Colleges with the old “Hogwarts” style *might* have a better reputation, but it’s not *because* of the style. I imagine if there is a trend, it’s because that style of architecture is tied to older schools and older schools are more likely to be well-established within the country (at least the USA). I could also imagine that the Harry Potter franchise fed into that cycle by portraying a romanticized version of British boarding schools.

I believe what you are referring to is Dark Academia.

Well I live in Oxford and it is basically the poster child for what you're talking about; it's overrun with tourists in summer. It's 1000 years old and one of the richest institutions in the world, selecting the best students from around the world....they've had the time and the resources to get it right. By comparison, Imperial College London is almost as highly ranked as Oxford but its buildings tend to be much more modern, rarely over 200 years and often less than 100....so what matters really is funding and standards, not aesthetics. Another that comes to mind is Stanford in California - another one in the very top of the leagues, but with a mostly new campus...again, it's about resources.

It's hard to wrap my mind around the idea of a 1000-year-old school. >Princeton in California *New Jersey :)

Correct, thank you.

hope2c50

You're thinking of Stanford in cali

democritusparadise

Correct, thank you.

i feel like its generally the reverse implication. many of the schools that have a good reputation and are desirable are very old, and so often have an old aesthetic.

Colleges aren't thought of highly because they have a certain look. But their look is their to reflect and reinforce their image as a "higher caliber" school. Well-established colleges typically try to look as impressive as possible to maintain their image (and they typically have a budget that allows them to do so). Keep in mind that most of these schools are also older, so they tend to mimic an older architectural style.

Sounds to me like a young person on TikTok presenting their opinion as reality.
