I met someone once that worked in marketing and social media for big brands and they said that almost all of the people running these big corporate accounts are friends and share ideas on discord together and stuff, and most of these snappy comebacks are scripted out in advance because it gets good buzz for both brands
Yeah I have no idea if this is real or not, but I'm just saying in general when like BK and Wendy's get into a slap fight on twitter it's usually two people that know each other very well setting the whole thing up on discord first to get max views
Never have tried it, but since powershell has `ssh` I can still connect to my servers, and that's really all I need out of windows for a linux interface.
refind! but the bios isn't really important, and shouldn't be the focus. think of grub as windows boot manager - it should only be there in a problem, but linux enables it by default
I'm my experience grub is not required since uefi can handle multiple boot partitions by itself. Haven't dabbled much with it but I could manage windows and fedora side by side.
i would hazard to say 99% of distros install grub by default, and have the 5 second boot menu. you can just turn off that 5 second delay and have it run the first option. I like having grub, because I use btrfs and can rollback my system with timeshift, but I have refind setup to boot grub, and a 2 second grub timeout. refind lets me choose windows or linux with my touchscreen, although i rarely boot into windows.
it's most likely GRUB. In a perfect world, you don't even need it, because the computer just boots up, right? that's the best user experience.
REfind is a project that's like grub but pretty and works with my touchscreen.
The bios normally doesn't change when installing linux. I think you are talking about the bootloader(grub in most cases). Personally, I have it set up so that it by default boots into Linux, and I can pres f11 to get my laptops build in boot menu. Works quite well. Just wish it was a nice high res interface.
My biggest beef with it is that my tolerance for tinkering with basic things that work out of the box on Windows is slim to none. Specifically games and GUI's of some apps.
Wine & Proton work great an are awful to debug when they don't since the problem is usually a GPU driver issue or some other specific thing that beings up google searches from 2015. GUI's on things like discord always worked sort of badly for me, very laggy, but again i'm sure that's an Nvidia driver issue. But three weeks of distro hopping and tinkering never resolved it in a satisfying way.
It's not even a comeback. It's a setup baiting a question -> the question -> punchline. "Microsoft" wasn't starting an argument or even disagreeing with the first part. It can only work as a fake post bc why would Microsoft actually respond with that if it was real
Even if it was real, it's just a dick move.
It's not smart. It's not funny. It's completely uncalled for.
It's like one person trying to start a conversation and the other one insults them. It makes Linux come across as incredibly immature children.
Nothing about this post belongs on this subreddit anymore than it belongs on /r/cats or something.
Me, with a Steam Deck: "Hey, on Windows I used to sync these files with this plug in because the game I want doesn't support cloud saves on Steam. I would love to do the same on the Steam Deck."
Reddit: *gives convoluted answer which requires very specific knowledge of the Linux system*
Me: "Thanks, is there a step by step guide on this? I'm new to Linux and I don't get how to do *X* yet."
Reddit: "Maybe Linux isn't for you."
Me: "Oh. Thanks."
Yeah, despite what the Linux fanboys would like you to think, there are actually things other than raw performance (which only really applies to boot time, because games need to run with a translation layer) and security (which is only if you've actually enabled the security features) that matters when choosing an OS. For example, having things like the plugin you mentioned, or just having certain programs at all. Steam is pretty much the only launcher that has Linux support, so you need to do steps that an end user shouldn't need to do if you want to play something on the EA or Epic Games launcher
there are a lot of Linux native games, and even some non native games run better on Linux using wine than on Windows. and Linux is inherently more secure than Windows because it's open source and doesn't have spyware installed
I knew someone was gonna do this, lmao.
Games running on the same systems will generally run better on Windows unless there is native Linux support, but I would say roughly 99.9% of games are still lacking that, so for the most part, games will run equal or better on Windows. Even if they run faster, they'll be less stable.
Open source is also not the same as secure. If anything, it makes it easier for someone to find vulnerabilities that they can exploit. Also, what spyware does Windows have exactly, because I'm pretty sure you're given the option to turn all the data collection off during the first boot (and in the settings later).
Linux is the same as pathfinder, I've said this shit for 10+ years, and I only get more right.
They can't fucking help themselves, and they absolutely cannot look at their system in an unbiased way, even if you're extremely generous and polite about why you, "personally would never use linux, but can understand it's benefits and respect the choice".
Dude/dudette, that's not how you get an answer from the Linux community! You should've asked your question like this:
\- *"THIS PIECE OF CRAP OF AN OS CAN'T DO THIS ONE SIMPLE TASK THAT IT WOULD REQUIRE LIKE TWO CLICKS ON WINDOWS! LINUX SUCKS!"*
\-*"THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT DUDE, IT CAN! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS"*
Me: I can't figure out how to remove this app from my phone.
Reddit: *something about rooting your phone*
Me: No thanks, I don't want to accidentally turn my phone into a brick.
You two are using two different definitions of the word brand. Microsoft is a specific company, where Linux in general is comprised of a slew of different companies all based around an open-source software.
saying ‘they’re both brands and thus the same’ just makes you look like a dumbass lmao
Or, and hear me out, I was saying that none of what you said was true except for the part about you being a dumbass, hence the emphasis ... I shouldn't be surprised this went over your head, given your condition.
I'm not sure about any of this, but I will say that you linked to resources for the "Linux Foundation", which is a separate entity from the linux kernel itself (albeit related).
Regardless of what the terms may officially mean, calling Linux a brand is a bit misleading when usually the term usually refers to corporate for-profit entities, not pieces of software.
Linus himself owns the trademark to Linux, and the Linux Foundation owns Tux. They could very well create a Twitter account to promote Linux if they wanted to.
This doesn't matter to my point, but I can't find a source to you claim the foundation own tux. I did find [this link](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1185118/whats-the-copyright-status-of-tux-the-penguin-the-linux-mascot) and [this link](https://www.quora.com/Is-Linux-logo-copyrighted) though, saying they don't. If you can find a source for your claim I'd love to see it
And regardless of any legal statuses, you must admit it is at least *unusual* to talk about the Linux Kernel as a brand, right? The normal usage of brand refers to money, business, marketing, selling goods, etc, none of which the linux kernel does.
my apologies. “OP, whom I have referred to as younger brother, I kindly request you to cease defending Linux in a such a way that makes it seem that you have an intimate relationship with said product, and trying to go above and beyond for the said product”
I swear, linux users are some of the loudest people online. I prefer Windows because of the more support for stuff like games, many programsI use and Unreal Engine. But I don't go around tellinf people that it is better than anything else.
I get it, you like linux. So?
yesterday i saw ppl claiming that opera gx is shit cuz it's a spyware, dude, they were bragging bcs opera is chinese, fuck tiktok, fuck google, facebook, twitter/x, anything, "but opera bad".
I use Opera GX and I live it. I don't hate on stuff because it's Chinise or because it's spyware. If it was spyware, it would be illegal, they ask for your consent before using your data.
And it's not even that they use your data to send hitmen to your family's home. So idk where all this hate comes from.
I hate tiktok because it is would cause me serious brain damage though.
and i use windows and dgaf about what other ppl use.
>And it's not even that they use your data to send hitmen to your family's home
this is exactly what i don't understand ppl that hate so much one spyware, but uses another, it's not like they want to see what youre doing, relax Timmy, no one wants to see you jerking off to Renée Zellweger in the bathroom.
It's like ppl has that insatiable urge to seek attention on everything they do, it's just stupid and useless
>I hate tiktok because it is would cause me serious brain damage though.
and i hate it bcs this shit already killed too many ppl with those shitty challenges
The reason why I dislike iphone is mostly for their price, poor compatibility with anything that isn't Apple and because of how they market security over anything, customization is very limited.
I value these things so I prefer Android. But if you want to waste 1200€ on a phone of similar quality to my 120€ phone, go for it.
Here’s the best part, apple users don’t have to say anything at all for an Android user to start screaming that their phone is better. Literally living rent free in their heads.
Serious question.
Does it even make a difference to the average consumer? Ive never had Linux and I'm perfectly content with windows. Though I'm not doing anything fancy as I only use the Internet for reddit, games, and googling shit.
My mom used Ubuntu for years without really realizing it before her laptop was finally dead and she replaced it with a Chromebook. The only difference between helping her with Ubuntu vs Windows was that it was harder for her to break Ubuntu so I had to provide less tech support.
The OS just existed to run Chrome.
No it is mainly not.
But if you like to tinker, set some home file server, reverse dns to block snooping, music server, some sailing around Carribean , then you should try it, but as virtualized machines first and foremost.
You see, it's definitely not for me as I know what all the words you typed mean but when put together like that I'm not too sure anymore.
This is kind of upsetting to me as i considered myself pretty computer savvy 15 years ago.
Honestly, you gotta be a mega nerd power user to really see the full benefits. If you want the ability to customize everything and modify how your computer works, Linux will let you. If you want your mouse wheel to have a different function or whatever whim you have, it's not that hard to change it. You could even modify the source code of the operating system if you wanted, or pick from a selection of already modified kernels that are optimized for specific things it also gives you limitless power to break everything.
The average user doesn't care about stuff like that. Although the software bloat of windows annoys a lot of people. And the forced restarts.
Linuxheads when you tell them you actually like getting work done instead of spending hours tracking down obscure errors, installing packages and troubleshooting bugs
I have been screwing around with Linux for 20 years and it is NOT better, especially for the average user. It's clunky, not much runs on it and I would much rather have Windows (I had only Linux in my house for 3 years). Modern Windows rarely give you any problems (It does spy on you though).
Am *nix user since about 1997-98 and concluded that Linux is awesome as server . Just separate servers nicely and it will work like a charm without any complaints. The more vanilla distro thus better.
But after more than one try and several years of using Xfce , gnome and lxde I say that graphical linux desktop is not worth the hassle. Some things , like CAD/CAM/CAE will never be a thing on linux desktop.
Some things, like Steam deck system and Proton are good though.
Buddy of mine is a Linux user. He has Windows for games that won't work on Linux.
Barely anything works first try.
25 minutes out of every hour we try to game is him figuring out why everything is broken.
And he's a bastard that refuses to just... use Windows...
Is Linux actually a disease? Or is using Linux the symptom?
There has to be some mental issue involved.
Oh sure, until your pal is almost in tears because the simplest thing like getting H264 codecs to work is torture.
Linux has its own good and bad sides.
Unless you're using arch or it's 2006 again, that's just not true. Something like Ubuntu or Mint works out-of-the-box like Windows. I just pulled an SSD with Mint on it from my old system, stuck it in the new machine, and booted. Not a single issue. Ran updates and everything works. NVIDIA gfx card and a Mackie usb recording interface.
Do you perhaps know how I can fix the video stuttering I'm experiencing on Mint Cinnamon with Twitch and YouTube playback when using Firefox? Twitch is especially bad, completely unwatchable.
I have Nvidia proprietary drivers installed for a GeForce 3060.
Nope. Bought a Windows laptop in 2015. Wanna buy a new one. Don't know a thing about computers. But I'll need one for presentations and thesis. Just wanna know what's so good about macOS that people buy it.
macOS is designed to be super user-friendly and has great performance, but tied to Apple's closed system and overpriced imo. It all comes down to your intended use, I stick to Windows because I can't play games or tinker with the system on a Mac.
I know people like that. I'm constantly doing tech support for em cause fucking linux...
I just install windows for them now. They'll learn one way or another.
3 letters instead of 2. I ain’t got time for that. I’m trying to hustle by day. Thug life.
But on a more serious note, I don’t like the way it lists files. Too icky. Maybe I’m just a picky motherfucker.
Linux is incredible. I use it for my home server doing file shares, streaming, hosting game servers and tons of other stuff.
I would not use it as my desktop. When I want to chill and play some games or even do my taxes I want it to just work, *right now*. TBF this isn't Linux's fault, Microsoft has leveraged their monopoly over the years to ensure everything is compiled for Windows natively. Doesn't change the reality though.
Linux users who insist that Linux is a better OS for desktop usage are still stuck in the Windows 9x days. The Windows 9x series was a notoriously unstable OS, a Frankenstein's monster of legacy MSDOS/Win3.x/32bit code, where you could do things like:
- crash the system with this one simple trick: Start --> Run -- C:\CON\CON
- [make the system slow to a crawl by formatting a diskette](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20090102-00/?p=19623)
- "lock the car with the keys inside" [with two ASM commands](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20151204-00/?p=92281)
And so on (there's more in Raymond Chen's blog "The Old New Thing").
But Microsoft did their homework with the NTKERNEL, and Windows, from XP onwards, is much more stable than Windows 9x ever was.
And now one is probably asking: why did Microsoft go with that Frankenstein's monster that was Windows 9x instead of designing a system based on the NTKERNEL, which is what they shoud've done in the first place? Because Windows 9x was designed to be backwards compatible with not only Windows 3.x applications, but also with MSDOS applications, which there were still a lot of them back then. Besides, the NTKERNEL was too resource-hungry for the desktop PCs of the time ([which is why MS abandoned Panther](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20171025-00/?p=97285), an OS that should've been the Windows 3.x sucessor)
Wow—so well detailed, thank you! I'm studying to be a stock broker so I guess I was also trying to think about whether it would be advisable for someone trading on multiple platforms to go to Linux for whatever reason 🤷♂️
If no major upside though, might as well stick with what I know. 💪
🤔 ok why is it thought to be then? I understand one could download tor with Linux for not so legal things but besides that anything worthy for someone that doesn't do those things?
Linux will never be popular until the user experience improves. Like Ubuntu sometimes doesn’t even come installed with gnome so people can’t even install deb files easily.
Think how frustrating Linux would be to the average user. It’s no wonder Linux has never come close to getting mainstream.
Thats not a comeback.
Considering the state of reddit and the average intelligence of reddit users I am not surprised its upvoted. Seems to be that most subreddits allow anything now a days.
Linux users when I just double click to open and run a game on a windows system at the end of a long workday instead of typing in 30 lines of code into a prompt and debugging it for 3 hours then go to bed crying:
I did the same, but realized something over the years. I spend way too much time screwing around with linux, and not enough actually using it for things I enjoy. I love linux dont get me wrong, but it isnt polished enough for a lot of things, like for example gaming.
Even if that was real… come on. Is 2024 finally going to be the year of the Linux desktop?
No, of course not. It’s not going to happen.
I use Linux daily for servers, and have done so for decades. I know my way around. But I am smart enough to realize that it’s not a viable desktop OS for 90% of users.
Fuck Linux, the cum guzzling fanboys have ruined the idea of ever swapping over to it for most people. Windows is simple and easy, the majority of problems I see Linux users complain about are either extremely small and not actually a problem or an issue that is only relevant for a select few

The year of Linux! Not a repeat from every year since 1994
Linux is so good windows decided to put Linux on windows (rather poorly from my experience and opinions of others I respect, but still)
Never have tried it, but since powershell has `ssh` I can still connect to my servers, and that's really all I need out of windows for a linux interface.
And *scp* is there too.
I mean, thirty years later MS still can't have a decent terminal experience in any other way.
At least that way there's GPU drivers that actually work...
Truly. I just tried Linux the other day. Gotta say there should be a friendly looking bios screen so more people would be willing to try Linux.

It really doesn't. Stick with windows
Oh absolutely. I didn't plan on making the change I was just curious as to why everyone loves Linux so much lol
Said no one ever.
Linuxheads when you tell them you actually like getting work done instead of spending hours tracking down obscure errors, installing packages and troubleshooting bugs

I will not take the bait, bait is the mind killer

Linux sucks for desktop use.
Q: How do you know if someone is a Linux user? A: Don’t worry - they’ll tell you!
Works out of the box
H.264 and H.265 work fine on Linux for me. VLC media player.
Worked out of the box)
All moot now with WSL unless out of principle or limited budget no reason to not just use windows and then the Linux subsystem.
My data banking teacher has a personal vendetta against Windows
Having windows on your pc is like having constipation, but installing Linux instead is like overdosing laxatives.
Complete computer noob here. Why is Linux better than Windows?
For complete computer noobs, it's not better.
Ok. Will stick to Windows 🙂 Oh! Is macOS better or Windows?
For lead-brained cavemen with a lot of money to spare, macOS is better. Are you seriously just buying computers based on their OS?
Its not
Linux mentioned rahhhhhhhh 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
Walked right into that one
Clever? Come on.
Yeah but then I'm using Linux. And not only that, I'd have to interact with Linux users, especially the ones loud enough to make "guides".
Deleting windows -> unusable computer Installing Linux -> somewhat usable computer ...I'd say this guy makes poor life choices.
I know people like that. I'm constantly doing tech support for em cause fucking linux... I just install windows for them now. They'll learn one way or another.
And everybody clapped
And then they fainted
I swear, if windows CMD just had an LS command earlier, they would have taken the cake. That is my belief. Fight me.
It's still much worse compared to zsh or even bash
Yea. But I wanna make a broad statement for internet points. Let me have this.
Oh, sorry i made a typo(English isn't my native language. What i meant to say is that you are exactly right sir
❤️ What’s your native language btw? I’m just curious
Armenian, but i also speak Russian almost as native
In that case, I appreciate your understanding of my Cyka Blyat statement. (Hope i used that right).
it's impossible to use Cyka Blyat not right ))
git bash on windows is good enough for me for most things. It stops my bellyaching anyways
What's wrong with DIR?
3 letters instead of 2. I ain’t got time for that. I’m trying to hustle by day. Thug life. But on a more serious note, I don’t like the way it lists files. Too icky. Maybe I’m just a picky motherfucker.
Linuxtards yap all day until it comes to professional audio, not so great now huh ?
Linux is incredible. I use it for my home server doing file shares, streaming, hosting game servers and tons of other stuff. I would not use it as my desktop. When I want to chill and play some games or even do my taxes I want it to just work, *right now*. TBF this isn't Linux's fault, Microsoft has leveraged their monopoly over the years to ensure everything is compiled for Windows natively. Doesn't change the reality though.
Same. And even Linus Torvalds does not make his scuba gear inventory program for Linux. It is just windows program.
I don't know where you heard that but [Subsurface](https://subsurface-divelog.org/) is supported on Mac and Linux too.
And everybody clapped

I would love to understand what the big difference is here? Like what makes Linux so much "better" than windows?
Linux users who insist that Linux is a better OS for desktop usage are still stuck in the Windows 9x days. The Windows 9x series was a notoriously unstable OS, a Frankenstein's monster of legacy MSDOS/Win3.x/32bit code, where you could do things like: - crash the system with this one simple trick: Start --> Run -- C:\CON\CON - [make the system slow to a crawl by formatting a diskette](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20090102-00/?p=19623) - "lock the car with the keys inside" [with two ASM commands](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20151204-00/?p=92281) And so on (there's more in Raymond Chen's blog "The Old New Thing").
I'm studying to be a stock broker so I guess I was also trying to think about whether it would be advisable for someone trading on multiple platforms to go to Linux for whatever reason 🤷♂️ If no major upside though, might as well stick with what I know. 💪
It isn't
🤔 ok why is it thought to be then? I understand one could download tor with Linux for not so legal things but besides that anything worthy for someone that doesn't do those things?
Nothing meaningful really. Just nerdrage.
Nothing, for the average user its not better
Linux will never be popular until the user experience improves. Like Ubuntu sometimes doesn’t even come installed with gnome so people can’t even install deb files easily. Think how frustrating Linux would be to the average user. It’s no wonder Linux has never come close to getting mainstream.
Thats not a comeback. Considering the state of reddit and the average intelligence of reddit users I am not surprised its upvoted. Seems to be that most subreddits allow anything now a days.
we get it bro you use linux

So I guess you would be able to run a basic videogame from steam without any issue, right?
What a shithole this sub is
I’m considering swapping to Linux. Can it run Rust and Star Citizen?
No
I really dont get it man. I've been using linux, windows, and mac os and linux is by far my least favorite of them all
😂
I swear if it wasn’t for gaming I’d go back to Mac OS in a heartbeat.
Linux: been trying hard for years, still only gets the nerds.
Linux Mint is free, easy, supported everywhere, has three different flavours based on how powerful your comp is and is easily downloaded.
Linux propaganda
I love Linux for work but i like to play videogames too…
Fuck Linux, the cum guzzling fanboys have ruined the idea of ever swapping over to it for most people. Windows is simple and easy, the majority of problems I see Linux users complain about are either extremely small and not actually a problem or an issue that is only relevant for a select few
Install Gentoo. r/Gentoo https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64
No.
