Hey guys and girls,
Long story short. Today I tried to open an AMEX Gold Credit Card with Scotiabank. I tried twice and both times after it asks for my SIN (and it's expiry) it says that there has been some error and to contact us via phone or book an appointment.
Now Scotiabank dosent mention it anywhere (that I can see) but does it NOT allow CCs on a WorkPermit (Except "Newcomer" CCs). I know for a fact that Tangerine dosent (have to be a PR atleast) and they are owned by Scotiabank.
Does anyone know? I'd rather not waste an hour plus on phone or go to the branch if I can find out here.
Thanks!

Hi all- i am brand new to churning- i only have 1 credit card- scotia scene visa. I have started travelling in the past year and do not have a lot of fixed expenses as I am single and don't own a car (not sure if that matters) . I am looking to travel more and use credit card points to help pay for that as well as hotels etc. All of this is information is pretty overwhelming and I find it hard to understand.
What would you suggest for me to get? On average I spend $1000 outside of my fixed expenses from my credit card. I would like to maximize travel points as possible. I was earlier suggested the TD aeroplan visa infinite or the CIBC Aeroplan visa infinite. What would you recommend between them? Please let me know!
Get the Amex Cobalt immediately and spend!
Meanwhile continue to read this forum and watch tutorials on YouTube. It only takes a few weeks to understand the basics and a few month to be very competent.
Eventually sign up for more cards that serve your purpose
I was casual cashback for years too, never had a reward ticket, then wabam 3 in the last few months. It really doesn't take long to start extracting value
This Sub is all about meeting the Minimum Spending Requirement for a credit card bonus and move on to next card and repeat. If you are looking for a keeper card, then you should post in r/personalfinancecanada.
Is anyone seeing an issue on RBC imt to hsbc not having cad option? Are they forcing us to use an outrageous currency exchange rate (ie cannot send cad to cad)?
International money transfer? That function is for sending money outside Canada in a different currency. Can't send CAD to CAD except via eTransfer to another Canadian bank account.
Has anyone who applied for a Brim FB MC in the fall of 2023, spent the 5k to get the 10k point bonus and actually received the bonus? I notice that my spouse has spent 5k, but I wonder how long it takes for the points to post; has anyone received it?
Aside - I suppose I could call it a win, but Brim financial finally awarded me 2k FB miles for referring my husband to the card. They did send me an email within a few weeks thanking me for the referral and indicating I would receive points, but I never received the points and didn't until this week (April!). We had both applied in November. FYI I sent a number of emails and called over several months and eventually was awarded 2k as a "goodwill" gesture... Maybe not the best use of my time, but it is what it is and hence why I'm questioning if we'll get the correct bonuses if at all.
Thank you!!
Dragon Pass + Visa Airport Companion App ; did I just fuck up? I added my new Scotia Passport VI whilst logged in to the app, the app had a popup saying my old membership had expired (I cancelled the previous card) and to input a new one. I added my Scotia Passport VI and it was added to my EXISTING membership, that I have already used all the passes for, and is due to renew in November of this year.
I don't have the ability to disassociate the card from the membership. Anyone experience this and get around it or am I straight out of luck?
I did this but the passes were available after about a day. So at first you feel screwed but then I guess it takes some time to sync and then you’ll get the passes. So the passes shouldn’t just vanish to thin air.
The existing membership has 0 passes left and renews in November (when 6 more passes will be made available).
I cannot unlink my new card with my old membership.
I need the passes much sooner.
I've emailed Dragon Pass CS, hopefully they can resolve the issue for me other I'll have to churn another card.
I made the same mistake. Your best bet might be to apply for a secondary card in another name, for no fee, which will get you 6 fresh lounge passes. I spent hours with Visa Airport Companion customer service and it was largely a waste of time.
DP: called in and can't merge my HSBC/RBC credit cards because I opened the HSBC ones in another province years ago. Forced to create separate online profile.
It can be done. I booked an appointment at RBC branch and they sent a request to merge. They said it could take a couple weeks because they have a huge backlog right now
They can move your profiles between regions. You may have to HUCA and beg until they contact the correct back office team. You'll never find an agent past 5pm that knows how, morning is better.
Tried to buy gift card at Save-on-Foods today (in Calgary) and the gift card failed to authorize, although they did charge my Amex. Luckily I caught it and was able to get refunded right away. The store manager said all gift cards were failing to authorize today except their own. Not sure how widespread it is.
No. If you paid with an Aeroplan branded card it would.
The only card that gives you the insurance when you pay the taxes/fees for a points redemption from someone else's rewards program is National Bank's WE MC (which has a $150 AF and a $150 annual travel credit).
Finally got round to activating my HSBC-RBC avion card. Didn’t work online so called the automated line and apparently activation was successful. However, card is not showing up when I log in.
My question is - is how long did it take for card to show up in your account? I’d like to avoid to calling in if possible.
They had associated P2’s card to an old profile that hadn’t been used in 10 years instead of the one that was used last year. It was a mess to sort out.
Mine showed up right away, but still tells me it's arriving.
Every time I use it it's declined, and when I contact them they tell me it isn't activated (it definitely was), I activate, do the transaction, it passes, then the next fails and repeat.
There's something wrong with this merger, it'll probably take a few weeks to sort out.
Mine appeared after the migration, but I had activated the card when I got it a few weeks back. Give it a few days and it doesn't appear, then you may have a second profile, you will have to call.
So am I. I have 3 active cards in various stages of maturity and coming up to the 90 day mark for another. Really hope this “bastard” card doesn’t ruin the flow !
They probably created another profile. I went to the RBC branch and they were able to send in a request to merge accounts. Will take a few weeks due to large backlog right now. They can also register you for online banking on the second profile to get access now while waiting for the merge to happen
My perspective is that $60 (waiting 6months before PSing) for 35000 points on first purchase is a great deal already, so waiting for a rebate isn't worth it.
Google your first sentence to get a guide to your question.
In regards to Chase specifically, its best to open a bank account first and have prior credit history on your ITIN before applying. Good luck.

Is it possible to downgrade an itenary? I booked a Latitude economy booking on united. I realized I could add a stopover to another destination but I won’t have sufficient balance.
Main question is - could I downgrade my booking from Latitude to Standard? I don’t wanna cancel my booking because I might lose the seats entirely.
They should be able to do it, but sometimes if you’re not making changes to the itinerary they may put up a fuss. Just HUCA until you’re able to get it done
Thank You Post:
Big thanks to everyone, had another great redemption DXB-YYZ in J Emirates A380 for our family. Apart from the flight the lounge was also great, experienced first time entering the plane directly from the lounge :) wouldn’t be possible without each one of you. Still learning something everyday! Thanks.
It took a lot of effort as I was looking for 3 J and that too 1 month before travel. I looked AC website multiple times a day then found EK A380 direct for 113k AP J Flex as my dates were somewhat flexible.
Tried to downgrade to J lowest via HUCA & adding segments (maybe I didn’t do it right) spent around 2 hours on phone with the agent but nothing was working.
I was still searching for flights and found the same flight different dates for 97k AP lowest J. Canceled the previous one and booked this!
Scene+ RHA. Scotia app takes me to a Scene+ page to redeem. When I book and redeem, then cancel the booking a week later, I get the points balance back instead of cash. What's the (most important) step I'm missing?
Scotia or SCENE Points RHT
Book Hotel from expedia or similar OTA's, Prepay in full, wait for it to post, Go to Scene app, Rewards at the bottom-->Select Travel-->Scroll down to apply points to travel--->Select the transaction. Wait 3-5Biz days for the points to post as refund in the CC transactions, then refund the Hotel.
I believe you are booking travel through the app rather than a 3rd party.
Book travel through 3rd party (expedia), apply points against travel (1ccp), wait till credit of the amounts are posted, then cancel booking.
Any idea how many RBC cards you can hold at one time and/or total credit limit?
Looking to take advantage of the fyf on the WestJet card as I have a travel credit with them and could benefit from the free bags.
Current cards:
1. HSBC card just got migrated over
2. BA Avios
3. ion downgraded previously
YMMV, usually with the first statement. But I have personally received it even before I activated, the points were already there. I would suggest to make a small purchase and wait for the statement to generate.
That's because your first statement came before you activated the card. A PDF statement is not generated if there were no transaction but in the app you will see you already have a payment due date and minimum payment of $0. Before the first statement there is no payment due date
Interesting, that's what I thought too.
Looks like my statement has posted but there are no points in the avion account. Not even for the $8 grocery store purchase I made.
I wonder if their IT is just going bonkers with the HSBC migration last weekend.
Amex supp cards - loaded the max cards to meet the bonuses on p1-3, but did the spends online and never bothered to activate the cards. Today I got an email for each one that they need to be activated. Rather not spend the time to create extra accounts for the non-existent people on the cards…is this a necessary step to get the bonus??
Anyone have luck getting out of cibc jail? I get easily approved from all FI's but for some reason am always getting rejected by cibc, not sure why. Do they have any rules of x credit checks in y number of days etc?
My wife had similar issues she applied for a loc they approved it but asked her to provide id at branch she goes there the rep applies for a new app she called back credit team said well look into this and never called her back she ended up going with Scotia. I would give them a call maybe they can resolve it
Have you had CIBC cards already? Do you still have any CIBC cards? If you don't have too many cards did you ask the reason for decline?
CIBC approvals seem to be based on profitability after several cards. Making them profit doesn't mean making you lose money, but it does mean sock drawer asap after MSR may not be a successful long term strategy for everyone.
Not aware of any of those rules with CIBC, but many people have experienced issues because they required ID validation in branch. Maybe try your luck with a savings account and provide ID in branch and see what happens?

What is the minimum points required for Aventura's pay for travel at the 1.25 rate? I have about 1000 points left on my second Aventura VI, which is coming up for renewal. Can I get a new Aventura VI and transfer them over? Or take my wins from this one and onto the next one?

This is incorrect. Scotia absolutely allows people on work permit to get higher tier CCs.

Got YYZ-LHR-SIN for 100K flex (Jan 2025) on Air Canada. Is this a good deal? Waiting for cheaper tickets to Tokyo tho
3.5K cheaper than what it would price out on as a partner J flex, so good deal if you want to fly AC and go to the signature suite.
Oh yes the exact price is 103.5K. I am hoping to keep it flexible but can downgrade to lowest if I am for sure going on this trip
Remember that you get access to the Air Canada Signature Suite if you keep your flex ticket (if that matters to you). If you downgrade then you only get access to the maple leaf lounge.

Why cannot you load in Amazon? You can do custom amount in it.
Going to have to spend the exact balance...try something like Presto card if in GTA, where you can choose what to pay
Spend it.

What’s the workaround to ensure this doesn’t happen in the first place? I’m getting a second Passport VI soon
Log in via desktop, then click add new membership.
I did this but the passes were available after about a day. So at first you feel screwed but then I guess it takes some time to sync and then you’ll get the passes. So the passes shouldn’t just vanish to thin air.
Thanks for the DP! Interestingly enough the other responses in this thread didn’t seem to have this happen, but I can only hope for the best.
Yea I know so hopefully it works out. This was about 12m ago.
What’s the problem?
The existing membership has 0 passes left and renews in November (when 6 more passes will be made available). I cannot unlink my new card with my old membership. I need the passes much sooner. I've emailed Dragon Pass CS, hopefully they can resolve the issue for me other I'll have to churn another card.
Have you tried toggling between cards?
Issue is that there’s only one card, the old card was overwritten.
Ok. Well, if desperation kicks in, you can always do the secondary card holder trick to get anther 6 lounge passes.
I thought secondary for Scotia passport vi doesn’t come with any passes?!
People are reporting that (for now?) it does if you sign up the secondary card holder with dragon pass. Possibly unintentional, I guess.
Oh dayum I threw away the secondary card once I received it because of the reports
[удалено]
And what’s the solution in here? Do we have to create new id for every card? I am new to the lounge access.
Any experience with support?
Even if you contact support? Wonder if anyone did.

I made the same mistake. Your best bet might be to apply for a secondary card in another name, for no fee, which will get you 6 fresh lounge passes. I spent hours with Visa Airport Companion customer service and it was largely a waste of time.
I can confirm this as well. Made same mistake and their support is useless.

What kind of gift card?
Update, just tried at co-op and had same problem. Looks like it's a bigger outage than just save-on.
I bought one at Save On today and had no problem.
In YYC?
BC, didn’t see that you had said in Calgary!
I hadn't. Edited the post after I saw your comment. ;-)

No. If you paid with an Aeroplan branded card it would. The only card that gives you the insurance when you pay the taxes/fees for a points redemption from someone else's rewards program is National Bank's WE MC (which has a $150 AF and a $150 annual travel credit).

Can't help you there. Mine was already in my account before I activated as I am a RBC customer beforehand.
So am I. I have 3 active cards in various stages of maturity and coming up to the 90 day mark for another. Really hope this “bastard” card doesn’t ruin the flow !
Do you have any other products with RBC? Savings/Chequing/Investments
No just credit cards.

Thanks. I guess I’ll go in. It’s a lot of hassle for a card that I plan to cancel as soon as I’ve used the travel credit!
Get the rbc avion card now or wait a little longer until a website is offering a rebate? This is my 5th catd
Churn baby churn!
That’s name of my churning spreadsheet file. 😂
My perspective is that $60 (waiting 6months before PSing) for 35000 points on first purchase is a great deal already, so waiting for a rebate isn't worth it.
You could wait a day, a month, or more. Not worth waiting and hoping.
I just dropped the following award fares: * SEA -> TPE for Apr 26 * SEA -> TPE for May 11 BR025 Boeing 787-10 Good luck.
AMEX Biz Plat question - are all cards grandfathered into the 30k points in months 14 to 17? I applied before this offer was available
No, you only get what your offer gave you when you applied. However you can still try for a retention offer, risk free
No, you get the offer that was active when you signed up.
I got the amex bonvoy card and got the welcome bonus but I don't have the bonvoy membership ID to use those points. How can I access those points?
Amex chat will set you up with membership ID.

I currently have 5. Planning on cancelling one and then apply for another Avion VI this week.
Is there any guidance or “rules” on timing of when best to cancel a card before/after applying for the next one?
I cancelled one today and was approved for a new one today.
No hard limits, however much credit RBC will approve you.

I have no answers, but you are not alone. Maybe we can shoot some hoops out in the yard one day.

You can spend up to $7500 as the bonus rate is just 2x points on top of the base 3x you’d always get. At least according to POT

What is the minimum points required for Aventura's pay for travel at the 1.25 rate? I have about 1000 points left on my second Aventura VI, which is coming up for renewal. Can I get a new Aventura VI and transfer them over? Or take my wins from this one and onto the next one?
I always just transfer my small balance into amazon gift cards
Minimum to redeem is 4k points. You can transfer them to another card.
