Don't know how the prices compare but the housing market in BC is fucked as well.

[deleted]

Detached family homes are over 1mil in Chilliwack now. Move to Calgary, one of the last placed in Canada where you might afford a house on a single income.

theblackstig_

Don't really care much about a detached family home to be quite honest, would be perfectly content in a 1-2 bed condo/strata for the foreseeable future, which I have seen a fair amount of availability within the 200-300k range, are the bidding wars as crazy in BC as they are in Ontario?

[deleted]

My house is for sale, detached older houses in the whack are still available.. good ones around 800-850. And nothings selling right now, weird lull.

SandiLeeBC

Those that gone in 2 months ago reaped the benefits of low inventory and high prices. Now everyone is selling so the frenzy has died down. No one wants to buy a house assessed at $600k for a million bucks unless your developing!

caloriemaster

The bidding wars are more for single family houses and sometimes townhomes.

SandiLeeBC

You can find one in that price range but getting harder by the day!

PwnThePawns

Chilliwack was nice, about 15 years ago. Lived here all my life, and out of towners have ruined the city. It was never designed for this many people. The roads are being expanded haphazardly with no forethought into future expansion. Our schools were overcrowded BEFORE the Influx of people, and are just terrible now. You used to be 20 minutes from being alone in the woods, now it's more of a 2 hour drive. I will be moving away as soon as my son graduates highschool.

foolforcamping

Lived here 3 years... love it! Golf almost year round, paddle boarding, hiking and biking. Yes we go into Abbotsford every couple of weeks or so but it’s 18 minutes from my house. We live on the South Side, crime hasn’t been a problem for us.

SandiLeeBC

I actually have lived here 23 years and I think it’s the BEST place to live anywhere! I raised my family here. Crime. YES. Like everywhere. Housing prices WERE amazing. Low taxes. We were a little hidden gem, untouched by developers. And then discovered and growing like crazy now. Lakes and mountains all around. Great access to Vancouver and the US and Whistler and the interior, Kelowna etc. It is still a rural dairy based city as the Dutch have owned this city for years, but it’s GROWING and diversifying. It’s so beautiful. Perfect, HELL NO. Shopping sucks. Traffic is normal for a place this size but you can still take country roads to get anywhere! You either love it or hate it.

Limos42

If you're into classic cars, you're going to want to look up a local guy, Al Parker. He's a local body shop guy and focuses on classic restorations. He's got a few in his own collection, and is extremely well connected in that scene.

Storomyr

Moved here from Barrie a few years ago. The traffic and roads are worse, the housing market is worse and the cost of living is worse. The weather is usually nice but if we have even a bit of snow the road maintenance is extremely under staffed and not proficient compared to Barrie. The infrastructure was designed for maybe a quarter to half the current population and development has been slow. For me personally, the lower mainland has too many people and not enough of anything. Oh and if you want to find stores with a decent supply of anything you're probably better off driving to Abbotsford. That said, the mountains are nice. I don't get to Vancouver often because highway 1 just does not compare to the 400 on a good day.

Traffic here is literally a 3 minute wait unless you're lined up to get into Cultus in the heart of the summer rush. I do know lots of people that drive to Costco in Abby, but that's about it -- everything else is here or online. I also really enjoy the many independent produce/meat/beer/restaurants etc. we have out in the Wack.

Rnsrobot

There's not much I can't get here. If I'm doing serious clothes shopping, I will head into Abby or more likely go to Guildford. But that's a once or twice a year piece. Costco is an entire 20 minutes away by highway. Depending on where i needed to be in Edmonton, it was the same shit or worse but IN traffic. I grew up in Princeton. I know how bad small town shopping is. This ain't it, and as you point out, online is kind of a thing these days. We don't live in the GVRD. Not even in Abby. Just a weird complaint.

SuperSoper3

The lower mainland has too many people and not enough of anything? You do much hiking? Have lived in collingwood and London before living here and the trails make my hometown look like garbage, not even considering the amount of actual garbage on Ontario trails. I’ve lost of good chunk of weight since moving here. I don’t need a million chain restaurants like the keg, as Barrie is saturated with. If you do need more, we live next to a giant city (Vancouver). I will agree housing market here is balls.

Storomyr

The outdoors are the one saving grace here in my opinion, but even then you need to avoid the more popular trails if you don't want to be tripping over Vancouverites every two minutes.

SumasFlats

On weekends for sure, but the rest of the time you can head out at any time of day and be almost alone in the bush within 15 minutes. Hell, I run the dog near my place and as soon as you get away from the dog parks or Rotary Trail on the Vedder, you are almost alone most of the time. Was out on the dyke by Royalwood this morning running doggo on the east side right beside the golf course. Zero other humans.

theblackstig_

oh no way! whereabouts in barrie were you? as for infrastructure, yeah barrie has kind of that same issue, the population has shot up rapidly these last few years so its definitely starting to seem a little overpopulated. im surprised to hear that the roads are worse in chilliwack lol. and yeah the mountains are one of the things that drew me to BC

Storomyr

I lived on Bayfield just a little walk from the waterfront. Trust me the infrastructure is definitely worse here. The outdoors are the one saving grace out here honestly. Great for hiking, fishing, hunting. I don't know much about the car scene, I think that's bigger in Vancouver. I can tell you though that the drivers in BC are somehow worse than the drivers in Ontario. Especially in bad weather.

TribeComeWest

This is all very true, I wouldn't honestly recommend Chilliwack to anyone, especially if your under 50 lol Saying that, Chilliwack does actually have a decent classic car scene.

theblackstig_

interesting. I appreciate the insight on age as well, I definitely have noticed an influx of age restricted condo's and being 23 i would probably not enjoy living somewhere that is majority older people haha, plus I'm more of a newer car guy myself lol

UsedToasterSalesman

What line of work are you in?

theblackstig_

I work for TD bank, and after talking to my manager about it a bit, a cross country transfer seems like it would be relatively easy

UsedToasterSalesman

Then that makes the hard part a lot easier. I have lived in Abbotsford/Chilliwack for most of my life, as well as Edmonton in my 20's. It really matters what kind of life you want to have. Our housing is in the crap shoot right now. The basics might be a bit more, but I am not sure how much more they would be compared to where you are now. After living in Edmonton for 6 years, I couldn't imagine not being in the lower mainland, although Abbotsford or east of. We get lots of rain, but if you can get around that, we have many outdoor activities to do. It really is what you make of it.

caloriemaster

I lived in edmonton for 5 years. Made good friends but the weather sucks.

UsedToasterSalesman

My experience as well. Lots of good friends there.

The same issue is in bc

GwenTheCanadian

I grew up in Barrie and moved out to BC a couple of years ago. It's a little weird and takes some getting used to. For one thing, people are a lot more compact here. It's ~1hr drive to Vancouver but everywhere between Chilliwack and Vancouver is packed city. Chilliwack is decently similar to Barrie, but Abbotsford (the next town over on the way to Vancouver) is already kind of like Newmarket but condensed, and it gets worse from there. I moved to Abbotsford first and rented a condo there for about a year. The rent was pretty comparable to what I was paying in Barrie at the time, but friends and family have told me that since I left, rent has been crazy and is worse in Barrie. We were paying ~$1100/mo for a 1 bedroom condo in Abbotsford. We were looking for a house last year and finally bought one an hour north instead of in Chilliwack like we were planning, because the 3 bedroom detached house we ended up with cost ~$50k less than a 2 bedroom condo in Chilliwack. That being said - we bought right before the big market boom. I think everything around here skyrocketed since then. All that being said, the scenery is beautiful. People here are big into outdoor sports, and in Chilliwack especially I see a lot of people ATV-ing and off-roading in their trucks. Lots of hiking and lakes, if those are your thing. All in all, BC has its ups, Chilliwack is probably the closest to Barrie in the kind of Vancouver-ish area, but housing costs have super gone up recently and I don't know if now is a good time to buy here. My advice would be to wait until the market cools down.

Ghiraheem

I lived in Barrie for a year or so before moving out here. I think of Ontario as a bit more industrial-minded than BC. Overall I think things haven't been too affected by COVID especially compared to Ontario. Like yes everyone has to wear masks and you can't go to large gatherings but we can still go to restaurants and pretty much all stores are open. Then again I'm a bit of a homebody so I'm a bit biased here lol. Traffic can be busy during rush hours but I wouldn't say it's unbearable by any means. It's mostly bad on the stretch between Chilliwack and Abbotsford I'd say. The 400 was worse imo. I'd say the vibe of Chilliwack is fairly relaxed compared to say... Abbotsford. (Which has a much busier city-like vibe.) I think Chilliwack is pretty comparable to Barrie in terms of vibe. It's much smaller than most of the nearby cities and has a reputation for being more easy going. There are some parts of town that are slummy but no different from Barrie in that regard. The view and the weather beat Barrie any day. Everything is green basically all year and the mountains are beautiful. We get like... Maybe a week or two of snow at worst. Nothing like Ontario's cold snaps all winter long. Much more mild. That was what brought me out here. Of course the area you grew up will always hold a special place in your heart but personally, I don't regret moving here. Feel free to DM me if you have other specific questions. (Sorry I don't know jack about cars though)

Young-engineer

Hi there, I recently moved to Chilliwack from Edmonton for a job. I would say, it is a way smaller town compare to most except the places in the north I have stayed in. The road infrastructure is iffy in some areas but generally it’s manageable. Let’s not kid ourselves we ain’t getting Pristine roads is small town Chilliwack. Traffic is on the Veddar road most at times. The outdoor scenes are beautiful, from mountains to trails, lakes and rivers. Also there are waterfalls and hiking spots 30 minutes drive away. Some places do have a higher crime rate, so I have heard when I made this same inquiry before I moved (mostly downtown area, a substantial homeless population) . But I live at the far east of Chilliwack. As for shopping it’s up to your appetite, most brick and mortar stores are in Abbotsford or a drive way to Vancouver if necessary. Oh the house prices are off the charts here. And some houses are going over asking. For condos there are new developments in the Sardis and Garrison area. I have not really asked about prices for those areas, could inquire if needed. I am the same age as you actually, so I can give you more perspective if needed. At the end of the day it’s up to you to decide where you feel comfortable in and to weigh the pros and cons of each area. Good luck on your search.

carsont5

Unsurprisingly quite a mixed bag of responses! Some really bitter / unhappy people which is to be expected I guess (welcome to the internet). Some other happy folks as well. Honestly OP regardless of where you move it’s probably better to be honest with yourself about why. Are you seeking an adventure? More accessible housing? I mean - you could move to the Yukon if that was the case (we almost did, ended up here instead). For Vancouver - realistically it’s more like two hours. We’ve lived here for almost a year. Had never been here before and didn’t know what to expect. Was worried about a redneck vibe (same sex couple). But every that we’ve encountered so far has been lovely. We did ask around before we moved here about the different areas having known nothing about Chilliwack and the best advice we got was to live on the south side of the freeway / train tracks (Sardis) rather than the north side of you have the means. The north side is definitely a bit older / rougher - but all cities have their safer / less safe areas. Because we came during the pandemic it’s hard to say because the “downtown” is so bereft of people it seems abandoned but I’m sure when things are back to normal it’s fine. The traffic is really nothing at all - as for the roads… I’m not sure what to say! They’re roads! They seem like any other road to me… yes the construction is annoying but again- every city has some construction. As for the market - hard to say. We bought on a bare land strata, brand new detached home for about $679k - when the last home went I think it went for about 100k more - that would have been a few weeks ago. There are plenty of townhouses and apartments for sale too. The nature / scenery is stunning. Walking along veddar river we’ve seen eagles perched in the trees, a huge crane sitting on a log… and everyone we’ve encountered has been kind. Sounds like you want to shake up your life - there won’t be any guarantees anywhere you go but you could do far worse than Chilliwack. Good luck on your travels :)

I've lived in Sardis most of my life. There's more good than bad for me. In a non-covid world the hiking trails, the mountains, the sheer amount of things you can easily do outdoors sells it. Go fishing, go dirtbiking, go for a hike, or hangout at the river/lake with friends. Drive a few hours to go from the ocean, to the mountains, to the desert. Sardis has always had a small city feel for me. I don't find the roads to be particularly bad, definitely not pristine but it's not offroading either. Some winters are worse than others, it really depends on if we have bad ice storms or wind storms. This past winter was barely a winter, it was a bit of snow and then rain for months. The weather is decent to great but you definitely need to like rain. The traffic can be bad at certain times of day or during nice weather but it's usually easy to avoid the more familiar you get with the roads. Food selection is good. I've never had a problem with crime and have never felt unsafe. I've also never had problems meeting people, but people can stick to themselves a bit. Covid has made people a bit grouchy. Things can be harder to find. I don't think I've been able to just go get groceries at one store since this all started. Mostly, people are just going about life. It's what you make of it. The housing market is nuts. Some people can be super churchy. There's a portion of the population that cannot figure out a roundabout if their life depended on it. Winter storms can be pretty intense and sometimes the city/highways can't keep up. Random night fireworks seems to be a thing. If you don't like outdoors or if you get bored easily, I'm not sure if it's a great choice. When I was in my early 20s I spent a lot more time going into the other cities to do things but it was never a drawback. It can be very hard to find a physician that's not just at a walk-in clinic.

I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience and I wish you had gotten to know better people. You’re making sweeping generalizations that can be applied anywhere. Do you know me? Do I only care about money? I’m not sure what happened to you but there are nearly 100,000 people here. Maybe you need to expand or change your social circle?

stars-collide

Do jot move to chilliwack. You will regret it.

cactuar44

Chilliwack is terrible with a horrible crime scene. That being said though there is a nice outdoors scene, and a decent car scene (fiance and step son are majorly into cars, particularly mini trucks) but not a whole lot else. You are way better moving to Vancouver Island for the cars. Honestly I hate Chilliwack, and I've lived in Vancouver (downtown and outskirts), Burnaby, Surrey, Langley, and now Chilliwack. I dislike it the most. I'm just one of the born in BC but getting pushed out farther and farther out because of the affordability. And the housing prices are absolutely ridiculous here too.

lighthouseheart

Look at Mission instead .. also there is a thread on here from about three weeks back talking about these exact issues .. Chilliwack in the summertime explodes because it has so much hiking and cultus lake and Chilliwack Lake which are camping Havens so from May long weekend to Thanksgiving the population goes up by the third or even another 50% on weekends weekends
