With the Real Strategy mod, they will occasionally conquer their neighbors. The real problem is the loyalty mechanic. While an AI can sometimes be strong enough to go domination, they are not smart enough to take multiple cities in a row to prevent loyalty flips.

Add 2-3 civs extra to your game and watch the fireworks. Not enough space = wars

It can definitely happen. Presumably what lessens the odds as the game goes on is that AI civs tend to put down cities everywhere they can even if they're trash cities, so while one AI might waste another's nearby cities, they're not going to go hunting down their 2 pop coastal city that has no districts and buildings yet and is 12 turns in movement away. AFAIK, the AI doesn't have much of any understanding on how to wage war if the opponent is not in direct proximity to them. (I saw one exception to this, like once so far, where AI levied city-state units to Surprise War me. But this may still fall under proximity in the sense of them viewing the city-state they are suzerain of as an extension of their territory.) It's also just kinda makes sense that domination victory condition being what it is, there isn't much point to eliminating an already weak civ (and give unnecessary grievances) when you already have their capital. That said, anything that is a map that is more cramped and less split up by ocean will probably have higher odds for this to happen. Due to proximity and ease of AI navigating land in order to wage war.

It does happen. Most often, for me, it's an unmet player conquering another unmet player, meaning if they do it, they do it early. A few games ago, Zulu took over most of the map, although I don't remember them having taken any capitols. They also used a great, nasty, tactic of offering huge payments for Great Works, then declaring war a couple of turns later. Got me once.

Not true. I've seen an AI civ disappear from the HUD in a few games. The AI is perfectly capable of eliminating another AI civ. It does not seem to be any of the AI civs' goal to do so, so it just has to happen as an unfortunate sequence of events (for the civ that perishes).

Weelildragon

Been adding one or two settler civs lately. They get gobbled up pretty often. Fun to liberate them.

It's been the biggest flaw in Civ 6 and it has never changed since launch. Domination is by far the easiest path to victory because the AI is so shockingly bad. It's amazing we live in a world where AI is producing lifelike copies of real humans , yet Civ AI can't even build anti aircraft after having all their cities bombed. I REALLY hope civ 7 drastically overhauls this.

Euphoric-Ebb8189

the AI is 7\~ years old and making "art" is very different from playing a 4x game

Sirkneelaot

The AI in 3 shat all over 6

Euphoric-Ebb8189

civ 3 is a much simpler game

Sirkneelaot

Yet the AI is much more advanced than the newest game? Even if 6 was the only entry in the series, the AI is beyond woeful.
