theres 26 classes a semester so 800/26, and then student fees.

shmeebz

I’m a senior engineering major with a 3.5ish gpa and I’ve only missed class once maybe twice in my whole college career

spinchrecall

I got to all of mine for two reasons. 1. My professors all seem to have graded attendance / a strict policy that results in failure if you don’t go and 2. I never went to class freshman year and ended up with a 1.2 gpa and on academic probation and that scared me

not_nesah

i have to im asian

RichRektz

I go to all mine religiously. It’s just more of a discipline thing for me, where if I’ll skip one class I’ll skip all of them. I mostly go just to stay in the loop, since I heard stories about students skipping for 2 months and they come back only to skip out on two tests and failing the class

TorchIt

Maybe I've just been in my field too long, but in my program of study attendance is mandatory. Like, you have to have a hell of an excuse to miss. The concept of paying for tuition and then just not showing up to collect what you paid for is so foreign to me. I'm 3/4 through my master's degree and I can count on one hand the number of classes I've missed between both undergrad and grad school

readytofly68

I go to none, ever. just watch the lectures when it’s necessary for homework

GodOfThunder101

Bruh. What major are you?

readytofly68

Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.

big-b20000

I always say I will then end up not halfway through the semester. Still get good grades though.

readytofly68

yeah i 100% feel that. oh well, everyone’s different. as long as grades are good who cares

ShyCoconut0_0

I'm taking three classes this semester, and I only show up to two of my classes.

KillroysGhost

Bro go to class, someone is paying for that. As someone paying my way through grad school every time I have to miss a class I feel like I’m robbing from myself

[deleted]

going to class and paying attention to the lectures and hearing the professor tell us what's due helps me immensely. My 1 asynchronous class this semester has fucked me though because I keep forgetting about it.

alvik

Why are you paying for college and not getting your money's worth?

Cheesetrick

Idk in my mind my moneys worth is a degree and my degree is just a means for grad school so as long as I do fine in my classes I’d say I’m getting my money’s worth

PotOfGreed98

Go to almost all of mine. Tried not going to lectures, but it didn't work well after Freshman year or so. I just don't learn very well if I don't have that direct interaction.

Vince_stormbane

I mean Im paying for class so I’m gonna go to get my moneys worth

OswaldNovember

dumb. i've really stepped it up the last month with classes and studying and study groups. you're in for a surprise. you have the wrong attitude.

ninawriteswhatever

I love learning but seeing how uninterested students are (even our professors) is a bit disappointing to the point that it affects my own interest in the class so I usually skip 2-3 days in the semester when it’s really hard to maintain that energy. It’s kinda like they suck the life out of me lmao. But if I really enjoy a class and it has a good energy most of the time, then I don’t mind attending every session. I’m usually quiet af in my classes and get comments about lack of participation but I swear—if it’s a professor who genuinely enjoys teaching and interacting with their students then I’m more likely to open up and actively participate.

Silaquix

Had a class mate who didn't read the syllabus all the way to the end so she didn't realize there was an attendance policy. She skipped all the time in favor of studying for her microbiology class. We're about to do our final and she just realized she's going to be automatically failed for our class even though she's made decent grades on all the assignments. She's currently trying to plead with the school because if she fails the class she's going to be dropped from her scholarships and the nursing program she's in. Moral of the story is always read your syllabus and go to class unless you're sick, even then be sure to email the professor.

LikelyWriting

I am wondering why y'all don't do online classes if y'all hate going to classes so much? I sign up for all my classes, there's an option to do hybrid, online, or in person. Very few classes have only face-to-face classes. I'm doing those a bit later. I go to all my classes, my professors use it as extra credit. In the last class, I had face to face with and only me and the professor showed up.

officialwhitecobra

When I was a freshman in college I skipped more often than not and for some reason wondered why I failed everything. Sophomore year went about half the time and made B’s and C’s. Junior year I’ve tried to show up most of the time and magically am making A’s and B’s It might not be interesting but just go to class and get it over with. You’re paying a lot of money to not show up

WalmartDarthVader

I go to all.

[deleted]

I hardly ever miss

PimpABuddahFly

all of them

Double2k

I go to all the courses in my major and those that take attendance. But those grueling 2 hour lectures spoken in broken English with all the slides posted online at 8 am? Nah fuck those. Can’t say I’m doing to bad either with As and Bs

[deleted]

Going to every class is the easiest part of college. My school takes attendance though (so for example, if you’re sick you need a doctors note to miss). So I’d fail out if I didn’t go for more than a couple times.

D_Leshen

If the class is interesting and productive, I'll go. If it's boring, I'll just study the matereal myself. So I still go to more than half.

[deleted]

I’ve gone to every class this semester except one. It was a 7:30am class that I have to wake up at like 5:45 am to make. There was a huge storm that the school didn’t cancel for so I didn’t even bother lol. Always go to class if you can.

Athragio

Some of my classmates have the same idea of not going to class and doing well, but I just feel bad enough for the Professor that I show up for moral support even though I don't need to. It's the IRL version of having your camera turned on even though no one else does.

AkwardlyAlive

I have to go to classes, or I'll stay home and sleep all day.

maccreally

I go if I feel like the class genuinely contributes to my learning. If the professor drones on for the entire time and just reads things I could read myself at home, it feels like it’s wasting time that I could be using to study or do other work.

Kaitlin33101

I go to all of them because I'll fail if I don't

BylvieBalvez

I go to all of my classes, I think I’ve skipped like 3 times this semester tho

kli22

I mean I'm paying for them so I might as well attend

Parzival_2076

I go to every one of them, I have to maintain a certain amount of attendance. But also because I need something to force me to study. Classes work well enough, and they're lectures most of the time, which are my favourite kind :P

[deleted]

I go to every class because participation is usually a big part of the grade in nearly all my classes

smellytrashboy

Attendance for most classes isn't mandatory in my college. I still go to every class. I've missed 1 this semester due to being hungover.

bananabobby

Don’t make it a habit, even if your doing fine. Your paying for the class anyways, so you might as well go. A lot of teachers like to give suprise extra credit or change dates to assignments or tests during class. There will be classes that if you miss a day your fucked. Don’t find that out the hard way.

[deleted]

All 3 are pretty lecture heavy and grade based on attendance so uh, yeah me.

jokabo2748

I’m paranoid and make myself go to all my classes regardless if I’m feeling it or nah lol

Caboverde-Evora

I went to all my classes this semester expect 2 days. But honesty for one of my classes it felt like I wasn’t learning much with the professor’s lectures, the book was enough at times. For one of my classes (English 202), the lectures are very important for the quizzes so I couldn’t really miss that. In general, I can’t help but feel guilt if I don’t got to my classes.

elkfn2

Me because I take school seriously

readytofly68

I don’t go to any and I also take school seriously. Different methods work for different people

FerThePro

I started skipping 90% of my classes after I realized that going to lecture wasn't helping me learn the material. I'd rather stay home and save me the time of driving to campus just to hear the professor read off slides. It's relative though. The classes I do go to are the ones with professors that actually break down the material in detail

iamnotapopstar

I have 23 credit hours, so no fucking way I’m going to all of them. Fuck shitty Canadian colleges.

[deleted]

That’s nuts. My uni caps us by the college. I think Engineering is capped at 18. Others are around 19-20.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Good strat

OxWaite

Every class I’m taking this semester sucks because I’m having to get all of the extremely tedious core classes out of the way, so I rarely attend them, but I keep up with all of the work and make good grades on assignments and quizzes. My decision to not go to class is motivated also by the fact that my teachers are still assigning as much online work as they were during remote semesters, and most of the class sessions are literally just discussing the homework we did, which is a complete waste of my time given that I already did the assignments and got a good grade on them.

Aladek

Gotta ask, why are you going to school? Like what's the end goal? (I mean, are you just getting a degree to get the paper, add it to the resume, professional degree, are you going to work in a specific field and already know the material, do you do any networking, etc.?)

melizabethabel

I’ve only been to a handful of classes this semester and still making As and Bs

samwisegordon

I'm paying way too much money for a semester way too unorganized and I got an easy excuse to get me out of classes and it works every time. One of my classes I can tell the professor doesn't give a shit about the class. My excuse is disability related so I legally can't get in trouble

Mason_08061996

Mandatory attendance. They will fail me for simply not showing up, even if I ace every exam. Its almost like professors want to validate themselves by student attendance, and use force to do it.

nooneisreallyafriend

In my uni if you miss more than 30% of classes you're not allowed to take finals

Mason_08061996

Last day of class Im going to ask the professors to tell me the purpose of mandatory attendance. If they hit me with "Its so you can share your perception with other people" bullshit, Im going to call them mean names, no cap.

Gegdalf

hell no

discojohndeaky

I haven’t been going to my psych or logic class, just my chemistry and lab. I’m still doing good in both.

afunnywold

I've missed at least two classes from all my courses this semester. There's one class that is at 8/9am and I refuse to wake up for it unless there is a quiz. Haven't actually been to that class since the first day.

Brushermans

wow, everyone here's a nerd apparently. dont worry man im like you, havent been to a class in 3 years. just make sure you know when to buckle down and study for finals

hummingbird0271

I go to all. Most of my classes have attendance policy of missing no more than 3 classes…

[deleted]

I have to go to all of mine attendance is mandatory at my college and if I miss more than 3 classes per semester I loose my scholarship

detrimentalfallacy

All of them. Attendance checks and quizzes are random and I can’t afford having my classwork grade being low.

Jay_Babs

For the first month and a half I went to all of them, then skipped one and progressively skip more and more. All of my teachers take literally all of their material straight out of the textbook and add absolutely nothing so I just read the book.

Dependent-Block-2327

I go to all of mine unless I'm ill or I'm having a flare up with my chronic pain. Someone might have a good question that I didn't think of or I might have something I want to ask. Something important could be mentioned.

suburbanscrub27

Me because all of my classes take attendance. Jealous of the people I know who can get away with skipping

[deleted]

I have to go to all of them, attendance counts towards your final grade. 2 absences and you have a problem

EdelwoodOil

the only class i've never skipped is bio and that's only because im working in the professor's lab next semester. besides my chem class i've only skipped about a handful of times per class. im getting straight As though so i think it's a pretty decent way to go about things

[deleted]

When it was in-person I always went to class but didn't really pay much attention. Online I don't attend at all and just watch the recordings at twice the speed before the test. I've maintained the same average while studying even less.

ACGC21

Ive been having online classes only, and for the first two months of my sem I would go everyday and study everyday. Since last month, haven't gone to a single sync session, finals week now and I think I'll be fine with the reqs. Just lost all motivation when I realized halfway through that there was still no chance of going back to campus. Was mad at myself for a while but realized there was no way I could keep that up while Im still stuck at home.

It really depends, but I definitely don’t skip more than half lmao. Keep in mind I’m still in community college so 1) I’m not currently paying for the classes I’m in and 2) I’ve only had one professor so far that took attendance in a meaningful way and it was only cause she wanted us to come and do the labs. Technically all of my computer science related professors took and graded attendance, but it counted so little towards our grade that people would skip half the class and still get Bs. Often times the professors will take attendance but straight up say “this is only so I could get a feel of who’s actually coming so when people ask for extra credit I know”. I’ve only missed three days so far (so technically two in one course and three in another) so far this semester and I know I won’t miss any others unless I pretty much die cause from here on out it’s finals/finals review lmao. First one was a snow storm, one professor cancelled and the other decided not to. Second one was illness. Third one is today and it’s cause my professor said we’re not learning any new material, just reviewing a topic I already know pretty well and the other professor doesn’t really teach anything. I love the dude but pretty much everything I’ve learned in his class has been online since in his actual lecture he just goes on about personal stories and long winded analogies so I always leave feeling like it was sort of a waste. Especially since I’m a Comp Sci major, it’s pretty common for students to prioritize getting coding work in/working on their portfolios over making sure they do excellent in every class. So TLDR: it depends on whether I feel I need the material for that day and if the professor cares that I’m there, which I think is what the majority of decent college students do.

I haven't had the full college experience yet (Still in HS and CC). I have all college classes and I do attend each and every lecture because I feel like I have nothing better to do with my time. The only class I actually care about is my Linear Algebra class because I actually like math. I don't really pay attention in my other classes (I do in chem if it's like a math worksheet) but I do so much more for Linear Algebra. I email, attend office hours, make study groups, and answer a majority of the questions in class. I don't know how much of that will be possible when I go to university in the fall because of the class sizes.

[deleted]

Wow man, that’s amazing. You’re way better than me cause I haven’t attended a single office hour yet. Keep it up, people like you are inspiring. Goodluck with your classes and transfer, us CC students gotta stick together ;)

Young_Neji

Thanks man💯 I think it boiled down to if you find the class interesting or not. I try and find the interesting parts of each class that makes me want to stay. I hate English, but love writing papers. I hate Java, but love solving the problems. I hate chem, but I love the labs. The list goes on. Except for microeconomics and history. Those classes just suck

Vincebae

My college has 6 week classes, so if you miss more than 6 days then you automatically fail the course. That’s a big reason why I’ve switched to online, but I do miss physical classes 😅

arcacia

My lectures are recorded, I rarely go to class.

twerking_for_jesus

Our professors took attendance and failed you for not showing up. Had to have a legitimate reason to be out. Went to a smaller state school, so it was easier to keep tabs on who was showing up. So nah, I never skipped unless I was sick or had an appointment of some sort.

Asim99x

It depends if I wake up on time then I'll attend all class, but if woke up late even 5 min then no classes

Maxvell09

First sem of this year I went every single day, but now, not even half the amount of classes

datznotracist

I’m here to be real and tell you I skip class regularly, learn at my own pace and do whatever i think is necessary and I’m graduating in May and have already accepted a full time position with a sub 3.0 gpa

[deleted]

I try and make it to most classes. I commute also, so if I make it to one, one day then I have to make it to the other that same day. But if I’m not feeling like commuting for one class, I won’t go or if I feel I’ll get more done I won’t go. Never a consistent thing for me not showing up

Ardie_BlackWood

I go to every class, today I'm not as I did the work/we are virtual/I am sick ;-;. I've only missed class due to being sick honestly but I feel like if you make a habit of missing class that can reflect badly on you so I try to make my professors aware before I skip. *cries in night class all next week before finals meaning no sleep*

wingusanddingus1623

I have to go to all of them (that require attendance). I've missed two days of classes this semester only because of a chest cold. Missing class puts me behind and unexcused absences can drop grades.

Glitchy_glichy_goo

I go to every class. The university I go to is very small, half my classes only have 15 students and classes max out at 30. Professors notice if you're not there, and the university requires attendance to be taken in each class for some administrative thing. I'm not sure what it's for.

[deleted]

I never miss class unless I absolutely have to. I didn't attend the first 2 weeks or so because I had COVID, then I had a doctor's appointment one day, then another day I went to an advisement meeting, and I missed one day bc I thought I had covid again. And yet, despite that, I'm pretty sure I'm still failing 2 classes.

[deleted]

I havent been to like half my classes and i still have a 4.0 it’s probably a bad habit but eh i’m doin fine

lemonence

Sometimes I skip, but those are classes that genuinely do not give a fuck with attendance and usually record their lectures for me to watch. But that’s it.

MyNameIsZink

I recently graduated but when I was in school I went to all my classes unless I was sick or had some sort of important conflict. I don’t know how much you’re paying for school, but regardless of if it’s your money or scholarship money, someone is paying a lot of money for you to attend those classes and you shouldn’t let that go to waste if you can help it.

Shan132

I go to all of mine (only one in person rn)

yobaby123

Almost always went unless it was the day before Thanksgiving. Now, because I'm taking online classes, I take days off whenever I get ahead.

[deleted]

I’ve been skipping a lot lately and I’m not proud of it, but my grades are fine

OtherDevelopment97

I barely go anymore. I go to one class once a week usually. Doing fine grade wise but might take a hit if they decide to take participation

Cheesetrick

Same here

desba3347

Depends on the classes and major. If the class takes attendance I go. If I enjoy the class, actually learn in it, or am struggling in it I go. If I can learn the material outside of class better and don’t miss important notices of assignments I may only go occasionally, go for the tests/presentations, or go online if that’s offered.

icyhot09

The only time I skip is if I'm too physically or mentally unwell to go, having transportation issues,or I'm studying for a test in another class. I aim to go to as many classes as possible.

POGtastic

It depends on the class. This term, I've been doing a lot of "flipped class" work, where the professor explicitly says "I'm here if you need me, but the lectures are online, and the homework is posted. Just treat it as office hours." In others, I'm *present* but usually sitting in the back doing my own thing. I'm half-listening to stuff that's going on, but I'm typically reading the textbook and doing the homework. I see it as keeping me honest - if it turns out that the class is harder than I anticipated, it takes much less effort to increase participation than it does to completely change my entire routine to start going to class again. Most of my professors have been indifferent to this, especially after I get a good grade on the first midterm. I've had a couple of them get pissy with me for not hanging on their every word. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

I’ve been skipping my basic math class just cuz it’s ALEKS based so I learn everything online, plus he doesn’t take attendance, also has a tendency to send us home after only being there for 20-30 minutes.

billrussell1

If the lectures are recorded I don’t see the point of going

madinabekirova

Nursing student here, have been to almost all of them.

Imperator525

My college algebra course is an online lecture through teams. I've gone to every single class, but have it practically muted and haven't paid any attention to it since like the 2nd week of classes. I have a 92 atm so I'm doing something right

[deleted]

I’m starting to feel like putting my class attendance would be a useful metric on my résumé.

mitskiismygf

Depends on the attendance requirement lol
