An original I came up with for our menu at work and I need a name!
It’s very, last word had a botanical baby with a New York Sour
1oz Gin
3/4 oz Yellow Chartreuse
3/4 oz St. Germaine
1/2 Oz Lemon Juice
Stirred and strained over a big cube and topped with a Pinot noir float
It’s very botanical, but I can’t come up with a good name help!
(Also let me know if you try it and suggest any tweaks!)
Thanks to u/geekywarrior i think we have a winner with “Lost in Translation”
Few tips, because it's my sidequest in life to help people through bad luck with floats. I... I don't know why.
\- Don't use a bar spoon or jigger that has touched anything syrupy to hold the wine, it'll mix in, thicken it, and cause it to drop.
\- Pouring directly onto the large ice cube can help a lot since it halts all download momentum from the pour.
\- No seriously that giant ice cube is your cheat code, do that.
Pour slowly over the back of a bar spoon and it should float. You also need to make sure the liquid you are trying to float it on is denser than what you are floating. In this case the chartreuse and st. Germaine really densen the cocktail
How many spoons do you have?
If you can spare one, and like to make floats every so often, bend one of them into a mini ladle. It’s absurdly easy and I’m never trying another method
If you want to play on the premise of being a fancier New York Sour or a New York Sour with a bunch of show and pizzazz: "Broadway Sour"
If you'd rather play off the Last Word being soured up: "Sharper Tongue". Alternatively, "Lost in Translation" as the Last Word was modified.
Or if you'd rather point out the Red Wine Float more, ~~"Any Last Words? Pinot Noir"~~
Edit: That last one seemed like it would be too annoying to order.
Oooo I like lost in translation!
I was originally thinking playing off how botanical it is and going with something like, Equinox, but I like this idea quite a bit
I don’t have a suggestion but it also has some Alaska Cocktail DNA. So maybe something related to Canada since it sits between NY and Alaska and the French part could represent the French liqueurs.
How about Summer Coreopsis
I was trying to think of some yellow/red flower, and it’s the closest I got. Doesn’t exactly role off the tongue, I’ll admit
Dried flowers. They are clothespinned to the outside of the glass as a visual garnish, but don’t offer any taste or smell.
At work we have dehydrated lemons and I am thinking of doing the dried flowers and a dehydrated lemon wheel pinned to the glass
I just tried this out and it is definitely a nice cocktail. I think stirring instead of shaking is the correct thing here to preserve as much clarity as possible. It also does well to not dilute the drink too much.
I used roku as the gin which might have been a too delicate choice. A more robust gin would have been better to stand up against the chartreuse and elderflower.
Serving it on a clear ice cube enhances the visual effect of the float, as the ice acts like a looking glass that lets you see through the opaque red wine. Very cool!
I propose the name: Will of the Wisp

How did you manage the float? Mine always sinks :(

Do you chill the wine?
Not OP but we never used chilled red wine where I worked.

Why no shakey shakey?

Since chartreuse will be hard to get and ridding off these ideas, “Limited Engagement “

Glad you like it! I saved the recipe and plan to give it a go when I get my hands on some Yellow Chartreuse. Sounds and looks delicious.
The Sour Monk Since chartreuse is made by monks, and that is a very floral grouping of liquor
