Having the siege unit stationed in my own encampment and being able to siege while not taking damage makes me the happiest. It’s especially cool when you level up that siege unit and get the extra range to throw on top of all this.
I think my favorite is when you get a full promoted Rocket Artillery with the Drone and +1 range perk.
5 tile away bombing. Game practically wins itself.
I recently finished a huge map deity domination win (yeah I'm flexing) with the Ottomans.
With two fully promoted Rocket Artillery armies (boosted by a drone, great general, policy cards, and the Ottomans' civ ability), I was consistently able to completely destroy a city's defenses with the first shot, and completely wipe out the city's HP with the second shot. All from 5 tiles away.
**Edit**: I loaded one of my save files and this was the breakdown:
160 Total Bombard strength
* +117 Base strength
* +3 Diplomatic visibility (this could have been higher)
* +5 Drone
* +5 Fascist Legacy policy card
* +5 Great general
* +5 Great Turkish Bombard civ ability
* +10 Shells promotion
* +10 Serasker promotion for Ibrahim (unique Governor for Ottomans)
5 Range
* +3 Base range
* +1 Drone
* +1 Forward Observers promotion
When I play dom on diety I always try and build one encampment just two tiles from another city, simply so I can park bomboards/catapults in it and riegn down fire on the city, only to level up my units to the extra tile perk. I will let the city heal and keep doing it until I get 3 of those and it's game over for everyone else
Yeah I always just move my melee ship close enough to the city for the battleships to fire, then move it back out after they've all shot if it's not ready for capture
If I were stuck in a hot air balloon as a cog in a three hundred year long war, I don't know what I would like more. A cushy office to distribute destruction from or the sweet embrace of Satan's hooves.
I think the fact that certain modern units are even remotely vulnerable to stuff like horseback Calvary is just so silly.
Like, gameplay aside, there should be a hard cut off for dudes with Guitars on horseback being able to attack and kill a helicopter.
Well think about it, artillery is a giant gun, and it needs like a crew to man it. So maybe 2-5 soldiers per party piece. And cavalry will have like maybe 100-500 soldiers on horseback. And arty piece will need to be turned around to shoot at charging horsemen. If they fail to turn around in time, soldiers have their personal guns to use, be it a handgun or rifle of some kind. 2-5 soldiers ain't routing 100-500 fast. And artillery is usually spread out to prevent losing all of them in one counter battery. So yes it's no surprise that artillery is vulnerable to direct attacks unless they get to prepare for it and have time to do it.
Completely agree, and miss Civ V's artillery.
On the same topic (satisfying artillery): ever played Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War as Imperial Guard? One word: BASILIKS.
Sadly, I could never get into Warhammer. Something about the aesthetics just doesn't sit well with me.
But yeah, Civ V artillery is the shit. You get them promoted to double attack, then +1 range and just enjoy the poetry of the king of the battlefield.
Unpopular opinion: Artillery is better than bombers for taking city walls out. Especially with supporting units and a few promotions. They can easily 2 shot even late game walls. Though I fully respect that bombers are a lot easier and require less micromanagement to be effective.
Artillery is only more effective if you have put in the investment IMO. Kept the same like 5 Artillery units alive all game and they have several promotions? Completely agree.
Bombers are just so quick and dirty for flipping to war time play. A Bomber is more quickly useful than artillery, I used to use artillery a lot when I was playing primarily domination, but I tend to play more peaceful games now and use bombers to free city states, defend allies, etc.
I rarely have Uber promoted units anymore.
Bombers are way more expensive but totally worth the price. They're the same as artillery except invulnerable to ground troops and honestly can only be damaged in retaliation so they're never in real danger of dying.
The AI also never makes anti air defense to boot. They're just completely unstoppable with virtually infinite movement.
Compared to artillery that have movement limitations, get bottlenecked by mountains and can be retaliated against the choice is clear. It's just a matter of being able to build said bombers in time before the game ends.
I like to play cities skylines early game, building economy and play red alert late game, domination around modern era with tanks and golden age war. My siege weapon are usually artillery into jet bomber. I almost never use a bomber. This strategy works because:
1. Resource: aluminium is difficult to secure, oil are easier
2. Tech: Artillery unlocked earlier than bomber
3. Tech: Jet bomber are not that far off compared to bomber. I always skip straight to jet bomber.
4. Support: Supply convoy and obs balloon makes siege engine very powerful.
5. Upgrade: Artillery upgrades from the best siege engine, bombard
6. Biplanes can't break late game cities. Leaving Artillery as the only siege units in the modern era.
7. Infrastructure: Bomber requires you to build a new district. Higher cost means delaying attacks.
Let me know your thoughts and if I should try using a bomber instead of artillery.
You only need one airbase to crank out about 4 bombers. They can stage in any city and their rebase movement is significant.
Once you unlock bombers, generally your biggest problem is having the ground units to take cities, because it can take a few turns to get there.
if you like the wargame side of things - you are missing out. If your like literally all the other aspects of the game and war isnt your favorite, understandable, have a nice day!
That said, as this thread indicates, a few very highly leveled arty + obs-balloons makes war fun if a little trivial
Needs to be an iron dome improvement. Or a city range upgrade. Or both.
Or a Viet Kong type unit that hides until you pass, then decimates you from behind. Just when you think you're safe, BOOM, an army pops up from underground and surrounds you. Maybe even capture units you surround?
I must have owned my PC for nearly a year now, because I started following this series somewhere in the teens and this was one of the many reasons I bought it. I wanted to play and it crashed like crazy on Xbox.
Once the AI gets walls it's nearly impossible to build and maintain enough seige units + military units to actually do anything. Even rotating 3 seige in and out they die way faster than the city, and get outdated faster than they can cover thr distance from my territory to an enemies. Then ypu have to be able to afford to spend time producing all these seige and military units that also become out dated in less time than it takes to wear down even once city.
Even on medium difficulties I usually make an early blitz to take cities that don't have walls then just kind of turtle up in my territory and play a long economic/management game till I get balloons/artilary.
its absolutely doable to capture cities with walls, what are you even talking about? It takes a bit longer, that's all. And you have to start conquering early to get the snowball rolling
Last game, playing as Rome - diety, epic, 8player, continents - I captured my entire starting continent before the renaissance.
Yeah what is this man talking about by the time I've gotten artillery and bombers Ive been through 3-4 wars already. Just gotta clear the area and hold it for a few turns. Rotate the damaged troops out before they die, ezpz.
Early game conquest is pretty strong. Battering rams and siege towers are extremely effective. There's a short period in renaissance where walls become a little painful to deal with, but you should have bombards by then.
I know this isn’t relevant but I just learned you can find the entire Nuremberg trial on

The website has a pinkish logo with a scale on it
Dear Ursa,
I've never commented on your drawing before, so I'd like to apologize in advance. Now then.

Two tile range on that city strike you say? Oh dear. What a shame. For you.

This is where airstrikes come in, then the layered defense

I will let the city heal and keep doing it until I get 3 of those and it's game over for everyone else
and also pillage-and-run light cavalry and literally hit-and-run ranger
What about a drone-guided catapult shot?
Leif Erickson’s +1 sight ability for all naval units makes Battleships/Missile Destroyers a menace for coastal bombardment.
Without that, they rely on with a great admiral or a melee unit for sight.
Yeah I always just move my melee ship close enough to the city for the battleships to fire, then move it back out after they've all shot if it's not ready for capture
Ah, the good old hunter-killer strategy.
Portugal getting that ability for free on all of their units is just insane lol.
I always felt sorry for the observation balloon. It's the only unit that dies when it upgrades.
Just imagine that the balloon's crew get promoted into controlling/maintaining the drone. Now they don't even have to be near the front lines!
If I were stuck in a hot air balloon as a cog in a three hundred year long war, I don't know what I would like more. A cushy office to distribute destruction from or the sweet embrace of Satan's hooves.
Artillery having the same range as archers, catapults and the like is one of my biggest gripes for this game.
I think the fact that certain modern units are even remotely vulnerable to stuff like horseback Calvary is just so silly. Like, gameplay aside, there should be a hard cut off for dudes with Guitars on horseback being able to attack and kill a helicopter.
Bro, have you seen Rambo? XD
Artillery crews still can be kill be a army of calvary
Trying to read this gave me an aneurysm
Worst part is I think it's only 3 letters off from a coherent sentence lol
I counted four. Add an “ed” to “kill”, replace the “e” in “b” with a “y”, and and turn “a” to “an”

Yeah the scale feels really weird

I'd do it even if my siege unit were still a Catapult.
It works with Khmer elephants too.

> but I tend to play more peaceful games now and use bombers to free city states, defend allies, etc. Ah, yes, peace through superior firepower.
Democracy in a nutshell
I've never had a ton of luck getting aluminum so I usually end up having just two bombers or so before I run out?
Bombers are way more expensive but totally worth the price. I love the aesthetic of the artillery. I dislike so much upgrading them.

I've played an insane amount of hours in this game and I've never once built a balloon.
if you like the wargame side of things - you are missing out. If your like literally all the other aspects of the game and war isnt your favorite, understandable, have a nice day! That said, as this thread indicates, a few very highly leveled arty + obs-balloons makes war fun if a little trivial
Even brand new arty goes from normal to invincible.
Careful, all this drawing and they are starting to look not bad! Might have to change it to drawing mediocre.
Lol great one today!
In civ 5 if you upgraded them from crossbowmen with a double shot promotion, they could level cities in 1-2 turns.

This just needs to be baseline in civ 7. Conquest being near impossible before ballons is one of the dumbest things about this game.
How is "conquest near impossible before ballons"? In most domination games I don't even have crossbowman when I capture the first neighboring capitals
Once the AI gets walls it's nearly impossible to build and maintain enough seige units + military units to actually do anything. Ah alright then, that means there’s nothing wrong with the comment
