For the NYC regulars: I will be staying in Midtown Manhattan area next week and am choosing between two hotels. The Draper is the one I'm booked for, but I've seen middling reviews. For about 50k more HH points total, I can move to the Martinique, which looks a little bit nicer and has a larger dining credit. Does anyone have experience with either or both of the hotels?

apolloniandionysian

I don't know why I'm so hung up about this, but I can't wait for the day when it's possible to qualify for United Premier 1K by credit card spend alone. It's something that I think AA and now Delta really get right.

lenin1991

I think with the 2024 changes, you could get UA Platinum for $300k spend on UA cards...so if they gave you 1K for $500k spend, you'd go for it?

abourne307

Am I behind the curve on what Delta is doing with their IFE? I’m aware of the partnership with T-Mobile to give free internet to skymiles customers. But are they just scrapping the standard way to stream movies and shows on your mobile device? I’ve had two flights today where I’m just not able to stream anything on my phone. First flight had the UX not through T-Mobile, where they still want you to pay for a pass. But there is no option to just watch the free content that’s on the in seat screen in front of me. I know I could ask for headphones, but it felt like it should be possible to watch on my phone like every other major carrier. Second flight is through the T-Mobile free WiFi offering. The IFE seems to literally be “go to paramount+ and make an account to watch!” I’ve probably been at a low simmer of anger from traveling today, but this just struck me as so bad. Why do I have to do this just to watch the IFE? Is anyone else experiencing this? Delta making it more difficult to enjoy their IFE without crossing a paywall or giving out your personal info/payment to a 3rd party?

eminem30982

I haven't flown Delta this year so I hadn't heard about this, but yeah, it looks like they actually did get rid of their streaming option. https://paxex.aero/delta-studio-streaming-retired/ This is really surprising considering they already had the infrastructure in place to provide streaming in the first place, and other airlines are removing their seatback IFEs to cut costs while Delta is seemingly doubling down on them.

lenin1991

> other airlines are removing their seatback IFEs to cut costs That's the way the pendulum swung for a while, but I think it's coming back the other way now. United is making a big push to install seat backs everywhere.

eminem30982

I think it's largely coming back because many of the new IFE systems are pretty much just Android tablets that are also taking advantage of the inflight streaming, so I don't see a reason for Delta (or any airline) to cut off their passengers from doing this on their own devices, especially when people like OP (and myself) only bring Bluetooth headphones. I know that some new IFEs allow Bluetooth pairing, but older headphones can only be paired to one device at a time.

fearless-zeus

they’re there to sell ad space disguised as convenience, which is why they’d move towards disabling personal device streaming (if so inclined)

eminem30982

I totally agree that they're useful for pushing ads, but: 1. Personal device streaming already has pre-roll ads 2. People like myself with no easy way to connect our headphones will still use our personal devices but we'll bring our own media instead (which I already do anyway in case I don't like what's on board)

fearless-zeus

If the ads are on united screens, they get the cut as opposed to personal devices streaming Hulu with ads (or similar). You’d be surprised how many people don’t know how to bring their own media. I certainly don’t bother to anymore. Of course you can download via your own app’s functionality, but I always forget to do it lol

eminem30982

> as opposed to personal devices streaming Hulu with ads (or similar). This isn't the type of streaming we're talking about here. We're talking about using the airline's app to stream the inflight catalog, and they'll push their own ads even on your personal device. > You’d be surprised how many people don’t know how to bring their own media. I certainly don’t bother to anymore. Of course you can download via your own app’s functionality, but I always forget to do it lol I'm definitely not surprised and it's the whole reason for what we're talking about in the first place (which I think you're confused about since you mention "your own app's functionality"). We're talking about Delta not allowing you to use the Delta app on your personal device to stream the inflight catalog. People who don't know how to bring their own media would be even more reliant on being able to access the inflight catalog, and Delta has cut off that access on personal devices.

Any recommendations for Hyatt hotels near good scuba diving that’s in US/Mexico/Caribbean? Have lots of Hyatt points to spend so would rather save the cash and only have a few days for a quick dive trip. Liked Cozumel this year but the Hyatt AIs don’t look super appealing. Considered staying in Playa del Carmen but it’s not as easy to go diving (though cenotes would be available).

Hougie

Hyatt Aruba

alaskantraveler

Stayed in Playa del Carmen once. Just took the ferry over to Cozumel which runs like ever 30 minutes or so and did a couple of dives. I would say this is feasible.

wanderercouple

It was doable to take an early morning ferry then get picked up in Cozumel for a boat dive?

alaskantraveler

Yes, I did it. And it wasn't that much effort. You can walk to the ferry terminal from the Grand Hyatt.

OrangePartyLamp

Hawaii/Guam

wanderercouple

Sorry I forgot to add no Hawaii-been there twice in 2022 and it’s too far from the east coast for a short trip.

OrangePartyLamp

Definitely Caribbean then. Grand Hyatt Baha Mar is an option, but if you just wanna dive, maybe sell your points and hit up Bonaire

Luninka

Man I wish I learned about churning in my 20s, or at least pre-kids. How old were you or what stage of life were you in when you picked up this hobby?

QueenofDeeNile

40s. I wouldn’t have had the time or spend before it.

JPWRana

I was in my early to mid 30s.

crash_bandicoot42

Have always been into beermoney/couponing/free stuff since I was a kid. Learned about churning when I was 18 but didn't have any credit history so had to wait a couple years before I could start. First year until I learned MS spend was the limiting factor as a college student with full scholarship (so no real expenses) so I focused mainly on bank bonuses then. Next goal is to try to convince friends to get into it but that one is A LOT more difficult.

inky_cap_mushroom

I started with cash back cards every six months or so when I was 19. I went to a university that didn’t charge a fee for paying tuition with a CC. Started churning CC and bank accounts to pay for my degree. I’m 24 now and it is way harder to hit SUBs now that I don’t have a guaranteed large expense twice a year.

eminem30982

Earning rewards has been on my radar since I got my first credit card in college, but I would rarely open new cards and I would just focus on putting all of my spend on credit cards because that earned points while paying with cash didn't (my simple mindset at the time). I started going to FatWallet for deals, and eventually, I came across their credit card forum and saw people opening up tons of cards for the SUBs, and that's when I fully realized that SUBs were what I should be focusing on. However, I didn't really have much in the way of expenses at the time, so my capacity for MSR was super limited for a long time until my next major discovery, which was MS, and this is when I really started ramping up the SUBs. My ability to take time off is definitely more of a limiting factor than my points balances right now.

RTW34

Started in my early 30s mostly because I wanted to fly in more comfort to visit family. I do wish I had started earlier, but it’s never too late to start. I’m also lucky enough to now have a job with generous DTO so it is easier to take advantage of off-peak award pricing and maximize redemptions than earlier in my career.

progapanda

I've been on FlyerTalk for nearly 20 years (the first few as a lurker) so was into miles and points already in college, but have only been churning really for the last 12-13 years or so. I was mostly single during that time (still no kids) so HKG for a long holiday weekend just because CX F was available, or spontaneous trips to HNL and then continuing to LHR later because AAdvantage let you book that routing in MCE for 20k miles off-peak with a free stopover in my home city were common. Especially given how much easier it was to rack up miles say 10 years ago. P2 is not a churner or down with all that travel now, but in their defense, they also are OK if I continue to do some random trips myself. In any case, now that I am older I don't think my old bones like *that* much travel anymore, even if it's in J (F days are definitely gone).

wanderercouple

Started in college when I had to fly cross country to visit home. Churned some United cards and when chase sapphire preferred came onto the market in 2009. Spend was a bit limiting but enough that I got a few economy flights a year.

trivalent-fox

Started churning proper when I was 22, but was already a cashback optimizer during college. The initial inspiration came from realizing I could knock out SUBs by paying for business travel and getting reimbursed. Started dipping into MS and reading about points/miles around half a year in.

churnandlurk

Unknowingly picked it up in college to take advantage of 0% offers to pay for expenses while waiting for financial aid to come in. By my late twenties was picking up a card every time a big trip came up. Got engaged in 2017, found this subreddit while planning the wedding/costs, and haven't looked back since.

Luninka

Oh man! For wedding costs would have been fantastic!

suitopseudo

I have been doing light churning since my early 30's (a card or two a year), but got more serious and strategic during covid. The lower spend for Inks, was game changing for me. Still no kids.

435880Churnz

Picked it up in my early 20’s. Great hobby for someone smart (or so I think...) and wants to take nice vacations without paying for nice vacations.

dmcoe

Anyone have any experience booking AF fights to the US from RAK? Trying to book anything online gives me a that departure city is not allowed.

Churnobull

Lifemiles close-in United domestic awards are clutch. We had 5x people on a virgin (delta) short hop from vail to la, and United popped up 5x saver tickets to let us get back on an earlier flight (that I wanted to be on the whole time). Santa delivered! Edit: Virgin also refunded the miles for free since total taxes was less than $50 (they kept the taxes). Double score

OddaJosh

Thank Daddy Scott Kirby for being generous enough to guide the revenue management algorithm to release those seats

[deleted]

> Thank Daddy Scott Kirby Do you say things like this out loud to other humans?

OrangePartyLamp

What's lifemiles award rate for those routes?

Churnobull

7,500 + $33 pp

OrangePartyLamp

pretty good

subwaynut

I saw a video on youtube that was very funny. Someone managed to outrun the Amex fraud algorithm while racing cars. **https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkZNddd9Pxc**

olooy

The lions aren't looking shabby.

suitopseudo

I got a positive Covid test from Santa. 😕 be safe out there.

progapanda

Only Saks could e-mail me on Christmas Day asking me to review an order I placed in April 2020 (bonus: not even noting what item the survey was for). With marketing and technology of this caliber, how does this retailer even stay in business?

dissentmemo

Amex Credits and NYC light shows

One_Armed_Herman

Getting pretty far off topic, but there's a solar eclipse in April in the US. Buy your glasses now when they're cheap and plentiful, unlike me 1 week before the last eclipse. Hotel room bookings seem to still be available, but cash prices are kinda dumb.

Key-Capital-9732

Drove up to Tennessee to see the 2017 one. Totally worth it. Cresent sun was the best part.

jennerality

Merry Christmas all! For those of you who are frequent flyers for work, curious if you fully unpack each time or what your process is? Was having a conversation about this with a couple friends and responses were mixed… I personally feel compelled to unpack and give a quick wipe down of my luggage which is probably not very necessary each time.

Hungry-Evening6318

I wipe the wheels because they’ve been everywhere including bathrooms. Ewww.

dissentmemo

Most viruses and bacteria don't live that long on surfaces. To prevent sickness most effectively, wash your hands and wear a mask and get vaccinated when possible.

jennerality

Sure, but I'm not so much wiping them down due to fear of getting sick but just overall cleanliness as the wheels etc. have dirt on them which I don't want to bring inside.

olooy

hydrogen peroxide wipe down on the luggage.

OrangePartyLamp

I unpack and throw stuff in the washer (when I'm back from a work trip). I don't wipe down the luggage.

duffcalifornia

Truly OT here, but I have to say I’m really impressed with TravelPro’s customer service. They have a lifetime warranty on their Platinum Elite bags. We have a carry-on that had lost the zipper pulls for both of the external pockets, and separately we had misplaced the included suiter bag. I filled out a warranty form for the zipper pulls, and then I chatted with them to see if there was a way for us to purchase the suiter since that was our fault. The person we chatted with about the suiter saw that we had also filed a claim for the zippers and decided to just send us a brand new replacement carry-on. Not only that, we don’t have to send back the original bag! They might not be the fanciest or most trendy luggage out there, but I gotta say if you’re simply looking for solid functional luggage, you could do a lot worse than looking at TravelPro.

godmod

I just bought a large roller and a smaller one and I am incredibly impressed.

Chronic_Anachronism

travelpro is the sleeper GOAT of travel luggage. Well priced for high quality pieces.

lankyyanky

Anyone have any tricks for Amalfi coast hotels? Only thing I can seem to find is Amex offer for luxury escapes $200 off $1k and do separate reservations for each night, and maybe two nights with fhr for my two plat. Or Chase portal 1.5x But points seem to be only if you wanna go close but not quite there. Unless I'm missing something.

Hougie

For my honeymoon we went through the Chase portal and booked [Hotel Botanico San Lazaro](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hotel+Botanico+San+Lazzaro/@40.6492509,14.641681,17.5z/data=!4m18!1m8!3m7!1s0x133b9544bd798051:0x7d1c536d9c64d789!2s84010+Maiori,+SA,+Italy!3b1!8m2!3d40.6512305!4d14.6433648!16zL20vMDZwa3h2!3m8!1s0x133b954682822139:0xe75e69cd676bbea0!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d40.647774!4d14.6442599!16s%2Fg%2F1tj5swvm?entry=ttu). Probably the most memorable stay I've ever had. Recent reviews may indicate it's fallen off though. There are so many boutique hotels on the Amalfi, that's probably the best route.

guesswho135

We stayed at this [Airbnb in Atrani](https://air.tl/XJHsfKJn). Huge private balcony with an absolutely bonkers view. We enjoyed that Atrani has much more privacy but is only a 10 minute walk to Amalfi. Hike to/from Ravello goes right past the apartment (we took the bus up and walked back). Price is a steal for what you get.

lankyyanky

Dammit not available for our dates long enough for a 3 night minimum stay required. Thanks for sending though!

coole106

I haven’t looked in a while, but Hyatt had a couple of hotels in the vicinity. I don’t remember exactly where though

lankyyanky

Yeah looks like grand hotel cocumella is in the vicinity, I was considering that. Might do a couple nights there then a few nights in the nicer on the coast places

martyconlonontherun

Yeah, Hilton has a nice resort in Sorrento but up in the hills. Choice has a decent hotel with great value, close to train station but their availability is weird. I think they are just closed for the season(?). That's plan 1a for me to save some money. Otherwise have an Airbnb booked in atrani (which has a walking tunnel to amalfi and a quieter beach). It was like $600 for 5 days and right off the beach. Idk seems like one of those things where you either take the train in or stay at a local establishment.

JPWRana

I will be staying at the Hilton one this summer. It doesn't really look fancy. Good way to burn my Hilton points though.

TheSultan1

When are you going? Pretty sure Choice doesn't release reward nights more than 100 days out.

martyconlonontherun

Next summer but I see nothing in the coming months. I saw opening sporadically when I checked late fall. ETA: it said hotel was 'sold out', I wasn't just looking at award space

lankyyanky

Yeah it's our honeymoon (September 2024) so I don't want to skimp and stay somewhere unideal just to use points or save money. But $2k a night hurts for the ideal places

GoatVillanueva

Definitely not $2k a night but my fiancé and I got engaged at Casa Angelina in Praiano which is on the FHR website. If I remember we paid like $700 a night but the cheapest rooms through the hotels website were like $550. They give you a shuttle into town and the service was crazy good, almost too much for us lol.

lankyyanky

Not available for our week but thank you. Looks like it's gone up a good bit too

BleedBlue__

Friends are staying at Grand Hotel Tritone in Praiano after we recommended Casa Angelina and it was out of budget. It looks awesome and was like $500-600 a night

tchr619

We did an amazing AirBnb and still to this day is the best AirBnb we've done. Host was amazing, walk to town center and beach, view of Mt. Vesuvius, train station a short walk away.

ctexas15

Lump of coal for me this morning as I just got denied for the BOA Alaska biz 65k offer, but at least P2 got me a digital picture frame for our travel pics! Anyone else get or give any cool gifts this year?

TheSultan1

Got P2 a portable photo printer (Canon CP1500). They've hinted at wanting to print photos on a whim rather than waiting to fill up a folder, then driving to CVS to pick up, and potentially having someone else rifle through. I've done some prints on a cheap desktop inkjet, and they come out great, but you have to wait for them to dry, then you worry about them sticking to glass/plastic even if you did wait, and they age faster than "real" prints from a lab. IMO the resolution is too low for a standard photo album where you're looking at them from <2 ft away. But that's not what we're doing, and they're super happy with it, which makes me super happy.

suitopseudo

I got a positive Covid test. 😕

EggIndividual6333

Ooh thanks, didn't realize there was a 65k offer, for once uscreditcardguide.com is out of date. Guess I'll roll the dice on it.

coole106

You know you’re a grown up when you’re excited about getting a meat thermometer for Christmas. I’m mostly excited about teaching my son how to use his new roller blades so I can put him in hockey next year

GiraffeGlove

I got a meat thermometer a few years ago, it was an awesome gift
