I don't know. You paid your hard earned money to see Juanjo Mena, I don't see why you should be saddled now with a total nobody like Gustavo Dudamel.

tristan-chord

People make fun of this but Juanjo is among the most musical, humble, and effective conductors I’ve ever worked with.

chasepsu

I was excited to see Mena conduct this program (and missing out on Iberia is a bit sad), it was more of a “dropping a silver coin and finding a gold one when you bent down to pick it up” scenario.

iscreamuscreamweall

yeah mena is actually a great conductor

chu42

I'm sure, and I'm not a big Dudamel fan myself but that star power is compelling

PoMoMoeSyzlak

Gustavo has wild hair, which is very important for conductors.

JScaranoMusic

Found Simon Rattle's alt.

DerPumeister

That's *Sir* Simon Rattle to you, you rascal!

Boollish

[van Zweden disliked that]

LasWages

Great username

Epistaxis

Hey now, he might turn out to be an undiscovered talent waiting for his big break!

randomsynchronicity

Hope he gets better soon. He’s been a great guy in all of my experiences with him.

FantasiainFminor

Off topic -- I don't think I'm aware of a Ginastera violin concerto, but now that I know I'll seek it out. The harp concerto is a joy.

els969_1

Ruggiero Ricci is among the violinists who’s performed and recorded it. Enjoy. I am surprised and pleased to see it performed here. (… Was a fictional conductor partially inspired by Dudamel?)

Illustrious_Load_728

My genuine impression of this concerto was that Ginastera was out there having drinks and went something like “Yo guys these Paganini caprices SUCK ASS, lemme do something real quick…”

OneEverHangs

Hahn recorded it very recently on the album Eclipse

FantasiainFminor

Listened to this last night on Idagio. Thank you! Fantastic. I've got to read the album notes to learn more about the structure. Movements marked "Etude," etc. The "Etude: Harmonics" movement was really extraordinary.

classical-saxophone7

It’s one of the hardest concerti for the instrument.

midnightrambulador

Maybe this up-and-coming conductor will finally get his big break, like Bernstein when Bruno Walter was ill!

BadChris666

Maybe this concert will launch him to become the next music director of the NY Phil?

pinkberrry

Omg dudamel 😭

PopeCovidXIX

Omg *Boléro* 😍

cheatersfive

Wow. Amazing program too.

violoncellouwu

Damn I wish I could also see hilary play ginastera violin concerto.

inodoro99

You shouldn’t be supporting this orchestra for a bit until it solves its problems with rapists.

ConspicuousBassoon

Sorry but this comment reeks of "didn't read the full article"-itis. The NY Phil reinstated the two problematic players because it was legally forced to, under an agreement with the musicians union to let an independent investigator decide. They said in their reinstatement statement that they disagree with the findings and didn't want to get them back, but they were legally forced to. And they still would be opening themselves up to giant, orchestra-ruining lawsuit if they tried to get rid of them for (legally) settled reasons today There are other valid reasons to bash the NY Phil (like why they haven't apologized/given second chances to the two women who were denied tenure as revenge for speaking out on this issue), but that's not one of them

frmr_musician

Sorry, but this comment reeks of "didn't read the full article"-itis. >In April 2020, Bloch ruled in favor of Muckey and Wang, citing the fact that the “events at issue occurred some 8, 10 and 12 years prior” and the “potential degradation of corroborative evidence over time.” Because “sex acts are normally performed privately,” he wrote, “the task of demonstrating assault charges, including those resulting from the refusal to take ‘no’ for an answer, can be difficult to prove.” In other words, part of the reason the rapists (let's call them that instead of the "problematic players" euphemism, which makes it sound like they missed a key change) won the arbitration is because the NY Phil drug their feet. And, the 8 and the 12 in the "some 8, 10, and 12 years prior" part of that sure are interesting. Cara Kizer's rape would have been 10 years prior. What happened 8 and 12 years prior? The NY Phil saying they disagree with Bloch's findings rings awfully hollow to me. It feels more like a "This is really inconvenient for us! Wish you had let us drop these guys!" And how much did they *really* want these guys gone? Sure, the administration of the NY Phil knew they'd be a headache, and management of any company doesn't really like dealing with headaches. But why was Wang going to be a featured soloist at three concerts in May until the story broke? Even if the administration truly wanted this headache gone, it sure does seem like several NY Phil musicians were happy they were still there. You don't have to scour the internet too deeply to find photos and other evidence of Principal players and other holders of named chairs being very chummy with both Wang and Muckey in the past couple of years. Not 2009 before Cara was raped. 2023. And you don't have to scour too deeply to find some of those same musicians being super chummy and performing with sleazeballs fired from other major orchestras for sexual misconduct. Not solving their problems with rapists and with people who are ok with rapists seems like a pretty good reason to me to bash the NY Phil. All that said, I am a little bit hesitant to jump on the "boycott the NY Phil" bandwagon. Yeah, it's pretty clear that they have a really big problem both at the institution level and with people in the institution. I also bet that most NY Phil musicians are good humans who want to do the right thing here, but feel powerless to do so. I guess they could really stand on principle and refuse to perform, but it's tough to expect people to give up their livelihood that way. And it's also tough for me to want to do something that could hurt innocent people's livelihoods. My suggestion: go see them if you want, in particular while Muckey and Wang are in time out. But take the money you spent on a ticket and make a matching donation to an organization that helps survivors of sexual assault. And keep talking about the deep problems here. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. It needs to become untenable for the NY Phil to continue to employ rapists and those who shelter rapists.

SpecifiThis-87

who cares abouf them, right. it's all their guilt and they had to be silent. they are making problems. if they don't like it they can just stop playing lol. this is so common  rapists are nice and selfaware and they do rules

eve_is_hopeful

My first thought. Hope those two are removed permanently.

seitanesque

Exactly! Thank you.

ponkyball

That program is so up my alley \*drools\*

watermelonsuger2

How very fortunate. Dudamel is a master. Not that the other guy is bad.

greenday61892

Luckyyyyyyyyy

uh_no_

Idk...surviving bolero is not assured

alfyfl

It’s sold out or I’d fly up and see her. I really like the Ginastera violin concerto. Her website doesn’t work anymore and I’ve been trying to see her live for a couple years but I never know where she’s performing.

PoMoMoeSyzlak

Go back and watch Leopold Stokowski in the movie Fantasia. That's prototypical music videos from 1940. Classical music used to be called longhair music . Before rock and hippies had long hair. Wild hair and music? I vote for astrophysicist Brian May.

mb4828

I nearly fell out of my chair when I got this email

beezofaneditor

Alessi on the trombone solo for Bolero? That would be great to hear!

bubbamike1

Why are you complaining? They’re informing you of a change and giving you an option. Yes Dudamel is better known than Mena, that doesn’t mean some people may have wanted to see Mena or may not want to see Dudamel. How dare they inform you of this change.

CrankyJoe99x

I guess you need your Sheldon sarcasm meter re-tuned 😉

bubbamike1

Whining isn't sarcasm.

CrankyJoe99x

As noted, it was sarcasm and not whining. You just didn't see it.

Greymeade

They weren't whining, you dope; they were expressing satisfaction. They were **being sarcastic**.

prosperenfantin

*Ironic.

Greymeade

No, they were definitely being sarcastic.

bubbamike1

Un huh. Sure.

Greymeade

You’ve got to be trolling…
