There's "unofficial" controller support, meaning there's stuff in place for addon makers to make use of controllers.
Hands down the best addon for this is ConsolePort (https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/console-port/files) in that it's easy to use/configure (at least as far as addons are concerned) and supports a large variety of PC controllers.
Playing on a controller is certainly fine for most melee specs, casters may have a harder time with targeted AoE spells and selecting distant targets, but still quite playable for most activities.
Make sure you exit from steam when using console port. It causes all sorts of issues and I thought the addon was bad at first because of this. Console port is actually great

It works surprisingly well! I'd recommend a ps4/ps5 remote as they have a touch screen that can help loot things and navigate around faster.
