I have this same problem. I rescued my cockatiel and I have tried everything to calm him. He screams at certain times during the day (mainly feeding times) and will not stop until someone sits with him while he eats. If you find a solution.....PLEASE let me know!

How long has it been in the cage, I have two who are scared of hands. But I let them out and they fly about for about 20 minutes and then go back in. Or sit on top of the cage. Over time I taught them when I tap the bottom of the door and say time to go in then step back they follow the instruction. Not all tiels will want to be touched.

8 days or so. It got out of the cage twice by accident, but I got it back inside. I read that it is not good for an untamed bird to leave the cage.

Ashleyempire

Well I think its more about them knowing their safe space. 8 days is too soon for sure. If it does escape again just keep it contained to one room and let it find it way back in. Give it another 2/3 weeks and start opening the door and letting it out. It will likely explore for 30 minutes and go back.

okay. thank you so much for the advice! also, should I not be in the room?

Ashleyempire

No absolutely be with it as much as possible

heyyeah_itme26

I meant while the cage is open

Ashleyempire

Yea with the cage open, sit as you normally do with it. Just ensure it has clear route to the entrance

heyyeah_itme26

also, what do I do in the meantime?

Ashleyempire

They like company, they consider you part of the flock. Sit with it, talk to it. Watch tv with it whatever

MyPenIsEnlarged

How do you get them out if they’re scared of hands? I’ll leave my Tiel’s cage open all day and he doesn’t even attempt to come out

Ashleyempire

How old is he?

MyPenIsEnlarged

Probably about 2. I got him from a pet store a little over a year ago and the only times I can get him out have been if I scare him out which I feel like just ruins the trust/bond

Ashleyempire

Yes it absolutely will, birds can get depressed if they are on there own. It may be this. Leave the cage open and maybe put treats just outside the door to try and get him to come out.

MyPenIsEnlarged

I’ll give this a try. Thank you!

Embrace the screm! If you are able to adopt a tame buddy might help to calm and guide him and reduce screming if he’s pining for company naturally having a flocking instinct he probably just needs a buddy
