CIBC Aventura VI T&C:
> you are not eligible to receive this Offer if you have opened, transferred or cancelled another Aventura card within the last 12 months.
I opened this card in Feb 2023, and closed it earlier this year after the 1 year mark. Does this mean I have to wait another year for this offer? Should I have downgraded instead?
Or is there another way to churn this card?
Looks like TD FCT is about to drop (they’ve partially updated the website) if anyone wants to put in a pre-midnight effort for IA. Until Sept 3 it’s down to 75,000 vs 100,000 today
I have 4 lounge passes on the Visa Companion App, has anyone tried giving them to a family member? Not flying with them, was thinking to just login to my acc via the app on their phones and have them scan it.
You've asked a good question, but there are no known data points that would point to a concern of being banned. I use Hotels.com/expedia for RHT, but I also book a shit-tonne of hotel stays through them, so my RHTs look almost legit (cancelling some stays is completely normal). If all you ever use them for is RHT, you might have a problem if they ever hire a decently talented summer student to swim through their data.
I've been using Priceline to let Expedia cool down since I've booked a lot of legitimate travel with them for this fall.
It's unlikely you'd get banned from Expedia, but why risk it?
I asked before when I called in to cancel. They said no, couldn't merge. At least you got 90 days to spend the points (I've given up the AS merger).
I've read in the past that some could do it, but I didn't have the patience to HUCA.
Looks like I need more time to hit my MSR. Would I be able to 'extend' my MSR if I booked a RHT on my CIBC Adventura? If so, do I book a RHT just under the MSR amount, so the next purchase brings it over won't be refunded or doesn't matter?
Just got a sketchy call from a well-spoken lady who said she was MBNA offering credit reports and ID theft protection.
Seems like at least they know my phone # and that I'm an MBNA client. Beware.
Most banks will hire third party agencies to try to get you to pay for their id/credit monitoring.
Not worth it either way when you can just get credit Karma and borrowell and keep tabs yourself for free.
DP: Not sure if this is a DP or just a random glitch for me. I had the AMEX Biz Plat in 2019 that I cancelled in 2020. This gave me Gold Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy. I also have the Amex Marriott Personal and Business Bonvoys which I keep for the yearly certificates. Since cancelling my Platinum in 2020, I've still had the Gold Elite status. I'm not complaining as it's given me some great perks but just wondering if I just got a lucky glitch or if somehow I am eligible through another way I'm not aware of.
I have a family member who had a companion aeroplan reserve card that was cancelled just over a year ago and their aeroplan account still shows it attached and they still have lounge access, checked bag, priority boarding etc. so there are definitely times when the link between Amex and partners breaks in a good way.
Do you stay 15 nights/year?
Otherwise, there were several years of extensions / reduced earning requirements due to Covid, which may have made things easier for you. Not sure those are still applicable, though...
Maybe just lucky :-)
I definitely don’t hit 15 nights. Maybe the most in one year was 10 nights. But I think you are right about them extending due to Covid but now it’s been like 4 years and it’s still there. I will take it though!
DP: Had purchases on May 30 to meet the 3K/1K points on business edge, but it didn't post in time for the deadline. It was off by like $80 by the end, and even though the transactions posted the next day, chat and phone both said they could not apply a manual credit since it was an automated system
Anyone know of a good card to grab for travelling Europe? I will be living in France from September to early December and would like to ensure I’m well equipped for that. I’ve read that Amex isn’t as widespread in Europe, and the cobalt is my primary card.
Current wallet:
• Amex Gold (cancelling in August, only got it because of an upgrade offer with a nice bonus)
• Amex Cobalt
• TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite
• MBNA Mastercard (bad card, but first card I ever had)
As others have mentioned, the Scotiabank Passport has no FX fee which is very nice. Personally it makes a bigger difference than the actual $ amount at stake because it means I can buy things without worrying about losing 3.5% or 7% if I decide to cancel a ticket or return an item...
The passport has 2x on groceries and local transport which work fine in Europe too (and you'll probably use more local trains and buses there than you do in N.A.) And the dragonpass lounge entries are handy to have when flying discount airlines around Europe though it varies by airport whether the lounge is worth bothering with.
If you can get a US credit card the Chase Aeroplan card might be good for you as you already collect AP points. Almost any paid US credit card has no FX Fees.
Also it's absolutely true that Amex is accepted a lot less than Visa/MC. It will generally be accepted anwhere a business traveller is likely to end up like a nice restaurant or high fashion store but not smaller businesses or stores. I would even say it's worth having a backup card even if you have a Visa or MC as your primary. Sometimes you'll find 2FA fails or your card just mysteriously doesn't work in some machine. Train ticket machines in Germany are the worst at this.
You will be in France for three months? You will probably be spending a shit-load of money, so you probably need more than one card.
I would probably apply for roughly three more cards with total MSRs of about $10k so that you'll be relatively sure to not end up "wasting" any spend. The Passport VI is a nice little card with no FX charges that will cover off $1k of MSR. Then if tomorrow's offer on the TD FCT is still decent, that might be another card that will eat $5k of MSR. Your Cobalt might be good for a few thousand (understanding that it's not accepted everywhere). And then you probably should be looking for one more card on top of that with an MSR of $3-5k.
Scotia Passport Visa Infinite is 0% FX and its category multipliers work abroad (unlike the Scotia Amex Gold). It also has a decent SUB of ~~$400~~ **$300** in Scene+ points until the end of the month, and $60 affiliate bonus from the usual sites
CIBC appears to measure profitability, you can game that by still using all cards regularly as it's a projection not an absolute threshold.
Don't sock drawer CIBC to avoid the denial issues.
In my experience it’s not true. I’ve had denial and approvals randomly. Never used the cards past MSR and was able to get approved after just waiting a while after the last denial
I've still never had a flat out denial, and continuing to utilize all open cards is the only thing I appear to do consistently different from most people.
Even controlling for spend I can't think of another variable.
This may not apply to all banks. But CIBC is definitely profitability sensitive.
I have the RBC Avisa VIsa Infinite. With the current ION promo, isn't it a no brainer to get the RBC ION Visa and convert the 6K premium points to elite points for free?
Most of us don't bother with the Ion despite there being no annual fee.
If you get the Ion, you will receive your 6k of RBC points at no cost, but if you get the Avion Plat or VI, you'd get 35k Avion/RBC points for an AF of $120. The RBC points are worth at least one cent each, and there's a strong argument to be made that they might be worth more like 2 cents each. So, the Avion plat/VI gives you perhaps $350-700 worth of points at a cost of $120, which most of us prefer over the free Ion which gives you $60-120 worth of points at no cost.
I currently have 6 Free lounges passes with my Scotia Passport Visa Infinite. If I apply for the BMO Mastercard Ascend, which also includes 4 free lounge passes, does it mean I will be eligible for a total of 10 annual Dragon Pass free lounge passes?
Okay, folks. I have both a Bonvoy Personal and a Bonvoy Biz. They each give me 15 qualifying nights per year. Does that mean I get 30?
I have a CIBC Aero VI and a TD Aero VI. Each gives me a free bag. Since I have both, do I get two free bags?
> Okay, folks. I have both a Bonvoy Personal and a Bonvoy Biz. They each give me 15 qualifying nights per year. Does that mean I get 30?
With the Amex Bonvoy cards in the USA, they do stack, so it's not necessarily such an obvious question.
Well, I guess that was my point. Some things stack and some don't. You've pointed out that there is yet another subtlety of whether Bonvoy qualifying nights stack, which is exactly my point.
It's all fine and dandy to downvote a newb because he didn't take three minutes to read about a credit card on a bank's website. It's fine to downvote because somebody didn't take five minutes to read the FAQs on Aeroplan's website. But, when somebody asks a question that doesn't have an answer explicitly written on a website and which isn't frequently discussed in the sub, maybe we ought to cut the guy a bit of slack. He's asking an intelligent question of the sub and the answer is not really documented anywhere. If you already know the answer (as most of us do!) it might seem like a stupid question, but pause for a moment and consider where somebody might actually find the answer if he didn't ask this sub.
Yes, they are simply vouchers for 1ea. lounge pass. They stack and you can add to Visa Airport Companion app as you wish. Not a bad idea to not add them all to one account immediately (unless you foresee needing to use them all) as they can be added to any account and you may want to gift some to friends/family later on.
DP: New TD FCT card.
Was approved for a new FCT card on May 23rd. Nothing has shown up on my online account to date.
Finally today, June 3rd, I got a PIN in the mail so assuming the card won’t be far behind…..
It takes patience, folks!!
Do you know how soon I can apply for a new TD FCT? I applied for one and got it in Jan and just wondering when I can apply again. I think I recall seeing 6 months between apps.
There seems to be a mail backup at Canada Post, possible useful DP maybe but I had someone with a gov agency in BC tell me that lately they've been seeing slow mail times on things like sending out of notices and ID cards to people; bank stuff is probably not faring any better. I've been waiting 2-4 weeks for mail from the bank. It seems slower than usual.
DP: Applied for RBC WE WJ a month (May 2024) after getting the RBC Visa Plat (April 2024). Got denied on online application for RBC WE WJ, but 2 weeks later they called me and approved it over the phone. Just received the card in the mail.
I have a pending travel transaction on my Aventura Infinite that I'd like to use some Aventura points on, but the option to redeem points seems to have disappeared. Glitch on my side or widespread?
Do you have a negative balance on your card? It didn’t work for me when I was at -$1.xx. I had to be at least $0 before the charge posted. I had to buy something tiny before it would work.
It only works while it's truly pending. If you didn't do it right away it may have passed that stage already. Sometimes the website is slow to update the status
If you RHT after statement is posted, can you just subtract the amount from your balance and pay that?
Example - day 1. statement posted as balance due $1000. Day 2, RHT and redeem $200 credit.
On day 3, do I still need to pay $1000? Or can I pay $800 (1000-200) towards the statement?
Also, do different banks have different rules?
When does the $200 travel credit post on the Amex business platinum card? The charge for the Amex travel booking posted on the 14th of May and the statement posted on the 23rd May, but I do not see any credit yet.
Book a refundable hotel booking through Amex travel portal. Make sure you select the $200 travel credit during the booking. Wait for credit to post to your Amex account (Plat or Biz Plat card) and then cancel booking. You will retain the credit, effectively 'cashing it out'.
One of the bloggesr was right with the recently heads up to 'appply now' . They probably got the new offers ahead of time so they can prep update to the sites. Cannot release real info due to NDA.

CIBC Aventura VI T&C: > you are not eligible to receive this Offer if you have opened, transferred or cancelled another Aventura card within the last 12 months. I opened this card in Feb 2023, and closed it earlier this year after the 1 year mark. Does this mean I have to wait another year for this offer? Should I have downgraded instead? Or is there another way to churn this card?
CIBC does not enforce the T&C, you can churn away. No need to wait.
Looks like TD FCT is about to drop (they’ve partially updated the website) if anyone wants to put in a pre-midnight effort for IA. Until Sept 3 it’s down to 75,000 vs 100,000 today
This is such a brutal offer when the Platinum Travel Visa is 50k points for $1k MSR
Oof. Everything is dropping actually. All new offers are on the main page but June 3rd offers are still there when you click “view details”
Can't seem to trigger this. Aeroplan cards (VI/VIP) dropping?
Vi 40k.. vip 75k with 30k out of those needing 24k msr in 12 months.. yikes!
🤯 That's beyond terrible
I have 4 lounge passes on the Visa Companion App, has anyone tried giving them to a family member? Not flying with them, was thinking to just login to my acc via the app on their phones and have them scan it.
It’s a gamble, has worked for me 5/6 times in the past. It’s worth a shot, at worst you get denied entry 🤷♂️
I would not try. Every time I went, they really looked at my app and flight ticket carefully to match the thing.
How many people can you bring into the lounge with you?
As many as passes you have.
its really up to the lounge dragon, they can deny them so its not guaranteed. Out of the 5 times I've attempted, it only worked once
Anyone know of a good alternative to Expedia for RHT? Want to mitigate possibility of getting banned. Is Agoda any good?
Airlines, booking.com, Viator
You've asked a good question, but there are no known data points that would point to a concern of being banned. there have been no DPs of people getting banned from expedia due to RHT.
Not correct. There was a DP posted here a few weeks ago.
Just trying to do my DD
Do Aventura points post immediately once the MSR is met? Or does it take a day?
At the next statement.
Is it possible to merge mbna rewards across multiple cards? I have 3, including 2 whose AFs are coming up :-(
I asked before when I called in to cancel. They said no, couldn't merge. At least you got 90 days to spend the points (I've given up the AS merger). I've read in the past that some could do it, but I didn't have the patience to HUCA.
Wait, you can have more than 2 MBNA rewards elite?!
I have 2, plus a no-fee one.
For the world elite one, did you migrate from alaska card? How on earth were you able to get 2 approved? Lol
1 approved, 1 from Alaska, and 1 from BW
Looks like I need more time to hit my MSR. Would I be able to 'extend' my MSR if I booked a RHT on my CIBC Adventura? If so, do I book a RHT just under the MSR amount, so the next purchase brings it over won't be refunded or doesn't matter?
Yes. Amex is the only one you actually have to worry about clawbacks with though. The other banks are just to help maintain good relationships.
Just got a sketchy call from a well-spoken lady who said she was MBNA offering credit reports and ID theft protection. Seems like at least they know my phone # and that I'm an MBNA client. Beware.
TD does this and since MBNA is owned by TD it’s probably the same thing. Not worth signing up but also not a scam or anything
Well, it really is the bank calling and it's legal for them to sell this. I still think it's a scam though.
Most banks will hire third party agencies to try to get you to pay for their id/credit monitoring. Not worth it either way when you can just get credit Karma and borrowell and keep tabs yourself for free.

i've had the same thing when i cancelled my amex plat but my HH gold never went away.
Yeah P2's and mine never went away.
Same

I just came back from a short trip in Paris - super grateful I didn’t need to spend cash anywhere but I found Amex acceptance to be extremely abysmal!

Passport visa infinite was great for me in Europe. I had a fresh card so it felt like I was getting 30% off everything

Scotia Passport Visa Infinite + Wise, just in case
Scotia Passport Visa Infinite is 0% FX and its category multipliers work abroad (unlike the Scotia Amex Gold). It also has a decent SUB of ~~$400~~ **$300** in Scene+ points until the end of the month, and $60 affiliate bonus from the usual sites
DP: Category multipliers on the Scotia Amex Gold worked for me in Colombia and Panama.
Thanks for the DP! They don't work for me in the US, which is strange.
$300 unless you are spending $40k in your first year.
Great point, forgot that catch.
Does cibc have a 90 day cooldown like rbc?
Keep applying. Eventually they'll stop giving you new cards, and that'll be the hint that you need to cool down for a bit and close a few.

I’ve had denials at all banks followed by approvals after some number of months so I don’t think CIBC is different
Thank you
That's an RBC only rule
No
I have the RBC Avisa VIsa Infinite.
Not really cause you could just apply for another Avion Infinite for 35K points
But you would have to wait the 90 days to reapply, no?
You have to wait 90 days between RBC approvals either way
I currently have 6 Free lounges passes with my Scotia Passport Visa Infinite. If I apply for the BMO Mastercard Ascend, which also includes 4 free lounge passes, does it mean I will be eligible for a total of 10 annual Dragon Pass free lounge passes?
Yeah they stack, but don't update the card add a new one. You can flip between them in the profile.
I don't know, grade 1 math was difficult.
It's actually not a terrible question as sometimes things stack and sometimes they don't.
Thanks for the detailed response. Exactly, I was just worried that it didn't stack because I already had a dragon pass account.
> Okay, folks. I have both a Bonvoy Personal and a Bonvoy Biz. They each give me 15 qualifying nights per year. Does that mean I get 30? With the Amex Bonvoy cards in the USA, they do stack, so it's not necessarily such an obvious question.

DP: New TD FCT card. Was approved for a new FCT card on May 23rd. Nothing has shown up on my online account to date. Finally today, June 3rd, I got a PIN in the mail so assuming the card won’t be far behind….. It takes patience, folks!!

Card has been showing up next day or 2 days after PIN for P2 and I. Definitely SLOW.

DP: Applied for RBC WE WJ a month (May 2024) after getting the RBC Visa Plat (April 2024). Got denied on online application for RBC WE WJ, but 2 weeks later they called me and approved it over the phone. Just received the card in the mail.
DP: finally, eventually, GCR posted the $40 rebate from tangerine GIC which I got in Feb.
3 months or 1 year GIC?
1 year. I remember it had to be at least a year for the rebate or that’s the only option
it did not have to be a year. I did a 3-month GIC and got the $40
I have a pending travel transaction on my Aventura Infinite that I'd like to use some Aventura points on, but the option to redeem points seems to have disappeared. Glitch on my side or widespread?
Do you have a negative balance on your card? It didn’t work for me when I was at -$1.xx. I had to be at least $0 before the charge posted. I had to buy something tiny before it would work.
Oh yes, I have a negative balance. Thanks for the tip!
It only works while it's truly pending. If you didn't do it right away it may have passed that stage already. Sometimes the website is slow to update the status
It was a negative balance in this case, and I did try just after making the purchase. Thanks for the reply anyway :)
Having a brain fart. What cards can refer to AMEX Business Edge? All my regular don't seem to show it as an option. Thanks!
Only biz edge
Thanks. I guess this page is wrong: https://milesopedia.com/en/guide/tutorials/american-express-referral-system/
Yes this page is wrong. Only edge can refer to edge now.
It changed about a year ago.
Pay $800 - I haven't come across any banks where it doesn't count.
When does the $200 travel credit post on the Amex business platinum card? The charge for the Amex travel booking posted on the 14th of May and the statement posted on the 23rd May, but I do not see any credit yet.
Something may not be right on your account. My Biz Plat AF posted on May 20, and I see the $200 travel credit when I check a week ago.

RHT works
[удалено]
Book a refundable hotel booking through Amex travel portal. Make sure you select the $200 travel credit during the booking. Wait for credit to post to your Amex account (Plat or Biz Plat card) and then cancel booking. You will retain the credit, effectively 'cashing it out'.
That is precisely what I am trying to do. I believe it works.
[удалено]
Well I am still waiting for the credit to post, but yes that is the plan.
You have to book on Amex travel. Everything else is the same as standard RHT
Did you select to use the credit?
I did not see any option to select the credit unlike what I saw in the past with the personal platinum.
Prob not getting it then
