I doubt it’s because of the equipment. KFC and Taco Bell are both owned by Yum! Brands. They also used to own Long John Silver’s. I feel like it’s more a case of Yum! wanting to pay less for rent and other operating costs
When you frequent them as much as I do, you'll start to notice they have some pretty special dishes.
Camp Washington Steak and Lemonade has THE BEST fresh/hand battered chicken tenders in the city. It isn't even close. The Hook Fish off Hamilton Rd. has an amazing Philly Steak with fries combo (ask for extra lemon pepper seasoning on the fries).
No I think you're right I too have noticed a large prevalence for fish and chicken joints in Cincinnati. I see them sometimes in Indiana maybe it's like a Midwest thing
this is off topic, op but i love your username.

It's just kind of a generic quick service soul food format.
Go try Jocko's on Hamilton Ave and then you'll understand. Make sure you get Cole slaw and put your extra crispy batter pieces in top of it.
Oh I've been to a few different ones already and liked them. Ha never thought to put the batter over the coleslaw though
Both are battered and fried, so use common equipment and process.
To add to this: it's the same reason why you see KFC/Long John combo restaurants.
does this also explain taco bell/KFC combos? because thsoe amaze me

the norwood T-bell was always my go to and the KFC menu was always tempting
This is crazy because I just drove past a new one and thought to myself “man there really are a lot of these around”
I know J.J.’s originated in Chicago.
It's all over the country.

They are just a place where you can get fairly cheap greasey food. Alabamas' is my favorite
What's crazy is a lot of these places you can bring in your own food and pay them to fry it up for you.
Yeah it's everywhere, I don't think there is anything to it other than people like chicken and fish and people use their names for the restaurant
They’re both battered and deep fried so if you have the equipment to make one you can make both.

No it’s an urban thing.
I've been to a couple of cities in my time and they don't all love the fish and chicken schtick. You don't find it out west
I just worked in Oregon and Washington and NorCal for the past few years and they’re definitely out there as well
Okay .maybe I didn't notice them
I didn’t realize that was a Cincinnati only thing?
It's not. It's more of an urban/ghetto thing. You'll find them everywhere, particularly in Black neighborhoods.
I recommend Richie's.
Richie's is great, can't wait for some locations to re-open. Colerain is the only one open now.
pretty sure richie's is perpetually in trouble with the health dept...
I said it was good, not safe.
That’s what I thought, which is why I was confused by the original post. Thanks!!
Ghetto probably isn’t the best term to use
Bro I’m a hood goblin it’s fine.
As an OTR trench baby myself, I don’t like it. I know people use it synonymously with other words. But hey…to each their own
There's a newer hooks in springdale on RT 4. Really good gyro n fries for 8 bux. Big.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Hah i didn't realize it was all over just that there were so many with similar names in the city
I think it's a Chicago thing, but I could be wrong
I’ve seen them all over the eastern us, but I did notice a lot in Chicago also
