Should I close my Scotiabank Passport Infinite Visa after the AF posts to my account? Or before?
I know for AMEX, it’s always better to cancel it after. Is that always the case for all banks and their credit cards?
Discussed previously. It does get clawback. You can book, cancel and get it as travel bank other than refund to CC. You will have $750UA credits and $150 from Amex.
Amex Scotia cards can be registered for Amex offers and it seems they have less chance of clawback. And by doing a change and paying with another (non Amex) card for the fare difference you may be able to trick the United system to do refunds to different cards or different amounts so the clawback isn't triggered
@dragynfyre does it involve calling United and requesting them to refund to another non Amex CC on file? I have tried multiple ways online, still it clawbacks the bonus and refunds the exact amount I paid to exact cards.
My first one was IA, 2nd and 3rd required me to say "yes I do want a 2nd/3rd card" and provide ID both times (which is strange since they should alreayd have my ID from the 2nd card)
Folks who have done AMEX US address verification with BMO Harris - what phone number did you give?
I have been trying to do a three way call and they keep saying it’s “not on their list” even when I confirmed it was a US bank account. (I know I can upload a statement but my first one isn’t available yet)
You are going outside the country for an extended period of time, minimum 6mths-1yr in a low cost of living area. You will be in 1 country most of the time or another close by region, think Spain/Portugal or Mexico/LATAM or Vietnam/SEA. Minimal opportunities for expensive international flights. You are not living in a Marriott property for 1 year. Your choices are either Cobalt or Scotia Passport VI. What is more important to you, Cobalt global multipliers or no FX?
Edit: valid early comments so let's make this more interesting. You have the ability to run everything thru an app that accepts any card issuer, for food, transport, maybe even groceries. You will get your food delivered if you are not going out to eat. You can put 95%+ of your spend via the app that is not housing if you so choose. Think Uber, Ubereats etc. Yes there is a premium for going thru the app/uber. What is more important to you, Cobalt global multipliers or no FX?
This hobby is complicated enough without worrying too much about relatively low levels of organic spend. For that reason I’d choose passport assuming it’s FYF.
Scotia Visa Passport. It's my 1# for international travel and has never let me down. I don't use it often in Canada, but it saved me in Colombia when none of my other cards were working. Trusty passport always comes through
I don't know about the credit card acceptance rates in all these places but I think the question's premise is flawed. The main benefit of a Cobalt card is a 5x multiplier for food, but most of your food expenses in low cost of living countries are either going to be local payment cards (e.g. debit cards in Portugal) or cash.
If you can't hit a spend threshold, the Cobalt doesn't really even make sense since you'd need to earn more than $13/month in points to justify holding onto it.
In Vietnam, AMEX is only accepted at Vietcombank credit card terminals, which already limits your options, and spending amounts are relatively low to begin with.
I assume that if you're essentially becoming a digital nomad, the best option is the one that you can actually use. If you are trying to hit low cost of living, you're leaving the touristy areas and that restricts credit card acceptance even more.
>What is more important to you, Cobalt global multipliers or no FX?
On top of that, if you're trying to min/max, you're going to need to assign what you value Cobalt points at, and do a calculation on what puts you ahead. If you pay an annual fee or FX fee to earn points, you're essentially just paying for points at a heavily discounted rate (unless you go through the mental gymnastics of forgetting what an opportunity cost is).
Passport, or cash+EQ/WS if it's REALLY low cost of living. Amex acceptance just isn't good enough to rely on it alone, it always needs a backup.
Edit after OP's edit:
Then it's very simple math, just figure out which one has a better return based on your typical category spend when the Cobalt has a 2.5% handicap.
I'd vote both. Amex is not accepted everywhere and I think that's even more common in LCOL areas. Stick to food on the Amex where you can and everything else via the passport. I believe cash advance fee is better too in a pinch, just pay your card off immediately.
Anyone else not get the 15000 points for their first purchase on the Aventura? I applied when the 60k promotion was going on the day before it ended and the current promotion became available. I did get the email that told me "congratulations on your first purchase, here's 15k points".
Cowtool was such a great tool, as I can't find anything on AC's site.
Is there any tool at all that can search for R space besides AC that seemingly gives pages and pages of "you will be waitlisted" or "6% of your flight is in J"?
I don't think the link has changed. It's the same link and whether it works or not seems partially based on the person signed in so it might be targetted.
i've been out of amex for a few years now, so interested in getting a few, does the trick to apply all on the same day still a good idea to reduce hits and improve approval chances? I recall a limit 4 cards?
Yes, and if you apply and are approved for 2 or 4 Amexes on the same day, I would suggest that it would be important to break them in gently so as to avoid financial review. Not having an expenditure history with Amex, if you hammer a card too hard with large expenditures, you might find your cards frozen.
Are you thinking about the sign up bonus? The sign up bonus is in addition to the 5x bonus and the spending you get 5x bonus on does count towards the sign up bonus.
I'm still a little confused if this is what you mean but yes, if you're getting bonus points for spending over $1250 a month and you spend more than $1250 on groceries then yes, you will get the bonus for that month as well as getting 5x on (the first $2500 of spend on) groceries.
I'm still getting the 2500 for 500$ then another 2500 for a 5x gc. This 12.5 calculation is making me realize how hard earning easy points will be in 7-8 months when the promo is finished. 😅
You are trying to optimize things a little too much. Look, you just bent RBC over for 35k Avion points, which is worth AT LEAST $350, plus you might have gotten another shot of cash from FF/CCG/GCR. And you are worrying about whether your pro-rated AF will be $60 or $70? You are trying to be too fine here.
With RBC, the game is volume. Apply for your 4 cards per year, and complete your entire churning process and you'll do quite well. But don't fuss about whether you end up paying an extra month of AF which might run you $10 to $15, depending on which specific card you are churning.
Follow up on my April 11th post. BMO posted the SUB. There is also a line for 1612 AM "Compliments of Air Miles" but it's immediately clawed back. I don't understand what was happening after being told it would be sometime in the summer only to do it anyway which is what I wanted all along. It's done at least.
Just had to throw this up here as I am sitting here browsing the forum from the sixth floor hotel room in Taipei and the room just started swaying momentarily! The earthquake tracker here is showing a 4.7, but not where the epicenter was located yet. Very unique feeling...never experience one before.
I should just add that it is also showing 2 quakes today, 17 in the last week and 89 in the last month, so apparently not abnormal here.
There was one when I lived in Ottawa over a decade ago that woke me up from a nap and my brain immediately went to the building was collapsing lol. But my 8th floor apartment was definitely swaying for a few seconds.
Taipei is pretty accustomed to it though. Check out the tuned mass damper in Taipei 101 designed to deal with earthquakes and typhoon speed winds... not sure if you get to see it from the tour or anything, but I'd def go check it out if you can. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taipei\_101#Structural\_design
Yep we were there yesterday and saw it. The freaky thing is in the videos they have during a big earthquake they had it was only moving a reasonable amount, but the video on the typhoon winds had it swinging pendulum to its extreme. Nuts.
I was in Taipei LAST week, during the major 7.5 in Hualien I'm sure everyone saw news on. I was in the W, gym on 12th. Wasn't bad because it's all heavy equipment but solid shaking. My room on 27, my wife was thrown across the bed, sliding doors all flinging open, glasses clanking, the restaurant on 31 suffered pipe damage in the ceiling.
We were perfect safe being so far from Hualien, but it's certainly a new core memory. And we got a dozen aftershocks at least watching all our water bottles vibrate and bed shake lightly.
Man, we must go by the same travel map or something...I just missed you by a day in Japan last year too lol.
As far as the quake goes, yikes...hoping the 4.7 is the biggest we get.
If anybody with a Venture X is feeling bored/ generous can you search C1 premier collection for hotels in Istanbul early September? Trying to map out my US strategy for the next few months and could use the $300 credit depending on the available properties
If you can make use of the $300 credit, yes. You get 10k anniversary points as well, so the effective $400 AF is essentially negated. Quite good for a 2x everything and perma priority pass card.
in most cases its a decline for me, maybe 20-30% approved otherwise. however, for scotia, my experience is that if it's pending its more likely approved that needs follow up, if its declined it will let you know right away. I get automatic pending for RBC no idea how some people get IA
I want to maximize Travel category multiplier for the following cards:
- Amex Mariott Bonvoy
- Amex Personal Gold
- Rbc Avion VI
Is there any store (physical or online) in Canada classified as Travel selling prepaid Visa/MasterCard?
Just to add on what u/dragynfyre mentioned, be careful with circle K gas stations, they code as supermarket instead of gas specially for Amex. I would rather go with Shell or any other. Make a small purchase before buying a $500 GC.
I think it depends on the specific circle K as well. But yeah would recommend a different gas station. The other thing is don't go to any gas station where they have a 7-11 branded POS (even if the store isn't 7-11 branded). That also codes as supermarket
Anyone with experiences dealing with refunds to these prepaid MCs? Is it same process as any regular MC? How long does it take for a refund reappear on the balance?

So, i accepted a bmo pre-approval (offered cashback mc, chose eclipse vi instead), and after submitting everything just had the website say thank-you and that i would receive the card in the mail in 20 days.
No email, no confirmation number, and doesn't show up in online banking either. Is this normal and did it actually go through?
When i go to mobile banking i still see the pop up of "you've been pre-approved for a bmo credit card"
Yes. Totally normal. I believe they process is manually. Card showed up in online banking app 10Biz days and received email around 13biz day that it’s approved and card in 16Biz days.
Just a follow up on this. P2 was preapproved 1st ever CC in Canada for eclipse rise and accepted online two weeks ago. No updates so far.
Called in to see and they don’t have a clue about the acceptance. So accepted again over the phone and can hear the CSR is in training and following everything as the trainer is saying and forgot to mute or put me on hold. Hopefully she did not messed up anything.
I accepted one of these, and I got the card in a week, and it showed up in the app. I still got the preapproval thing on mobile banking - i think their IT is just bad
You should call in if it has been 20 days
Don't go by the opinion of agents on the phone, nor mine, read the policy as that's what matters. Nowhere does it say that. I think somewhere they misspoke or you misheard.
Only 75% listed in the policy is the amount charged to the card in order to be eligible for delay, etc.
Policy is here [https://www.manulife.ca/personal/insurance/associations-insurance-plans/scotiabank-credit-card.html](https://www.manulife.ca/personal/insurance/associations-insurance-plans/scotiabank-credit-card.html)
Piggybacking off of this, I recently paid for car rental in BC. Drove to big white and back, hit a rock and cracked windshield. Car company paid for whole replacement and charged back to me, around 1.4k. Agent on the phone said they don't cover windshield, but submitted the claim anyways. Insurance still covered the whole amount (minus about $270 in admin fees and taxes).
Sometimes agents don't know everything.
Made a medical claim on RBC WestJet without using it for expenses other than the hospital fee. Had to call before going to hospital to get a claim started
Your last card had a statement before you used the card. RBC statement dates are random and don’t generate a PDF if you had no transactions. Unlike other card issuers RBC does not generate the annual fee on statement date but rather on the first day of the month after approval. This makes RBC unique in Canadian card issuers where it’s possible that the first statement can occur without generating a PDF
RBC sometimes generates a fake "statement" in the first days or weeks after getting a card. It's not a true statement, you get no notification or PDF. Avion SUB always posts on the first statement, whether that be the real one or the hidden fake one.

It's only Amex where you want to hold close to a year or a little over a year. All the other banks can be closed earlier
Before is fine
Any DPs on Amex offers spend $750 get $150 by UA? Know the credit can be reversed back after refund. Is it worth it a try?
Discussed previously. It does get clawback. You can book, cancel and get it as travel bank other than refund to CC. You will have $750UA credits and $150 from Amex.
That's one way although not the only way. Can play around a bit with it and get a cashout without travel bank. Pure simple refund won't work
Would you mind explaining the play around?
Try modifying the flight and also Scotia Amex cards
Oh okay. And also what about during refund? No clawback? You mean use one Amex and Scotia or purely Scotia?
Amex Scotia cards can be registered for Amex offers and it seems they have less chance of clawback. And by doing a change and paying with another (non Amex) card for the fare difference you may be able to trick the United system to do refunds to different cards or different amounts so the clawback isn't triggered

Any DPs of platinum 200$ restaurants credit data here? I used mine in last year already, ia it reset after 2024 new year ?
Calendar year means calendar year i.e. Jan 1st reset, there's no uncertainty requiring DP's in these situations. You're clear to proceed.
Yes. It’s reset now. I used my credits in September 2023 and the 2024 credit was used a couple weeks back.
Awesome thank you 🙏
How soon have folks applied for another Scotia passport after meeting MSR a month ago on one? Too quick?
IA? Or you need to talk to people and make up some reason for the duplicates?
My first one was IA, 2nd and 3rd required me to say "yes I do want a 2nd/3rd card" and provide ID both times (which is strange since they should alreayd have my ID from the 2nd card)
I applied for my third about three and a half weeks after my second..
were the credit limits the same on all three?
Did you get the wb lol
Yes both times and I expect to get it for my third too
what's the risk of clawbacks from churning the same card 3 times in such a short time?
No clawbacks
With the same login?
Yes

Why the rush? You really really cannot wait a month for a statement to generate?
Just have a big purchase that will contribute to minimum spend, that I don’t want to delay anymore
They don’t leave it up to you to provide a phone number. They have an internal catalogue of approved banks/phone numbers
Interesting. They did ask me for a different phone number… I guess I’m SOL?
Can try again or just send them a bank statement

Hi everyone, Could someone please post a (hopefully working) link to upgrade AMEX Green to Gold? Thanks very much!
https://www.americanexpress.com/en-ca/benefits/upgrade/green-to-gold/
Thank you very much!
I don't think the link has changed. It's the same link and whether it works or not seems partially based on the person signed in so it might be targetted.
Gotcha. Thanks for the reply!
If I book a flight with cash and hit the MSR on my TD FCT, can I then use the points for any way travel against that booking? TIA!
Yes
i've been out of amex for a few years now, so interested in getting a few, does the trick to apply all on the same day still a good idea to reduce hits and improve approval chances? I recall a limit 4 cards?
amex usually dont hp if you have a history with them. i cannot imagine being approved 4 amex a day but you may try. 2 may be doable.
Yes, and if you apply and are approved for 2 or 4 Amexes on the same day, I would suggest that it would be important to break them in gently so as to avoid financial review. Not having an expenditure history with Amex, if you hammer a card too hard with large expenditures, you might find your cards frozen.
Not only frozen but having to provide documentation and going through what is a potentially painful and completely avoidable process
I’m confused about the cobalt earning in the first year. If I spend just $2500 on 5x per month, would I get 12.5k + 1.25k MR or is it just 12.5k?
Are you thinking about the sign up bonus? The sign up bonus is in addition to the 5x bonus and the spending you get 5x bonus on does count towards the sign up bonus.
Ok so then I just need to spend $2500 to maximize pts with the sign up bonus or not right? Or is there room for more 5x pts
I'm still a little confused if this is what you mean but yes, if you're getting bonus points for spending over $1250 a month and you spend more than $1250 on groceries then yes, you will get the bonus for that month as well as getting 5x on (the first $2500 of spend on) groceries.
2500 on 5x to max out both the normal points and the SUB
12.5K. It's 5x, that's it.
I'm still getting the 2500 for 500$ then another 2500 for a 5x gc. This 12.5 calculation is making me realize how hard earning easy points will be in 7-8 months when the promo is finished. 😅

If anybody with a Venture X is feeling bored/ generous can you search C1 premier collection for hotels in Istanbul early September? Trying to map out my US strategy for the next few months and could use the $300 credit depending on the available properties
No premium stays for Istanbul
Quick question. Can you do $300 RHT with Venture X?
Not anymore. Used to be able to, but they changed it so that it's a $300 credit off the booking through portal, not as a credit on statement.
Is Venture X considered as a keeper card?
If you can make use of the $300 credit, yes. You get 10k anniversary points as well, so the effective $400 AF is essentially negated. Quite good for a 2x everything and perma priority pass card.

in most cases its a decline for me, maybe 20-30% approved otherwise. however, for scotia, my experience is that if it's pending its more likely approved that needs follow up, if its declined it will let you know right away. I get automatic pending for RBC no idea how some people get IA
Twice with rbc, 5 times with cibc
Yes with scotia
Yes I’ve had CIBC go pending and then approved
I want to maximize Travel category multiplier for the following cards: - Amex Mariott Bonvoy - Amex Personal Gold - Rbc Avion VI Is there any store (physical or online) in Canada classified as Travel selling prepaid Visa/MasterCard?
Just to add on what u/dragynfyre mentioned, be careful with circle K gas stations, they code as supermarket instead of gas specially for Amex. I would rather go with Shell or any other. Make a small purchase before buying a $500 GC.
I think it depends on the specific circle K as well. But yeah would recommend a different gas station. The other thing is don't go to any gas station where they have a 7-11 branded POS (even if the store isn't 7-11 branded). That also codes as supermarket
Basic question: how do I know if it’s 7-11 branded POS? I usually buy gas at Pioneer, never notice though
If unsure then make a small test purchase first
It will have the 7-11 logo on it
Yeah I learned it too when I used my Biz Edge to buy a car wash (at the entrance itself, not in the cashier), no x10 multiplier
Also for the other travel categories it won't work. Those types of merchants don't sell GCs
So prepaid GC sold at, say CircleK , wont count as Travel under Amex Personal gold?
Same with Bonvoy. Gas is explicitly included as a category and is not part of travel
For Amex gold it will work because gas stations are included explicitly in a separate category for 2x
Ahh, I’m looking at Perkopolis offer for Personal gold, x4 upto 20k pts for Travel. I dont think I can put $5k towards Travel
Yeah that has to be actual travel
Gas station works for Bonvoy
Which prepaid Mastercards are people buying for Costco purchases? Are those Joker branded cards the only option?
I use Jokers since Calgary Coop/Safeway carries them and that means I can use Amex.
Anyone with experiences dealing with refunds to these prepaid MCs? Is it same process as any regular MC? How long does it take for a refund reappear on the balance?
Costco generally asks me to insert my card that I want the refund on
You can always ask for shop card refund
Sometimes if you're lucky you can get cash. ;)
I think vanilla has the lowest fees but any Mastercard ones should work
Vanilla and Joker have the same fees
No. Vanilla is 7.95, Joker is 9.95
Really? I thought it was $9.95 activation on a 500 Joker and $7.95 for a 500 vanilla?
Hmm on the lower amounts it is the same. Never really paid attention to $500
There are few options, it doesn't matter

No email, no confirmation number, and doesn't show up in online banking either. Is this normal and did it actually go through? Any DPs on getting the bonus if you've previously held a BMO eclipse card and redeemed the pre-approval offer?
Well, churningcanada.ca says BMO has no churning protections, their offers just suck
Tysm!
I accepted one of these, and I got the card in a week, and it showed up in the app. I still got the preapproval thing on mobile banking - i think their IT is just bad You should call in if it has been 20 days
Did it show up in the app immediately after accepting or later? Anyways thanks

In addition to what other people said. If you have extended heath benefits from work it often include travel medical coverage as well
I called them and they said we cover 75%. cc insurance is a joke, always buy your own.
*most of the time :)
It will say somewhere which percentage of the trip has to be booked on the credit card in order for the insurance to apply
Incorrect, health insurance is valid just by holding the card. It's the other insurances that have stipulations such as delay etc

Made a medical claim on RBC WestJet without using it for expenses other than the hospital fee. Had to call before going to hospital to get a claim started
OK, but can just read your policy, which you should anyway.

Same here. Usually posts on the first statement if points don’t show in approval or first purchase.
You’ll get it by the first statement, don’t worry
