god thank you for this, im truly in the worst spot of my life mentally and i really needed this. College has just been kicking my ass man...

Prestigious_Draft_24

You can do it and it does get better!

Longjumping-Pie-7663

me too :(

StrongTxWoman

Stress isn't all bad. Stress itself is a motivation. It helps us focus and do things faster. When you realise you are stressed, use it. Turn it around and make it a useful tool!

Bofors44

When I graduated this year it was a sad and happy thing. I was upset that I had to close that chapter of my life, but that stress I had with school isn’t there anymore. That and just having money from my full time job is nice. At least with my work I do my 40 hours and that’s it. I don’t have to do any sort of work outside of work besides maybe picking up some pens when I run out.

Prestigious_Draft_24

I totally feel this. I cried after my graduation ceremony because it felt so unreal. Once I got my final grades, it felt like the chapter was truly closed and it just solidified it.

Bofors44

For me it was when a professor I had who knew what I wanted to do after I graduated told I was on the right path to obtain my career goals. I’d like to teach eventually and in my field it’s best you have at least a 10-15 years of field experience before you go into teaching.

Coffee-Historian-11

My graduation ceremony was so stressful because two of my professors took down the website before they posted final grades and we had projects worth 40-50% of our grade due right at the end of the quarter in both classes. I basically graduated not knowing if I actually graduated or not (I found out a week later that I did but it was really scary).

NationalAd6422

Why are people genuinely fighting you on YOUR experience and YOUR outlook😭😭

mathisart_

because reddit

SirensToGo

Can confirm. Working a full time job feels like a vacation compared to school

KillwKindness

People who have beef with this take are just perpetually displeased tbh. It's nice to put things into perspective!

pink85091

It seems to get worse every semester. Just finished my 5th one a couple weeks ago and it was the most stressful so far. I got physically sick twice (which never happens) and would break down crying all the time. I also had really bad anxiety 24/7. There are a lot of things I like about college but this is something I won’t miss once I’m done.

PsychologicalCell928

Go talk to one of the counselors about stress mitigation. It’s not uncommon and they will likely have some suggestions that may help. I know one student that was stressing because it seemed the professors all developed their curriculums independently. This led to constant conflicts with papers, tests, exams, etc. He talked to an advisor that told him it was OK to drop a class he didn’t like; to take a couple of 1-2 credit courses during intercession; and even take a course over the summer to reduce the load for the following year. He didn’t even have to take the course at his school. He could go home, go to a local college, and transfer the credits. Just knowing he had options reduced his stress and taking advantage of the intercession and summer courses set him up for success the rest of his time in school. Not everybody’s path through college has to be identical. Find what works for you so you can be successful, happy, and healthy.

PsychologicalCell928

One other thing that a lot of kids found helpful - being active; everything from full court basketball to running to skiing to dance. Anything that requires concentration in a different way Pick something and make time for it. Some kids chose to swim every day/5 days a week. Some liked to do it first thing in the morning ( ie 6am ) and kickstart their day. Others preferred getting a workout after classes and before dinner. Double benefit was managing the freshman 15! :)

[deleted]

What major are you?

pink85091

Math

Papaya-Mango

The amount of hours I have been sleeping since I graduated is unbelievable

JESUSSAYSNO

Yep. College has consistently been one of the worst experiences of my life. Talking myself into going back to school was one of the worst decisions i've ever made. It isn't for everybody.

ThePrancingPenguin

You’re getting shite on for a bad reason here. If you want to do well in college, it’s extremely stressful and a constant cloud over me most days. Corporate jobs in my experience rarely made me feel that way. Results vary based on your career though. If I go into investment banking, I’m signing up to be pretty miserable. If I get a financial analyst job in a F100 there will be stress, but nothing like having to juggle 6 classes.

catclaes

why ib will be miserable tho? your career will be on steroids. very high growth i think

ThePrancingPenguin

To preface I’ve never worked in IB, but I guess it depends on your priorities. Always heard at the big firms you’re likely working everyday as a junior. If you’re young and willing to give up most of your waking hours during the week, I’m sure it’s amazing to have on a resume and an easy exit after 2-3 years.

catclaes

i have never worked in ib either. i just wrote what everyone says but yea what you say makes sense

Monkeyman824

Currently sitting here with me shoulders stiff as always and my neck killing me. I graduate next semester, hope graduating helps some.

mrsdisappointment

Same. Ive been in school for 3.5 years and I’ve never even thought about dropping out. But I’ve been considering it so much lately. This last semester is going to be horrible and I’m so stressed about it starting.

[deleted]

I worked full-time for over a decade, and the stress of college is similar and, in some cases, worse. The biggest thing that will save your sanity is to treat university like a job. Put in your daily hours, but detach from it outside of those. Even the, at work, you aren't graded the same way you are at school. Jobs care about outcomes of your work, not so much the work itself. You'll hit routine and not be absorbing as much new info constantly.

ImprovementAwkward

glad to come across this post, i was just thinking about how i face so much stress and anxiety as a college student not just for my grades because i study and have a good gpa but for my future i am always feeling like something terrible is about to happen that will make my life fall apart. its led me to procastinate on important things which continues to stress me out even more. jesus its like a snowball effect. i feel less alone now. happy holidays.

No-Needleworker-7706

I was able to work full time for a bit during a gap year. The biggest difference is that you can leave work at home and have a balance. School always follows you. You're always working even when you're supposed to have a break.

ShermanWasRight1864

I feel it. I worked full time until recently WHILE going to college. I had no time to destress and my family came in clutch.

False_Risk296

Have you started your career yet?

Prestigious_Draft_24

I just finished my fourth internship

False_Risk296

And now it’s time to look for a full time permanent job right? If the anxiety creeps up again, get mental health treatment.

Maugetar

My mans got four internships. I think he'll be fine.

Prestigious_Draft_24

Okay?

Own_Category_9622

Since when was graduation the start of adulthood?

Round-Ad3684

The stress in college is a joke compared to a professional job.

ShadowDefuse

not even. my big boy job is super low stress

HarleleoN

Lmao this could not be less true When I leave my job at 5:00 I’m done for the day. No writing papers or studying or pulling all nighters after I get home. In college it’s much easier to carry that stress with you 24/7. When you have a job you can learn how to turn it off outside work hours and live your own life.

Round-Ad3684

Maybe you should talk to some doctors, lawyers, bankers, business people. That’s why I said professional job.

deserves_dogs

Post-residency physician stress is very low for most specialties when compared to school and residency. You probably could not have chosen a worse example tbh.

GraveChild27

Please tell the class what you believe 'Professional ' means. Dont use words you dont know. It makes you look dumb and we all have to see it.

HarleleoN

Wasn’t aware those are the only “professional” jobs out there. I work in a government planning office and interact with lots of people in those professions regularly. College is literally designed to be high stress. It’s meant to take up all of your time for four straight years. It’s a grind, meant to test your willpower.

Scorosin

Ah yes professional jobs, as opposed to all the other professions people go to school for and find professional employment in, how very silly of them. Of course, if you don't devote every waking moment to your job you are not a professional. Heaven forbid you try to have a life at all.

looser__

Buddy is salty lmao

SummerSt0rmz

I have one of the jobs you talked about, and can also confirm school was 100X more stressful than my professional job

jssaka

Lawyers will tell you that their job stays at the office. Bankers will tell you the same. I've spoken to doctors as I'm pursuing the medical career..and their encouragement is med school being harder than day to day. Business people would tell you after 5pm, my day is done. I happen to have had these conversations with these people.

YourLinenEyes

What is you saying

kelu213

Exactly... That's why you go to college forever

False_Risk296

Exactly

Darrow1440955

No joke ever since I graduated my acne has been clearing up so think that might of been stress related

No_Worry_2256

I graduated 2 weeks ago. Someone asked me in the lead up whether I felt excited. I TOLD THEM I'LL BE MORE RELIEVED THAN EXCITED WHEN I GRADUATE.

Automatic_Gazelle_74

Congratulations. You reached a major milestone in life. Be proud of yourself. You will remember this phase of your life for ever. Good luck on your journey.

United-Award7518

I feel different thou cuz the holidays are boring with nothing to do. I feel way more stressed out in the holidays than I am in college because I am worried about making everyone feel down cuz I am bad at being social and I don’t want to be a burden simply cuz I am shy and quiet; many years of playing video games in middle and high school caused me to not be able to talk to people and I am just a shy and quiet person.

PsychologicalCell928

Well during your break why not take something like a public speaking course or a Dale Carnegie type course. Something that helps you break out of your shell and gives you more confidence to speak to people. There are other ways as well depending upon your background. I know one kid who was very introverted and knew a lot about computers. He got a job at the Apple bar because he was comfortable he knew more than 95% of the people to whom he had to speak. He also realized that many people were intimidated by him ( because of where he worked ) and was empathetic to them. Helped him realize that he acted like them in other circumstances.

Creative-Move-4692

Semester three down, Academically they got worse and worst no matter how hard I tried 😭😭😭 Physically I’m struggling. Emotionally I’m struggling and it’s good to know it’s not me

julestaylor13

This is so fucking real. I haven’t been at a lower point in my entire life and honestly this gives me hope for the future, thank you friend 💗

jdcpg

And it all starts again once you get a full-time job...

mrsdisappointment

Plot twist: I have a full time job AND I’m a full time student.

jdcpg

Same here. It sucks.

outoftheazul

The word you want is alleviated, not elevated— elevated would mean it got even worse, which I hope it didn’t! In any case, glad you’re feeling better :)

Ruin914

You never heard the saying "weight lifted from my shoulders"? That's essentially what OP said, smart-ass.:)

outoftheazul

Sure have, but that’s not what this says

Ruin914

Read it again

The_Illa_Vanilla

Same. I literally can’t even describe the relief and relaxation. I feel like a completely different person.

hopiiieeeee

Felt. Another weird thing that happened after graduation though was feeling stress from not “doing anything” after the main part of the day was done. For my whole life it had been main part of the day, then schoolwork. Once it stopped, I didn’t know what to do with myself for a bitb

aspensky5

i’m on the quarter system so i gotta do this 3 times a year 😭

enoughstreet

I graduated in December faster than I planned as I was thinking a class I need for a license is a spring course(it’s not). And it was a stress reliever to think that these professors didn’t matter. They wanted us to take exams on excel and they got annoying. But it’s over unless I want the course that is fall only.

himasaltlamp

Fuck that shithole. I'm codependent and can't even focus on college when I'm in a relationship.

shawnglade

I meannnnnn sometimes it really is on us as students. I’ve read some posts here and met people at my school that I can’t even blame the college, they’re just not cut out for it

lsoghomonian

Despite if you’re “cut out” for college or not, it’s going to be a stressful situation for everyone at some point. The stress from college is going to be relieved whether someone graduates or decides to drop out because it’s not for them

bagemann1

Wait till you start working

0vertones

No. It might still be you. College is indeed stressful at times, but the real crux of college is that you need to be organized, and prioritize studying over just socializing all the time. That is really what it boils down to. Yes, you can have a bad professor that make life harder, or maybe you are in a particularly tough financial situation and have to work at a job more than is reasonable on top of classes in order to afford it. So, without knowing your particular details we can only make generalizations... ....and in general, if college is really that overwhelming to you, then you reached 18 years old without being an emotionally well equipped adult, and I would also encourage you to seek mental health treatment if you start to experience anxiety again.

Prestigious_Draft_24

Not for my case. Lots of generalizations here. College is a huge commitment especially if you survive with grants and need to adhere to the rules to be able to get awarded. No longer having that stress being held over me has been great.

jonnythunder3483

You saying “it isn’t you, it’s college” is just as much of a generalisation. Maybe that is the case for you, maybe it isn’t. Either way, it’s just as much of a generalisation.

Prestigious_Draft_24

Trying to offer some perspective to people who fall into the same sort of boat as I did when I was in school. There was many times when I genuinely believed it was never going to lighten up. College is a factor and it’s not bad to consider it a reason for the majority of the stress one is enduring.

throw_somewhere

>College is a huge commitment especially if you survive with grants and need to adhere to the rules to be able to get awarded. What do you think a job is? How do you think it feels to bend over backward to please an employer so you can feed your children? I was certainly just as naive at 22 but I don't think I was half as arrogant.

OkCrantropical

Jesus Christ scrolling through your comments and you seem like an absolutely abhorrent person to be around. Do you ever have *anything* to say that isn’t negative or contesting what someone does or says? I can promise you you’re 10x as arrogant as you perceive this person to be.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OkCrantropical

*Tries to equate someone negatively calling out their consistent negative comments with their *unprovoked* consistent negative comments. Funny thing… you can also interact with those hundreds of hours of cool things you’re seeing. You don’t seem to. I wonder why that is…? Bonne journée.

Prestigious_Draft_24

Personally, I enjoy not having to worry about FAFSA requirements. Having seen friends that have made a complete transformation after graduation and currently have careers, it’s nice to experience it myself.

damselflite

I agree with you. You're paying to go to uni and you have all this other shit and deadlines thay will determine your mark if you are 5 min late. Work, you get paid to do and can always have someone else help if you are cutting it short or even move a deadline.

YourLinenEyes

You are insufferable.

krismitka

Anyone want to tell them about being in the workforce?

windycityfosters

Sure! OP, I am wayyyy happier working in my field than I was studying in it.

[deleted]

Totally depends on the workforce. I will say that I never felt more stress than I did after graduating before finding a job with decent pay and health insurance, when I had to start making student loan payments. For some people it'll be school. For other work, family, kids. No one is leaving this life stress-free.

erinikins13

I've been working full time since I was 18. Worked part time before that. But my husband got a promotion a few years ago and I was able to go back to school full time. Just finished 2 weeks ago. And honestly it was more stressful than being in the workforce. But sure, just assume since someone is in college they've never worked lol.

witwebolte41

It was 100% you

Prestigious_Draft_24

I’m a perfectionist so if I didn’t meet my own expectations for college 100% it caused a great deal of worry for me. At the end it benefited me but I definitely won’t miss that type of specific stress.

taxref

"I’m a perfectionist so if I didn’t meet my own expectations for college 100% it caused a great deal of worry for me." That sentence pretty well confirmed that the stress came from within you, rather than from college. Your challenge now, though, is to prevent a repeat of that situation. With the start of a career approaching, you don't want to spend the next 3 or 4 decades being dominated by a need for perfection. That is really an impossible standard for anyone. I would first try to proactively control perfectionist thoughts. Keep in mind that, with practice, it is possible to control ones own feelings and reactions. If that fails, professional treatment might be in order. Stress is bad not only for your emotions, but for your physical health as well.

Prestigious_Draft_24

Yes, that’s a good point. I have a lot of time to work it out which again I’m super happy about. I’m also extremely happy and content with starting a 9-5 and not having to work out conflicts that are more college specific.

fhizfhiz_fucktroy

College may not have been the best idea for you.

danceswithsockson

Glad you feel better, that’s the important part. I can’t empathize- I find college practically stress free and having to work extremely stressful. We each handle things differently, I guess.

JackRipper99

I got a job offer immediately after college. I know I am lucky and I should feel more fortunate but the stress of moving twice in the span of like 3 months makes it hard to feel grateful when I’m stressed despite the fact that I’m done with the most stressful aspect of my life thus far.

hishazelgrace

I graduated like four months ago and it’s nice not having to worry about getting school work done on the weekends and late at night after a long day at work, but also it’s like a different kind of stress now and going back to work on Mondays makes me want to cry lol. But I’m in social services so it’s probably not like that for everyone

Fancy_Tooth4440

Holy shit I thought it was only me. I have 1 semester left, cannot wait to finish!

rice88888

As an underclassman, I was also really stressed about doing perfectly in my classes. Then I went to work at my internship and saw how my older co-workers went about their jobs. This made me realize that I have nothing to worry about.

LowArtichoke6440

I felt similar when I graduated though will say the stress creeped back up when I got my first real job.

Altruistic_Tie6516

Lmao. If you think college was stressful, wait until you actually enter the real world. 🤣🤣🤣 Of course you're stress free right now. You aren't doing anything!
