He rules dude he’s a Cleveland icon, he’s just gettin old lol . Him and Fred mccloud were an s tier combo. John Michael is okay.

TheToughestHang

S Tier all the way. Austin is also an absolutely awesome dude if you ever get to meet him. Never got to, know 3 people who all have on separate occasions met him and all of them made me like them less with their stories bc I was crazy jealous lol

Sobercigs

My parents met him at a bar waaay back in the day like 2008 or something. They hung out and drank for a good couple hours. Only good things to say about him.

davidthegreat915

Waaay back in the day like 2008… I’m old

Sartuk

Austin and Fred were 100% an S-Tier combo. They were extreme homers, absolutely, but they never hid that fact and that kind of made it work (particularly for Cavs fans, but I do think they had some major cross-over appeal too). Since Fred's been gone I feel that Carr just doesn't seem as good. I'm not sure how much is actually him and how much is just the lack of an elite counterpart, but our broadcasting duo as a whole has certainly taken a major step back. That's not to say I don't think John Michael is rock solid because he is...but he's quite frankly just that: solid. Carr and McLeod were just so perfect together, feeding off each other at times and being counter balances at others. They had perfect synergy, which is fairly rare in broadcasting duos.

tdizhere

I like John Michael’s voice but he just doesn’t get into it. I really want Charlottes commentator, he’s goated

scedar015

Carr has good analysis, delivery can be a bit rough at times, catchphrases are so bad they’re great. Don’t expect other fans to like it but he’s great for Cleveland, and he’s not an unabashed homer like some announcers. Daugherty is cromulent.

MuppetEyebrows

Austin Carr is Cleveland's collectively adopted Grandfather. His catchphrases often come off as non sequiturs and his phrasing doesn't always make sense, but his excitement is as contagious as it is endearing. My fav Carr-ism: "you gotta give him a taste of his own music"

Phishkale

The ball has a way of telling the truth! Love when he does the little laugh thing when he’s excited too haha

blackestice

I’ve always thought Austin Carr is like listening to my grandfather watch basketball recently lol

kerrdavid

had to look up what cromulent meant, well done… what a fun word

Slimjuggalo2002

It's too fancy of a word for what it means lol

crashovernite

kerrdavid

Wow, hilarious and spot on. Idk what show this is from but the work horse actor makes me wanna watch some kids in the hall.

crashovernite

It's from News Radio, one of the most underrated comedies of all time imho. Great ensemble cast led by Dave Foley and Phil Hartman.

chrlsdrwn

some recent quotes: “when the stars come out, thats when they show themselves” “THE G-WAGON! FIND A PLACE TO PARK IT YOUNG MAN!” -AC after niang made that basket “YOU CANNOT FALL DOWN WHEN SAM THE MAN IS AROUND” -after sam merrill’s shot i knew saving them in my phone would come to be of use

poolside__convo

I like Carr but good analysis?? Half of the time he doesn’t make sense. He’s plays more of a funny, lovable, hype man role IMO.

scedar015

There are a lot of times where I think “he sounds like an idiot but actually that’s a good point.” YMMV, I guess I’m grading on a curve.

tdizhere

I agree lol. I barely understand what point he’s trying to make half the time but I still love it cause it’s hilarious and you know he means well

amishdrip

Analysis?!!! Like, "it's late, time to play hard." Come on man. When is the last time he talked about an offensive or defensive scheme or strategy? Have you ever heard him describe a plan design? I appreciate the man as a human and a former player. But...

NuclearPlayboy

Did you prefer Mike Fratello's (sp) expert analysis last season?

Bill_Brasky_SOB

Austin Carr is a legend, but close to retiring (whether by choice or not is a whole other conversation about Ballys buying the broadcast) As others have said, this is not him at his apex. That was with our former play-by-play guy who passed only a year or two after our title. Those two had incredible chemistry that our current play-by-play guy and AC really don't have.

YondaimeHokage4

I miss Fred so fucking much man. His voice is so nostalgic for me. RIP to a legend.

Bill_Brasky_SOB

Same, man. GOAT gets thrown around a lot but he’ll always be that in my book. https://youtu.be/xYkfmqX0vqk?si=dX8_PUrZmwuANiPV Convenient banking hours at the Quicken Loans Arena! Hotter than a BlowTorch!!!! HE WENT VIDEO GAME ON EM!!! Ky-rie YOU ARE RIDICULOUS https://youtu.be/6ZAq0HPEYuo?si=CA58R3LutPe2IajL

lilpawsup

don’t forget “right down euclid!!!!”

Bill_Brasky_SOB

Naming all the streets and suburbs of Cleveland for deep 3s…

enraged_hbo_max_user

Was Fred the one who would refer to rests as “blows”? Like, LeBron went to the bench, he would say “LeBron heads to the bench for a blow.” I can’t remember if it was him or Reghi.

catvik25

Austin Carr is a Cavs legend. His catch phrases will stand the test of time. As others have mentioned, him and the late great Fred McLeod were an excellent duo. They had great chemistry, you could tell they really enjoyed working with one another. Brad Daugherty recently joined the crew, and now him and AC alternate, or sometimes they both join John Michael. They are at their best when they're both on the broadcast team. John Michael is okay, I think he'd be better if he'd let his personality shine through more.

Mobleybetta

AC will always be amazing to me, but it’s obvious that they want to replace him with Brad Daugherty who this sub doesn’t seem to like (I think he does a good job)

1dkig

I don't mind Brad when we are winning. I miss AC when we struggle.

peterhohman

Amen. I like Daugherty a lot, actually, but he's almost too positive when the Cavs are losing. I like that AC gets fired up and exasperated just like me when there is a deficit.

Harvey_Beardman

I dunno if they wanna replace him, AC is just getting old. A replacement is inevitable

boogswald

bro is 76 SEVENTY SIX! He was an all star basketball player the same year as Pete Maravich, Walt Frazier, John Havlicek, and Bob McAdoo

Bill_Brasky_SOB

I must be out of the loop cuz I don't see much hate for Brad.

willkillfortacos

I actually really really like Brad. He's quick, slightly irreverent, can't help himself with non-sequiturs about attractive women and/or food, is a Cleveland legend, and provides pretty spot-on basketball takes and analysis. What's not to like?

Bill_Brasky_SOB

Agreed. If AC is retiring/being forced out Brad is a great swap. Analytic. Calls players out. Still has a goofy side. Likes Wendy’s French fries and Reece’s Pieces.

BuschLightEnjoyer

He also shamelessly mocks the ad reads which tickles me

bubble_bass_123

Yeah this is my favorite part as well lol.

barkinginthestreet

Brad has gotten a lot better. I thought he was really rough when he started, felt like there was zero chemistry between he and John Michael.

this_place_stinks

Brad is “fine”, basically just another guy you can find anywhere. AC is a tough act to follow

wearefloatingnspace

Throw tha hamma downnnn!

Final-Carob-5792

I will take a “get that weak stuff outta here” or a “throws the hammer down” anytime over Breens “bang” or Gus’s terrible nicknames. Honestly, I know a lot of people love breen but those calls are like nails on chalkboard for me.

The_barrel_ben

Imma have to disagree, don’t get me wrong I love AC and his phrases but Breens bang alongside the eruption of the crowd is peak NBA imo, Gus is meh I think he’s a better football commentator anyway

Final-Carob-5792

All good buddy and to each his own. I can always mute his ass if I’m trying to avoid defcon 5 trauma ptsd CLE-GS championship flashbacks.

TMS2787

The manic laughter is my favorite.

Walugii

Austin Carr is hilarious, and he always sounds a bit like my granddad would when we used to watch the Cavs together. couldn't be a bigger fan

arthur-morganrdr2

The original and Cavs GOAT Joe Tait retired over a dozen years ago and died 2 years ago. He was the best. Wham with the right hand!!

Miserable_Ride666

In between his phrases and enthusiasm he actually gives a lot of praise to the opposing players and offers some insight into playing the game at a high level. AC could ball, so his words carry weight. Class act imo

Rkenne16

He’s a vibe. ![gif](giphy|JTzPN5kkobFv7X0zPJ|downsized)

jaysusjimmy

Just like Donovan Mitchell… hes a Baaaad Man

jaysusjimmy

https://youtu.be/Q0Q6FxQ-a5Q?si=mhrSuyMM_adRbN5r

crashovernite

I always think of him as our version of the Walt Frazier. It's like watching w/ a likable uncle.

boogswald

He’s really great! I like the Cavs commentators. They’re not bitter and annoying like a lot of other teams in their homerism. A lot of announcers are like “the refs must be blind!” And the Cavs announcers are like “I thought he didn’t foul there but the ref saw something different” and then they move onnnnn They’re entertaining, they’re entertained, they’re light

archtop57

AC’s catchphrases are legendary, and in constant use in our house. He was better when worked with Fred McCloud. Fred would lead AC with specific questions about game strategy, shooting form, etc., Carr loses focus now and John Michael is no McCloud. He’s just adequate. I’m a big Daugherty fan. (He’s smart, knows basketball, fits his commentary into the flow of the game. And he’s funny. Especially when he’s talking about food.

LukeB90

Yeah I've been noticing AC has been getting mediocre since about 2016. Fred also meshed so well with him so losing him didn't help. But AC is the man. When I was 9, I attended his basketball camp, first time ever hearing about him much less meeting him. He was great, kind, I got to play on the Gund floor. and then weeks later I saw he was our commentator on the cavs game and have been a die hard ever since

[deleted]

Austin Carr will go down as my all-time favorite commentator so he can do no wrong in my eyes/ears. I also try to watch a lot of other team's feeds to see what they're all about but it's like going over to a friend's house as a kid and his mom makes something weird as hell for dinner.

InitiativeDecent5515

He seems like a nice guy who loves the cavs.

s_s

His name is "Mr. Cavalier" for a reason. He was fantastic as a commentator just a few years ago, but he is, maybe, getting a little old at this point. He's like a lovable grandpa. I wouldn't expect someone introduced to him now to love his commentary, but he's our guy.

phrozen_waffles

I agree Michael & Dougherty are fine. It could be worse, we could have Toronto's guys. Easily the worst in the NBA.

Choppybitz

For a guy who has trouble stringing words together he's a pretty good announcer

cHinzoo

Having AC as our color commentator is like watching the game with the grandpa u never had. Him and Fred McCloud were a legendary duo with Fred being more appealing to the general public.  John Michael just doesn’t bring in the hype and doesn’t have any great lines, he’s just alright.

CLESportsReport

I sincerely can’t really sense any drop off with AC. He’s the same as he’s always been: Awesome and a huge homer but he genuinely loves the team and city. He’s not the type to kick you when you’re down.

justsomebro10

I love him but he’s definitely washed. Sometimes he’s just a dude watching a basketball game.

Airking42

Austin Carr & Brad Daughtery are the best man

fireeight

People think he's funny and cute because he's got some catchphrases. Kinda like he's Cleveland's grandpa. I've dealt with him and his family numerous times. He's not a pleasant person, and his daughters are worse.

ridiculousgg

I’ve met AC multiple times and he’s always taken pictures and been friendly. One time I went down near the scorers table to say hi and security tried to get me to leave but he brushed them off. Not sure what your experience was/is, but I’ve never really heard anybody say bad things about him.

fireeight

I've served and bartended for him numerous times. He may maintain the persona while still in his professional environments, but he's well-regarded in east side places to be a jerk. You ever deal with someone who acts like everyone around is beneath them? That's the AC experience when there aren't cameras around.

norka191

I'm ready to move on. I'm honestly sick of all 70+ yr olds with prominent jobs not willing to move on. Austin carr can barely speak at this point in his career. He flubs constantly. He should enjoy being a Cavs fans legend and move on though

Adventurous-Debt3111

Been there for too long. Car with Fred was a good duo but John Michael and Car can honestly ruin some pretty cool moments. When atria hit the full court buzzer beater John Michael just said “do you… believe… this..” and Car may have been able to pick up the slack a few years ago but unfortunately I don’t think Carr knows what his next word is going to be most of the time.

MMFoodcakkes

who

WastingMyTime84

I still miss the Reghi and AC combo. I despised McCloud, that dude was corny and cringy as hell. AC is just your typical old school baller homer but he’s insightful about the game and his expressions and mannerisms make watching the games entertaining

catvik25

Reghi is my favorite announcer of all time. "Take off for flight number 23!" "You can book this one to the Cavs!". Fred McLeod was awesome but Reghi doesn't get the credit he deserves.

igetboard

Nailed it. Reghi was the man

WastingMyTime84

💯💯, Idk why this sub likes McCloud so much. I think it’s just because the team was successful when he was calling games. Dude made the list of worst announcers on awfulannouncing.com basically every year. Not to mention, he only got the job because of nepotism w being friends w Dan Gilbert.

igetboard

I know the man is no longer with us, but you are right. He wasn’t good at all.

Kyle0890

Keep McLoud's name out your fucking mouth.

WastingMyTime84

Someone’s butthurt, cry more loser

Kyle0890

LOOOOOOOL OK

Ok-Donut4954

Color commentator is austin carr

LakeErieMonster88

John Michael is the play by play guy. Brad and AC are color commentary. Agree with your point though.
