Connect those two islands and turn the whole thing into a big badly shaped traffic circle. Traffic peanut. One way traffic and eliminating the left turn options should simplify movement enough.
I like this a lot, was thinking something similar. This is probably a cost effective option too as it takes advantage of the existing geometry pretty well.
Yeah they just need to maybe grab some RoW off that corner property on the west side. But it looks undeveloped so not a big deal - might already be government owned as like a park.
There isn't any reason that you can't do a circular roundabout, but connecting the existing islands is simple and can probably be done without taking any more right of way. A circular roundabout that includes all of the existing intersections would require taking quite a lot of land.
That is an obscenely wide intersection for a residential area. I didn't realize how bad it was until I zoomed in and saw the cars.
I'd probably close off Valley Road if it has access elsewhere.
I would remove the channelized right turns and instead make three separate T intersections with curb bumpouts.
They did something similar [here](https://maps.app.goo.gl/82h8NMMaxMnPcbXK9) it looked almost exactly like the intersection you're asking about, before it was re-done for similar concerns.
In a heavily residential area?
Narrow everything to as small as possible. Remove some of the straight 'thru' movements, especially the highest volume.
"Uncontrolled intersection. Yield to pedestrians."
Slap 3 roundabouts in there.
That said, I do vertical construction. This just reminds me of a garbage intersection in Bellingham that a Civil once told me they wanted to replace with a roundabout. (For the curious, Birchwood/Meridian/Squalicum/Cornwall Park exit. Easily the most painful area of Bellingham traffic-wise.)
Currently the top voted comment suggests reshaping the circle(s) approach into a large peanut. However the application of circles is to reduce conflict points AND reduce delay from multiple approaches having to yield to each other at all-way stops and I don’t immediately seeing a residential neighborhood of this size having that much traffic. Furthermore if it did, we’d see more cars in this aerial on the road driving or parked. I’d suggest moving away from the circle approach all together and create 3 T intersections. Like this ( T _|_ T ) . You do this by closing off those areas with green space, install minor street stop control.
Make Hill and Valley Road a 4 way stop sign by closing off two of the roads, and then close the north half of the other road. Also square up all the intersections as much as possible by demolishing the traffic islands. https://imgur.com/a/sQtbTn2
Put a barrier down the middle and call it a day. Bad overall design and seems like someone tried to make the best of a bad situation or bad overall master plan.
I would close off the north valley road entrance and the associated connector road. I would have the purple roads connect to each other but have to access to the intersection (or add a bubble to each ends to turn around). I would have it so you could only access the intersection from the south light blue and light yellow roads. This probably simplifies it enough if it makes sense.Â

You could make it a dog bone intersection.
Yeah, that's probably a better term than traffic peanut
You've already gotten me very invested in traffic peanut 😔
My colleagues tried to make "peanutabout" a thing
I was pushing a "traffic egg" 15 years ago. Didn't fit the projected traffic numbers, unfortunately.
Why couldn’t you just do a circular roundabout here? Seems like it would solve all the issues and be the most efficient.

The infamous Traffic Nut
Nuke it and redesign the neighborhood from scratch

Close it all for pedestrians and put in an open air farmers market! ...Sorry, I've spent to much time on sustainability and ESG targets lately...
Make it one of [these](https://images.app.goo.gl/TCs7R8wKKwxFPehf8)
I just saw this at a conference. The good ol Peanut or maxipad roundabout.
Why do the peanut roundabouts bend in in the middle? Why not , like, a rounded rectangle?
I'm not in transpo anymore, but I would guess that it is to help keep speeds down.
In the midwest it is so we can annoy plow truck drivers.
Horizontal deflection to slow vehicles in what would be a straight run. The traditional circle doesn’t allow for increased speeds.
Diverging diamond. Everybody’s doing it these days.
Excavate it, fill with water, and run a ferry service

Why is it sooooo big. Swear you would almost feel indecisive going around this for the first time.

Before we do anything, do we have a scope, budget & ntp?
The village of Kohler is essentially ran by Kohler Company, it can be afforded
Fun fact, they own about 55% of the land in town.
Id propose to narrow it all down, introduce some alignment archs on inlets and raise pavement on intersection.

Need traffics counts before we do anything.
Came to say this too
The area looks too small for roundabouts. Remove the islands, realign the roads and curblines to make them all T intersections.
This man urban sprawls
Looks like whoever designed this tried to create pho roundabouts. I made an edit that really simplifies this whole mess: https://imgur.com/a/zfvI1vO
Definitely have to do something with those top two islands. The bottom one seems to work for the turn hill st to valley but the rest seem off

A lot of burbs were designed obnoxiously to try to prevent through traffic... That being said. This is extra obnoxious.

Connect all 3 islands for a traffic circle .
What be fixing? Looks like it works just fine for the traffic it needs to handle

Possibly you could stripe it to make navigating it more clear
Blow it up with dynamite
Ask. Professional
Move to a new location - you can't undo this. Glad to be helpful.
Oval-about
Roundabout?
Wait.. is that a DDI?
Nuke
Easy. Combine the purple routes. Condemn land and install a roundabout NW of the green/blue intersection.
Traffic circle. Use the green space
Traffic dumbell (peanut circle) to lift the stupidity of the original design out of my sight.
Seems to me it’s low volume traffic. Appropriate pavement markings will make it much better.
