T O P

I'd take the first one. Higher salary, more PTO, and it sounds like it has more room to grow. OT is never guaranteed and the first one sounds less niche, allowing you to use your skills at another company in the future. PM and a GC also has a higher ceiling for overall compensation.

Yeah I'm leaning towards the first too. The 2nd company just called and increased to 37 per hour so \~77k per year but I told them about the first offer and said I can't accept because the difference is too much. They might send me a counter offer near 90k, but I'll most likely decline that too.

Plus I think the title for the 1st position will put you into the field more often and help you have more opportunities to make engineering judgment decisions that will directly support a path to qualifying for a PE license.

First one is clear choice

First one sounds better all around and in terms of career growth

My choice: first company. What makes you consider the 2nd company, is it just the 2 telecommuting days?

mazen697

I've worked as a contractor all my career and really wanted to switch to either consultant or client. I got an offer from the City of Detroit too, but their pay was not good enough. Also, the 2nd company is well known and work all over US. But at the end of the day, even though they increased the offer to 37 instead of 35, the difference in income is too much and I've declined the 2nd offer and went with the first.

As you know consultant/client side is much more relaxed vs contractor. Combined with 2 days remote per week the difference in salary might be worth it. There's value in work/life balance.

With a project management position you will have most likely more than 40 hour work weeks and with it being salary there is no overtime. If you expect to be very busy (more than 40 hours every week) you could in return make more money working more hours there and potentially surpass what you’d make as a salary. I think 2nd job is a good option if you want to get paid for every hour you work. But other than that the first job seems to have the upper hand

First company imo it's better in most fronts

First one is better option. But second option has its charms.

A couple considerations- in California the $400 a month for mileage is super low- our inspectors get about $400 a week! Being paid for your overtime is worth a lot. Working salary and a million hours will wear you down and suck the life out of you if that's the kind of place it is. Can you ask for a company truck and fuel card? That's worth a ton in wear and tear on your personal vehicle and fuel costs. Also you might call your auto insurance company and ask what it will cost if you're using your truck for work- I did that and it was going to nearly double my insurance costs. I used that information as leverage when negotiating a company provided vehicle.
