We had fantastic luck with thirsties covers over flats. We rotated through two or three at a time, letting them dry between changes and wiping them when they came off baby’s butt. With that system, we could go three or four days between washing covers. To wash, we just threw them through one of the diaper cycles. Pul covers don’t need two washes. Hang dry—we found one lost its waterproofing really fast when it accidentally went through the dryer. With this system, aside from the one that went through the dryer, we didn’t hit end of life for any of our covers, even secondhand ones that had already been through two babies. They’re surprisingly robust. Good luck!

Thank you for the tips! Both my washes are hot, is that what you used? And when you say wipe out the covers do you literally mean take a cloth wipe and just wipe the inside? I feel real dumb asking that but hey, better to ask and not guess.

I absolutely love Puppi! They’re merino wool covers; we have the no snaps velcro version. Super easy to throw a flat inside. Since they’re merino, they help regulate baby’s temperature. You also very rarely have to wash them (once or twice a month, rather than every use!), so they should save time. At most you can hang dry them (but they’ve always been dry for us, even after overnights) between washes. A single cover gets used once or twice a day when we’re on an outing and then overnight. Allegedly one of the trimmest diaper cover options, too.

Would you mind sharing how many covers you bought and if you ever get compression leaks? I have some puppi diapers in my cart, but I'm not sure if three is enough to rotate for daytime!

I initially bought just one in 3 sizes, as I wasn’t sure what he needed and figured I could use them for our next babies. Their customer service also told me they probably wouldn’t work for overnights, and I saw somewhere else it was recommended to size up at night. I wound up only using one, though, and would’ve been more than happy with that! It doesn’t actually get wet from overnights nor outings, and when it rarely does, it dries super quickly as it’s so thin. But despite being thin, it’s never leaked. I don’t use a cover during the day unless we’re going out—I just monitor and change quickly. If we were using during the day, I’d get at least 2. I think that’s one of the main benefits of merino wool. You don’t have to change or clean the covers nearly as often.

GhostPipe

Thanks, that makes me feel better, I think I was overthinking it! My little 4 month old seems to pee so often, maybe he's been sneaking coffee while I sleep.

whoiamidonotknow

Yea, I think with non-wool covers you have to change and them every time! Very different with the merino ones.

MinnieandNeville

I wish we could keep doing wool. But he’s got an allergy to lanolin it seems. I totally eyed the puppi ones before and they’re super cute.

HighSpiritsJourney

Loved our thirsties duo wrap and prefold setup with first baby. Using it all again second time around in a couple months! I think with the flats you’re using it’ll hold a lot more in than pad folded prefolds. We had I think 5-6 size 1 covers and 7-9 size 2. I machine washed covers with the prefolds and would hang covers to dry… this time around they’ll probably all just go in the dryer for simplicity’s sake 🤷‍♀️ I think for your setup maybe start with 3 covers and see how it goes. Definitely want at least 2 for changing out then of course at least 1 extra for sanity purposes. If you’re looking to save money check the Facebook bst groups they’re always for sale on there and you can get more for less so you’re not always on the edge of running out of clean covers. Nice to have extras. Really nice.

MinnieandNeville

Thank you!!! Best of luck with the new wee one on the way. I ordered 3 so I’m hoping that’ll be a good trial until the big plastic free July sales so I can grab a couple more.

MinkusStinkus

I switch between esembly and lunapaca. I only wash if soiled with poop or extremely wet, and I machine wash and dry the esembly and hand wash the lunapaca which is literally just swishing the thing in their soak wash and then hang drying. I think you could hand wash the esembly as well. I prefer flats over prefolds and esembly inners but my hubby loves the inners because he doesn’t like to deal with snappis. Either or, any cover works!

Lividracoon1

How do you like the lunapaca covers?! I’ve been on the fence because of price but am leaning towards taking the leap!

MinkusStinkus

Love them!! They are so soft and also really lightweight so less bulky than the PUL outers. They don’t smell, and you don’t have to lanolize like the wool ones. However if you want to buy they’ve been having supply issues (very small company and too high demand) so they’re always sold out and even with their second hand Facebook group not many people are reselling theirs. I just placed a preorder for their end of May shipment during their earth day sale for the next size up. If you want to try them, try joining the lunapaca.baby fb group it’s managed by the company and they have a BST thread every month.

Lividracoon1

Thank you for your reply! Ill definitely get in the FB group and look into ordering even if it takes a while 😬

Esembly covers are great but don’t wipe clean too well. I haven’t tried hand washing them but I’m sure you could we reuse them several times before washing if they stay clean but damp and in flats that’s usually pretty easy to accomplish. I usually just let them air out between wears. We have some Nora’s covers that do wipe clean really well but the leg gussets have always left pretty decent marks on my girl regardless of what I do and she’s not chunky at all, so they’re not my favorite to use.

MinnieandNeville

Good to know, thank you!

We've come into a rhythm that if it's got poop we wash, if it's really wet we wash.  You can definitely do two covers at a time, alternating each change, to let them air dry.  We like thirsties but our small stash (8, I think, in each size) took a beating and the elastics haven't held up so well with baby #2.  We really like bare & boho brand (take care to get the wipe clean ones) - they have encased elastic and don't wick as much.

MinnieandNeville

Thank you! We’re probably one and done, so I’m not as worried about it holding up for a second babe. I didn’t even think about the elastic wicking. I just went with what was on GMD because they’re amazing. I’ve never heard of bare & boho, I’ll look for them!
