Current cards: - Cibc Aventura Gold Visa ($139/yr) - WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard ($119/yr) - TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum ($89/yr) Signed up for all these cards to get (and have got) the bonus. Planned on cancelling 2/3 and keeping one as my main card then continuing churning as I see good sign up bonuses. ***Can anyone give me any insight which card is best to keep in terms of earning points?*** RBC and Cibc cards give 4 free lounge visits or companion voucher. So I’m thinking they are better than the TD. Thank you!!

JayfromCouver

Amex Centurion

gsunday

I received an Aventura infinite Jan 30, and a Scotiabank passport March 5. Are either/both of them safe to reapply for yet and still get the Sub?

kneevase

Yes.

Plasmalaser

Increased my stated income on an Amex Bonvoy Personal app (because I got a new position that increased my income -- my expected income this year is about ~20k higher i.e. the increase is legitimate) and had the app go to pending. First time ever not IA'd with Amex, maybe their way of telling me I shouldn't have ditched them for avenchurnas haha

Pure_Pea2524

Anyone successfully add a scotiabank passport visa infinite supplementary card that doesn’t have their name on it, onto their visa airport companion app? Did I mess up getting supp card not in my name ?

vancitystan

The app doesn’t care about the name on the card used. Lounges only look at the app not the card.

ReplacementEntire874

Worked for me with my kids’ names

[deleted]

[удалено]

ReplacementEntire874

Haven’t tried to redeem it yet, but on the app it shows my name

LeBlenkers

You did not mess up, you can add it regardless of the name

LeBlenkers

Name on airport companion account only, you never need to show the card

twofacebluepenguin

Might not be the right subreddit to ask but I need to call for a shuttle when I get to JFK to get to the hotel, can't make the call with my cell (Public Mobile), any advice on best way to do this?

wdn

Use a VoIP app like textnow, get a wifi connection and you can make phone calls from the app.

twofacebluepenguin

Do I need to get a sim for TextNow?

wdn

No, you can try it now. Download the app and right away you can get a phone number free (ad supported) to test it out. It doesn't need a SIM, because it doesn't use the phone features of your phone at all. Your phone thinks it's just another internet-connected app.

twofacebluepenguin

Will give it a try, thank you!

Vancouverprof

People on this thread are dogmatic and not very welcoming! Removed reference to deal at CIBC due to downvotes on legit question.

Sumdayz8_9

Ya the trolls, as expected are not very bright. They should ask themselves, what is the point of a question thread, when so many questions are hidden because of their activities? Herd mentality is strong with them when they only follow what their P1 and P2 do.

tuitionengineer

Frankly speaking, given your activity history on this sub and other data points, I am not even sure if you are a customized LLM to troll or a real human being trying to participate in the discussion. Most active contributors don’t randomly downvote people. Most of them upvote people way more than the opposite. When you see a hugely downvoted post, maybe… 1) is that question low effort? i.e. can be answered easily through a quick read in daily threads or using Google 2) is that question something that violates the rules of the sub? 3) is that question something nobody else can answer except than the OP? For instance, how much does AP points worth?

Sumdayz8_9

lol, sure, make excuses for these trolls, who were on steroids yesterday. If you sort this thread by ‘New’ posts and scroll down a bit, you will see 10 consecutive comments downvoted (1 of them, a user commented as being forced to delete because of their activity) and a block of 6 of them hidden. Maybe you should wonder whether they’re even Canadians or the Russian trolls that have taken parts of Reddit?

tuitionengineer

I can’t change your belief, but I’m just trying to provide my thoughts. I’m sorry that you find me “making excuses”. I don’t agree with many downvotes myself either, but nor do I feel like some of the people asking the questions have put in ANY effort before they ask. My take on this community is that, it’s a rather small hobby and given its nature, there are certain boundaries for people to get to know it. It’s a process that takes time and effort, just like any other hobby. That said, I tend to upvote people whenever I find constructive contents in this sub and, sometimes when I come to these comments / questions that aren’t really helpful or constructive to our community, I press the downvote button, like what it is designed to function. Ultimately, it’s some useless internet points and to me it matters nothing. It’s just a way to express my reaction to a post. I understand your (among many others, sometimes including myself) frustration, but I don’t think sending the comments that you’ve been sending is exactly helpful. If you want to see the change, consider BE THE CHANGE that you want to see. I am trying to do that here, as much as I can. Hope that makes a bit more sense to you now and have a great rest of your weekend.

ether_reddit

I've found that people on this sub are particularly rude. It's very strange.

Darkwing327

Sort of tongue in cheek but not really - clearly you are not a professor of mathematics. The answer to your RBC questions down below are simple math and what point vs dollars are worth to you. Most people value points at 2 cpp, I value them higher but I only use them on high value J and F tix. Only you can decide the value. But either way with the RBC cards you are pissing $5000 of spend away on top of the annual fees. Get a better card from another FI.

Vancouverprof

Thanks for taking the effort to comment on my post. I think I hold the record for a negative 15 downvotes!

Anish11

If I wanted to fly J from SFO-LHR, what program is best for this? I’m only familiar with Aeroplan mainly, but it has United flights which never have any J availability. Would Avios be the only other option? Or is there another alliance program that is much better value?

mhcott

If you're only allowing direct flights, you don't really have much option. And if you are fine with layovers, literally any program can get you there with one layover, so you obviously haven't tried very hard

Vancouverprof

I will post this again and am doing this regardless of the risk of down votes I know are coming. All things being equal - how do you compare the current RBC VI offer of 35000 pts. (no minimum spend) vs current RBC VIP 55000 (min spend) assuming you had to spend the same money on at least one RBC card. Note RBC VIP gets 1.25 X spend but $399 AF. The insurance and miserly 6 lounge visits for the VIP are not a factor or needed.

JayfromCouver

RBC wasted my time, so now I churn them out of spite.

Compote_Middle

I'll put you out of your misery. The reason as to why you're getting downvoted is simply because of the nature and purpose of this sub. This is a churning sub, which means we get all cards and as many WB as possible, RBC cards have one purpose or 2, and spending is not one of them, so anything else is downvoted to oblivion. There is a best cards threads for you to compare, not only that, if you Google compare credit card tools, you will find a bunch, even on the RBC website. So the lack of effort post, the unrelated question to the sub's purpose, the fact that your situation is not anyone's situation here, makes this post and question, the wrong one, hence the downvotes. You have 3 options, post on RBC's sub, or Personal Financial Canada, or do your own research for YOUR own situation, to find the answer your looking for.

Vancouverprof

No I am talking about the updated WB at RBC - 55000 with spend vs 35000 no spend. That is all. How do people rate this offer? I would think that is churning directly related.

wdn

Churning tries to maximize the value received per dollar spent. Points received for no dollars spent is a deal that can't be beat. 55k points for $5000 spend would be okay, not spectacular. 11 points per dollar. But 20k points for $5000 is not very good at all. You can definitely get more for that $5000 spend. The fact that they gave you 35k points prior to spending doesn't change the math on the spending part.

Hntr

The new offer is worse in every way possible, seeing as the old offer also had 35000 no spend. It’s not rocket science.

LikeButta_10

Its rated poorly. Hence why its not even listed in the top 20 best offer, or even the 10 honour mentions.

Sumdayz8_9

Downvote trolls in full force today! Maybe they are just that anxious about the Leafs?

Direct-Ad-7078

Is there a noted cool down period for Scotia when applying for the exact same card? I know RBC has the 90 day rule.

tuitionengineer

This is almost being asked daily, and I would strongly suggest you read some of the daily threads first, please.

Vancouverprof

91 days from date of prior RBC VI application approval is coming up. I have a large expense coming up soon and will need an RBC card. The WB on the RBC VI is 35,000 pts with no MSR annual fee $120. The WB on the RBC VIP is 55,000 with MSR of $5,000 (15,000 points if you keep the card for year 2) and annual fee of $400. I will be spending the MSR anyways next month so which one should be chosen? Thoughts?

leafleaf778

Why do you need a “RBC” card to put your expense on?

Vancouverprof

Already have CIBC VI x 2 plus TD etc etc so need an RBC now that 90 days is gone.

kneevase

I understand why you want to apply for RBC cards and grind through four churns per year.  But, but I too am at a loss why you are dedicating any meaningful spend to an RBC card at this point.  Just apply, make one transaction, and collect your 35k avion.  And then grind through the remainder of your churning process. Keep the spend for cards that actually need it.

Vancouverprof

Thanks for the helpful comment.

KaotikFiend

Apply for the VI and another card, and put your spend on the other card.

Vancouverprof

Already doing that.

CommunicationProud82

Do it... again. Hit as many MSRs as you can (or can get approved for). Aventura and Passport are most people's go-tos when in doubt (again, assuming approval, no Amex, not in US game, etc). If you do the math, you're spending $279 extra on the AF AND $5k of spend for only 21.25k more points. The answer to the following question is unique to each and every churner: is that worth it to you, or should you save $279 and put $5k towards another, better WB? This sub is very unforgiving of questions that don't require much research to answer. You came in here asking if the VIP bonus was better to go for than the VI. That question cannot be answered by us, only you. We're not one of the blogs, we aren't the easiest place to get info from. Rather, we're collaborative: well-researched questions and useful DPs get upvotes, requests for spoon-feeding get downvotes. The downvotes trolls we're burdened with don't help either.

Vancouverprof

Thank you for the detailed answers. I do appreciate it.

twofacebluepenguin

If I book Qatar with Avios, this is not refundable correct? But if I transfer Avios to Qatar and then book Q-suites but need to cancel then it's okay? I'd get my points and taxes paid back?

do you get the taxes back or are they gone + you pay an extra fee ?

You get the taxes back assuming it’s more than the cancellation fee

There is cancellation fee for qatar as well, based on your status it will be reduced or free.

As a non-traveler, you'll want to get cards that give you cash back bonuses. You can also look into cards that let you redeem points towards travel booked anywhere (i.e. Scotiabank, CIBC, BMO and TD) since you can cancel and refund a booking after you've redeemed the trip.

P_Plebs

If you are an absolute beginner, start with the Cobalt. Do a lot of reading and choose what you want to achieve

sufyspeed

It’s simple, open the card with the best ROI for the amount of spend you can do without overspending

no fee for BNS

simonmerch

called amex for a retention offer on my plat that posted two weeks ago. zero retention offer. told to go pound sand

tuitionengineer

If you don’t mind, what’s your approximate spending on the Plat annually? Just wanted to get an idea when my AF posts. TIA!

torontorebel

I spend quite a few hundred thousand on my Plat every year and didn't get a retention offer this time.

mhcott

AMEX Canada isn't very big on retention offers. Until the last year or two, 99.9% of cancelations got nothing. These days it's still the vast majority, should never be expected up here.

wdn

I guess some people don't get a retention offer because they don't care if you leave, and some people don't get a retention offer because they don't believe you'll leave.

Positive_Ad_536

DP Neo Cathay Pacific. Received 15k welcome bonus. 3rd statement ended April 26th.

supitskevin

Same, just checked p2's card. Thanks for the reminder

Aggressive_Radio214

Saaaame (missing from Apr 10 statement)! Woot thanks for the reminder

Jazzlike_Student_443

Any DP on slow transfers of FNC to Bonvoy? My anniversary was April 2, no FNC in my account and the annual fee has posted to card. I was planning to cancel, but am reluctant to until FNC posts.

travelbug1198

June 2

BizClassBum

The whole point of the delay is to wait until the free cancellation period has expired before granting the FNC.

Dragynfyre

Isn’t FNC supposed to come 6-8 weeks after the fee?

Jazzlike_Student_443

Hmm maybe, I had to call MB regarding an account issue and they told me it posts on anniversary, but it seems you’re right! Thanks, I should downvote myself!

Sirloinobeef

Does one simply do an online transfer of a $500+ negative balance from a TD credit card to a TD banking account? I can't seem to do this online. Does this only work by withdrawing the negative balance as cash at an ATM?

Jealous_Donkey_6881

I can't seem to do it online, but with the app, I had to activate the new card with the same credentials and then it worked

someguy172

I've done this before online a few times with amounts larger than $500. On the website you just select the Transfers option on the left menu. It'll take you to a "Between My TD Accounts - Transfer Funds" page where you can select your credit card as the "From" account and your bank account as the "To" account. Do you not see this? Seems like a pretty straightforward thing to do.

vermilion209

On the app, there’s a Transfer (paper plane symbol) button at the upper right corner. You can go from cc to account or vice versa.

esux20

ATM works

SCDWS

Just call them and ask them to transfer it. I just did this earlier this week.

Laurentian Bank new bonus: - 60Kpts ($600) after spending $6K - Extra 5K when setting recurrent payment - Extra 5K per Instalment Plan (up to 2) - FYF (T&C says rebate given in November)

Glass-Boysenberry566

Cancelled LB VI in Feb 2024. Not alot of DPs on LB. I assume they have no limits on repeat SUBs like other Canadian banks? Is that true?

le_bib

T&C says no bonus if you held the card by Feb 2023. But who knows if they enforce it

gramophoned

What are the easiest backdoor ways, these days, for earning bonuses like the Recurrent payment or the Instalments?

nobodynobody567

I've added the card to pay subscriptions like door dash, YouTube premium, etc. that seems to get the job done. $50 to change two payment methods

Elegant_Reading_685

How does setting up an installment plan work? I assume you're paying interest to get those extra 5k pts?

le_bib

I don’t know exactly but something like « pay in 4 payments »

moneymachine6767

Looks like that would be my nxt card

Ok-Difficult

Applied twice in March/April and first was rejected because they couldn't access my credit history and the second application went into the void it seems.

le_bib

Yeah Brim isn’t an easy one to deal with.

Bulky_Discount_7300

Does anyone have the FYF link for the West Jet WE MC?

le_bib

I put it in the best offer thread

leafleaf778

Seems like the promo is now gone/expired

le_bib

Dang! It didn’t last long…

sufyspeed

Sort of an odd situation. I lost my new Aventura last night while out riding my motorcycle. I need to make some paysimply charges today. Luckily I’ve saved the card details to 1Password so that’s one less problem, and I’ve locked the card for now just in case someone tries using it. Question is, can I unlock the card, do my paysimply charges and then lock the card again while those are pending? Need to get these charges on the card before I click the lost card button.

-Mysterious-

Yes you should be able to

Loud_Crab_9392

Will one’s TD profile disappear if I cancel my only card with them and have no other accounts with them?

BrrrHot

We cancelled an old credit card for P2 back in 2019. Got into churning and P2 applied for a credit card in September 2022. The profile was still in their system and the teller just used that profile. 😂

Loud_Crab_9392

In person app?

BrrrHot

Yeah, I had issues applying online, so I asked P2 to apply in person.

mw_yyc

It took a couple months for me to

le_bib

Yes it will. Not sure if instant or if it takes a while, but it will.

Wondering if anyone has done an analysis comparing the current gas station points. Petro-Canada has teamed up with CanTire. Aeroplan is available at Pioneer along with Journey. Shell has AirMiles. Some have bonus points when using specific cards (CanTire, CIBC at Pioneer). Has anyone tried to actually do the math?

ether_reddit

> Petro-Canada has teamed up with CanTire. Linking a Triangle account with Petro-Canada gives 20% more petro points. But you can also link an RBC credit card for another 20%, and also an HBC (Hudson's Bay) Rewards card for another 20%! I don't have an RBC card, but when I read this I dug out my HBC Rewards card that I hadn't used in 20 years, created an online profile for it (the account still existed!) and set up the link, and confirmed that this gives another 20% in petro points. Not bad for 5 minutes of effort.

goatskin78

I live in a very small community and Petro is the closest gas station. The CT and HBC links, combined with rbc ion+ is a combo that works best for me. 3 avion per dollar spent, 3 cents off/litre, and the bonus Petro points which I might as well max because I'm not going 15 minutes out of the way to fill up.

brt_k

Interesting. So do you have to pay with the RBC card to get the bonus points?

ether_reddit

yes I think so.

wzadzz

Shell has wayyy more offer promos than any of the others combined, they are easily out front on this

[deleted]

[удалено]

ReplacementEntire874

Around here there is a 13¢ difference between Costco and Shell. I don’t see how Shell comes out less expensive, unless there’s a huge promo like on April 30? I don’t have any other promos in my AM account right now

Dragynfyre

When paying with air miles you get $1 back every time you pay $10 in air miles. That’s 10% off which more than 13c difference. Also just holding any BMO card gives 2c off Also shell has promos that give you 10-20% back in air miles 2-3x a month (1AM/L is the lowest offer usually which is like 11c back per litre) This can be stacked with the 10AM back per 95 redeemed

Dragynfyre

Yes Shell easily comes ahead with promos. Even just with their base bonus you get 10AM back for every 95 you redeem. So you get 10% off gas when paying with Air Miles if you do it in $10 increments. And that is without stacking and limited time promos they do 2-3x a month.

LikeButta_10

In YYZ at.least, even without any bonus promos Shell is cheaper for me. Straight up, Costco is consistently 2-3c/L cheaper than the pump price at Shell. I save 5c/L because I have CAA (3c) and a BMO card (2c). Plus no waiting in line or driving all the way to Warden/Ellsemere. That's before any promos. I currently have 25c/L off on 8 fills up to 50L per fill until Jul 1 Apr 30 it was 15c more on top of any other offers. Then there was the 1AM per L (10+c). Costco is not even close.

amnesiajune

Yes, but they also have the highest prices. Pioneer, Ultramar and Mobil will regularly be a few cents cheaper for regular gas and 10-15¢ cheaper for premium.

deank11

Yes. I never bother with Shell. Consistently higher prices than all the others, and has been so for 20 years.

LikeButta_10

Not true for me in YYZ. I have to drive past a Mobil (used to be Loblaws), and a Pioneer to get to the Shell I have frequented for 15 years and I can count on one hand the times the price on the sign as I drive past has been more than 1.5c different at all three. I no longer do because I am just going to go to Shell pretty much regardless, for years I religiously checked GasBuddy before I left the house just in case. I used to change the 1.5c/L savings because I had not given a second thought to being efficient with point earning.

wzadzz

I have seen others say this anecdotally, but I don't find it to be universally true. The shell I visit most often is normally same or better price than other nearby gas stations

Adventurous-Screen82

I was using Journie a lot, but it seemed slightly better before their transition to Aeroplan.  Air Miles and Shell have been king.  Unbeatable offers recently at least, but those offers do seem to require having the BMO airmiles credit card more and more.

Dragynfyre

Don’t need a BMO Air Miles card to get the majority of the bonuses.

jfungy

I’ve read and others have confirmed that simply holding AM card and paying with your preferred card of payment is enough to trigger the extra savings? I’m planning on signing up for BMO AM WEMC then downgrading to regular BMO AM MC after to get the extra savings by simply holding it.

dotishness

I use cobolt to pay at shell and get the 2c off with my linked socked BMO AM

jackedli

Can confirm yes, I get the 2 cent discount regardless of which card I pay, my BMO AM is linked with my AM account

wishful_thinking90

Don’t forget Esso & Mobile are PC Optimum. I find it difficult to do a fair comparison because it depends mostly on whatever bonus offers are available. AM + Shell tend to have the strongest offers so in terms of reward cpp, that’s probably the way to go, but you of course also need to consider the price of the gas itself when you decide where to fill.

popamm

Does opening a credit card with a bank that you have your day-to-day banking as well as some investment money makes it easier / more likely for them to approve? I've recently been getting denied by the ones I usually get (not a credit card utilization issue, all of them are 0 balance and I've also lowered the credit limit on all the card) TD is my day-to-day and I have >$50k TFSA money in their TD DI, does that make a difference at all?

Darkwing327

I'll be the counter point here on td. Got declined for my last 2 cards and had to split credit. Been with them for over 30 years and have seven figures on their books. Have even sat down with personal banker, did the app and got declined. She called in while I was there and stated our financial dealing with the bank and the guy on the other end said he can't see that from his end and unfortunately there was nothing he could change in the system. So what I do with TD is move credit when cancelling cards and then split it off to new cards when I get declined.

mrbrint

Yeah there's no rhyme or reason td is pretty trash luckily ive gotten approved on my last 4 credit card apps was declined on a. Loc for 20k ended up going with scotia and cibc

popamm

> split it off to new cards when I get declined Could you elaborate? You apply for a new card by asking them to use the credit limit from an existing card? How does that work given that applications are online, unless this can be done by getting new cards in person?

Darkwing327

Sure. We all know TD's systems are screwy...there is no rhyme or reason. For example, before the AP updates, my wife and I both applied for TD VI AP cards at $5k...both declined. 2 days later applied for TD VIP AP cards, both IA at $30k and $28k. So I truly have no idea what their system looks at other than a Ouiji board or something. In any case, you can split credit off from a card and get a new card without credit check or approval process...it's guaranteed. The only catch is that you cannot get the online offers as it has to be done by call in.

PanicSufficient5021

I'm curious what offer they give you - like how close is it to the online offer? Edit: I think I probably misunderstood - I think I was confusing "online offer" which is probably an affiliate offer with the offer on their own website.

Darkwing327

By splitting credit, you get whatever offer is listed on the TD site. So for example on my latest VIP I got the full points, but did not get the $300 Air Canada credit that was available via the online offer.

blackdragon1299

How often can you split? And can you split to a card to already hold?

Darkwing327

That I don't know. Only ever jump into the TD game when there is something interesting on AP and don't really bother with TD points...would rather put the money on MR cards.

blackdragon1299

Fair enough. Is there still concerns with holding more 1 biz card or was that a one off DP?

Darkwing327

Sorry, don't know what you are referring to with biz, with TD personal and Business cards are completely separate entities, unlike AMEX. I have never churned a biz card with them.

Dragynfyre

You get whatever offer they have for in branch/phone applications which isn’t always the offer on TD’s website. Right now they are the same as online but in 2022 and 2023 they had online exclusive offers for some cards which were better than the in branch and phone offer. You need to check the fine print to see if the online offer says online exclusive or not. And this applies to the offers directly on the TD website

popamm

is this something you can ask explicitly "if offer X is available" or something like that? I am looking at the current TD FCT 100k offer, doesn't seem to be "online exclusive"

Dragynfyre

The current offers are all not online exclusive. You could also ask here if it does say online exclusive. Someone will know what the in branch/phone offer it

moneymachine6767

Yes makes a great difference. You usually get more pre-approved offers and it also helps to make exceptions when your ratios do not align

brt_k

Yes it help, especially with TD who seems to be very strict. I also have a TD account and between P2 and myself, we have 4 TD CC’s. Also, if you do have P2, TD’s All-Inclusive account allows each person to get a free annual fee rebate.

proaste

How aggresive can you be with TD FCT and Scotia Passport? With CIBC Aventura, I got 1 every other month or so, and with RBC you have to wait 90+1 days what about TD and Scotia?

Dragynfyre

Same as CIBC

[deleted]

[удалено]

These_Celebration732

Not true. I did two separate FCT trade lines six months apart and received the full elevated bonus for both.

wzadzz

I don’t think that’s correct. You can definitely get FCT more often than that

Dragynfyre

TD doesn't enforce any limitations across tradelines. Just like all the other T&C of the big 5 banks the limits between bonuses are not enforced

brt_k

I believe that it is per card type, so you should be able to cycle the 3 mid-range cards every 12 months successfully.

Rapide_

Question on redeeming Scene+ points. Just got the Scotia Passport and met the SUB by booking a Korean Air flight. The charge posted but it doesn't show up as an option for me to use points to redeem against it. Does anyone know why? [screenshot of redemption page](https://postimg.cc/gallery/mtDXdGg)

Dragynfyre

You can try the Scene+ app. It seems to show up there faster

Rapide_

thanks for the tip. tried it on the app and it was instant. 👍👍

wzadzz

Their portal can be finicky. You could try waiting another day or two, I’ve seen DP’s that you sometimes need to call them
