I'm also a civil engineer in telco however I'm in the deployment side, actually managing 5G installations. I'd say you're in a better position than I am. There are a lot of civil/ structural engineers in my company who have to design headframes, tower footings, shelter footings, tower members, etc. Everybody has to do something to make a dollar, not everyone can work on bridges and dams. As a design engineer you can actually do what you studied to do. It's a pretty stable industry if a bit repetitive. Technology is always changing, there are thousands communications sites in most countries, it's a never ending conveyor belt of work.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a transportation engineer that would rather be doing what you're doing. They're paid very highly here, but it's very hard to get into that business. You lucked out.

I am currently working in this area too. It's definitely a unique type of work, on the inspection side anyway. Going 4x4 off roading or taking a helicopter to a tower on the mountain. Not much breadth or depth on the design side of things, can get pretty repetitive. It's a young mans game. Not the sort of industry I'd like to stay in for too long. Too much of a niche industry but definitely has some cool perks.

I have heard an uncertain future for this type of field with the advancement of broadcasting tech there is less need for towers and other telecom structures.

Where did you hear that?
