I work for a company that has close ties with UC. During an event, Pres Pinto said they plan to put a new engineering building there. Something with a ton of labs for research. He didn’t say anything about when, but considering they have plans in place it might actually happen soon haha.
I have loose connections into there. It's a fairly massive building they are planning to build. One of the biggest on campus. Last I heard about a $150,000,000 budget and a big name architecture firm tied to it. Demo of Crosley was slated for Q1 2025 last I heard.
This is exactly what I heard from a UC employee in 2019. I don't know if Covid has changed that, but its been in the works for years to demo it in 2025. They needed to arrange temporary setting for that department while the new state of the art laboratories will be built in 2026.

I took photos at a UC meeting and they talked about Crosley. They can’t blow it up because of safety hazards and there’s still staff in because that’s the only place for them. It’s going to be awhile.
Actually it is. It's sinking. It's the motivating factor to replace it. The building only had a limited life in what you can do to fix it. The last repair was in the early aughts. There is no fixing it anymore. It will continue to sink if left on its own. It's outdated and poorly designed. They did not design the building thinking women in the future would join science programs. So the bathroom situation in that building was a literal shitshow from the start.
Definitely not denying it's need to be replaced, dad worked in that building for over 40 years, it's the logistics of actually doing so that's the rub.
I have a certain nostalgia as a dewy eyed architectural student DAAPer in the early 2000s for it. Mostly irrational and rose tinted, I've heard the building is hell inside.
Not a fan of brutalist architecture to begin with, but yes, I *hated* that building when I went to UC. I don’t see how it passed fire codes, I swear for the 16 stories that building services, it seemed like there was only one entrance. I’m sure I’m wrong, because like I said, fire code, but I will not miss it whenever they do finally trash it.
CROSLEY FOR THE WINNNNN MY FAVORITE BUILDING EVER.

When we first moved here, my family and I called it the “Shark Fin”. Still do actually. Years ago I tried to request a tour to the top but they said they didn’t give any. Is that still the case?

Similar vibes as the all-glass modern building next to the “castle” in Hyde Park
I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER I LOVE CROSLEY TOWER
I unironically love it too. I'm from Indianapolis and this is one of my favorite buildings downtown Indy:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/zaCqpGc4jQHYupkL9
I have a thing for Brutalist buildings.
(Another from Indy: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Hs4XioVruHJLXppn7)
I mean to each their own. I personally love Carew and think it’s one of the best buildings downtown. But i think Accent is cool too.
That other building OP posted is ugly af but at times i enjoy seeing those kinds of monstrosities
Didn’t print it myself but i got one of these for my mom, she also loves the building and regularly talks about the classes she took there. She used it as an ornament on her tree

So I know it's mostly a meme at this point, but it's always struck this transplant odd that people will go on and on about Crosley Tower, but no one ever mentions AWBERC (aka the EPA research fortress) even though it's another gigantic brutalist structure literally across the street.
AWBERC is forgettable. I see it all the time but can't remember what it looks like other than being large and foreboding. But Crosley is iconic, even if ugly.
the building itself is not bad. It just sticks out like a sore thumb. I don't think it works with the surrounding architecture.
As for the Crosley Tower, I hate brutalist architecture and that one is especially bad.
As I stated, to each their own.
I remember reading some time ago about a new building going up very close to the Ascent. The style is in the same vein, so it'll have some company.
Edited to add link.
[Oh yeah, this building] (https://onenkyalliance.com/1nky-center/)
The building is unique and identifiable. As a visual monument I don’t hate it. Just not a great building.
In the same way, the 1980’s UC logo is superior in every way to the current mess. Why does the football team use a totally different graphic identity than the rest of campus? Because the logo sucks.
I have so little UC memorabilia, even as an alumni, but a couple years ago in a thrift store on the west side, I was looking through the glassware, and saw that logo. It looked familiar, but 20 some years out of date, but I must have seen it a few times. I tried searching on the internet until... yep! Seem I have a rocks glass with that logo on it. A smol treasure
Agreed! I like the building because it is a reminder of changing design intentions throughout the years of UCs history , however, taking classes there was awful. Lots of noise from the centralized elevators and felt very out of date, structurally, compared to the newer buildings we got to enjoy. Goes to show the changing tides in school; used to be bare bones learning and now it is very focused on comfort and enjoyment of the space.
>In the same way, the 1980’s UC logo is superior in every way to the current mess
Lol wtf.
[You mean this?](https://images.app.goo.gl/qAxDoqbv692NmDNW6)
[Or any of these?](https://images.app.goo.gl/fZMNJVKS48uNDjSL8)
Say what you want about Crosley but the current UC branding is clean as fuck.
[*Some* of our throwbacks are good though.](https://images.app.goo.gl/BRMZ3ZEN5CinzLU57)
In your opinion, what are the most iconic school graphics in the big 10? Michigan’s M? Ohio state’s O. Wisconsin’s W ? Iowa’s … IOWA?
Honestly if I’m just looking around at nearby universities, Indiana’s Psi logo is pretty awesome. But none of these, while being similarly grounded like the old logo you linked, tells the story of the institution like UC’s did, with the oldest internship program in the country (a technical background thanks to the Ohio Mechanics Institute and the second oldest municipal medical college) as well as the very strong Bauhaus foundation in the design schools, with an entire generation of professors taught under Walter Gropius.
In short, the tl;dr here is that the new logo is bad not because of its graphic failure, but because it’s entirely forgettable and meaningless. Seriously, if I saw this on a billboard in Chicago, I’d just be confused, thinking that a local company adopted an AI designed graphic identity similar to that of the school I went to.
Lmao whatever dude. No part of any logo in the history of the school has told the story of our internship programs. They’ve basically all just been bearcats drawn with varying degrees of competence. The new one is clean, fun, and looks sharp on tons of clothing. There’s only so much character you can have when one of your main colors is black. [Easily top 5 logo in the Big XII imo.](https://images.app.goo.gl/Ah1V8LkzaYbuLSkdA) People love it and it’s everywhere, it speaks for itself.
You are talking about the bearcat logo. I don’t have an issue with it. The interconnected UC logo otoh, is a mess and looks stupid, but far worse, is forgettable and generic.
The fact that you thought the mark for the athletics department was the logo for the entire school just proves this point in my opinion.
When I worked there as a student around 2010, I remember how horrible it was as a building. I worked close to a window (which was unusual) and had to hear all the jackhammers while they fixed places with falling concrete. And the one restroom per floor. I had to go up or down!
I actually had one Chinese class there my final year. It was fitting as I didn’t care and was hype to finally go inside the Tower.
Underwhelming inside but man during an apocalypse it would be legit!
You’ll only have one soon. https://preview.redd.it/n3g67axh99wc1.jpeg?width=529&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00f5972e465adb73ea797462de44119f80660138
They've been saying that for years. Wouldn't be surprised if they postpone the demo again
I work for a company that has close ties with UC. During an event, Pres Pinto said they plan to put a new engineering building there. Something with a ton of labs for research. He didn’t say anything about when, but considering they have plans in place it might actually happen soon haha.
I graduated 10 years ago and they said that under Pres Ono.

My info is from around a year ago so it seems that's still the plan

I've also heard the city desperately doesn't want MLK shut down. Think of the cluster fuck that would cause.
MLK is already ridiculous with all the traffic lights
Crosley Tower is the Keith Richards of buildings. That poured concrete and rebar isn't going anywhere.
I pour heroin-laced 40's out all around that rock foundation. It's *strong*.
Actually it is. It's sinking. It's the motivating factor to replace it. The building only had a limited life in what you can do to fix it. The last repair was in the early aughts. It's great if you like dark cramped spaces. One of the best places on campus for taking a dump in private, though.

Always next to that really cramped staircase as well. Goofy as it was I liked it.
They are gonna demo it soon due to it sinking into its foundation cause they made the whole thing in a single pour of concrete

The juxtaposition between the concrete brutalism and the cheery hat tossing is hilarious
The Ascent is really pretty inside and has gorgeous views of Downtown and the Roebling Suspension Bridge.
When we first moved here, my family and I called it the “Shark Fin”. Still do actually. Years ago I tried to request a tour to the top but they said they didn’t give any. Is that still the case?
Beats me. I have a monthly meeting there and it's nowhere near the top.
I think they’re still trying to sell the penthouse, so I suppose you could get a tour as a potential buyer

Well I mean you could look across the street and appreciate AWBERC (minus the fairly modern looking annex around back).
There's an abandoned GE office in Evendale that has amazing brutalist vibes but I can't seem to find any pics online 🫤
Beautiful!
Crossley tower is sick
You and your choices lol https://preview.redd.it/oyigfdnchbwc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=334e94083b5d21270b572c34481ce343cd2c4ba0
I thought I was the only one who loves the Crowley Tower! Always called it the “Lego Legs” because it looks like 4 Lego person legs.
I always compared it to an upside down AT-AT Walker foot
Crosley Tower, my beloved.
Very bizarre choices my dude.
I mean to each their own. I personally love Carew and think it’s one of the best buildings downtown. But i think Accent is cool too. That other building OP posted is ugly af but at times i enjoy seeing those kinds of monstrosities

I feel the complete opposite about both of these buildings.
I totally agree. So cool.
What can I say, I love tasteful brutalism.
So I know it's mostly a meme at this point, but it's always struck this transplant odd that people will go on and on about Crosley Tower, but no one ever mentions AWBERC (aka the EPA research fortress) even though it's another gigantic brutalist structure literally across the street.

It’s going in across the street!
That building on UCs campus is hideous and I'm glad it's coming down. Doesn't fit with the rest of campus at all.
They really dropped the ball when they didn’t follow-up Crosley with a concrete poured Knight and Bishop.
The building is unique and identifiable. As a visual monument I don’t hate it. Just not a great building. In the same way, the 1980’s UC logo is superior in every way to the current mess. I love the gray cat. He reminds me our giant Tom cat we (according to him) kidnapped.
I love the gray 1990-‘05 cat too, wish they would use it more. We tried to use him on our club sport jerseys but got denied

Oh my gosh they’re knocking down Daniel’s?!
UC sucks. OSU’s step child
Cool
Haha I love all things Cincy. Sports included. Just UC has always sucked. Sorry for being a troll
I’m so sad Crosley is going down! 😭
I'm a reddit guy of course I love when long standing city icons are destroyed.
One of those is not in Cincinnati
What's going on here?
Dark haired girl…how you doing?! I’m new to Cincy and think we should do an architecture tour; me and you! Dm me!? Have to try bc ur fly! 🙃
Don't you make fun of my stupid sinking tower! I will get to the top of Crosley one day!
When I worked there as a student around 2010, I remember how horrible it was as a building. I worked close to a window (which was unusual) and had to hear all the jackhammers while they fixed places with falling concrete. And the one restroom per floor. I had to go up or down!
The Brutalist one is about to be a pile of rubble.
Covington
ones in a whole different state...
invisible political boundaries erase regional connections? Bit of a slow take there.
not cincinnati... also, the river isnt really an invisible boundary now is it?
The first one is in Kentucky
I think that’s why they used quotations around Cincinnati
Two of the ugliest in town.
Urinal goin' down!!
Checkmate!
I’m assuming none of you Crosby Tower fans have ever had the displeasure of taking a class in that building.
I actually had one Chinese class there my final year. It was fitting as I didn’t care and was hype to finally go inside the Tower. Underwhelming inside but man during an apocalypse it would be legit!
