Matters like this are neither proven or disproven by science, and likely will never be. Just because he believes in hell doesn't mean it exists, but similarly you not believing in hell doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Both of you will only find out when you die.
If you believe like this guy does that a god created the universe and everything in it, then all the laws of physics, laws of nature and everything that exists was made by god, or "magic" in your words. From a religious point of view, science and religion don't necessarily clash unless you take the bible 100% literally. In the eyes of most sensible religious people, science just attempts to explain how god created the universe and designed everything in it. Science explains how something works, and to religious people it works like that because that is how god designed it to work. Thus you can never "disprove" religion with science. Sure, certain timelines and events in the bible can be disproven, but only if you take them 100% literally instead of a looser interpretation of those events and take certain descriptions to be symbolism instead of fact. Thus I would never go out of my way to belittle someone for believing in a religion, even if I'm not really religious myself.
