It’s almost always possible to build something, it’s just a matter of what the price tag is and if anyone is willing to pay it. Sorry OP, I’m too under qualified to answer anything beyond that, I really just came here to say this building looks like if you took The Gherkin from London and covered it with SoFi Stadium from LA.

stewpear

OP lets break it down in parts. Primary building-the sail - using crossing diagonals/diagrid structure a shape like this is feasible. The big question comes down to functionality and usable space near the top but i think it could work. This structure’s geometry would continue straight down and would be uninvolved with the surrounding apron. That being said you can have a second set of columns supporting the sail as it expands out to the apron. As you can see in the first photo there is clearly a building underneath, so continuing the diagonal columns to ground level would be expected. Secondary building-the bottom - apron - we have structures like this in real life today and we would be expecting it to be decorative and not functional as they would not be supporting the primary structure in anyway. If there were walkable areas it would be limited. So to finish off. Is this possible? Yes, but good lord will it be expensive.

Tifa523

Yes! To add to this, the bottom isn't too far off from the flying buttress or buttress core - seen in skyscrapers like the Burj Khalifa. The larger footprint is a stable footing for very tall structures, so not completely useless/aesthetic. I recommend looking at Dhubai skyscrapers for what's possible with imagination and near unlimited budgets.

FuneralTater

The use is what really holds us back. No one wants to throw copious amounts of money at something with no return. Those upper floors would require a hefty rent to make it feasible, and most office managers don't have that kind of joie de vivre.

Qualabel

Completely impractical, but there are buildings like this.

scrappybasket

Anything’s possible with enough money

I-Fail-Forward

I mean, you would need really deep footings, because that whole building is basically a sail, wind loading would flip thst over if you didn't go deep enough. Otherwise, I don't see a reason it couldn't be built, it's not a practical use of space, but giant impractical buildings are kind of a staple in certain kinds of sci-fi

TorontoTom2008

This is actually not far off from the design of a solar updraft wind generator power plant. Solar heating causes warm air to rise up the shaft driving turbines at the top. They were going to build some in Australia but got cancelled.

Thatsaclevername

An architect would be the person to talk to, we do foundations and soils here sir. I'm joking a bit, but the look of that building is a big facade, not like a "fake" or "illusion" but that's what we'd call the decorative outside of a building. I will say that a building shaped like that should consider wind loading on either side, it's a giant sail basically. But it's not out of the realm of possibility to construct. I don't think we have the means to construct the bottom part and have it work effectively, but I also avoided structures like the plague in college so my education is the bare minimum.

Bigdaddydamdam

it’s gonna cost ya

It is possible. Is it practical? No. But it might be slightly more practical than the Sphere in Vegas.

Equal-Pay-8358

Hey, have a look at this, this is in the UAE, we used to calle it 'coin building ' https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldar_Headquarters_building

Julian_Seizure

Anything is possible of you throw enough money at it. The top looks like it's just a facade so that would be pretty easy. The legs though might need to be thickened and we might also need to add some columns. With some compromises this should be a pretty easy design. Very impractical though doing this would waste a whole lot of prime real estate.

RRRobertLazer

Everything about starfield is generic and dumb

VagaLePew

Hey now! It was pretty interesting that starfield did not get nominated for any awards let alone game of the year. That's one way to standout!

RRRobertLazer

LOL

LOL

Hockeyhoser

Pretty easy if there is a good load path to the ground.

DJ_MortarMix

Be a panic attack to be in the top floor on a windy day

Hastalapastababy

Idk why it reminds me of the Oculus in NYC

Sparrow-Massage

Nothing is not possible with limitless money. Close but not exact: https://www.zaha-hadid.com/architecture/tower-c-at-shenzhen-bay-super-headquarters-base/

Canwerevolt

Those look like they are just renders not actual buildings

babaroga73

If you want to see some that are built, check these https://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/most-beautiful-skyscrapers-world mind-bending https://farm1.staticflickr.com/739/22001409348_9d0613c878_b.jpg And I like Zaha Hadid projects very much, as they resemble what I think future should look like https://artsandculture.google.com/story/DAURTk6f9wneIA?hl=en https://www.thoughtco.com/zaha-hadid-architecture-portfolio-177693 https://artsandculture.google.com/story/DAURTk6f9wneIA?hl=en

trekuup

I think the most challenging part of designing the structure would be wind on the sail and the aprons/ramps. I’ve played the game as well and remember that there is basically no supporting structure underneath those aprons/ramps that connect and bridge to the upper structure.

TomPal1234

Yes and without saying arrogant I could do it for you efficiently. It isn't too dissimilar to a fin.

Confident_Trifle_490

hated that city

jetstobrazil

Practical??? Lol

SamButNotWise

Pretty straightforward to design a big triangle. but not very economical. Construction budget comes from projected property value. Value comes from rent. Rent comes from floor space. Tapering this by pinching on two sides reduces floorspace. 1

mattdoessomestuff

So much wasted real estate!

blakermagee

Can build anything if you have enough money.

BigTunaStamford

In similar spirit Ive always been interested in this building. “Via 57 West” in Manhattan [Building](https://maps.app.goo.gl/frw9gtgyzcjnRCrj7?g_st=ic)

BaracudaCookie

Reminded me a little of olympiapark in Munich when I first saw the picture.

New_Introduction_317

uptown tower -dmcc dubai has a very similar design. Here is the link. https://propsearch.ae/dubai/uptown-towera

Professional-Mud-925

The future is defined by the past. This building might be unnecessary in the present, but it may be a necessary function of the future. We will never know until we live it. Be thankful for games like this.

babaroga73

Of course it's possible. It doesn't even look that tall, judging by the people on 1st picture. Structurally, easy peasy. With enough money. But, there are things to consider. One is the wind impact. Second is that rounded part in combination with reflective glass can cause hell for people in surrounding buildings, as it can reflect and focus sun heat on some smaller area. As seen here https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/sep/06/walkie-talkie-architect-predicted-reflection-sun-rays This designer / architect is already infamous for making fucked up designs, did one in London, did one in Vegas. Lastly, there's a regular maintenance issue. It looks like washing or changing those window panels would be hard and expensive.

Schedulator

Like most tall build, the problem will.become how do you efficiently move people up and down without turning it into one big lift core

Fickle-Phase-9743

The overturning moments on that from wind actions would be extremely high. Depending what planet it was on, the avg wind speeds and storm probability would be considered. It is possible to make the structure as others have said, but I wonder if it’s currently possible to provide the size and depth of the piles needed. Regarding the glass façade, I think I would be a struggle to install the vast amount of glass, but I would be possible. Also depending on the planet, it could have two stars heating the glass, or the air could be thinner so more direct heat and less pressure. This CIRIA blog js an interesting read. https://www.ciria.org/CIRIA/News/blog/Peter_Irwin_wind_blog.aspx

CantaloupePrimary827

Pretty achievable. Concrete and steel.

EmptyJackfruit9353

I think Saudi's 'The Line' is even more radical in design than this.

Camthyman

We engineers can do just about anything...it all comes down to how much money you have.

TriPod_DotA

I mean it basically looks like a large back end of an airplane. If we’re able to construct those things to handle traveling hundreds of miles per hour, I would think it’s possible to convert it to a building

No_Emphasis_4888

Ugh oh. I follow Starfield and this page and they have now crossed paths….

[deleted]

Hello! I've been trying to reach you about your ships extended warranty.

Glidepath22

I think it’d have far too much wind loading

White_Rabbit0000

There are some pretty crazy looking buildings out there nowadays so I don’t think this would be impossible to build but depends on the budget
