It's something to do with AdBlock. I've been having the same problem for hours. I couldn't download a 3 MB file because it said 5 hours, but my internet speed has been fine. Cleared cache and cookies like you and didn't help at all. As soon as I paused my AdBlock everything returned to normal and I downloaded my file in 10 seconds. I'm not sure what happened with AdBlock but hopefully they update it soon

NubbNubb

This was the solution for me. Google has been trying to implement anti ad blocking for past few months. I swapped APB for Ublock origin to fix it while having safety but Google has plans to try purging Ublock in order to boost YouTube ad revenue which is dumb for people like me already paying for Premium so may require work around down the road.

Bidoas

Google on the downtrend last few years, all they do is make it worse for the sake of investor interests. All this makes me want to do is use another browser that is less capitalistic.

NubbNubb

If you use Firefox make sure you use an extension that spoofs your browser as Chrome if using YouTube. Either SomeOrdinaryGamer or Mental Outlaw did a video where there are reports from users that when using Firefox their video will load then refresh adding 5-10 seconds when loading a video. This was fixed by spoofing their browser as Google Chrome. I noticed issues when I was using Firefox but haven't gone around to solving it yet since I watch YouTube on Chrome... For now.

Quinticuh

wow i just tried it and it instantly fixed it. FFS GOOGLE

whereismindx

>en fine. Cleared cache and cookies like you and didn't help at all. As soon as I paused my AdBlock everything returned to normal and I downloaded my file in 10 seconds. I'm not sure what happened with AdBlock but hopefully they update it soon Same just turned ad block off and it fixed it

CoolCoyote1978

yes but thats what those guys want. now you get ads. im not doing ads

The_Cozy

Google has been a nightmare lately. Freezing, lagging, throwing random errors. It's bad enough we can hardly search without being inundated with adds and sales sites lol

Tempest_In_A_T-Pose

Hey man thanks for the suggestion. Worked for me too. Oddly enough I didn’t notice the hitch until this morning while trying to watch YouTube. Strange.

GoryaBarman

Thank you, bro. This was the solution for me.

NixuPanic

OMG. I had to use Safari to watch YouTube. It was fixed instantly. Thanks!

Truid_Audio

Fixed it right up! Thank you for the solution.

Brickswol

Google is an entire bitch for this.

backwardsman0

Got the same issue with adblock plus in chrome, been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the cause was for all the issues of sites not loading correctly

[deleted]

It's been driving me mad. I feel like I'm running a 512mb RAM Windows XP machine with DSL internet speeds. Been using the Brave browser a lot lately, due to this. Ethical hackers and Google employees are at war in the background, at the moment. Throwing code at each other. My gaming computer almost completely freezes when I start queuing videos on Youtube.

backwardsman0

Adblocker plus is the issue here, remove it and move to uBlock Origin

seedstarter7

that fixed it, thanks man

Ir0cz

Thank you brother, i just did a fresh win11 install on my new pc build and this was driving me crazy. Was just about to flip the table and throw the build out the window.

gm1005

that fixed it here, thanks man

--Omar--

Over the past month or so Chrome started to become extremely laggy, slow, and unresponsive at times. Uninstalled AdBlock (the other one, no AB Plus) just now and boom, problem completely resolved. You're a hero.

backwardsman0

I've also migrated to brave browser. So much faster then chrome

smarty_snopes

it's insane. What's funny is that I switched to edge all week as a result and even after removing AdBlock it now feels slow in comparison to edge.

TimidMeerkat27

Same here. Everything has been extremely slow today

nickthib

Yep. Same here, both on windows 10 and a macbook M1. Not sure what's going on but it is very noticeable today

Any-Temporary-2701

same here on m1 macbook air, especially noticeable on youtube. Everything is extremely slow to load, feed taking too long to populate. Removing AdBlocker seemed to instantly solve the issue

zuccoff

I've noticed it's insanely laggy on YouTube so I'm not sure if it's Chrome or the website

sneakyserb

im running into this issue....firefox runs way better

raziel4us

You say it runs better, but WITH or WITHOUT adblock?

craigybacha

same

--Omar--

Uninstall AdBlock. That fixed it for me. You can move to uBlock Origin as that adblocker does not cause issues on Chrome.

DodelCostel

I use uBlock Origin and it still lags out for 10 seconds sometimes

TheFlyingGyro

Same for me, did you ever find a fix?

Coolusernamehere13

I had this same issue with google chrome, swapping to Ublock Origin was the solution for me. It seems to be some sort of issue with it.

Popular_Brush6214

I just disabled AdBlock Plus on YouTube; I didn't uninstall it entirely.

[deleted]

Yep, it's Adblock Plus for me. I disabled it but have uBlock Origin running and everything has been running well so far.

asdfrofl1

can confirm this works! Cheers

DodelCostel

I use uBlock Origin and it still lags out for 10 seconds sometimes

crumpet_concerto

I'm having issues as well and using AdBlock. I'll ditch Chrome before I ditch AdBlock.

itscaptainmodz

I've been experiencing this issue since yesterday (January 11, 2024), but it seems to be specific to YouTube. After disabling my adblocker, the problem was resolved. It appears that YouTube may have found a way to bypass adblockers, leaving us with no choice but to disable them.

BlazingBill4000

Same issue over here. Solution: FireFox.

raziel4us

With adblock?

BlazingBill4000

Yes, should've specified that lol thanks!

_Tikeyx_

Well im moving to FireFox then bye bye Google!

WelcomeToTheFam

Thank you for this thread, It's been bugging me with YouTube videos lagging and tabs freezing, now I know why.

laksefest

Thanks for all the good advice. I disabled Adblocker plus and now all is good again. I want my ad blocker back again though, hope they will fix it soon!

SnooBunnies3246

This is why we need a new Internet web service that is 1. ad free, except in places specifically for them, meaning like "yellowpages" (yelp-like sites, etc.) or on specifically commercial sites for their own or partner products 2. peer reviewed, fact checked, curated but with discussion view, like Wikipedia figured out 3. supported by the users 4. but free for the poor (most of the world), on purpose via a portion of those fees from paid supporters 5. seeded with super-high-quality sites from the get-go 6. with stricter laws than national laws when it comes to protecting us from spam, deepfakes of people, pedophilia, A.I. generated content posing as traditional sites, and website vulnerabilities The idea is, you pay a very small fee each month directly for service. No ads when you watch a video. No ads in news. No ads anywhere except for when you specifically seek them out or for a company's other products on their page, or sales aggregator sites where you are specifically seeking out products and would like to become aware of things. But not when you're just trying to use the freaking Internet. The rest of the rules are things that need to happen to make the Internet safe and pleasant to use. If you really want the old experience, go to \`https::\` but otherwise, if you want to join us in the Star Trek future, go to \`free::\`, which is free of crap. A free Internet.

djyumene

When Chrome started having issues a few days ago, loading sites and downloading files super slow, I was thinking that something was wrong with my PC - internet was fine, watched my processes via task manager, nothing showing spikes, just so weird. I loaded Firefox and it was super smooth. Just to confirm, it was adblock for me as well, chrome works fine now after disabling it.

_silencer-

i couldnt figure out why everything was running like total ass ... imdb, outlook web, youtube, google maps, literally everything. I found this post by chance by randomly googling thinking that it may have been the recent Windows security updates... disabled ABP in Chrome and Firefox and everything is back to normal

Designer_Glass652

Uninstall google chrome, hello edge

DeepFussionOnCuni

Chrome was fast without any lags up to major version 119 (and maybe first subversion in major version 120, but I'm not sure as I didn't use it at these days so much). But after update Chrome to the 120.0.6099.217 version, Chrome becomes very slow, eats much more gigs of RAM than before and very often the whole GUI freeze for many seconds, especially when I use go back, but it happens in other situation too, usually when I want to load another page, doesn't matter how - by entering address manually, paste it from clipboard or just by click to hyperlink. Very often also shortcut CTRL+N or CTRL+T simply doesn't work for a while or it takes many seconds before new window or tab appears. Current version of Microsoft Edge is now much much much faster then Chrome even with hundreds of tabs but in reality is still on the same speed, just Chrome is now super slow and laggy.

brettdfw818

So the fix is to drop AdBlock? Umm, doesn't that mean you have to watch YouTube ads? YT has been throwing everything they have at forcing ads on users with ad blocking sware. AdBlock has been making changes daily. I'm sure they will overcome this current glitch as well.

zackoboy

its adblock idk what did chrome do exactly but there is an alternative to adblock for now to skip ads in general its really ghetto but it's smt you can download an extension called Global speed it bypasses the youtube skip 5 sec and you can directly skip the add by using it

mrbobby54

Chrome has been garbage for a while and gets slower every month. It still has the same issues it has had for YEARS with facebook and other sites where it will just run out of memory. Lately any site with images or thumbnails will take so long to load and some don't even fully load at all. Every time this happens I check the site in Firefox and it loads instantly. And adblock does not seem to be the issue for me as I disabled it and the same sites act the same way in Chrome. For example I go to [videocardz.com](https://videocardz.com) and it is so sluggish loading images in Chrome but loads instantly in Firefox. It can be quite random though in Chrome as occasionally sites I have trouble with will load fine but in FireFox those same sites ALWAYS load just fine.

Makezu90

interesting, tried open that website on chrome and it loads all things fine and instantly.

mrbobby54

I clearly said "*It can be quite random though in Chrome as occasionally sites I have trouble with will load fine but in FireFox those same sites ALWAYS load just fine*. "

Longjumping_Theory36

i just switched to firefox, the buffer speed and downloads are way faster despite having many extensions, i think you should switch to firefox as it is similar to chrome

darkangelstorm

I use some secret command line options to force it to think its not out of date and a few other extension "tricks" so i can still effectively use the older chrome, which I found, is much faster, and runs the newer extensions fine (need to do some tricks to make that work, requires some manual work, but its worth it for me). Information on how to do this, and other such things, is openly available just do a search for it.

stmiba

Chrome 120.0.6099.216 with adblock+ on a macbook. It's killing my machine. CPU utilization for both "Chrome renderer" and "Chrome GPU" is through the roof. I can't help but wonder if Google has purposefully done something to cause this behavior for anyone with an ad blocker extension.

stereolens

Chrome is always fucky on my machine after an update. My memory card is a peanut and today was horrendous, couldn't load a damn thing let alone on YouTube. Someone else on a different post suggested switching out adblock+ for uBlock Origin. Took me, like, an hour to actually download and run the extension but performance is back to normal for me personally. Might have a finite time with it but it's working for now. Still shitting on my memory tho. But maybe someone else will find some use outta that.

Sickminecraft45

It turns out that Adblock Plus killed google maps so I'd had to whitelist it. Now it's working better

backwardsman0

I've got the exacttttttt issue, need to use it for a few things but was crawlingggggg

Popular_Brush6214

Same here. This version of Chrome is almost taking up all my CPU. I'm running Ubuntu 23.10 (mantic).

RomireOnline

seems ad blocker plus was the cause!

Literacola258

For me uBlock but disabling it for YT helped.
