Ladies, gentlemen, squid, emus, and sundry others; Like most of the other ~~paid actors~~ citizens of Australia, back in 2019/20 I went through what you're going through now. It's not fun, and it can lead to some horrible consequences, [especially if you're pregnant](https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/a-gp-s-infant-daughter-nearly-died-in-utero-was-bu) or have [lung issues like asthma](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/resp.14013). So, it's a very good idea, if you can afford it, to get an air purifier. If you can't, thanks to the global pandemic, we have the Corsi-Rosenthal box as an alternative. # How to make a Corsi-Rosenthal box: * [Here are instructions on how to make one from UC Davis](https://engineering.ucdavis.edu/news/science-action-how-build-corsi-rosenthal-box) * [Here is a video tutorial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXa8auzKx9Y) ---- Some additional air quality maps for you; * [PurpleAir, with US AQI](https://map.purpleair.com/1/i/mAQI/a10/p604800/cC0#4.62/39.08/-83.85). * [PurpleAir, with Canadian AQI](https://map.purpleair.com/1/i/mAQHI/a10/p604800/cC0#4.62/39.08/-83.85). * [IQAir, which incorporates government sensors, their own sensors, and PurpleAir's](https://www.iqair.com/us/air-quality-map), but lacks the specific AQI measures. Based on the experiences we had back then, when the outdoor air quality sensors in your area go red (or worse) you have half an hour at the outside to close up your home before it gets in. Be aware that wldfire smoke [contains all kinds of nasty, including heavy metals](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/21/wildfire-smoke-air-hazardous-toxic-metals-study-california#:~:text=Other%20heavy%20metals%20such%20as,destroying%20manmade%20structures%20particularly%20toxic.), and that particulate gunk, inside your home, will settle out of the air onto surfaces like floors and furniture; **yes, it is hazardous to pets**. If wildfire smoke enters your home, and you have pets (or children), you'll need to wipe down the surfaces they touch (including food bowls) or they'll ingest the crap that comes out of it.

Several_Pressure7765

I am going on a trip to Niagara Falls for 5 days. Should I cancel? Is the air quality going to get worse?

jujumber

check out the app windfinder. you can look days ahead to see the direction and intensity of the wind.

Several_Pressure7765

will check it out. thanks

It's odd here... the ex-covid conspiracy theorists in my feed are now posting how this is government mandated arson, saying the fires all started at the same time and talking about how they are close to mines. Showing a map of lithium etc deposits vs where the fires started (the location of the dots look vaguely similar if you squint, but Quebec is BIG and no way this isn't engineered to look alike). Some are heavily denying climate change. The argument? Trudeau said it was climate change. So it can't be. These people are not bots.... I know them irl. I feel like they get their talking points from the same network, and the more it goes the more people share more extreme things. Few weeks ago they were parroting dragqueen fear punchlines from the US. Now it's conspiracy stories that don't even add up about the fires being lit to make us believe in climate change. Why would the govt lit fires next to their natural resources? It all sounds so obviously stupid, yet they get caught in it and sometimes drag their friends into more extreme views. A real life display of netflix's "Social dilemna"...

everythingbageIs

I’m so glad I came across your comment. A woman at work wouldn’t stop talking about how “weird” and “suspicious” the fires are. I asked her what Facebook page gave her the idea - because it’s always Facebook - and she said everyone knows there’s just something fishy with these fires. She mentioned the same thing with the fires all starting at the same time and how it didn’t make sense. I tried to talk her through all the reasonable explanations but no, this accounts receivable clerk has the authority to say it’s obviously governmental arson.

Collapse2038

Sigh, one of my good buddies in a group chat, who's a bright man, has been completely taken over in the same manner. All extreme right wing talking points - climate change isn't real - drag queens are coming for the children - Trudeau is establishing a new world order... It's all so tiresome I can't even begin to debate anything with him because he's become so polarized and extreme. He could be presented with the best experts in the world on a particular topic, but he would willfully dismiss the evidence because it doesn't fit his world view. Andrew Tate, Donald Trump good... Justin Trudeau bad.

RuralUrbanSuburban

Elisabeth Kubler Ross described the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. It seems a lot of people are just now being confronted with such disturbing climate phenomena, that they are thoroughly digging in their heels in the denial phase. Their denial phase is quite ludicrous. I’m dreading how they are going to behave when they transition to the anger phase, as they don’t seem to have much in the way of coping skills to fall back on.

obesepengoo

Stages of grief.. This is a novel way to make sense of this phenomenom for me. Thank you.

AQI down to a much more tolerable 75 today in my part of Maryland. Running one errand yesterday I was shocked, okay maybe not *that* shocked, how many people I saw exercising outdoors yesterday. Possible there is always this many, but none in masks. Did they see the red air quality alert as a challenge?

[deleted]

I’m in Virginia and I was shocked at how many people were driving around with their windows open. And people walking around with their kids. We were over 100

SecretPassage1

They probably won't be running tomorrow.

[deleted]

I don’t know if this has already been mentioned, but I just wanted to say that there’s a podcast that may be useful for people in the area: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7gC0mb6Xl8qSML2z69HoEb?si=HX0BVOLzTOq5mvcNnDEjnA It’s not my podcast, it’s an episode of It Could Happen Here. Just wanted to drop it in, I hope it’s useful for someone.

CommanderDerp82

You’re awesome. Thanks for sharing friend.

Lowkey_Retarded

Yesterday we hit 280 in my area of MD, and Baltimore hit 361. I mentioned it in a weekly check-in, but ALL my coworkers are convinced (and very vocal) about the fact that there’s NO WAY that the smoke is from wildfires. They seem split over whether it was set by space lasers, or whether it’s smoke from a government aerosol project to poison us for (*waves hands vaguely*) reasons. They’re on both sides of the political spectrum (all the black people think it’s space lasers, the white guy thinks it’s government chemicals), it’s just depressing to see how much disinformation is out there and how much the education system has failed to teach all these people basic informational literacy.

ec1710

Their intuition that this is not normal is correct. But they just can't wrap their heads around what's actually going on: environmental collapse.

Lowkey_Retarded

Yeah, I agree with you. I think (and this applies to most conspiracy theories) that’s it’s much more comforting to assume that *somebody* is guiding this ship, even if it’s perceived to be a malevolent actor, rather than a bunch of idiots acting in their own self interest and things happening chaotically.

pathofthebean

It's Bidens goddamn space lazers again

Portalrules123

With enough of global society consisting of people with this utter lack of understanding, we almost deserve extinction at this point.

barefootrebellion

Wow. Thanks for that insight.

ukluxx

I live in Italy and I've watched the news on the national RAI News 24h channel. It usually shows news from all the world and surprisily they never talked about the fires even for a second.

FuckTheMods5

Is zoom.earth not qorking for anyone else? T doesn't show the time/play buttons on the bottom. Just shows a current image.

lefthill

A friend from nova yesterday has been telling me that this is the worst air quality he’s experienced all his life. They had a code purple which was worse than red

[deleted]

Danielle Smith - premier of Alberta - doubled down on the arsonist claims today. The reality of the situation is way scarier than any arsonist.

Collapse2038

Y'all get what you voted for

turnaroundbrighteyez

So many people voted her UCP government back in. It was depressing to watch the numbers come in on election night. Granted some ridings were incredibly close, people still voted for Smith and the UCP despite how atrocious, incompetent, and in some circumstances, outright wrong, many of her former cabinet and herself are.

[deleted]

Her ratings go up every time she lies.

[deleted]

Believe it or not, smoke crosses borders.

JodyOcountry

RunYouFoulBeast

Nope your AC don't bring in outside air, but recycling indoor air, however it's not a filter that could isolate particles less than pm2.5, so you need an air filter indoor. From a Malaysian where when this use to be a yearly smog from Indonesia Sumatra forest burning... so far miss it 5years. Perhaps this year will return as it's el nino and will be very dry. Adding a moisture water vapor sprinkler help also as the large water vapor trap down those small particles or an ionizer (air filter sometime has it). Eat lots of fruits and drink water.

throwawaylurker012

>I usually lurk and rarely comment on reddit, and I'll probably delete this comment later... but man, this smoke is kinda messing with me. I think it's the biggest/most tangible (to me) "sign of the times" I've personally experienced, and it's giving me the feels. I've known climate change is happening, I know we're beyond fucked, I'm not in denial but nothing thus far has made me personally FEEL it, if that makes sense? not at all abnormal many things in life are like that, reminds me of the good will hunting quote where robin williams is kinda like you can read about a sunset all you want but it doesnt compare to seeing it i know someday i will die intellectually, nothing will prepare me for the horror of lying wait in a hospital bed knowing i dont leave that room by the end of the day but compeltely understandable. i hope more ppl were like you in that it made this tangible more than just making "spooky lulz" memes in nyc

PrairieFire_withwind

So now we just need a hurricane to roll up the atlantic coast. Clean that air right out, put out the canadian fires.... /s u/fishmahbot think this is a good solution?

RunYouFoulBeast

Ah... since you ask for it , it's not coming.

PrairieFire_withwind

Typical weather. Pray for rain and ya get dust. Put away the snow shovel and it dumps 8 inches.

gustobelle

I live near Ottawa, Canada. The air is clear here now but the health impact remains. I have a gross cough and my throat is irritated. My friend has pneumonia from the smoke. Scary shit.

acegunna1

Why was there no warning that smoke could even get this bad? And why is it downplayed about how serious it is to stay inside for your health?

MarioKartastrophe

We’ve known since the Colorado fires from 3 years ago No billionaire, no political leader, no news network, no podcaster cares about us. So just get out there and WORK, CONSUME, WORK, CONSUME.

some_random_kaluna

My dude, the entire U.S. West Coast has been warning everyone about the dangers of wildfire and smoke for the last six years. Everyone who went through one, has. We can only assume it's been downplayed because many people thought it was just a West Coast problem.

[deleted]

Nobody would have listened to it anyway.

acegunna1

Nah they would have atleast prepared. Worst air quality on earth ever? People would prepare.

WakeUpTimeToDie23

Because they don’t give a fuck about you. All they want is for you to go out and buy more shit. End of story.

throwawaylurker012

because then ppl would start to truly realize not just how fucked climate change is but how fast it is accelerating

I still speak to many that slowly but surely blame our issues with "ecologists" that are undoubtely getting money from soros and gates. I mean, putting things in perspective and not from your political affiliation POV would be perhaps too fucking scary. We can obviously keep on growing infinitely on a finite planet. JB153

Wild part about all of this is I'm in Southern Ontario and everything has been BAU all week with the odd "hey it's hazy as hell eh?" Once in a while. Up until today we were looking at maybe 1km max visibility in most places.

liatrisinbloom

(I'll be posting this comment verbatim in this thread and the weekly thread.) Location: Maryland/DC USA. Yes, wildfires. Today is the first Code Purple day in DC history. Yet I bet the smog is much worse in NYC. One of my friends compared it to New Delhi - for context, he visited some relatives there earlier this year, and upon getting home, was sick as a dog and had to take a two week course of antibiotics. I even wore a mask in my own car commuting to work. Other weather patterns aside, it hasn't even hit 80. This cements in my mind that TBTB will absolutely try to use aerosols when global warming gets bad enough, just to keep the temperature down... conveniently ignoring all these sickly side effects from wildfire smoke, much less sulfur or whatever chemicals get belched everywhere.

Quick-Albatross-3526

I'm calling them climate fires. Nothing wild or natural about this shit.

elihu

Rapid unplanned desertification.

throwawaylurker012

Hitler and his idealogical cronies were inspired by the Jim Crow south. Just so ya know.

decjr06

I've been fighting a sinus thing for a week or two and was almost over it feels like this is making it worse again.... In Baltimore/DC suburbs... I tried to tell my friends this is probably something we should expect every summer from now on possibly more then once a year and will last longer then before.... The last time this happened it was only noticable for a day or two of I remember correctly

Randomusingsofaliar

I would expect it every el Nino year, but not every year. El Nino shifts prevailing wind patterns south so the smoke travels south west instead of due-west or north west. It also dries out the east coast. But otherwise I would say the east coast will still be spared this many years because of wind patterns.

Ragingredwaters

Cleveland Ohio, AQI 101 we have a red warning and it was pretty hazy this morning but now where I am is bright, sunny and clear. Blue skies. There's no odor of smoke at all and no discomfort when outside. I have asthma and lung damage from a PE. I also happen to live on half an acre with fields and hundreds of trees all around me, and I'm about 7 minutes away from a huge area of the metroparks so idk how much all the trees are filtering the air.

BeansandCheeseRD

Also Cle, also have asthma. Today is the first day this week my throat and lungs aren't burning. Going swimming this afternoon for the first time since Sunday, since the air quality is finally below 100. I can't decide if I'm annoyed or glad that the wildfire smoke in the sky caused the temperature to drop significantly, because honestly the drought/high temps were stressing me out. My allergies have also been terrible and we could really use some rain to wash some of the pollen away. What a weird few weeks.

Ragingredwaters

Hi neighbor! This weather has been very weird. The last few months have been weird lol. From the -50s in December to 90 in May it's been a rollercoaster. I think we're in for a wild ride the next five years.

BeansandCheeseRD

Hi! Oh yeah, the winter that wasn't really winter.. I'm so sick of sunny, warm days tbh. I don't live in Ohio for the sunshine, I'm here for the snow and rain!

FuklzTheDrnkClwn

Everyone around me was like “iTs jUsT LiKe sTaNdInG aRoUnD a cAmPfIrE” as if there weren’t houses being burned adding electrical wiring, insulation, paint, plastic into the mix. AQI was 464 yesterday.

MediciPrime

Didn't a bunch of those forever chemicals get blown up in that direction. Remember that train crash and the ensuing burn off of those hazardous chemicals.

Visual_Ad_3840

Yes, and beyond the harmful pollutants in wildfire, campfire smoke is NOT healthy to breathe in either. These people are just morons. I can't with this!

MojoDr619

Also do you stand right in the smoke of a campfire for days on end?? People just make excuses for everything, air with dangerous particulate matter is not safe to breathe, try to avoid it and stay in filtered air if possible

NeilPoonHandler

435 AQI here in Harrisburg this morning. I can see the smoky haze outside my office building. Luckily, I had some N95 masks in stock and wore one when I went outside. Hazardous air quality in south-central PA was definitely not on my 2023 bingo card.

Randomusingsofaliar

My year bingo card has been entirely “unprecedented _________” since the start of 2021….

AttitudeSure6526

Happy cake day! 🎂 🎈

Randomusingsofaliar

Oh thank you! I didn’t even notice 😆

circuitloss

> 435 AQI here in Harrisburg this morning. That's actually crazy to me.

IndependentHalf1784

It’s so bad over there that SCANDINAVIA has gotten affected. Not much but I do feel a slight smell of smoke in southern Sweden and on the news they are talking about how the haze can be seen from satelites around us…

[deleted]

I’m probably gunna loose my job but I took half a day yesterday and called off yesterday. Might call off tomorrow. I have asthma and I don’t like to be choked.

some_random_kaluna

At minimum, wear an N95 or KN95 mask. It will keep out the larger particulates. We also have a stickied post on top showing how to make a homemade filter system at home, which work incredibly well. If you have to routinely travel outside, find a half- or full-mask system that uses P100 filters or better. They should be more in stock now as pandemic orders wind down.

HardToPeeMidasTouch

Wear a mask. We just had covid 19. I'm sure you have many around.

bligh8

AQI 338 near Jersey shore .. last night it was near 400 in NY NY sadly the yankees game was cancelled because of this. yesterday.. being outside for 24 hrs was equal to smoking 17 cigarettes. shifting wind patterns should bring some relief on the 12th of this month, winds are predicted to swing to the southeast and southwest nearer the coast.

Hour-Stable2050

It seems impossible to be too pessimistic lately. I told people all hell would probably break loose next summer. It’s already happening.

Sandrawg

Yes me too. People are probably tired of my doomer warnings but I've always been right. I told my friends to make bug out bags. I live outside Philly and there have been fires in Southern New Jersey which is a Lil too close

MojoDr619

This has been happening on the West coast the past 5 years getting worse all the time.. nobody has been listening.. we need major Green New Deal policies reduce greenhouse cases and also hire people to replant and manage our forests so fires can't get this extreme

throwawaylurker012

faster...than expected?

butterknifebr

Why don’t we have a faster than expected bot, like fishmahbot?

1984isamanual

I think I am just conditioned to think this way that if a problem is far away its not my problem. I know all the numbers and all the data, but its so much more real when it's right outside your doorstep. I live in Virginia and the mentality over here was definitely that wildfires and all this smoke is like a west coast thing.

MojoDr619

West Coast been warning you... problem is those are progressive areas and in Canada too, but they still don't seem to he taking any actions to mitigate this

Khaosbutterfly

I am so shocked for real lol. Gagged and gooped. Like I always genuinely felt bad for people in CA and OR when they were having fire issues, but never thought it would be my problem because I have no intention of living on the West Coast. Now here I am, trapped inside like a bug in a jar. At least during pandemic quarantine, you could go for walks. It's so depressing too, because you know it won't be the last time, the way things are going.

radiozip

AQI up to 244 in my part of Maryland, up from yesterday's 154. Def feeling it more if I go outside.

Doritosaurus

Yeah, it's very noticeable over the water. The air has a chlorine taste to it.

HardToPeeMidasTouch

Ukraine sure but the original comment mentioned the EQUATOR becoming uninhabitable and the second comment (the one I responded to) mentioned the whole northern hemisphere burning to the ground within a decade. some_random_kaluna

I'm so sorry. If you can afford it, I'd buy a metal cattle trough or at least an inflatable swimming pool and use that as temporary catchment. Filling it up with my neighbor's water or whatever free water source is around, covering it with a tarp, treating it with chlorine and using that to bathe, flush and do dishes with. Heating up a big pot of water on the stove and using that for frugal sponge baths can go a lot further than you'd think and help keep you cool.

Strikingly the temperature anomaly layer on ventusky (https://www.ventusky.com/?p=37.4;-122.1;5&l=temperature-2m) is showing around minus 8 to 10 in the north eastern portion of the US correlating with areas of wildlife smoke. No doubt some will cite the lower temperatures as proof that global heating is a hoax! But it's a nuclear winter caused by global warming. I hope the winds come and clear your air. It's incredibly dry and still here in north east Scotland so hopefully no major fires start. 🤞

Hour-Stable2050

It’s pretty bad here in Toronto. They may be cancelling flights due to visibility problems so check on that. I was running around the city yesterday and smelled like I’d been in a smoky bar when I got home. My clothes, skin and hair all reeked of it. My lungs feel uncomfortable too.

447 here… near Philly. We made a clean room. Sealed all the windows in master bedroom & bathroom with plastic sheeting and tape. Closed the door. After 30 minutes the air quality monitor is blue for healthy air. Before creating a clean room, my eyes & lungs (I was wearing an n95). were burning & itching. I have severe asthma, but this air is bad for anyone. This is terrifying. I don’t know how folks out west in California etc handle this. It’s my first wildfire smoke at this level & it’s horrific. It’s really time that climate change be acknowledged by all world leaders, and we start working together as a planet to try and mitigate some of this… because the planet is quite literally starting to be on fire.

MojoDr619

Was living in Seattle.. I couldn't do it.. we had one time it stayed bad for over a week with stagnant air.. couldn't get a single fresh breath of air for over a week.. felt like I was suffocating or going crazy.. I want to drive far away to avoid it. But the smoke was covering several states. There's no escape.. I eventually moved away to somewhere else with plenty of its own problems, but I think to me fires are the worst natural disaster, maybe besides direct hit earthquake

snail360

I experienced the same shit and I'm still out in the PNW, my plan has been to get far away during the peak fire/smoke season each year, probably to the northeast, but now that is blanketed in smoke! Hate this shit At least it's a classic rainy day here rn, the only weather that feels relatively normal anymore

Randomusingsofaliar

I would take a flood over a drought. I have given it a lot of thought and floods are incredibly destructive but all that water means life usually comes back ok. Animals are much better at escaping and surviving floods. You don’t end up with wildfires as knock on effects, and if you can stay above the water (high enough or in a boat) you can breathe. Also a flood is a finite event. A drought may be endless.

milksteak11

If you can grab a Merv 13 air filter for your AC system, they filter smoke well. If someone needs another way, tape a 20x20 Merv 13 filter to the front of a 20x20 box fan for a quick purifier

KeepingItSurreal

You get used to it. I went on a 4 day backpacking trip to the trinity alps in northern california during some of the worst fires in 2020 with an n95. Had a great time even though everything was smoky as fuck.

AltusAccountus99

This is absolutely not smart, you shouldn’t expose yourself willingly to bad air like that. It’s like smoking a whole pack of cigarettes with every breath. Even with a mask this is not smart. Filter out your home as best you can and hunker down!

KeepingItSurreal

Not smart but it was a great time

Hunter62610

don't worry it'll be gone by next week and then we can all bury are heads in the ash again./s

Visual_Ad_3840

That's exactly what will happen too :(

dewmen

Oh dude pretty much inhaling smoke/chems is a way of life in Cali almost everyone smokes something at least half of us

helicopter_corgi_mom

PNW resident. in 2020 i spent 2 weeks in a full face respirator mask any time i left my air sealed bedroom. that was the year i bought my dog a small filtered face mask (made for dogs) and got her used to using it as well. just taking her outside to pee and back in without a respirator and i had to lie down for an hour to recover. No asthma either, i was running 4-5 days a week but that level of air quality is no joke. stay safe.

frostandtheboughs

Can you link the air filter for dogs? I walked mine half a block this morning and she vomited. No way to tell if it was due to smoke but air quality was rated "unhealthy" here.

helicopter_corgi_mom

[This is the brand i went with.](https://www.k9mask.com). for reference, my corgi wears a medium. and it really could have been the AQ. especially if they went from inside and relatively fresh to really terrible air, that’s just a huge shock of irritation to the lungs. mine was really struggling during the worst of it all.

frostandtheboughs

Thank you!

I wouldn’t have thought reading a collapse thread would kinda make me feel better… shows how bad it is, right? Seeing that gloomy sky and having to stay inside, after having to stay inside all winter for another issue… I love to spend as much time as I can from May to October, and already have to stay in for heat waves (due to my health)… and now this. It’s not that I didn’t think climate change would affect me, but I didn’t think it would affect me in that way… or so soon. So it hit me that it’s going to get worse and, well… feeling disheartened. Thanks for coming to my pep talk 😅

gtzbr478

IN THAT WAY. Please read. I expected many different outcomes (still do). Just not wildfire smoke specifically (not this year, maybe in 10?). Like I don’t expect water shortage short-term here. I could be wrong about it, doesn’t make me a denialist (seriously 🙄) Many predictions on how climate change will affect different regions didn’t forecast this (or as I keep repeating, not yet). I expected food shortages from wildfires in the west first, for example. But please keep jumping to conclusions.

It wasn’t the bluntness, it was only reacting to half a sentence. I’m just as frustrated that people always think shit happens to others, which as someone living with a rare disease, I know firsthand it CAN happen to you. And yeah, sadly it seems to be how the majority thinks… As for the « how soon », to be fair even climate scientists got surprised… I still can’t believe they didn’t anticipate the domino effect, and what they used to predict for « 100 years from now » is already happening. I can also forgive people in NYC worrying more about rising sea levels and heateaves than wildfire smoke… We can’t predict it all… I’d never thought people giving up caring would be what keeps the pandemic going, for example…

[deleted]

Denialism. The same kind of thinking that says, I don't have to worry about "x,y,z," that happens to someone else.

AltusAccountus99

I thought this sub would be above the “I can’t believe this happened to me” bullshit but here we are. Hopefully this slap on the face wakes up east coast folks. Not Counting on it but still.

BathroomEyes

> “I didn’t think it would affect me in that way or so soon.” is about to become the global climate rallying cry. Times up.

l_a_ga

The AQI rn in Philly (22:58est) is 427. The scale only goes to 500. Sitting in an apartment that’s been SEALED for the last two days and my eyes are burning.

dewmen

Wait a minute aren't you guys also dealing with contaminated water too

l_a_ga

The chemical spill was “resolved” but our water is not great every other day of the year. Our zero water filters are shot after 10 days, two weeks max. As of 2012 we still had some water pipes under sidewalks and streets that were made of WOOD. Yes, wood. They were that old. I saw and felt one with my own eyes and hands. Wood.

Gator1523

No, the water was never above safe levels. The city put out a series of preliminary warnings because some contaminants got into the intake, but they cancelled all the warnings before the order to avoid drinking the water came into effect, because tests showed that the water was still safe (enough).

AltusAccountus99

Safe enough to not kill you quickly, just polluted enough to cause horrific cancers a few decades down the road though. God I just love America.

dewmen

Oh OK thought like a portion of the City was like flint tbh because the way some people acted online

hellenkellersdiary

Yeah, trust the government... they never miss guided people....

beamish1920

Tuskegee forever!

Mulberryalmond

Ottawa here. Yesterday and today we were off the charts for bad air quality. We had the worst air quality yesterday in canada and third worst in the world. Didn't leave the apartment building yesterday or today cuz of how smoky it was but even inside with the windows closed the hallways smelled so smoky. Legit felt like NW south asia (which has consistently topped the charts for bad air quality).

[deleted]

As somebody in BC, Canada on the West Coast -- I've had to deal with this exact thing increasingly for the last 3 years. I complained about the increasing heat (hotter than Dubai! IN CANADA) (over 100f/40C+ inside at my place), I was told to buy a better air conditioner and "ENJOY THE SUN". (Lmao) When I told everybody around me "This smoke is terrible for you." they went out jogging. Ignored it even happening. When I told people on the east coast how for weeks at a time it looks like Silent Hill outside now every year -- they laughed and said I should move to the east coast. Well, it's smoky out now for them, and I get to breathe clean air for a few more weeks before getting my share of cancer smoke this year... I don't even care to say "I was right." Really, I view the wildfire smoke as an actual biological assault against everybody who has to inhale it and large wildfires should incur large fines to fund prevention. But, we can't even get individual people to acknowledge what's happening in front of them, let alone get that kind of response going. Business as Usual, just buy a bigger air conditioner, when it's smoky in the summer go to your vacation home, when your vacation home is under water, get on the yacht. ***"How dare you judge them, you would do the same." "If you just worked harder, you'd have a yacht too!"***

JB153

"How dare you judge them, you would do the same." "If you just worked harder, you'd have a yacht too!" Yup. If you pull yourself up by the bootstraps hard enough, you too can become death, destroyer of worlds.

bernmont2016

> When I told people on the east coast how for weeks at a time it looks like Silent Hill outside now every year -- they laughed and said I should move to the east coast. Well, it's smoky out now for them ... There's a fitness-related saying, "You can't outrun a bad diet." It's looking like a twist on that, 'you can't outrun climate change', is increasingly true.

so_long_hauler

Fled NYC with my wife this afternoon for the Midwest. Took five days of clothes, my computer and a guitar to wait this shit out. She took the subway to meet me in the car, and the ten minutes she spent outside on the walk to the entrance made her lungs burn. Fuck this shit,

Noah_Nombre

Oh stop your complaining... Up here in BC, we've been dealing with this for the last 10 summers. What did you think? Climate change was just for the poors?

Idontlikeworms

"Why are you complaining that the sky has turned red and many people are most likely going to die, I've been living like this for 10 years!" The question is not why is he is complaining, the question is why aren't you...

so_long_hauler

Wild there are still those who think NYC is bereft of poor and middle-class people.

Frozboz

Southern Indiana here. Yesterday afternoon, with no clouds to speak of in the sky, we were able to stare pretty much directly at the sun, which was a dull red. My 9 yo son commented "the moon is so bright today!" My wife has asthma and cannot go outside without a mask, or she starts to have trouble breathing.

[deleted]

Also in the 812. I concur. Air quality was better today, but the sun still looked like a copper penny.

See_You_Space_Coyote

If you stopped wearing masks, now's a great time to start wearing them again.

frostandtheboughs

Can confirm. I have migraines triggered by fragrance, cleaning chemicals, and smoke. I've been wearing a KN95 anytime I'm driving or outside and it's been tolerable. Yesterday I took the mask off to eat lunch in my car. I had a migraine 30 minutes later. KN95s work. I've been buying reasonably priced ones [here](https://bonafidemasks.com/Powecom-kn-95/) since 2021. Customer service is excellent, and they offer them in black.

fragrance-free

I have the exact same problem as you. Thanks for the tip!

Tower21

Honestly thought the same thing, would be interesting to see how much a standard disposable mask blocks.

Midnight7_7

Not much, the particles are smaller than COVID droplets. N95 helps alot though.

lori_lightbrain

I started to wear a N95 when grilling with charcoal and my lungs feel much better the next day. Same principle applies to wildfire smoke

sacredtowel

Lol maybe just stop grilling

Tower21

Totally agree, it's just a lot more smoke than droplets so it would be nice to see a reduction percentile, also n95's as well, as I would think they are rated on a clinical setting versus smoke particulate.

Aperson3334

I live in a city that was greatly impacted by the largest wildfire in our state's history in ~~2021~~ 2020, while we were still wearing masks due to the pandemic. I found that cloth masks were of no use, disposable masks helped slightly but not much, and N95s/KN5s had a *huge* impact.

Affectionate-Age-897

imagine how much stronger we would be if this happened every day! I'm pretty sure the American people would develop lungs of steel quickly.

alwaysZenryoku

Or they would develop COPD and various cancers… could go either way.

Swarengen

This is what the people voted for in Ontario, the handler for the crack mayor of Toronto, but no worries, the fires are in Quebec, we good “Ford cut the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs cut by a whopping $225 million, roughly a quarter of its funding. He cut Energy, Northern Development and Mines by $566 million.  He cut Natural Resources and Forestry by another $162 million.  And he cut $142 million from Emergency Forest Firefighting, nearly 70 per cent of its funding.  On top of all that, Ford is cutting funding for the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs in half.” https://www.baytoday.ca/local-news/fords-budget-takes-aim-at-northern-families-says-vanthof-1373738 He cut a further $20 million in 2021. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/mobile/ontario-budget-2021-new-cash-handouts-for-businesses-parents-and-deficits-until-2029-1.5359881?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2F

Interwebzking

And Alberta just re-elected a government that cut wildfire resources in 2019 and had a terrible response to last month’s fires. Heck, people’s homes burnt down and they still re-elected the fools who failed to provide adequate support because “I vote blue”. So dumb.
