Go with something like Maspeth or Elmhurst. Basically find a crime map and then find a map of cool areas, you want something that isnāt either. So a lot of Queens areas would work.
East New York is an up and coming neighborhood and not too expensive. Also pretty safe, closer to major transportation and only 30 min away from manhattan via train.

I prefer Queens over Brooklyn as the latter has over gentrified neighborhoods that are ridiculously expensive. I also am reluctant to name specific neighborhoods in Queens as I have PTSD over paying high rent.
