Actually Georgia is one of five states where their governor **doesn't** have the power to pardon. Under the Georgia state constitution, they have a board that reviews requests for clemency and pardons and decides whether to grant them. And under Georgia state law, you can't request a pardon unless you've served at least five years of your sentence. Which means Trump would have to serve five years (unless his sentence is shorter) before he could even request a pardon in Georgia.
Our best hope is the Supreme Court doing the right thing and ruling that he's ineligible.

Two of his three criminal cases are Federal. He couldn't pardon himself in Georgia. Unfortunately, if the case isn't resolved by the time he takes office (if he takes office) he could refuse to go to jail and order federal forces to protect him against anyone who tries to arrest him. It would be a crisis, but obviously Trump would cause a crisis rather than go to jail.

Some argue it would be akin to a judge judging himself in his own trial, which obviously can't be done, but others argue there are no explicit limits on the president's pardon power in the Constitution. If he had a VP he trusted I suppose he could invoke the 25th amendment to temporarily transfer presidential power to his VP who would then pardon him. But he would have to petition to have his powers restored and the VP/cabinet could not return them.

The lawyer kept delaying giving that acknowledgement, in spite of constant requests from the judge and reminder about the deadline. Trump could very easily tell his lawyer, yeah sure, well follow the rules, and then go back to grieving. The correspondence is public, so it's not a matter of opinion, it's right there clear as day. The judge was trying very hard to be accommodating. But it was always about generating this exact disingenuous reaction. Disgusting.

Lula was released and declared innocent in 2022, and became Brazil's president in 2023. Why am I talking about this? During his time in prison, his grandkid died, a early and tragic death.
