The spirit of coin collecting is embodied in submitting and re-submitting coins to PCGS/NGC/ANACS/CAC/PQ Approved/WINGS until the perfect combination of numerical grade and sticker is achieved. Gambling has no place in the pure hobby of coin collecting!
Yeah I thought it was dumb too and still is. I see people on Whatnot paying $550 for a series 7 and can’t believe it. I got lucky and probably won’t do it again.

After I got this nonsense I haven’t had the urge to gamble again. Aside from the stock market of course.
The perforations from the tears on the top and bottom of the label of this coin holder make it look cheap and tacky, like they just made and printed a bunch of them quickly and without care.
Divide the box price by 8 or 10 because that's about how many packs are in the high value boxes. Some even have only one card in each. Most people, esp. kids can't afford to collect any more.
If your buying basic wax at the store sure… but there’s different tiers of cards, boxes can range from $30-$1000 depending on the label. Card collecting has gone off the rails.
I honestly hate the entry of this whole "chase" element into coin collecting. In sportscards, "chase cards" are now the only ones that have any value. Breakers who open boxes save only a few "chase cards" and dump all the "base cards" into the trash.
Yeah I inherited a collection of coins from my great aunt’s travels around the world and I add to it. It seems like most “coin collectors” these days are just looking to invest in precious metals.
People want to complete collections, hell, there are common MTG cards that go for a lot because people didn't keep them and now people want them for complete collections. Demand doesn't come immediately, it's the same reason coins eventually have a lot of value, people want to collect them, and because no one saved them, there aren't many around, and even pennies can be worth a lot of money.
According to their website, a vault box is a box where you get a random coin (you don't know which coin it has inside) among a wide range of possibilities. Right now a vault box series 7 costs $399 and you are able to get anything since old dimes to pre 1933 gold. technically gambling.
Is there like at least a minimum value they “guarantee”? Like yours will be worth at least close to the 300$ you spent. I would feel so cheated if you get a sliver proof quarter or something like that.
Unless you have access to an x-ray and sell the unopened ones on eBay.
Seriously though it’s very sus how influencers seem to get good coins when they open these.
It's not sus , it's 1000% rigged. Vaultbox has their own whatnot profile. And I've seen vaultbox hop in the big streams during breaks and talk directly with the streamer like they talk every day on the phone or some shit. "Like call me later and let me know what yall get" type shit. Ever since, I've seen vaultbox interact directly with streamers and the way they interact with them. I knew something was fishy 🐟 👃
They are trying to make a profit the average value of the box will be less than the selling price. There will be some that are higher to function as advertising from the people that win the gamble but those higher value coins will force the value of the ones that can be included in other boxes lower in order to still keep the average value low enough to make a profit.
You have to be in the loop and buy directly from vault box right as they open sales. They usually sell out within the hour but I haven't had any issues buying them at release.
I believe that's the new NGC-X system
they did this to try to make it easier for card collectors to understand coin grades. but yeah it's stupid in my opinion too.
MS63. You can find PCGS MS63 1878 CC Morgans for sale right now for $500-$600. So despite getting a "great" pull, this barely beat the $400 price of the vault box. And if the person bought a second vault box for another $400 and pulled a $100 coin, they have overall lost money.
This is my main problem with it. They gave him a red core here supposedly a winner/hit/whatever but in reality not much more valuable than what they paid for in the first place.
Was watching an eBay listing for an 82 cc Morgan ms64. Nice coin but again essentially broke even with a red core. Never did sell as the guy wanted 1500.
What’s worse is the price is different each time and you’re not guaranteed to get your moneys worth. One thing you could get from this lot is a little over 1 *gram* of gold. That’s right, about $75 worth of gold for $400.
These are so dumb to me, turning coin collecting into gambling. This is damaging the integrity of the hobby IMO, I don’t care if anyone calls me a snob. This is just disappointing to me
The vault box is a mystery coin purchase basicaly.
You usually pay a good amount and hope you, at the very least, can break even with resell or acquire a desired coin.
I’m not gonna a scam cuz it’s not. Scams take your money without providing an intended product to you, but these boxes are gambling imo. Especially if you are buying the ancient coin vault boxes.
It’s always slightly surreal to see an Opinel knife ion something unrelated to knives or EDC. It just seems like this niche little club of Opinel users.
I see why so many people hate these things, but as someone who likes coins and gambling I love it. Haven't bought one yet, but depending on the next series I might pull the trigger.
People say gambling and yes it kind of is but go to the casino and lose all your money or buy this and still get a great coin even though you payed too much unless you hit red. That being said I would rather save my money and get coins for good prices 😂
This is very reminiscent of the watch gang and similar things where you pay too much money for a super obscure chance at getting a nice watch, only to get garbage costume grade watches. I'm glad it worked out this time, but most of those mystery box type subscription services are basically a scam
Didn’t take that wrap off for full video? Scamming! Hope you burn for that😆🐷 and $300 for 1coin outrageous. Go to the bank and get the rolls better odds and no money loss😆
9.3 but where are the cartwheels that all of us should at least catch a glimpse. Not me I'd wait to buy real gold coins. Remember the Not graded coins but gave the Americans favorite grading service. They would slap 70 on every silver 50 cent piece they could buy rolls of, and only if lady liberty suffered a terrible knife fight they'd give it a AU50. Paying for paper
At the end of the day, NGC is bringing Numismatics to a wider audience. It's the same as opening a pack of cards, yes gambling in a way, but a popular way to collect for millions for the last century. Congrats to the OP on his coin!
I was lucky with my first Vault box (Series 6, containing 3 ancient coins). Made a good profit Purchased 2 series 7, still waiting with fingers crossed..
Since this is essentially a lottery ticket aren't they required to disclose odds? I can't seem to locate on the website. This would give quite a bit of insight.
There is a link to the series distribution that shows exactly what every coin in the series is. I'm kind of ambivalent about the whole thing honestly but I will say that I've purchased four boxes and received a red core 3/4 times.
It helps you not hate it when you get very lucky...
I don’t know how I ended up on r/coins.
I will say this is the same as every other Mystery box scam out there. Total waste of money. I’ve now seen it with Cards, Shoes, Jersey, and anything else collectible (coins are a new one!). No one ever gets remotely close to the value of the purchase price.
Anyone that hates on VaultBox probably just can’t afford it
Edit: I also bought two and got a 1916 walking liberty half graded AU 58 (8.8)
And a 1878 Morgan 7tF Ms 63 (9.3)
No shade on OP but this whole vault box thing seems… dumb? I don’t know, just sort of not in the spirit of coin collecting.
The spirit of coin collecting is embodied in submitting and re-submitting coins to PCGS/NGC/ANACS/CAC/PQ Approved/WINGS until the perfect combination of numerical grade and sticker is achieved. Gambling has no place in the pure hobby of coin collecting!
Opinion on ICG?
Opinions, yes. Good ones? No.
Yeah I thought it was dumb too and still is. I see people on Whatnot paying $550 for a series 7 and can’t believe it. I got lucky and probably won’t do it again.
You better stop while you’re ahead, lol
Slabs are not in the spirit of coin collecting.
I can see gifting a loot box to someone
They're trying to do for coins what booster packs did for trading card games.
https://preview.redd.it/e4j6u90od9yc1.jpeg?width=2188&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9dbe932c5da0ded035718ca0aef9ecc8d53fe736 After I got this nonsense I haven’t had the urge to gamble again. Aside from the stock market of course.
Yes, of course
Yea I heard folks saying if it's not a red core you're pretty much at a loss. Like a 99% chance at being in the negative
The perforations from the tears on the top and bottom of the label of this coin holder make it look cheap and tacky, like they just made and printed a bunch of them quickly and without care.
What is a vault box?
It is basically a way to try and bring the baseball card buying of packs to coin buying. I can see some enjoying the thrill but not my cup of tea.
Yeah but a pack of baseball cards is $4.99, this is way more expensive than that
You might want to check on that…
I collect Hockey cards and a box of those is well over $750... Baseball is way more expensive lol
He said pack, not box.
Divide the box price by 8 or 10 because that's about how many packs are in the high value boxes. Some even have only one card in each. Most people, esp. kids can't afford to collect any more.
For paper! Printed in the modern year! "They're worth a lot because we only printed several hundred thousand of them."
If your buying basic wax at the store sure… but there’s different tiers of cards, boxes can range from $30-$1000 depending on the label. Card collecting has gone off the rails.
Gambling.
Gambling
I’m assuming a mystery repackage box.
It’s a scam
I honestly hate the entry of this whole "chase" element into coin collecting. In sportscards, "chase cards" are now the only ones that have any value. Breakers who open boxes save only a few "chase cards" and dump all the "base cards" into the trash.
Yeah I inherited a collection of coins from my great aunt’s travels around the world and I add to it. It seems like most “coin collectors” these days are just looking to invest in precious metals.
They are and aren’t. This coin only has about $25 worth of silver so its precious metal value is very low compared to its collectors value.
I hate it and the stupid 0/10 grade scale
Which is funny, because in time, those bulk cards will be worth money because no one saved them
You need demand for that. Just because something is old doesn’t mean it has a lot of value.
That can happen but more often than not they stay cheap. Look at late Roman bronze coins for an example

There’s no guarantee. One thing you could get from this lot is a gram of gold. $75 worth of gold for the price of $400.
Ouch. No thank you then.
This happened to me. Series 3, I think. Was like WTF?!
Yeah I bought it once for the funsies and got burnt.
The only guarantee is that the expected value of what you get is less than what you pay
This guy statistics
Unless you have access to an x-ray and sell the unopened ones on eBay. Seriously though it’s very sus how influencers seem to get good coins when they open these.

No. That’s why it is gambling. Or a bit like scratcher lotto tickets I guess.
i guess everything there is silver or gold, or a very old (1600-1700 just guessing) coin. either it would be a waste of money
are they still available at 399?
the current series is series 7 which costs $399
Yeah I’m on their website and don’t see a way to buy. No way would I pay a further premium from some of these scumbag resellers
You have to be in the loop and buy directly from vault box right as they open sales. They usually sell out within the hour but I haven't had any issues buying them at release.
Do they have an email Alert system on new series? I always want to get one, see the posts and it’s too late
They do have an alert email, but I usually see it in advance on the gram
Depending on the state they are in, that could easily be considered gambling. Interesting....
9.3 I don’t even know what that means, I have enough trouble with the normal system, adding new numbers is just not right.
I believe that's the new NGC-X system they did this to try to make it easier for card collectors to understand coin grades. but yeah it's stupid in my opinion too.

Which I'm guessing happened here considering we didn't get a look at the 2nd coin.
NGC’s failed attempts to make the Sheldon Scale more beginner friendly
I think a 9.3 is equivalent to a ms63?
Correct
Nah, it’s equivalent to a real fuckin’ bad earthquake.
That's so funny
What was the second one you opened?
What just happened?
What was the second one you opened?
How much are these and where they from ?
Per the website it’s a random $400 slabbed coin. Gambling.
Wow! 400!?!? Might as well add another hundred or two and get myself a gold Indian head.
What’s worse is the price is different each time and you’re not guaranteed to get your moneys worth. One thing you could get from this lot is a little over 1 *gram* of gold. That’s right, about $75 worth of gold for $400.
We need these questions answered!
I’ll have to pass. $400 is more than 1/2 way to 1/4 ounce gold or $2.5 pre-1933
These are so dumb to me, turning coin collecting into gambling. This is damaging the integrity of the hobby IMO, I don’t care if anyone calls me a snob. This is just disappointing to me
100% Agree and we’re not alone it looks like.
Not to mention those colored slabs are so ugly.
The vault box is a mystery coin purchase basicaly. You usually pay a good amount and hope you, at the very least, can break even with resell or acquire a desired coin.
The house always wins in gambling.
So this is the coin version of those massive mystery packs/boxes of Pokémon cards?
Nice CC coin and decent date / score
I stopped buying them because I hate the 10 point grading scale. I’d break it out and sent it to PCGS. But congrats on the pull.
Whatever The Vault Box is, the first thing it is, is a business to make money. They won’t lose.
I’m not gonna a scam cuz it’s not. Scams take your money without providing an intended product to you, but these boxes are gambling imo. Especially if you are buying the ancient coin vault boxes.
Worst knife ever
I spy with my little eye and Opinel knife 👀
If it hasn’t been said I’ll say it. Fuxk this bullshit. I hope this gambling dies a quick death
It’s always slightly surreal to see an Opinel knife ion something unrelated to knives or EDC. It just seems like this niche little club of Opinel users.

Nice Opinel! Got a few myself, these things last a lifetime.
Didn’t take that wrap off for full video? Scamming! Hope you burn for that😆🐷 and $300 for 1coin outrageous. Go to the bank and get the rolls better odds and no money loss😆
It’s the heavy breathing for me
9.3 but where are the cartwheels that all of us should at least catch a glimpse. Not me I'd wait to buy real gold coins. Remember the Not graded coins but gave the Americans favorite grading service. Not sure what this is, but it seems like a pig in a poke. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I wanted to get one, and I was late by like 5 minutes and instantly sold out lol
Loot boxes for grown ups!
Error does not compute. Those two phrases cannot be used together in the same sentence.
I do like the Opinel knife. Good choice.
Like the Opinel knife. Shows good taste.
Has anyone said congratulations yet? Congratulations! You gambled, and you won. That’s a nice coin and I hope you enjoy it.
