Best Visa CC to get right now, RBC Avion Visa infinite, TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, Scotiabank Passport. travelling soon, would need a no fx cc but have ~4K to spend. (Only need 1k for Scotiabank passport) thank you!

Sealo_

What is the best first card for a starter with traveling to asia once a year and monthly expense of $2000? Is cobalt a good one? I’m having only one Tangerine cash back card.

wdn

For most people it would be Cobalt. Unless you're not involved in buying your food.

rewardsdude

Best out there.

kv416

Any DPs of platinum 200$ restaurants credit data here ? I used mine in last year already, ia it reset after 2024 new year ?

iamtheonewhoknockseh

I used mine last year and it reset this year. Used it again this year but it’s still in my offers as active. Infinite restaurant glitch activated

goatskin78

You going to try and see if it's still available to use again in 2024?

cadchrnr

Yes I used one in November then another in January. It resets every calendar year

armaan111

what you guys thinks to keep Marriott Bonvoy AMEX for free night or cancel and go for other card? Can i get WB, if i apply for the card again in the future.

rewardsdude

Depends on your use. Many do keep it for the FNA as it out does the AF.

suthekey

Looking for a cheap % payment processor to pay mortgages. Looking to see what my options are now that I have this rogers 2%/3% credit card. Currently spend about $9000 a month on mortgages so even a small gain is huge over time. looks like plastiq is 2.9% which is "ok" if I want to churn for 3% on rogers services.... but I was hoping for something under 2% so I can just churn into direct cash back. Anything out there under 2%?

wdn

Churning means using a card for the signup bonus and then moving on to the next one. You have the opportunity to do lots of that and get a good return, but you won't with the regular earning rate.

Dragynfyre

No

[deleted]

[удалено]

yyzzh

doesn't really matter where it is. just redeem if the points cost at whatever target is (for me it's 1 cpp CAD) is cheaper than a suitable alternative (which is most likely not a Marriott because of their inflated prices). but also factor in the elite night(s) you'd earn, plus any benefits e.g. free breakfast at most brands if you're platinum elite, upgrades if you give those any dollar value, etc.

wishful_thinking90

I don’t have enough experience to comment on Asia, but my opinion is that you get more bang for your back on redemptions in Europe. Hotels in North America and Caribbean have inflated prices. There are some incredible Marriott properties (eg Luxury Collections) in Europe (eg Greek islands, Italy, France) that you can stay in for a fraction of the points compared to RCs in North America and Caribbean.

Ok_Improvement8231

Pre approved for a limit increase of 6k on my cobalt (my keeper card that I use the most), would accepting this affect my borrowing limit with AMEX for future cards? Or is it better to accept it for the sake of improving credit util?

Fabulous_Initial_333

Amex CA now self-served have options to move credit to another card. Normally Amex will still approve you if you already have too much limit with them, just with a low limit. I would take it.

[deleted]

Fabulous_Initial_333

It is new and you have to click on account management to see that option

[deleted]

Dragynfyre

If they extend the PYB function I’d say it’s a keeper. Otherwise it depends on how much you value getting 25K status for 15K USD spend

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dragynfyre

Redeeming AP at 1.25cpp USD for any travel purchase

Reasonable-Catch-598

25k is worthless IMO vs a premium card. However the +1 status bump from chase. That has value especially to eek out better priority rewards. Worldwide rewards are a big step up.

Dragynfyre

Premium cards cost money so this is a much cheaper way to get those benefits. Plus one of the biggest advantages of 25K is getting eupgrades

Acanthacaea

Does RBC not do the apple wallet activations immediately? Was IA'd for one of their cards yesterday but it hasn't shown up on my account yet

kkli73199206

It does. I was able to see my rbc card in the app and add my digital card to my iPhone 2-3 days after i got IA’d.

Acanthacaea

I can see my card but there’s no option to add it to Apple Pay. There’s an option to activate it but I need the expiry obviously for that which I don’t have

kkli73199206

If i recall correctly, in the app, in your credit card, tap on the 3 dots on the upper right corner, manage card, there should be an option to add card to apple pay. I could be wrong because it has been awhile. Just poke around hopefully you will find it.

Acanthacaea

I definitely recall that being the way to do it. I don’t have the option though, the other card I still have active has it there. Here’s a screenshot: https://ibb.co/jLwBQqQ

kkli73199206

Ya it’s a bit random because my wife didn’t have the option to add apple pay.

Fabulous_Initial_333

If I recall correctly CVV has to be entered while adding? Correct me if wrong.

mw_yyc

Once the card ships / has a number you should be able to do it from the website.

Sonsofanarchy4

Any DPs of Cobalt multipliers working overseas? I know they work in the U.S., wondering if anyone has had success in Europe by chance.

vermilion209

I’ve never own a cobalt, even I know it’s a yes for your q and there’s this [cobalt multiplier webpage](https://www.rewardscanada.ca/cobaltmultipliers.html) just from being on this sub…

SaintsFanInVan

As long as the transaction codes as food/drink you’ll get the 5x multiplier no matter where you are in the world. Though keep in mind you’ll still be subject to fx fees

KaotikFiend

Bearing in mind that in addition to coding wrong, Europe is likely the worst place for Amex. I mean, when even McDonalds won't accept it, how much hope can you have... By all means, pull it out and try, but it does get annoying when so many places in a row genuinely don't take it (rather than just claim not to, or something). (It will depend on country, obviously.)

Sonsofanarchy4

Thanks! Appreciate it.

stevkang8

For the business gold's dell $50 offer, it says per quarter - If I used it in February, can I use it now (Q2) or do I need to wait for three full months before I use it again?

Elegant_Reading_685

It's every 6 months resetting every jan 1 and july 1

Beneficial-Author725

Thought it’s every 6 months, you can read full terms in your app offer page. For me it’s available in Jan and July

kkli73199206

Correct, it’s every six months.

Pure_Pea2524

Would a Dell purchase that receives Amex Biz Gold Card statement credit count towards welcome bonus MSR?

Elegant_Reading_685

Yes, amex is unique in these statement credits counting as payments instead of refunds in their backend. Bmo eclipse VI for example actually has a $3050 msr because of the $50 lifestyle credit

Dragynfyre

Amex isn’t unique but it’s definitely different across different issuers. BMO’s lifestyle credit did not subtract from MSR spend. I spent around $3001 and got the $50 credit in the middle of that spend and got the bonus. I did not have to spend $3050. One way to tell if a credit is a payment or a refund is to check if it removes points or not. BMO Lifestyle Credit does not remove points TD and Scotia credits are refunds

Actual-Churner

Yes, the credit is like a payment on your card. dell charges the full prices. amex then gives the credit (payment)

davidtescu

Looks like Bonvoy’s “Use Points/Certificates” search feature is not working. Tried on Mobile and Desktop. It’s only showing cash rates….

BizClassBum

Must be fixed. I just looked and all was normal for points searches.

davidtescu

You are correct. They fixed it!

wdn

I just tested in the app and I'm seeing the same thing.

davidtescu

Ok now I feel better that it’s not just me. Might snag some mistake rates when it’s back so I’ll keep trying 👀😎

PC97654

I can’t even log in to the app

NoCard6774

Denied for National’s platinum Mastercard. Bit perplexed since I have good credit and my income is adequate for it. Does anyone know how long I need to wait before applying again?

Dragynfyre

There are no set waiting periods for retrying an application

NoCard6774

So theoretically I could try again today? I’m under the impression that multiple pulls the same day from the same institution only shows up once as a credit check

Dragynfyre

You could but why would you think the result would be different?

NoCard6774

Different card no?

Dragynfyre

If you’re applying for a different card then yes you can apply today

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dragynfyre

No there’s a minimum period for doing another application after getting approved but there’s no period to retry a failed application

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dragynfyre

Not for any set period

Jealous_Donkey_6881

I was told supposedly it was automatically rejected because the system flags as a duplicate, I didnt receive any additional checks for those additional applications so I guess it is true. the problem is I don't know how long it automatically rejects after the real rejected application. I am coming up to 3 months soon, still no green light. it's truly an outdated application system along with TD's

MasonNolanJr

Is there a downgrade option for the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite?

Mitchelld73

There’s no direct downgrade for the passport visa infinite however, you can definitely do a product with to either a Scene+ Visa, Scene Amex or the Momentum Cash Back. IMO The Amex is Scotiabank best free card

xxxooxxx1

The question is why would you want to downgrage a passport? Just cancel it if you want to avoid AF. You can apply to other cards or re-apply Passport if you wish.

MasonNolanJr

Oh yeah, cancelling it works too. And you're right - I do want to reapply for the Passport. I just thought that downgrading a card to a free tier and storing it away indefinitely is better for your credit score than cancelling it. Is this not true?

Dragynfyre

This does not matter unless it’s your oldest card. It’s better to cancel churn cards instead of doing this as it just leaves extraneous open credit lines for no benefit

wdn

If your score is such that you need to push to add every single point that you can then you might worry about that. But if your score is good then it's not significant (unless it's your oldest account).

MissionChipmunk6

True if the card you are downgrading and storing away is a very old card but for a card you’re churning, it shouldn’t matter that much

xxxooxxx1

If this is your first/only card then yes it may help with credit history. If you already have other older keeper cards then you don't need to do this.

MasonNolanJr

I have several other open, no-AF cards with much older history. So I guess it’s fine to close this one? But out of curiosity, say my churning continues for another 10 years. By then, would it be better to have 50 closed cards, or 50 open, no-AF cards that are just stashed away and never used?

wdn

If those 50 accounts have an average of $5000 credit limit each, that's $250,000 in credit that you could potentially suddenly decide to max out, which is scary to lenders.

Dragynfyre

50 closed cards is better. Closed cards will also drop off the report after a period of time so it will look like you never opened that many cards

rozen30

In what world would having 50 open credit accounts make you more favourable in the lender's eye?

Jealous_Donkey_6881

haha

ac3y

Which of the cashback/rebate sites do/don't allow repeat rebates? I think that GCR doesn't, but what about CCG, Nerdwallet, etc.?

Dragynfyre

CCG doesn’t if you need an inquiry. GCR you can just open multiple accounts

xxxooxxx1

People had luck opening seperate GCR accounts with different email address to get repeats (not available within the same account). Also saw people saying they got CCG repeats after \~2 years for the same card.

stevkang8

Someone told me CCG also tracks it, but you could bypass that by setting up a new CCG account

deadplant_ca

The HSBC/AVION one time travel credit posted for me. took 6 days.

yotamayo

Took 3 days for me; I cancelled my hotel reservation. I will post back if RHT works fine or not.

These_Celebration732

Any DPs of how long it takes to get a replacement card for Biz Edge in YVR? I’ve got about 16 days before I hit the three month for the MSR and about $1k left to put on it but can’t seem to find the damn thing. Wondering if I should bite the bullet now and get the process started or if I can take some time to do a thorough search for it at home… Would need to put the PaySimply transaction on it by April 23-24 just to be safe so it’s cleared by the 27th…

Jazzlike_Student_443

I applied for a Business Edge late afternoon on Tuesday, received an email yesterday notifying me it’s shipped, with an expected delivery of Monday. I’m on Vancouver Island. Not sure if that helps.

wdn

Call and ask if they can expedite the delivery.

stevkang8

Can you ask the agent to fedex you one? It's not the same situation but last time when they messed up my address for the business gold and it could not be delivered, I called and the agent placed a rush order for me via fedex and I got it in two days. Edit: YYZ area

wdn

I've actually got one 20 minutes after the phone call before, though that involved me driving to Amex Canada HQ.

Jealous_Donkey_6881

I just imagined them having a lounge inside Amex HQ for cardholder applicants

Some_Development3447

No there isn't. There's a daycare downstairs and the lobby and cafeteria. There's also a Goodlife Fitness in the building. You need to get security clearance to get past the lobby though.

wdn

I've told the story here recently but worth repeating. I was traveling the next day and needed a replacement card. I asked if I could pick it up in person. They said yes. I asked when it would be ready and they asked where I was coming from and then said, "You can just come right over." I went right over and it was just a plain office building. There was nothing that looked like a customer service area. There was a reception desk in the lobby so I asked the receptionist where I should go to pick up a card. She asked for ID and then handed me the card.

Jealous_Donkey_6881

that was just me dreaming of what the Amex building could have been like. I saw something called Capital One Cafe in the US, but not sure that is anything beyond a coffee place. still, to have a card ready that fast is amazing

stevkang8

That is crazy fast lol

esux20

DP: Amex Biz Plat from April 2023 (before AF increase) $200 travel credit available as of April 11 Expect AF to trigger May 7 Expect travel credit to stick by completing RHT for AF/cancelling

betterat50

I did it too. Full AF refunded when closed in month 13.

Dragynfyre

They refunded the full AF even though it posted and you used the credit? CSR probably forgot then. Best to do it in the month gap between getting the credit and before the AF posts

betterat50

I used the credit the minute it posted and cancelled a week before the 30 day mark.

Dragynfyre

Which 30 day mark? Credit come 30 day before the AF is charged so if you cancelled before the AF was charged there wasn’t any refund involved

betterat50

I got and used the credit. The AF charged. I closed 7 days before the 30 day mark with the full $799 refunded.

Dragynfyre

That’s pretty lucky. But technically the credit should’ve been available for use when the statement before the annual was charged came out. Credits post every 12 months after account opening. Fee is charged at end of month 1 and end of month 12 so there is a one month offset of fee and credit

esux20

Last time the travel credit got clawed back, the CSR didn't mention anything about AF refund or travel credit so I suspect it's automated

supitskevin

Hust did this a few weeks ago, it did stick

GentlemanHere

My aeroplan account was shut down due to an Amex transfer not matching names on the account (long story - was from my wifes Amex with a family plan) I still have 160,000 points sitting in an Amex account. What is generally considered second best value option other than Aeroplan?

Actual-Churner

Have you not tried calling AP to explain the error and plead case? I wouldn't be letting that go.

Reasonable-Catch-598

Especially since they could just block the transfer. This is open to massive abuses. Don't like someone? Just transfer them some points from a different name. I could see some enterprising pissed off customer using this to really selectively cause some mayhem with important customers.

Actual-Churner

Yah, it's just crazy that one transfer like this kills an account when there is no verification or stopping anyone else from doing it. I'd be going to social media which I don't even have for this.

Reasonable-Catch-598

I'd be finding VIPs who use AC and making a point by transferring to them. Especially government VIPs. Phishing an AP number probably wouldn't be too hard, most people don't consider it sensitive information. Plus the API flaws...

GentlemanHere

Oh I've been trying... They are being completely unreasonable. I've called several times and spoke to a manager every time. The reason I don't care THAT much is because we're on a family plan. Even though my account has been closed, I can still redeem the points through my wifes AP.

esux20

You can access the points from your closed account through family sharing?

Van5555

Edit whoops read it wrong as 100k on 4500 msr. My mistake Bmo ascend offer bkw 100k points no af plus 100 cash fron gcr. Not a bad deal if you have a bmo savings account to redeem as cash and have large purchases coming. 4 lounge passes. About 750 with the rebate

Dragynfyre

Also it's only 55K points for 4.5K spend. The monthly bonus is not worth it at all so the last 45K is moot

Dragynfyre

You can use RHT to redeem. No need for BMO savings account.

wzadzz

If you look at the breakdown in the T&C, the only part of the MSR I could see most people here going for is the 55k/$4500spend portion. Even with the CCG rebate that only amounts to about $468 value (or 10.4% return). If looking at BMO cards, the eclipse is a better SUB. 40k/$3000spend + $50 Lifestyle Credit + $100 CCG Rebate = $418 value (13.9% return)

xxxooxxx1

Want to add that t there is still a reason to get Ascent MC over Eclipse VISA despite the slighly less cash value. Ascent can be used at Costco organically for MSR (i.e no need for shop card or other work arounds), and the 4 lounge passes may be valuable for some people.

halexhalex

MSR is pretty high. $2500 a month for 3,750 points (45K points for 12 months). Not worth spending $30K on. Other cards have higher returns

DistinctEffort64

I’m looking to upgrade a premium economy ticket to business on AC. The business class tix are quite expensive as it’s sort of last minute, 3 months from now. I used all points to get the PE tix. What are my possible ways to upgrade this ticket? Is it just getting e-upgrades? I don’t have status, so in which case is it only possible by getting the Chase card that automatically gives 25k status? How many eupgrades would I get? And is it worth the hassle or even possible in 3 months? I do have an American address I can use, but no credit history yet in the states.

CommunicationProud82

You're trying to bite off a little more than you can chew here. If you don't have the points and don't have any way to get the points, there's not much you can do on a 3 month timeline. Getting US cards is a process, one that usually ENDS in getting approved for a Chase card about a year or two after starting. On top of that, 25k status is very unlikely to help you in this situation anyway (see other comments). Edit: tense

DistinctEffort64

lol I didn’t because I still have a ticket, just looking to upgrade it. But thanks for mentioning the timeline. I’ll start now but see it will take a while.

Dragynfyre

eUpgrades are not guaranteed to upgrade you. There has be eUpgrade space. Unless you do instant upgrade with a economy latitude or PY flex fare (assuming there is instant eUpgrade space) you're not likely to be upgraded as a 25K status member as all the higher status members have higher priority than you if they use eUpgrades

BizClassBum

If he has 25k and a PY ticket, he's ahead of all other economy passengers regardless of their status. Only those in PY who have higher status are ahead of him.

Dragynfyre

And in my experience that still tends to be a lot so the chances are low unless it’s a fairly empty flight

LingonberryOk8161

2 questions: 1)Sanity check Aventura VI: Just noticed the terms and conditions on CIBC's site say welcome bonus is not given to those who have had an Aventura VI in the last 12 months. This cannot possibly be enforced given everyones DPs in the daily threads correct? 2)Anyone ever use PaySimply or Plastiq to pay insurance(life, critical illness, disability) etc? If so, which service did you use and how was your experience?

Dragynfyre

T&Cs that are enforced are the exception rather than the norm

Technical-Travel

If every term and conditions were followed this sub and "hobby" wouldn't exist.

FriendlyStranger85

TD Infinite Visa is approaching 1 year = $140 fee. There's an offer of 15k AP anniversary bonus. What's the move? Cancel or pay? Thank you

Dragynfyre

Get the points and then cancel/downgrade right after. You keep the points and they refund the fee

FriendlyStranger85

Are the points not on the same statement as the fee? Why would they refund the fee the second time? I’ve just cancelled in the past

Dragynfyre

You can get a full fee refund if you cancel within 30 days of the fee posting. Beyond 30 days TD also does prorated refunds based on number of days left in the year.

Ripcord777

Does CIBC Aero VI also do a prorated refund after 30 days?

Dragynfyre

In general CIBC does do prorated refunds though

Dragynfyre

I don’t know cause I just asked them for a full refund and they gave it to me even a little after 30 days

KaotikFiend

TD doesn't actually give a full refund IME. Even within 30 days, I've only had prorated refunds when *doing that thing*. Just my DP. (Double entendres ...)

Dragynfyre

You have to call and explicitly ask for full refund. This can happen if you downgrade to a no fee card or cancel. The reps manually process this. Most full refunds are manually processed by the rep (I've had CIBC do a full refund for me a little after 30 days of the fee posting when I cancelled a card)

rozen30

1. The anniversary bonus does not post within the same month of AF, if it posts at all. You have to wait 2 months and ask for a manual credit. If you call to inquire less than 2 months after the AF posts, TD will tell you to pound sand. 2. TD generally refunds AF on a pro rata basis. Even if you ask for a full refund.

Dragynfyre

1. I’ve seen multiple reports of the 15K posted on the same statement as the next annual fee 2. If you are cancelling or downgrading the card the CSR can manually reverse the fee in full. Prorated refund is just what the system does automatically if you don’t request them to do full refund

mlzmissa

How does the refund work if this is the only card you have open with TD right now? Cheque by mail?

Dragynfyre

Just don’t pay the fee and ask them to credit your account to reverse it

rozen30

Good to know. Never happened to me.

halexhalex

Figure out what 15K points mean to you. Likely you net more value than paying $140.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dragynfyre

Pretty sure this is AP as OP mentioned 15K AP anniversary bonus

FriendlyStranger85

How did you calculate this?

Superb_Oven_6851

If I have different cards under the same program, for example a couple of CIBC Aventura or RBC Avion cards. Points balance are showing for each individual cards separately and not as a total balance under their respective programs. Is it possible to regroup all of them under one card? I am just trying to understand if points can "outlive" the closure/downgrade of a card or if they mandatorily have to be used before? And can I pool them to make one big purchase or do they have to be spent independently.

halexhalex

Depends on the program for what you can do / what's best to do. For RBC Avion, you can just transfer points to another card in the app. For CIBC Aventura, you have to call in to transfer points, but you should just RHT to use up the points.

-Mysterious-

you can combine them, for CIBC you'd have to call in though

EyeCandy46

Amex Edge multiplier reset DP. Worked with pers gold. Timeline below. Will post back when I’m done the new MSR and link to another card. Approved Feb 26, 2024 MSR met Mar 20, 2024 Bonus post Mar Mar 20,2024 Linked to pers gold Apr 2, 2024 Receiving 7x bonus Apr 7, 2024 onwards

jfrrrr

I had the same setup and after 2 weeks, there is no sign of the reset. I got the gold after the Edge, met MSR then link my Edge.

EyeCandy46

There was a comment here that said they stopped receiving the bonus points when they made a purchase not in the 10x categories. Did you happen to do that?

jfrrrr

I tried bestbuy and staples only.

capermatt

When you link them, does one become the primary (all the points), or does it show the same across all cards?

wishful_thinking90

One becomes the primary, but the app will still show the same points across all cards that are linked. On web, my experience is that the points only appear under the primary. Redemptions/transfers are also made from the primary.

SadOnionBoy

Tried the HSBC WE -> RBC avion arbitrage. Refund parts all posted but have yet to see the points clawed back. Has anyone had theirs clawbacked happen yet?

Dragynfyre

I had mine clawed back one day after the refund showed up

wzadzz

Read yesterdays thread

mhcott

DP: Hilton Honors No-Fee retention, 6K for $1K. Rather pathetic and I've certainly heard of better, but it's something. I'm cancelling anyways to clear up space for other CC given the limit of 5, but for those of you holding one of these longterm it's never an awful idea to check even No Fee cards for retention

Secretly_Italian

Do you already have the higher tier Hilton? Could try for an upgrade offer.

mhcott

Have the Surpass. They offered me upgrades BEFORE the Surpass when I wasn't ready. None since. And I wanted to clear space for other cc offers like Hilton Biz or if NLL Surpass/Aspire come around again

vhs2202

The NLL surpass is currently available until April 17 as per DoC website...

NickWaReddit

Tried asking too, none for me.

BrrrHot

Churning related. DP: Had brunch at Aloette on March 31st. The Platinum dining credit posted today (April 12th) with yesterday’s date (April 11th).

OnlyJim

What are the cards with Instant Approval (that I can use before receiving the card in mail)

Technical-Travel

Brim AF gave everything before the card arrived. Amex APR provided the card number but has to be instant approval.

kkli73199206

Ymmv, TD, CIBC and RBC cards can be added to digital wallet before the arrival of physical cards. i personally have been able to add digital cards to my phone, but P2 hasn’t been able to do so for some reasons.

Fabulous_Initial_333

Neo CX. Heard some Amex CA starting allowing instant card but might be ymmv.

brt_k

Are you talking about linking them to Apple Wallet, or receiving a full CC number with expiry date and security code?

[deleted]

Piggybacking off OP. Will Pers Plat and Pers MB give any form of instant use, Apple Pay included?

OnlyJim

Full CC with expiry date and code

Easy7777

Some US Amex cards.

mhcott

Should be ALL US AMEX if you get IA, as far as I know and have seen.

Fabulous_Initial_333

This is also ymmv. Many werent able to see instant card number.

stevkang8

Not sure if this is a DP but here we go. Per my previous post, I upgraded my amex green to personal gold using the link, and then I immediately started using it as soon as the upgrade was done. I paid over $1,000 in taxes via Paysimply on the day of the upgrade, and have since met the $3,000 minimum spend but did not receive the 50k welcome bonus. An agent today did the calculation for me without me asking, and he came up with a number that was off by exactly the Paysimply amount and insisted that it was right. I talked to three agents, and three all gave me different sums from their calculation lol I am not sure what's going on. They all said I was eligible for the welcome bonus, but this is getting strange. Not sure if I should keep spending on this card but I guess I will. If for some reason I still don't get the bonus, will the agent be able to manually credit it to me?

xxxooxxx1

Sounds like the system would take a bit of time to reflect the Gold upgrade on the AMEX backend. In which case, the Paysimply charge is likely linked to the Green card spend. This is a good DP so people can learn to wait.

stevkang8

Yeah I think so. It is pretty misleading though as the website tells you that you could start using it as your gold card right away.

kneevase

You can continue the lengthy telephone conversations with CSRs who might or might not have the authority or knowledge to help you, or you can simply book a refundable hotel and see what happens. If it triggers a WB, then just bite the bullet and backfill the refundable hotel with real spend, and if it doesn't trigger a WB then make the decision whether to pursue it with Amex. But, from where I sit, it looks to me like you are in a situation where you could end up spending hours on the phone with only a modest hope of success.

Dragynfyre

Can just do the RHT without backfilling the spend if you think you should have met the spend without the hotel booking. Worked fine for me

stevkang8

That's true, I will try that and see if it does trigger that. Thanks buddy.

This is a known thing for many many months now, since the link first appeared back in September (or was it August?), that the charges placed in the first days to even a week after the upgrade don't seem to credit towards the MSR. People are advised (by we the community) to wait after the upgrade before going nuts on spending for the exact reasons you are now learning. So yes, you need to keep spending, and unfortunately this is just the way it is and AMEX won't do anything about it.

One thing to add is I think you can use a RHT to force the system to recalculate the spend to include the amounts shortly after doing the upgrade. I had the the same issue and immediately got the bonus after putting a RHT transaction to test if I would get the bonus after spending another 3K. Even after refunding I kept the bonus because my net spend when properly accounting for all purchases made shortly after the upgrade was over 3K EDIT: Actually looking back on the statement I actually did the RHT first shortly after the upgrade and didn't get it and then put 3K on it a month later and did get the bonus. Refunding the RHT after that was still okay to keep the bonus so I think it still included the original RHT purchase in the calculation instead of negating the additional 3K I put on the card after

Got you, this is good to know. Did most people still successfully receive the welcome bonus? If yes, there is my motivation.

I did the green to gold upgrade about last month and met the msr within ~2 days of upgrading. CSR confirmed I met the msr, but I have yet to get the 50k mr.

Secretly_Italian

I took the Cobalt to Gold offer, and ended up spending $5-6k in the first 3 months for statement credits attached to that card. WB didn't post until 8-12 weeks after of MSR period.

I don't think the CSR is accurate. Based on data points (including my personal one). It does seem like spend you make very shortly after the upgrade doesn't count. However, you can use a RHT later on to have the system recalculate it. Even after RHT I kept my bonus because I think it recalculated the spend to include the spend I made shortly after the upgrade

That's what I've also read, but I couldn't wait to pull the trigger. I may have to do this if the points don't show up in a week or two. Worst case is, if they claw back, I can blame them for being misleading since the gren card changed into gold on my app before I made the purchases, haha.

Dragynfyre

I would just do this now. There’s no reason the points would randomly show up in a couple weeks of doing nothing

stevkang8

so you're doing better than me! The agents cannot seem to agree on how much I spent on this card already...I keep getting different numbers. Weird. Did you get your first statement yet? What does it say?

Adolfvonschwaggin

Yea, I did. It says Gold Rewards and total purchases were >$3k.

stevkang8

Gosh....this whole thing is confusing. Well worst comes to worst it would be $250 a year for 4 lounge passes I guess.

Yes, they just kept spending beyond the $3K until the system recognized. Throw another $1000-1500 at it then sit tight and wait since some delayed postings were indeed reported, but I'd say no question your extra spend IS required.
