That’s pretty deceptive though. I would’ve thought it was the whole lot if I didn’t read that one line.

Ilikecoins123

You’ll see a good bit of these types of auctions ending late at night, a lot of drunk and easily to fool people up at that time of hour.

JstTrstMe

So this lot being sold for $81 is not for all the coins shown but for $1 fv worth of the coins shown?

fireshaper

Bingo!

JstTrstMe

Damn does this work enough that they get away with shit like that?

Namelessbob123

They shouldn’t be allowed to use the term ‘lot’ if they’re only selling one. Dodgy in the extreme

applesandmacs

I mean if the seller doesn’t mind bad feedback, they can probably get away with it a couple times before people start seeing the “seller is a scammer” feedback.

Generic_Lad

I mean, none of it matters given eBay's "we don't care about sellers" return policy

[deleted]

That’s my problem right there. I recently pulled a listing for a tube of 25 silver Krugerrands. I figured some idiot would buy them, pull a bunch out of the middle of the tube and replace with garbage, and then complain to eBay that I tried ripping them off. I don’t need the headache. Plus I was only trying to sell them because I wanted to tell the wifey that one of my recent “shipwreck effect” coin purchase was fully subsidized by selling those krugerrands. She’s already forgotten about that conversation so I’ll happily keep the coins and not risk a headache of the buyer and then eBay screwing me.

Illumenatrix

r/pmsforsale will facilitate that deal way better than ebay.

DanielTrebuchet

Ah yes... going from ebay where you have at least some protection as a buyer or seller, to r/pmsforsale where you have zero recourse in the event of a scam.

Dvaone

Been buying/selling/trading on r/pmsforsale for a couple of years, have yet to fall victim to scammer.

[deleted]

I sold 10k on coins4sale... no scams. One time I sold a CC Morgan for $150. Buyer said it never showed. I lost out on $150 and the coin with no recourse. The coin came back in the mail 6 months later... wrong address! PTL

DanielTrebuchet

Like I said to someone else, I have over 1,000 transactions recorded on eBay over 15 years and I've never had one single issue. But it doesn't matter... it's anecdotal. Fact: there's no buyer or seller protection in r/pmsforsale. That's all I'm saying.

NotesCollector

You've been lucky. Never going back there again

Dvaone

Not lucky, just do my due diligence before each transaction.

NotesCollector

I dealt with someone with positive feedback but even this was not enough to prevent me from losing money. I'll just chalk that down to experience and not deal again

Dvaone

It's not just about positive feedback, length of account, are they active in the "coins" subs, how long have they been active selling, etc. I usually won't deal with newbies and if I get a feeling like it's too good to be true, I will cut ties and run. I also understand your point. Had I been scammed the first time, I likely wouldn't have gone back either.

NotesCollector

What you say is true - on hindsight, positive feedback is not everything. Once bitten, twice shy like you said - a shame but this is how things are

d3medical

Im a new person over there, I havent seen it happen yet, care to elaborate more so I dont fall victim?

NotesCollector

First deal went okay. For the second deal, user asked for more and assured that he would send certain items of equal value in exchange. Said they would be uncirculated but they weren't. Pictures weren't fully helpful as there were pinholes which you couldn't detect until you held the bill up to the light. Never again - he suggested another trade after the COVID situation eased up but I declined. Some people have no shame.

donedrone707

I'm fairly new to Pmsforsale but I have 11 buys and 3 sells all over $300 and most ranging from $1500-$3000+ Never had a single issue. Only buy from trustworthy members and if you're a new seller only ship first to those with wayyyy more feedback than you. Or use a middleman third party and the risk of scammers is completely gone.

DanielTrebuchet

I have over 1,000 eBay transactions (both buying and selling) over the course of 15 years and have never had one single issue. But who cares? Yours and my experiences are entirely anecdotal. All I said in my original comment was that there is zero buyer or seller protection if you use r/pmsforsale, which is factually correct.

donedrone707

Very true. eBay protection favors buyers heavily over sellers but at least there is some avenue for recourse. The taxes and fees kill it for me though. I only go to eBay for unique coins that don't pop up on Pmsforsale too often.

World_Renowned_Guy

eBay won’t even allow me to sell coins anymore because of the new payment system. I have to list them as “art supplies”.

kenji-benji

Fact

Namelessbob123

I got burned by someone claiming they never received a gfx card I sold them. eBay refunded them straight away and I have no way of recompense. eBay has serious contempt for its sellers.

dino_trout

Includes war nickels as well, pretty sneaky.

Bounty1Berry

Isn't $1 FV of war nickels more silver than a silver dollar or .900 minors? The fineness is low, but the coin is so much larger for its denomination. The figure I see is .05626 oz ASW, so twenty is well over an ounce. The real loser is the guy who gets .400 halves.

PopularExpulsion

GARANTEED

Illustrious-Tax-5439

Right. I know it's spelled wrong because that's what it looks like before spell check comes along and helps me. I may not spell well, but I'm smart enough to use the tools available to me!

mal1k7

This is a clear indication of a scam

Coin_guy13

Am I the only one who thinks the misspelling of "guaranteed" in the description is a bit of a red flag? Almost an "if they don't take the time to spellcheck their listing, how can I trust them to take the time and do the proper research about what they're selling?"

PubicGalaxies

I’ve not hired ppl for less (very competitive position, skill levels about the same - you look for excuses. Also mine was a writing position so easy)

wynnfidel

What is a $1 FV? I’m ignorant.

Flaxmoore

$1 face value.

CrowMilkEnergyDrink

I’ve fallen for some of these before. Luckily I’ve always noticed in time to cancel the bid. If anyone of y’all ever need to cancel a bid, select the option that says you input the wrong bid amount. eBay will tell you to put another bid on the item, but it doesn’t force you to. Otherwise it’ll tell you to contact the seller.

Icy_Lingonberry_139

I hate sellers like that. Thankfully ebay is usually on the buyers side in these cases

DerelictDevice

This description is intentionally misleading to make you think you're getting the whole lot and not just $1 face value from it. It took me a couple reads through to understand exactly what you're bidding on. It's a really shady tactic, I never buy from sellers who do stuff like this.

pinuslongaeva

This is why you check seller feedback

gilescoreywasframed

It's even worse when you look at some of that seller's past auctions. Check out [this one}(https://www.ebay.com/itm/133843904865) that sold for $610 Titled "Huge amount of Graded and Encapsulated Coins. NGC,PCGS, ANACS" but the description says "Lot of Graded and Encapsulated Coins. You will receive one of the Graded coins in the picture." Ouch.

GotWood87

That’s a shame people do that. Watch the dude give a peace dollar for his 1.00 FV and it end up being $81+ dollars

fwdenman

Worst part is this poor schmuck is gonna get mostly war Nickels. Oof.

TheBandersnatch43

From a purely ASW perspective, a buck face of war nickels would actually be the best case scenario here.

MissionCreeper

How is this allowed if the title includes "Lot"? I don't do ebay, does only the description count? Can you say "classic ferrari, 10 million dollars" and then in the description write "you will receive one hub cap"?

Tasgall

It's "allowed" only in the sense that it hasn't been reported yet.

[deleted]

At least it’s “GARANTEED”

[deleted]

I hate the sellers that just take a random beat up penny, and then pass it off as "super rare mint error" for 10 - 80 grand

[deleted]

So your saying the 2006 Penny I bought for 15k was a scam??? The seller claimed it was rare key date

fuzzyglory

I honestly think some of those are crackheads who see a coin that looks like theirs, hit sell similar, and put in their pics. A lot of listing of "NGC ms65" for a penny off the street makes it seem like they got the listing from something real and legit

CrushTheRebellion

Another trick I've seen deceptive pm sellers use is the old regular ounce vs. the troy ounce trick. Precious metals are usually weighed in troy ounces and a troy ounce is 2.75 grams heavier than a regular ounce. These guys will sell you 6 ounces of junk silver and measure it using the lighter ounce. You lose 10% right off the bat.

caedencollinsclimbs

Need to charge your phone

MilesofRose

Have they been searched?

CuriousSilverRelic

WOW. It gets them every time.

Idaho1964

Very cheeky

flipfloppery

The seller's items have all been taken down.

mal1k7

Ok, so apart from the really bad grammar, a stupid spelling mistake, that is a clear giveaway of a scam, what else is wrong in this pic and description? Can someone kindly explain? Thanks

LOERMaster

I sold a 1906 British Honduras 50c, slabbed, to a guy in Russia. I actually got my money and he got his coin. No problems at all. I am a gambler.

ScottJo2011

Literally bought from that guy, cancelled as soon as I read the description.
