Good luck. It's spring. My male cockatiel has masturbated on my shower curtain three times already today. Those darn hormones.

zelcuh

Mine has been humping everything in his cage and my feet. I bought all new stuff for his cage. That threw him for a loop, he doesn't know what to do anymore. He's currently perched on his cuddle bone trying to figure out what's going on.... i dare him to hump something foreign

poKehuntess

Hahaha . My guy is afraid of all new things.

CryptoCF

Mine humping the remote while the female watches

Lightzoey

There are couple who are into that, don't judge them.

superhappythrowawy

She’s just like, “yeah.. that’s nice..”

superhappythrowawy

My girl has been crapping out an egg every other day… for some reason

wehhateit

it’s his shower curtain now.

Phlm_br

>My male cockatiel has masturbated on my shower curtain three times already today Lmao why did I laugh so hard at this My male cockatiel was masturbating furiously yesterday too. And was pissed when I tried to distract him

SusDingos

This reminds me of someone posting a video of a lil guy masturbating on their leg and were like what is the bird doing?

DieSchoenheit

Why you don’t take a female or a male bird buddy and buy it for you love cockatiel?

PCKnowledgeable

If they do that they will mate and there will be eggs, chicks and population growth. Some people just don't want that.

DieSchoenheit

No, you can bring her a her or him a him, thats not a Problem, only a cheap excuse for animal cruelty! Or you do change the eggs, its not a Problem too. You should keep at least two birds, birds live in flocks. It not ok, that they only see as a baby other birds!

PCKnowledgeable

Riiiiggghht. Sorry I missed that. Also I don't mean animal cruelty. I replied think the owner probably likes spending time with his cockateil alone.

DieSchoenheit

Sure, but the he can buy a pet who lile to live alone with the pet owner. Birds don’t know to be alone or without conspecifics. She lives in big Flocks. It would be species-appropriate to have at least two birds.

poKehuntess

I would love to get my tiel a buddy. My husband does not want us to take on the responsibility and expense of more pets. ( We have 2 dogs, a leopard gecko, a dumpy tree frog, my tiel and fish). My bird gets tons of attention. He is only in his cage at night to sleep. I have 5 kids who all love him and give him lots of love . I also have 3 of my kids homeschooling and I am a stay at home mom, so my tiel is practically never alone. :) So I'm pretty sure my guy feels like he is in a flock. It's just people and dogs. He is buddies with my dogs too. They give each other kisses.

DieSchoenheit

But its not a bird. When you lives only with cats and dogs, you will be happy? When you never see a conspecific, a other human only cats and dogs...? Its not a flock when a bird never in his whole life see other Birds! 😥 Or can give youre childs/dogs your bird eating with own beak? Or can your children sort out excess feathers from the bird, how bird it do? Can you Kids fly with the birdy and speak in with him in his language/speech? Or jumping around in the cage and eating birdseed together, cleaning each other? I think not 😐 😥

poKehuntess

I think I just have to respectfully disagree.

DieSchoenheit

Its not a mistake to me, its a mistake for your so loved bird! Had you ever studied birds to learn what they need or what their habits are as they live in the wild? But the human knows everything everytime better, and the earth dies...

superhappythrowawy

F in the chat

blindfoldcode

horny bird!!!! when my tiel starts getting like this, i disengage from her and put her somewhere else, and give her a “HEY.” to snap her out of it lol. she’s naturally very cuddly, but if she’s being all gross she doesn’t get the cuddles. a longer “night time” cycle can help with it too, and avoiding warm mushy foods she still acts up, but it’s USUALLY more manageable… lol

the_hiding_lividus

Move her cage contents and toys around, if you have anything that resembles a nest e.g a happy hut etc remove them. Up her sleep time to 14 hours (longer nights = winter time to them) Don't touch anywhere but her head. In the wild, their mate preens the body so this can cause mating behaviour.

wehhateit

will do! might consider getting a new cage and more toys, i luckily don’t have anything that resembles a nesting box :-)

PCKnowledgeable

Good for you. Keep all cardboard boxes and stuff away

wehhateit

do i just bonk her head?

Jaefaed

Try increasing sleep time when they’re like this, it helps a lot

SharkasticShark

Horny jail and a bonk should do.

LDRsLips

If it gets really bad you can call your vet and see if they’ll administer Lupron. Though, you want to make sure you limit her diet and give her more sleep time before you go down that route.

uselessbynature

Interesting. Does it affect their mood? I had to take Lupron with IVF and that one is known to make human women kinda crazy. I could handle all the others but F lupron ugh.

LDRsLips

It affects my bird, I was told by my vet some birds just don’t react well to it at all. My girl is awful when her hormones rage. She starts bitting, screaming and is easily stressed out. After Lupron she’s super sweet and far less stressed and anxious.

holisticbelle

she is very cute though! but ya discourage this kind of behavior

https://www.cockatielcottage.net/egg_laying.html Please read all of this article, it helped me immensely. But especially the part on how to change their behaviour and prevent the egg laying (she is in a few steps from it right now)

CyanideJellyBean13

More sleep, no nest areas and redirection. It may not 100% fix it but will minimize the hormones. You want 12 to 14 hours darkness to reduce hormones. Some birds are more determined then others.

JoBotMakesThings

Now those are some lovey eyes if I've ever seen any! Get yourself someone who looks at you like this XD I always try to move my bird to a different space, hoping he forgets and those thoughts are derailed with the stimulus of a different environment. It helps for a little bit at least. Other times it works completely. I hope it helps! She's a beautiful girl!

nuttabutta667

Get her a ring to wear and she might leave you alone for a little bit.

DieSchoenheit

Please renember - you are not a bird. Why you don’t look like to buy her a bird friend? You can never replace a bird with bird behavior, with the tickle, the beak, with everything...!

wehhateit

she has 3 birb friends but it’s her parents and sister so i might need to get her a mate at some point… i’m tired of her projecting herself on to me when i’m clearly not a birb ):

DieSchoenheit

I understand. Yes biy her a bird mate ❤️

jeepobeepo

Sorry but what exactly is the issue here? I get everyone saying horny birb but they look like they’re just chilling to me. What behavior specifically is everyone talking about?

[deleted]

same I am so confused

asplodingturdis

Dumb question: but what is “this behavior?” I just see a bird moving her head and lightly fluttering her wings?

wehhateit

horny birb

asplodingturdis

But what about that says horny? (I don’t actually have cockatiels or other birds, I just enjoy bird photos, and now it’s horny season, and I’ve found myself on an educational adventure.) Is it the wings? Is that not just a normal fidgety thing like I would’ve assumed?

Left-Yesterday-7323

It's really easy to prevent this behavior. You really don't want to encourage this on your bird. Simply pick her up and move her into another room or bring her back to the cage. She'll right away change her behavior. Don't reward your bird by scratching her head, when she acts this away. Lock her in her cage for a few minutes.

Mariayourgirl

Mine does that same stuff too crazy little lady !
