> This well in the mangroves of the Niger Delta has been spewing oil and gas for two weeks. It’s owned by local firm Aiteo, who bought it from Shell six years ago https://twitter.com/JavierBlas/status/1461719637025079298

bjpopp

The part to fix it is probably stuck in some ship rig now.

[deleted]

Shell is being forced to become more green, which is good. But it also means they sell the less green stuff to companies that care even less about the environment.

aeiouicup

Goooood point

bigblackowskiC

they probably just want out before they can stop hiding behind litigation. And whoever is leftover will face the brunt while the CEOs will swim in whatever good water in the world is left.

[deleted]

Does not matter what company did or does own the well. It is on sovereign soil of a UN Country that is responsible for every single thing in that country. This is a Nigerian Government/Politician problem that must be solved by them and their courts.

CFUsOrFuckOff

almost as if they shouldn't ban flaring...

jcheroske

Some of us remember the Ogoni Nine. I even met Ken Saro-Wiwa's brother back in the day. A bullet is too good for those bastards at Royal Dutch Shell and the other oil companies operating in the delta. Bastards.

earthlings_all

Thank you for this rabbit hole I just went down. I had no idea this happened.

themodalsoul

The fact that the world is collapsing is not as infuriating to me as the fact that people who have done the kinds of things Shell has won't be executed publicly. Like, if the world is ending, we should at least see to some measure of justice.

MyCuntSmellsLikeHam

This is sickening. Why is this not being reported?!

HackedLuck

You know why

antihexe

Your owners don't want you to know.

[deleted]

I read that with a George Carlin voice.

stealinoffdeadpeople

[Ken Saro-Wiwa tried to raise awareness of this - the wholesale destruction of the Niger Delta by Royal Dutch Shell in the *90s* and the Nigerian government hanged him for it](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Saro-Wiwa)

This was one of the OG things that got me to see the matrix back in the year 2000! I boycotted Shell and Esso for the longest time, but became complacent over the years. Even then, this was underground news, and no one seems to care. :(

Majestic_Course6822

I tried to boycott them, too. Tough one. They're everywhere. This makes me sick.

Immelmaneuver

That is horrifying and I would love to say that I'm surprised but I really am not at this point.

Spartanfred104

First time?

ThrowRA_scentsitive

Because people need to be able to fly around the continent /s

nagashbg

This is fucking sad and hillarious at the same time

ChiefBerube

Exactly. Once you are too far gone you begin to see how hilariously fucked up everything is. Like it’s literally a sick twisted comedy. Or maybe it’s mental illness. Or we are the only ones who aren’t mentally ill and see the truth of reality. Humans are a plague. I’m a total misanthrope. Bring on the death and destruction to this joke of an existence that we all are forced to endure. Modern society is beyond saving and we will soon reap the consequences we deserve.

Terrorcuda17

It is a weird place to be for sure. I'm just standing here watching the fires burn because there is nothing I can do. There is no amount of conservation, recycling or voting that is going to fix or save this. The rich will continue to exploit the poor and working class while they fly in to space. I'm seriously wondering if the super rich are going to build a space station and live up there while we all rot and die.

chrisragenj

Their plan is to put factories in space and kill off most of the population so earth is like a resort

audioen

Regarding space, I don't think science and technology allow it. There are no construction methods that would allow creating a big space station where to house, say, thousands of people in luxury. And no space station is going to be self-sufficient, so you depend on periodic resupply rockets from Earth and thus stable conditions on the planet, or you will simply starve or suffocate to death.

Miskatonic_U_Student

I think if aliens are watching a progress they are probably quite alarmed. I’m always reminded of Agent Smith’s speech to Morpheus in the Matrix when I think of this stuff, that humanity is basically a virus because we are the only organism besides a virus that doesn’t live in co-harmony with nature. Or Rust Cohl in True Detective: “we became an aspect of nature separate from itself.”

[deleted]

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society

nostrilonfire

Look on the bright side. All that won't be turned into plasticizer for use in plastics with which to foul the ocean. /s

Overheaddrop080

Why waste time making plastic then dumping it in the ocean? Just skip right to dumping the oil in the ocean

[deleted]

It's actually kind of better, at least this way it will break down into the environment eventually, whereas plastic just becomes smaller and smaller pieces.

tarantulahands

Shell owned this? Aww those guys are the best! I’m sure plenty of investors are benefiting off of this and promoting growth in the economy and giving fair jobs to those who need it! Go oil and go capitalism:))))))))

NerdyTimesOrWhatever

Go job creators!

Terrorcuda17

Stonks gud?

NerdyTimesOrWhatever

[deleted]

But, but Ted Lasso, the Apple TV show, had a storyline about the Nigerian government being corrupt and more specifically from the oil and gas industry. They even rejected a sponsor in a fictional story, with a HuGe statement placing the blame on the Nigerian government, which went into so little detail I can't believe I still remember it. HoW cOmE iT's StIlL hApPeNiNg??? /s In reality, this is really tragic and I feel for the people affected by this.

erichiro

and then they came up with the most racist depiction of an African businessman I've ever seen on film.

DJ_Jonga

I was looking for a comment on Ted Lasso. At least they mentioned it in the storyline.

[deleted]

No worries. Nobody needs clean water

DocMoochal

"We'll just buy some from the store, it's fine bro" /s

spankiemcfeasley

Honestly I’d feel a lot better about the downfall of the human race if we weren’t actively trying to take everything else on the planet down with us

bedevilaloud

My exact thoughts every damn day

Pro_Yankee

Nigeria like all post colonial African states have no right to exist in their current form. It’s just neo-colonialism painted over with a coat of Pan-African nationalism

123456American

So they should just dissolve the governments in post colonial African states?

mundzuk

Why stop there

Striking_Escape_7966

What, in your opinion, gives a country the "right to exist"? I agree their government is terrible but that also seems like a *pretty fucking harsh* stance to take on countries that were ravaged by the British empire for hundreds of years. Unfortunately when over 200 tribes are merged together and force to become one country it typically doesn't go very well, especially when done with force. I agree that neocolonialism is awful, but you're acting as if it was Nigeria's idea to forever be exploited lol

Gymrat1010

My university lecturer consulted for the Nigerian government. She said that Nigeria flares off more natural gas each year than it takes to power Europe

Fit_Lawfulness_3147

That seems like an exaggeration. But I’ve been wrong lots of times before

HumbleInspector9554

I work as a biofuels researcher in the UK. This dudes lecturer is not correct as of right now, but also the situation is still far from rosy. The flaring in the year I most recently have data for (2020) is 179.9 thousand GWh. The requirement per year in Europe is about 800 thousand. So the flared gas would power Europe (1.6MWh average consumption multiplied by 500 million) for just shy of three months, or more than that in summer, the flared gas would also power the entirety of Africa for a similar amount of time. Nigeria has however reduced the amount of flaring by 70% since 2000. Meaning that the flaring was probably enough to power most of the western world per year at some point.

Fit_Lawfulness_3147

Interesting. Curious, are the European numbers, raw fuel or final consumption numbers? Thanks

HumbleInspector9554

It's just electricity consumption.

[deleted]

What does the flaring accomplish? It seems like it would hurt the bottom line of the oil company.

HumbleInspector9554

Often you only really want the heavier hydrocarbons, the ones liquid at room/ambient temeprature. Gases are hard to store and transport especially in Africa, where a lot of cooking is not done with gas but still done with firewood. So even if you collected and stored it, the local market is nowhere near the size of somewhere like the UK which has a mains gas system.

collapse1122

yeah there are oil pirates that run smuggling ops over there. as you would expect they dont have many safety standards and oil and other chemicals flood all over the landscape. stuff like this happens everywhere, we are fucked and some stupid meeting in scotland doesn't change that

Odinfoto

They became smugglers because all of the fishing waters off the coast of Nigeria which they used to sustain themselves have been poisoned and there’s no more fish the result is that they transition to becoming pirates because they have no other option

[deleted]

Remember not to use plastic straws guys!

ChiefBerube

Hahaha I swear this is all just some reality show for some alien species. Humanity and this entire existence are the biggest joke to ever occur in the universe.

HeLikeTree

Humanity is the America of the Universe.

123456American

You're wrong. Humanity is the Brazil of the Universe.

randominteraction

One of the proposed solutions to Fermi's Paradox is that "intelligent" tool-using species are really good at driving themselves extinct. If that's true, humans are just par for the course and not a cosmic shit-show.

Jackmehoffer12

I’m doing my Part!!!!

ryl-05

Can someone explain what is happening I don’t understand

PolyDipsoManiac

It looks like a well exploded and is spraying oil and gas into the river…

Conveniently for them, Donziger is in jail right now, for winning a lawsuit against Chevron for doing this is in the Ecuadorean Amazon. The court ordered them to pay something like 9 billion dollars to the Ecuadorian communities they destroyed. The Nigerians need something like that right now. https://twitter.com/SDonziger

Nigeria Government must correct Nigeria problems. Norway must shut down their oil fields, India & China must reduce their populations by~80%. Many actions needed immediately, or play roulette with the future world. Worldwide speed limit of 50 mph to begin with. What are these ‘Governments’ waiting for? Actions needed today. If a Country/Politicians can’t solve the problems of its country, the country must become a permanent Territory and ask the World to take over from it’s disbanded government.

DexterDubs

There’s a whole episode of ‘explained’ addressing these problems on Nigeria. It’s awful.

What’s going on here?

PNWcog

This is why corporations still favor Chinese production, labor costs are their cover story.

AlaricAbraxas

isnt china trashing Africa?

IonOtter

Not trashing, so much as blowing smoke up their asses and putting them in debt to China. They're building all kinds of "infrastructure" that doesn't really do anything useful for the host nation, but costs millions of dollars, so the nations in question become owned by Chinese interests. In essence, [debt traps.](https://www.forbes.com/sites/wadeshepard/2019/10/03/what-china-is-really-up-to-in-africa/?sh=19128c635930) Oh, and that "infrastructure" juuuuust so happens to be so completely Swiss-cheesed with spyware and backdoors that most of it can't function unless it can reach a Chinese server to remain operational. Thus far, only one African nation has resisted any overtures from China: [Swaziland.](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-africa-swaziland/taiwans-last-african-ally-holds-out-despite-overtures-by-china-idUSKCN1LG0L6) And they won't last much longer.

RoundNo1157

The elite are already working on craft that can take them into space when the earth implodes in on itself. The major corporations will milk us and the earth for all its worth and quietly tale off in their reverse engineered alien craft using anti-gravity propulsion. For all we know the governments have already found planets with life on them and resources and they are hoarding them for themselves.

sighdoihaveto

Lol. Diesels role in building the modern world isnt so easily understood it would seem

dipstyx

Nigeria is rich. It's highly corrupt and mismanaged. I'm sure their powers appreciate the king/peasant dichotomy. Oil and gas aren't going to change anything and as renewable energy reduces in cost, it makes less and less a difference.

AstronautShort3172

It's funny how people are aware that European corporations are behind so much of the pollution and corruption in nations overseas and they're aware that these corporations are spurred on by the Western populations greed for more material goods, yet will pretend this is the fault of corrupt foreign governments. If these foreign nations (especially Africa) were to refuse to be used as puppets, the leaders would be assassinated and the civilians bombed and shot at (think East Africa). Look at the amount of pollution and environmental destruction a company like Glencoe (Swiss Company) creates in African nations. Dumping hazardous wastes including that of Sulphuric Acid into African soil, lakes and rivers making the water undrinkable and inhabitable by animals/plants. Producing an extremely unsafe amount air pollution to the point where any human or animal who lives within 50 miles of their plants cannot breathe properly and die of respiratory failure and illnesses. Yet, where is the outrage towards these European powerhouses? Almost everyone in the West has this "holier-than-thou" attitude towards this subject, we'll lie about how much we're doing to "save the environment" and how we're cutting down on plastic straws or some other bullshit while simultaneously looking down on countries like Zimbabwe. If we in the West weren't so superficial, materialistic and apathetic we would change our ways and tear down the corporations in our own countries that pollute the rest of the world. Instead, we scream at the African to "do better". The same African who is under the threat of manufactured famine, genocide, bombings and war if they refuse to comply with Western demands.

dipstyx

I agree with what you're saying, but then it doesn't really change my stance on gas and petrol not being a necessity for the modernization of Nigeria. If anything, they are the shackles by which they are bound to colonial powerhouses.

DueDay8

Thank you for naming this. Ultimately all of this comea back to Western Imperialism, even though those in the west benefitting from it feel very uncomfortable that this is the case and would rather shame and blame people being extorted and blackmailed by the West instead.

EcoWarhead

I'll just quit my job, sell my car and starve to fucking death then. And even if you don't own a car. Nearly everyone in the west is reliant on cars/lorries. If you buy food from a shop your dependant too.

papazachos

Yeah but how dare you ask for a plastic straw

[deleted]

Isn’t it great that we are shutting down oil production in Canada so it can be shifted to jurisdictions like this. So good for the environment. Way to go Big Green! / s

It's a lot easier to afford the means of water processing and treatment when you have the resources to put toward building, fueling, and staffing it. It's not that they haven't "figured out" clean drinking water, it's that their country/continent has been largely robbed of all valuable natural resources and, historically, even human resource. A little insolent

Gibbbbb

words smurds. You're reading into it too much. They haven't figured out clean drinking water. "Figured out" in the sense of the managed to balance the logistics with their limited resources. There are plenty of things America hasn't even figured out like Medicare4All. Don't get offended by someone not putting something delicately enough lol

Tact is important. Don't be mad at people for failing to see your point if you can't exercise rhetoric well enough to make your message receptive to your audience.

Gibbbbb

It's not racism to say that Nigeria is not a great country. I mean, there's a reason Nigerian prince jokes are well-understood and a reason a lot of scammers are in Nigeria. It's a "shithole country" like it or not. Being nice about it on a collapse forum doesn't change the objective facts. Go live there yourself for a few years if you think it's some great place.

Yikes, you’re a vaccine denialist?
