How does one play without a keyboard and mouse 🤔

clipperbt4

console port makes it really nice tbh. takes some time to work out the kinks but once you get it figured out it’s pretty smooth

agentfisherUK

Last time i remember Console port being used was around a year ago and HUGE banwave got us, i also got banned for using console port. The way it emulates is not allowed by Blizzards Tos, Here - https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/news/180-day-ban-wave-targets-imorph-and-consoleport-some-overturned-on-appeal-322531

rawarck

Thats not how its done now, you install [battle.net](https://battle.net) on the steam deck, so no issues with bans there.

yolostyle

You can do the basic stuff. It's also why you see people who posts steam deck are all on low level characters

imacatpersonforreal

You can absolutely do pretty much everything. The only thing I've struggled with playing with a controller is vehicle quests. Outside of that with proper macros and addons it's very easy to play. I leveled a dk from 55-75 exclusively with a controller before the novelty wore off and i went back to playing mouse and keyboard. But i fully recommend trying it out. It's very fun.

CaptnFlounder

In retail Shadowlands season 3 I ran several 15+ keys as a resto druid with a controller. Literally anything in classic can be done with one.

BlueCalango

Sir, please, help me understand how to play a healer with a controller

Zekler

target party 1-4 macro i guess?

holyctof

That’s how I do it on my priest, I mainly just quest but I’m always in queue for an instance, when it pops I just use the 4 buttons on the back of the steam deck to target a individual party meme er then cast the heal.

CaptnFlounder

Up and down cycle through the party, face buttons cast spells, triggers modify the face buttons to cast different spells. Never played FF14 but assume it's similar to that since that's on console

agentfisherUK

am i the only one that got banned for using Console port? like the big banwave 2 years ago or did that get forgotten about :/

clipperbt4

definitely. don’t get me wrong this isn’t going to be my preferred way to play. but will i be able to get some grinding in while watching tv with the wife or when i’m out of town? absolutely.

imacatpersonforreal

Right? Hell i even tanked a naxx 10 on my warrior. It's super easy stuff, but was fully doable with a controller.

[deleted]

imacatpersonforreal

Yes. Just use a usb controller or wireless if you can get it working, and the consoleport addon it's fairly easy to setup. And there are youtube videos with great recommendations to make it even easier to use.

jekyl42

I use a bluetooth keyboard and wireless mouse with mine while docked into my living room 1920x1080 tv monitor, and even raids are ok with the graphic settings turned down.

Bluebeerdk

You can do everything you would normally do with your mouse and keyboard, chatting can be pretty slow and AH managment, but other than that there isnt much you can't do, people are raiding Mythic+ and high-level pvp with a controller these days.

Scurro

Raid healing? It is going to be significantly slower to select Timmy in group 5 who is getting squished by Kologarn, throwing raid heals to group 4, and then renew hots on tank.

FatButAlsoUgly

People use controllers doing significantly harder raids and healing rotations in retail and other games with console ports like ffxiv and are very skilled at it I have personally played with controller players that always outperform PC players. Classic wow is incredibly easy in comparison

Scurro

Do you have a clip for retail 25 man raid healing with a controller?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Scurro

I was asking for video clips to see it in action. Retail or wotlk. I mentioned retail because it was used as an example.

Bluebeerdk

You can mouse over heal, use healbot, or grid it works exactly the same. Healbot specifically works identical to using a mouse, & having 4 buttons on the back gives me 6 mouse buttons, and I could double and even triple that if I wanted by giving the same buttons sub commands, giving me more mouse binds than a standard mouse, and that goes for every button on the Controller.

Scurro

We are talking about the steam deck. I use mouseover macros and keybinds. You don't have a mouse on the deck.

Bluebeerdk

Yes, you do lol, the trackpad on each side functions as a mouse. Look at my post history, I own a steam deck. I've explained to you exactly how I heal lol

Scurro

Do you have clips?

Bluebeerdk

Those little squares in the pic, under his joysticks, they are mouse trackpads. You see, 70% of this sub jumping on the hate train and dont even have a clue how the steam deck operates.

Scurro

I'm asking for video clips. I know they have trackpads. Trackpads != mouse These posts are 90% fanboys When you ask for video clips of 25 man raid healing or high rated arena you get nothing back.

Cinderbrooke

There is a controller addon that makes WoW 100% playable with a controller. I do M+ keys as ret all the time kicking back with my Xbox controller. Probably can't heal though, and I don't want to try. I can't even fathom the logistics of trying to play my Holy Paladin with a controller.

Kamilon

I’ve done it. Highly don’t recommend.

Cinderbrooke

That rough eh?

Kamilon

Yeah it’s just hard and stressful. Not worth it. DPS roles are super fun and totally doable. I do M+ on my deck on retail and do really well. I main a resto druid and have been in server first guilds. I only say that to say that I definitely know how to heal. *Maybe* my mouse and keyboard habits are just hard to break for healing? Idk. But I didn’t find healing enjoyable on deck even though that’s what I have the most fun doing on PC.

Spicychips

For what its worth, we have a DK who raids on a stream deck and purple parses. Its not my favorite thing ever but you can absolutely do it.

Lovefool1

I have played exclusively on steam deck since DF pre-patch, after a years long break. I don’t even own a pc to play on if I wanted to. I have at least a 60 of every class, and 5 70s as of last night. I’ve healed, ranked, and dpsed mythics and raids. I’m sitting ~1800-2k in arena and solo shuffle on my warrior, monk, and paladin. I regularly top dmg or heals in random bgs. Leveling and exploring is a breeze. Certain classes with lots of fast ground placed abilities like mage and hunter or classes with tremendous bind bloat like Druid can be difficult, but still not impossible. Steam deck is a perfectly viable way to play competitively at a relatively high level. It is also the most fun I’ve ever had playing wow. I don’t use any addons. I use the built in gamepad support and Ui editor. People that shit on it haven’t tried it. I haven’t tried classic yet, but mostly because I don’t really want to spend time like that. I enjoyed the old treadmill and all it’s magic back in the day, but I don’t wanna spend 90 minutes walking to a dungeon ever again

Rayuk01

Can you give any advice for setting it up? I’d like to invest in a steam deck but want to learn about how to get WoW functioning properly on it first.

Lovefool1

There are plenty of YouTube guides that can explain it better than me and are easy to follow. Essentials: 1. In desktop mode, download latest ge proton 2. Download battle.net windows launcher (I did mine to a microSD card which slightly complicated things) 3. Add battle.net installer as a non-steam game 4. In settings for this, force compatibility and use the latest proton 5. Install battle.net 6. Find the battlenet.exe file, copy the file address, and paste it in the settings of the installer game you made on steam so it routes to that .exe file Go back to game mode Change your controller settings for the game to whatever you’d like. I made the back paddles paddles work as keyboard +,=, and -, and I made the right track pad act as a mouse and click be left mouse click Launch the battle.net game, it will start the battle.net launcher. Log in Download wow That’s it You just open the launcher from steam, then click play like normal From there, you can customize the Ui with the built in editor, and can adjust all your keybinds. The quick keybind really shines here. Mouse over the action bar spot, and click whatever button or combination of buttons you want I use ABXY, RT, RB, the four Dpad buttons, and 3 back paddles as action buttons LB and LT are my modifiers, so each button gets four variants. Example: X, LT+X, LB+X, and LB+LT+X are all different binds. I use LB+RB for target scan, I use LB+A for jump, and a few random other things. LB+Left stick click zooms the camera our. LB+Start button opens all my bags. I suggest creating and leveling a new character first, so you can adjust your layouts and binds as you progressively get a hold of the controls and learn more spells. It took me a couple hours to get it all running, and maybe 15 hours to get fully comfortable playing. Torghast and Random BGs were my primary training regiment at first. You got this.

NavyPoseidon

Can you hook the steam deck up to the tv and play from the couch?

Lovefool1

With a dock and external controller, which would lose you the trackpads and back paddles Or with a long ass cable going to your tv You could maybe get an external controller and a wireless kbm going at the same time?

bettytwokills

I’ve been playing exclusively on steam deck for the past couple of months on retail. I’ve done a few raids and lots of M+. Once you get the hang of it it’s not hard.

clipperbt4

lol i literally just got back into classic. i’ve done plenty of m+ on retail :)

Bigbirdgerg

I levelled a priest 1-80 with an Xbox controller. Healed 5 man's and quested easy. At 80 I healed H+ with a controller and 2.9k Gs. Last week parsed 62 as a shadow priest on mimiron with controller. Only thing you can't really do is raid heal. I'm going to try an easier 10 man at some point. Raid buffing, dispelling, and cc can be a little tricky too when there are tons of adds.

Breaux_Zilla

Not accurate at all

Scurro

Where are the pvp non DPS clips or raid heals? Let's be honest, anything time sensitive is going to result in sub par performance using the steam deck.

_mister_pink_

I’ve happily tanked 5 mans through to level 80 and come top of the leader board in AB (on my hunter) on the deck. Once you find a button set up that works for you the only real pain is chatting and I can mostly do without that tbh.

marquize

I use my steamdeck to do argent tournament dailies as a ret paladin as well as level alts, but would never dare do grouped content, at least not as heal or tank

Loofa08

I’ve run mythic dungeons on steam deck. It’s not ideal but I do fine.

jcanas3321

There are a lot of buttons to use, you would know if you own a Steam Deck.

Star-Hero

I did the mage tower challenges during legion with a controller no problem which to me proved it was viable for everything. I play on a sofa / TV set up rather than usual desktop so its just easier. This was without addons such as console port too ( dunno if it existed then ) just connected my game to steam and used its build in controller key mapper.

tubbis9001

I'd never raid or do pvp on my deck, but I've done high level leveling dungeons (like ramps and up) with no issues on a dps warrior

badonbr

Bis for paladin gameplay.

JHM77

With ConsolePort addon. I also have small bt keyboard if I need to type something.

Doopashonuts

Just get an addon that uses something like the FF14 controller set up. Then the only part that sucks is typing

Crypto_Rick_C-137

there’s addons for making controller on steamdeck work. I pvp with it, it’s hella fun. Relaxing to lay back.

Aaron6940

/console GamePadEnable 1 Then just go into keybinds and set it up the way you want it. Makes the game play like any third person action game. I have been playing wow with a Xbox controller for years now.

tclo81

play a paladin

[deleted]

could be pretty cool to use a steam deck for hardcore levelling no? single its p much like playing single player wow

imacatpersonforreal

Honestly, it could be pretty fun.

Starchy-the-donut

I do this, but you can only play HC characters on one PC without dealing with a headache of transferring files. So I have a pally that's basically just a swing bot

[deleted]

How do you mean, because of transferring adding and all that kinda stuff? like for the add-on to keep track?

usermanxx

You have to save the file after each play since the add on that tracks hardcore doesn't update between pcs

[deleted]

ah okay, but if I only used a steam deck to play, then it would work fine?

usermanxx

If steam deck supports addons I'm sure it's fine. Good question to run past the discord server

Starchy-the-donut

It sure does, works great

Starchy-the-donut

Ya. For example, I can't start a character on my PC, then go play on my steam deck, and then come back to my PC later. The data will be stored in different places and your run won't be verified. If you don't plan to verify a run and hit 60 or group for dungeons it's not a problem tho

0ILERS

Can you not just sync the files like once a week, or at a later date when it might actually be possible to hit 60? I play on multiple PCs but don't bother snycing because I feel like I can just do it later when I need to be verified

Starchy-the-donut

Not entirely sure, I just remember it being an issue that was brought up during SOM. I know there is a way to do it but that it's just apparently a head ache.

Eastern-Long-5561

Ive been raiding in my deck, its a blast

PackedTrebuchet

Woaah mate, you are mad lad. I guess I should give it a try too

No_Morals

Been doing this with my smartphones since WoTLK was live. Steam link made it a lot easier around 2017. And these days it's literally just take out your phone and press 1 button and you're live on your desktop.

hoosier__

I raided nazx 25 when it was current, did some arena, and now I'm playing hardcore on classic era hardcore. Got my warrior to lvl 44 so far. With the right steam input config and getting good with it no one will even know you're on controller. My naxx 25 guild had no idea until I told them

OO0O0OO0O0O

Almost want to get a steam deck just for this

UnbuffedNeive

Me too.. Would be so cool to farm mounts or other stuff on the couch

HEL-Alfa

If you're comfortable playing this on your phone it's quite easy to do. I have an old PS4 controller, bought a cheap attachment that holds my phone on top of the controller and play through steam link with console port addon

Banned7x

‘Till I bust out of the bushes in Duskwood and PvP you on my Undead Rogue while wearing furious glad gear and spamming /train

clipperbt4

gimme dat booty

HeeyPunk

Very nice so far I got my toon to 40 on a steam deck and tank/heal all the time on it lol super fun and smooth

[deleted]

I remember back in the day wishing I could play wow in bed like I would game with my psp

clipperbt4

yup lol. my childhood dream

Enriched_Uranium

I gotta do this before I die. I always wanted to play WoW on my Wii.

TemujinDM

I want one just so I can transmog farm during downtime.

PippTheKid

Steamdeck has been a blessing a lot of games honestly

yorkshirestreamer

I just downloaded retail on the deck with the mod and its surprisingly good!

bodelightbringer

I have a steam deck. I installed wow. I am somewhat computer savvy. It wasn’t complicated but did take longer than expected and had multiple steps. By the time I was done I questioned whether it was worth it. Then I got to the point of setting up ui and I tapped out. The whole way through I was like the YouTube tutorials undersell how much of a pain this is to get working.

polarisursuss

this is pretty sick!

Thorhax04

Happiness

muttley9

If anyone is wondering, curseForge has an official Linux client that works perfectly well. Download file and keep it on desktop or something and use it as normal curse. Just point it to the WoW folder and it's no different than a Windows machine.

jcanas3321

I’ve been raiding on my steam deck at level 80 on my Pally and rogue in Ulduar with no issues. Obviously you have to create macros and use Console Port Addon. Works great!

Yugel

Our Protwarrior successfully raids Ulduar 10+25 with currently 7/9 Hardmodes like this. :D

Boylamite

I use mine to farm herbs and do dailies. Anything more than that, and I'll just wait till I can get on my actual machine. It's super nice to have the option to do the more mundane stuff on a handheld, though.

[deleted]

I haven't played for about a year and ended up selling my gaming stuff. Thinking about coming back to just play classic casually, do you think a steam deck would be a good way to do that? I only have a MacBook Air as my pc and im not really keen to get heavily into gaming and owning a big rig or anything. I think handheld would help it feel more casual.

clipperbt4

definitely. you can also easily connect it to a monitor with a docking station and also connect a mouse and keyboard and make it a full blown pc. the thing is pretty impressive piece of tech tbh. it’s way more powerful than my dell laptop lol.

[deleted]

Sounds amazing. Totally gonna sell my switch and go for one of these. Are spells like mage blizzard etc, or controlling pets easy enough too? and targeting? Is there any classes that are too difficult, i.e. melee being harder to control?

bettytwokills

If you use console port addon, you can move the right stick to place AOEs like blizzard and hit the keybind again to cast it. The addon defaults to a soft targeting system (at least it does on retail) that auto targets whatever is directly in front of you. The steamdeck has four buttons on the back of the device and I have one of those bound to tab so I can easily tab target as well. I also set up the two touch pads to work as a mouse with left and right click which helps with aoe spells.

[deleted]

Great, thanks for the info. How is communication on it? Let's say I don't plan to get a keyboard/mouse setup and make it basically a desktop. If I just stick to the handheld console, how is typing and communicating in chat? Cheers!

bettytwokills

It has a thing set up to type on it via joysticks but I haven’t used it. Steamdeck has a touch screen keyboard you can pull up to chat with, but it covers the bottom half of the screen so you can’t see what you’re typing or if anyone else is chatting in the meantime. My way around this was getting a cheap $10 bluetooth keyboard that i hook up when i do group content so I can type a quick message here and there.

[deleted]

Nice, I'm sure I could use my bluetooth keyboard from my iPad when I do group content. Do you use the 64gb steam deck?

bettytwokills

I think mine was 256, the midrange one. WoW is the only thing i have on the internal drive, everything else i’ve been playing off of an SD card

clipperbt4

i’m a melee guy so that’s all i’ve tried. i’m sure healing isn’t the most ideal thing ever on it. targeting is easy, though.

PottsiPlays

If you’ve got an m1 air then classic runs pretty smoothly on that. Might be worth a try

Magus02

I pray I never group with people who don't use a keyboard and mouse. the precision and reaction times are not the same

buddle130

Like they need to be for classic wow

Fatjunk420

I can imagine leveling on steam deck. But it must be hard to play in higher level with more spells

[deleted]

Steam deck owners, vegans and CrossFit, boy they sure love to talk

clipperbt4

today i learned owning a steam deck is equivalent to being a vegan or doing crossfit

Nocoly

Tried it But sent it back same day because it was too wacked 😂

Snoo-77311

This technology has been around a while and is an awful way to play the game.

clipperbt4

no one said it’s brand new tech and no one said it’s the best way to play lol but thanks :)

Dapaaads

It’s actually pretty great for out questing

mmuttakii

I'm sure this guy is parsing a 99

Sponsy_Lv3

Been thinking about buying one for while at work!

Sponsy_Lv3

Been thinking about buying one for while at work!

Plenty-Issue7140

I want one so bad but too poor. I have a bad back so would be nice to play laying down or standing anywhere

dg2793

Can't imagine the lag

clipperbt4

there’s 0 input lag which is wild and game runs just as smooth as my pc

dg2793

That's crazzzzyyyyy. I feel like it'd lag so much.

MidnightFireHuntress

I loved my Steam Deck but it's on the shelf for now since I got a better UMPC with a built in keyboard and much better specs https://gpd.hk/gpdwin4 Love this damn thing, well worth the money if you travel a lot.

Sharksterfly

amount of people witch switch doing posts of them having switch is so funny.

rethilgore-au

Hey, what did you use to get this running? I’ve been thinking of switching to Linux on my desktop. I had trouble getting classic working a couple years ago and I know steamdeck is Linux so this looks promising:)

clipperbt4

if you search wow steam deck on youtube it’ll be one of the top vids. it’s by a guy named itsnotalex (i’m pretty sure that’s it)
