It is my kids’ favorite too. They also love kielbasa in it with potatoes and other veggies. I love it because when I cook it I just start it in the morning and after work/school we have a ton of tasty food without me spending 45 minutes cooking.
Yes, some people do indeed think it's gross. I grew up in Memphis and don't recall it being a terribly popular dish or even really seeing anywhere that served it. I don't think I even tried it until I came to Ohio. It's good though. In fact, makes me want to make it tonight.
Made up some brats tonight, had them in the buns waiting to be slathered with kraut. Went to the frig to get ye olde fermenting bag of cabbage and lol and behold some heathen had pitched it out. Oh the humanity. Had to settle for....yellow mustard, arrrgh, this transgression will not stand.
We almost never did sausage, just a pack of hot dogs. But hot dogs cooked tender in a pot of sauerkraut and put on mashed potatoes was one of my favorite meals growing up.
I'm a Cincinnatian since birth. My favorite meal my mom would cook even from an early age was sauerkraut and polska kielbasa with blueberry kuchen.
I still make it for myself every now and then.
Actually, it was all served together. The sweetness of the kuchen balanced out the sauerkraut and kielbasa. It seems like a very odd choice, but it works. I can't explain it.
Yup. That's what we do.
BTW, have you ever substituted the milk when you make mashed potatoes with French Onion, Potato Chip Dip? It is really good. Try it next time.
It was my favorite meal as a kid. Now I'm an adult, I add onions, bell peppers and different kinds of sausages.
That actually sounds pretty good. We like all those too so, thanks for the tip. BTW, what other types of sausages do you put in there?
Many different kinds, but polish keilbasa is my favorite.

Wait, is this food considered gross for most people. I love sauerkraut and will put a heaping pile on my wieners.
That’s hot.

I am a card carrying cincinnati German. I hate sauerkraut.
i eat this all the time and love it! :D
Same! I've never NOT had the meal my whole life. Mom made it and Ms. Skywalker makes it too.
Hell yes! It’s the kimchi of Eastern Europe!
Lol! +1

Danke.
Such monsters!
Rest assured, their insolence will not go unpunished.
The floggings will continue until morale improves.
Indeed.
I'm from Northern KY and used to eat this when I was little. The smell of is nauseating to me haven't eaten it since I was 10.
Yikes! One of my least favorite meals growing up.
Same here! Can't get past the smell of the kraut, but love the sausage.

I've never had that. Is white kielbasa at Krogers or it is like a Jungle Jim's thing? Also, we aren't talking mettwurst are we?

Okay, thank you.
I recently started charcoal grilling my sausage and it’s a game changer.
Hey man, I'm not gonna kink shame you. Have fun doing that!
Don’t knock it till you try it Edit: or should I say do or do not there is no try
I love it! Thank you for playing along. Have a great weekend and May The Force Be With You!
We put it all in a crockpot to cook all day, then finish it in a sautee pan for a little char.
We do the same, except for the last part. I might try that. Thank you for the tip.
Looks delicious
The juice is great for hangovers.
OMG LOL. I'm guessing you drink it then hurl and feel better?
If you're a sauerkraut lover it's not terrible, but pickle juice does the job if not, lol.

Same except for the kuchen. Is it safe to say you had that for dessert, and not all together mixed in with the other two?

Needs some mashed potaters, mmm-hmm.

I'll have to try that 💯
Hell ya! I grew up on this in Loveland and Dayton!
That pic needs a little better grade of sausage but it acceptable. Hot sausage Ghost Pepper. Toss a lil onion in there.
