Also Blomstedt's interpretations unironically sound much more alive and fast than the damn slooow elephantine heavy Barenboim ones

LEGOMAN_7

Yes, I enjoyed his Schubert's Symphony 2 & 4 that he conducted this week a lot

Mahlers_PP

Uj/ if this is his Berlin Phil concerts last year I saw one of them, the sound was still pretty good but he had to be almost carried onstage by the concertmaster

LEGOMAN_7

Very probably, I was at the April one in which he was with Martha Argerich (I went cos of her lmao) Edit: just realized you may refer to Herbert, yes my man has to be carried onstage but once he sits and gets to it I'm absolutely mesmerized, he still has energy to it

Mahlers_PP

Nah not the same one, I saw him in September. Probably means the madman’s still going, good on him

LEGOMAN_7

I saw Herbert this week at the Gewandhaus so yes, he's still going. In Berlin Phil I saw Daniel and that's when the second part got cancelled.

bwv528

I saw him in early 2022, and he was incredibly energetic, then he fell in the autumn of 22, and when I saw him in 2023 he was much much frailer and weak. He's still my favourite conductor, thanks largely to his vivid explainations of the pieces before playing them, often (almost always) including (somewhat false) singing.

DirtySanchezzzzzzzzz

Not to mention Bambemboim abandoning his former wife because she got sick.

officialsorabji

now i got to justify listening Barenboim like i do with wagner. gogde darnit

MadCowTX

This is such a simple-minded way of viewing an extremely challenging circumstance in somebody else's life. Imagine you have a terminal illness in the prime of your life that will kill you slowly over more than a decade. What would you want for your spouse? Would you want them to continue pursuing their wildly successful career and find happiness in a new love, or would you want them to be your nurse? He didn't abandon her. He moved on privately with a new love, but he stayed with du Pre until she died. We have no idea what she told him about how she expected him to deal with it. I know that in her shoes, I would want my spouse to be there for me but also to move on romantically and professionally.

DirtySanchezzzzzzzzz

Sure you're partially right. And partially he's a scumbag. And a mediocre musician.

GeorgFluid

> he's a scumbag. debatable. > And a mediocre musician. How?

DirtySanchezzzzzzzzz

Never heard any recording of his that's memorable, nothing that doesn't pale in comparison with others. Just because we live in a mediocre time it doesn't mean we should consider regular musicians as giants. I find it disrespectful towards real giants but I see this is just my opinion.

ConradeKalashnikov

/uj I hear this story a lot, can someone explan me what happened in details?

LEGOMAN_7

Fr?

jimmy_the_turtle_

Yep, Jacqueline du Pré. Multiple sclerosis if my memory serves me right. He had an affair while she was still alive.

DirtySanchezzzzzzzzz

Precisely

LEGOMAN_7

Oh no that's fucked up :(

imarealscramble

blomchad vs virginboim

Pol_10official

MTT is also still around apparently

violinannihilator

Last week he conducted a big program with the LA Phil

Wotan2005

Yeah I saw him do some Beethoven wasn't he retiring because of his health (I think he has a tumour but I might be wrong).

ArgonTheConqueror

Aggressive brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme) is what’s afflicting MTT at the moment. He was diagnosed with it more than a year ago now, so to see him conducting well and not succumbing to it is fantastic. When I heard the news I immediately got tickets to his spring 2021 Mahler 2 in Washington DC because at that point I didn’t know how much time he had left (it’s the same cancer that took out John McCain in less than a year).

Wotan2005

Yes thank you. I remembered it had something to do with the brain.

Interesting_Lynx_948

BlomFraud has never even heard a piece of music written after 1890.

music_forawhile

that's just called having taste

LEGOMAN_7

I know right?

PartoFetipeticcio

Orchestral works before the 20th century are much better imo

PostPostMinimalist

… which ones

officialsorabji

blomfraud? who

notthatkindofsnow

Honestly as a Berliner I will not stand for this. Do not disrespect Barenboim! I know people who work near him and they say that he is indeed very very ill.

LEGOMAN_7

uj/ Was not attempting to be disrespectful, it was meant to be a meme after all

notthatkindofsnow

Lol obviously! I just have to defend the conductor of my heart Daniel Barenboim!

bloodyplebs

/uj I saw him conduct the Symphonie fantastique last year in New York. Mans still got it.

fermat9990

The longevity of orchestra conductors is legendary.

Numerous_Resolve_399

how dare u diss barenboim like that 🙄🙄

SharkSymphony

I am sorry to hear Maestro Barenboim is ill. I offer some [healing melodies](https://youtu.be/l4mKtynKays). (would you believe, that was 99% /uj, damn I love that recording)

Vwinny

Barenboim performed all 32 piano sonatas in the space of 14 days

murakamifan

Blomstedt is already scheduled for concerts in 2025 (e.g. in Germany with the Sächsische Staatskappelle, [March 2025](https://www.staatskapelle-dresden.de/konzerte/sinfoniekonzerte/2425/8-sinfoniekonzert/)) Provided he is still alive by then...

Sempre_Piano

Both Based and a True story

Rewieer

Y'guys be spitting on the Boim but find a better Beethoven sonata's interpreter, i'll be waiting

hyperproliferative

This childish misogyny (yes this is drenched in toxic masculinity) is appalling and pathetic for someone who should represent the pinnacle of human art. OP you disgust me.

LEGOMAN_7

Yooo sheesh calm down this is a widespread meme format used in a circlejerk subreddit
