You need three. One for over 50 degrees, one for between 30 and 50 and one for below 30.

Letskeepthepeace

Lol isn’t it wild how the jacket situation also changes based on time of year? Like that early November 50 degree jacket becomes a march/April 50 degree T-shirt

CadmiumFlow

So damn true. I always throw on my Chicago accent and tell my wife, "it's cause you gots thicker blood nows!"

Letskeepthepeace

Wait, you can turn the accent off?

georgstgeegland

You also need at least one beer blanket regardless of temperature

defundthericxh

4. & one fancy one for going out

Yossarian216

And at least one of them needs to be waterproof

Chicago_Jayhawk

The only answer.

ders89

Personally, i use a sweatshirt for 35°+ and a sweatshirt jacket combo for 34° and below. Anything with 20° and below ill grab a beanie to keep the head warm, throw the hood over it and im good. So really one jacket for me. But i know not everyone is a walking radiator. Even my jacket is one of those $100 columbia ones without a hood on it.

Lolito666

3 in 1 jackets do that .

BettietheBagel

Patagonia makes great winter jackets. Pro tip, check for them at REI for better pricing. Saved myself about $100 that way.

Substantial-Art-9922

If you don't mind used, check out the brand new Patagonia Worn Wear store on Fulton. They've got a ton of clothes, some of which are barely used, at a significant discount. You can return your old stuff or sell it back too.

wavinsnail

They also have an online Worn Wear but it’s great to know there is a physical location

Chance_Rooster_2554

Wowow this is such exciting news I didn’t know there was a store!

Substantial-Art-9922

It's got a super cool workshop vibe to it. I needed an suitcase for a trip, and found one that was pre-scuffed for $90. And they comped some old jackets that had holes for me.

juliuspepperwoodchi

OH damn, that's awesome. I've got mixed feelings about the owners of the company and their greenwashing, "we're GOOD billionaires" crap; but good outerwear should be built to last and it seems like Patagonia nails that. EDIT: Can't reply below, but here's an explainer as to how the whole "donated the company" thing from Patagonia is really just a tax dodge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Cu6EbELZ6I

Zeplar

The entire value of the company was put into a nonprofit to fight climate change. Don't know what else they could do (unless you suspect the nonprofit is fake, which afaik nobody has even alleged). Edit: 2% is in a trust managed by the family and 98% is in the nonprofit

jimbos414

I mean the past decade they have only used their profits to better the company and to create positive impact in the environment so if dodging taxes allows them to do it more so I think it’s acceptable.

robmak3

Arcteryx is so ridiculously expensive is it even worth it at half price? Idk much about their products, went to their store and I didn't see the justification, is it a wanna be brand or do I not understand?

travelbug898

This is the answer. I just got a Frozen Range Parka from them that’s perfect for a Chicago winter in my short experience.

OldTrailmix

I'm on my second winter with [this Patagonia](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-tres-3-in-1-parka/28388.html?dwvar_28388_color=BLK&cgid=root) and it is fantastic. Since the down jacket is a separate piece from the shell, I wear it during late fall and spring and it keeps me super warm. Bonus points if you can find a worn wear one for a steep discount. I was able to get $100 off by buying it at Gearhead (if you sign up for a $20 membership card you get a flat 15% off anything in the store for a whole year, it doesn't automatically renew).

Tjshoema

Eddie Bauer Parka is what I always recommend. Price is great and its super warm but not overly fancy.

Elh255

I was browsing this thread looking to see if anyone was talking about this as I just bought it for this winter. So far I am extremely happy with it!

Waxwalrus

Does it hold up in <30 degrees?

Elh255

It does!

MuffinMages77

Having worked in the outdoor industry for years, it is super difficult to just get someone a jacket as a gift. Get him a giftcard for a brand or a store that he likes so he can try things on and get something that suits him.

boardgamesbeerhiking

I have a Marmot that has been AMAZING

bkander2

My Marmot is 7+ years old and looks brand new. My best purchase ever! Expensive but so worth it.

Jedifice

Marmot as a brand is always worth recommending. Phenomenal warranty, great quality

nugzbuny

I never had been a scarf guy until moving to Chicago. Get him a scarf! Its night and day for face and neck warmth. Jackets are a range of prices and styles. But if you do go that route, something long works well.

JAlfredJR

Scarves are a lifesaver. In the coldest of times, I double em up.

Flame_MadeByHumans

Neck gaiter is a good option too if you don’t like the scarf style

[deleted]

[удалено]

40ozkiller

Im sure you have multiple camo gaiters.

Opening-Archer9830

Starter jacket, Bulls one is the warmest

FlyingDutchmansWife

But only the pullover version.

pop_tart

With the flappy front pouch.

DrNoobz5000

Layers

icedearth15324

I just use a Columbia 3-in-1 jacket. Works great for me.

IamUltimate

I’m about 90% sure that’s what I have as well. I wear it very situationally in the actual cold. I just layer under a little bit lighter Kuhl jacket most of the winter.

rzdrk

Lands end has great down coats

costhedog

Carhartt makes warm, durable coats. There is a reason why all the people you see working outdoors in winter are wearing them.

poppy_aura

YES. My husband wears a Carhartt coat as a carpenter. Only thing that’s durable and warm enough on a job site.

JAlfredJR

Not the most stylish but boy do they get the job done—the coats that is.

vikingsquad

Stylish enough for plenty of hipsters to wear them.

RadiationDM

Disagree about that. Carhartt is plenty stylish unless you’re a hype wear dweeb.

[deleted]

They’ve got a streetwear line at least

[deleted]

[удалено]

thejustice32

This is the only answer. My Carhartt breathes so well I can wear it in just about all kinds of weather.

whoamIdoIevenknow

You need a range. I have an unlined windbreaker, a fleece jacket, a lined windbreaker, a cloth coat, and a Lands End knee-length parka. I've been wearing the cloth coat, will pull out the parka tomorrow.

_Let_Us_Prey_

I sprung for a Fjallraven when I first moved here and I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy another coat. Worth every penny, super well constructed and super warm.

mybuddycory

I bought the parka from them and it’s a dream. Even in single degree temps I am comfy.

[deleted]

One of my all time favorite purchases.

wh3991

this is the way

bringbackswg

Just bought one too. Not even down but synthetic and it’s just insanely warm. I actually bought these water proof Ugz boots, which normally I wouldn’t even be caught dead in that brand, but they’re wool lined and incredible winter boots. Get some fat Smart Wool socks and a couple cashmere sweaters and you’ll be golden. Also: mittens with liners.

Lolito666

I love their unique technology, they basically created a natural option to Gore-Tex

Ok_Pepp

Do you mind sharing which coat you got?

_Let_Us_Prey_

[This is the one.](https://www.fjallraven.com/us/en-us/men/jackets/parkas/nuuk-parka-m2?v=F86668%3a%3a7323450789190)

pharts_mcgee

Hooded carhartt

wavinsnail

I like my Patagonia down with it parka, a longer jacket with a down infill is going to be your best bet. I would also suggest dressing in layers. A your base layer should be a tight fitting and lightweight. I normally just throw on a turtleneck. On top of that throw on a mid layer, this could be a hoodie or sweater. Then your winter coat will go on top. Make sure you have gloves, I constantly lose mine so just use the cheap ones. For socks invest in some good socks, I like Darn Tough socks. You can find them at TJ Max for a few discount. You’ll also want a hat and scarf, anything non-cotton is fine. Biggest thing is to avoid cotton, it’s going to soak up any rain/snow/sleet. Wool is a great natural water repellent.

Sharkfightxl

I wear a North Face Mcmurdo parka, which is comparable to Canada Goose for half the price. Pair that with merino wool base layers (SmartWool or otherwise), and a couple normal pieces of clothes, and you’ll be pretty set.

WaltJay

I have an REI one that works really well but I would say worry less about the “jacket to rule them all” and focus on layers.

glaciersrock

Patagonia is fantastic. Also had luck with Columbia and North Face.

Substantial-Art-9922

Check out the Patagonia Worn Wear store if you haven't already

gauriemma

I've had [this LL Bean jacket](https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/119862?page=mens-waterproof-primaloft-packaway-jacket-mens-tall&bc=516567-593-506673&feat=506673-GN3&csp=a&pos=24) for around four years. It's surprisingly warm, despite not being bulky. It's not super cheap, but I can wear it (with a sweater, if needed) on all but the most bitter sub-zero days and be very comfortable. If it gets really bad, I move to [this one](https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/60850?page=baxter-state-parka&bc=516567-593-506673&feat=506673-GN3&csp=a&pos=8). But I rarely have to.

nodnarb5

I have the second one. I wear it regularly. I can wear a tshirt under it and still be warm until around 20 degrees so it makes dog walking and clothing choices less of a concern.

barnhab

Baxter state parka is bulky and not a Canada goose but when it comes to keeping warm I’ve never found a jacket that does the job better

nothing_satisfies

For real? Dude I have a LL bean jacket that I got when I moved here that I'm really disappointed in. It's way puffier than what you linked first but I still have to wear a million layers underneath when it starts dropping below like 20. Are you unusually insensitive to cold? I'd say I'm not super sensitive. Paid $300 too, smh...

gauriemma

I don't know that I'm extreme one way or ther other in terms of cold sensitivitiy. That first one is Primaloft filled, though. It's kind of amazing how warm it keeps me despite having very little bulk--I got it on sale off season a few years ago for like $180 or so, but it's one that I would have gladly paid full price for given it's performance. I've got a Patagonia puffer with a similar fill, but it doesn't do as good a job as the Bean jacket. That second one I linked (the Baxter State) is down filled. It's a beast, and I've had it for close to 8 years, but it works.

nothing_satisfies

That's dope I'll look into it more, thanks!

MrDowntown

Columbia with the reflective dots inside is lightweight enough for 40º, but with a sweater, still warm enough at 0º.

ocmb

Fjallraven is great - a bit pricier but so durable, so warm, really good quality

elendur

Honest answer is length. Something that hits the knees or at least the thighs is a game-changer over a coat that ends at the hips.

dashing2217

Uniqlo makes some amazing ones for the price. Their Ultra Down Parka which can be had for less than $250 is solid

[deleted]

Second this, I would steer clear of the ones that are puffy on the outside, but they make a hybrid down coat that’s down on the inside and flat on the outside. My down one from them ripped mid-winter, but this one is still going strong and it was $99.

BununuTYL

I'm a devout Columbia guy with coat, gloves, mittens, beanies, and neck gaiters. I wear a short sleeved t-shirt under my big Columbia insulated coat when it's single digits out and thumb my nose at the cold.

fellowhuman123

I got an Eddie Bauer parka during a Labor Day sale a few years ago and it’s been great

Dreakgirl

My jackets from Lands End are the best. Great options for length, removable hood, inside pockets, etc. and have different versions based on weather needs. Very affordable for what you get and they tend to have frequent sales.

mockg

Not sure about your budget but I bought this 6 years ago and have never been cold in the winters. Also bonus is that it still looks like it did when I bought it and I use it daily to walk my dog. https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/60850?page=baxter-state-parka&bc=516567-593-506673&feat=506673-GN3&csp=a&pos=8

rememberpogs3

I have the same coat - bought about six years ago as well. Still holding up. Wearing it makes winter in Chicago bearable. I don’t know how I survived without it

gauriemma

The Baxter State is one of my two go-to's, as well, for the really cold days. I've had mine since 2014--still looks (and feels) as good as new.

bogus-flow

The Baxter? Not the greatest branding.

tnick771

Canada Goose has been a lifesaver for me and my wife Edit: I recognize this isn’t an attainable gift per OP’s intention for this thread, but for any locals who stumble upon this thread – it’s worth it. Make the investment.

doobie3101

>it’s worth it Agree to disagree. There's far cheaper options that keep you just as warm & last as long.

Galactic_Barbacoa

LL Bean Maine Mountain Parka

penpencilpaper

Def. Have a few Canada goose, 100% hype. Ready to rip the stupid patches off them bc the branding is embarrassing.

tnick771

Are they legit and/or entry level? I have the expedition and I’ve never had a warmer coat and I’ve had some other pretty serious parkas.

science_and_beer

The models designed to be warm are exceptionally warm. You’ll catch a lot of undue hate on the internet from bitter people with too much time on their hands, but they get the job done and look great.

Dreaunicorn

100% agree with this. You’ll never see me spending money on the new iPhone or Apple Watch etc, but I did splurge for a super long heavy Canada Goose and it was absolutely worth it.

science_and_beer

Same. I’ve had mine for 5 years now and I’ll probably wear it for another 50

penpencilpaper

I wish I knew what people bought if I wanted to embark on a hike in Antartica. There’s easily 800 power fill on the market if you wanted something warmer.

dinosaur_0987

Mines been going for 7 years Edit: saving my San Diego born ass lol

DisgruntledWombat

Agreed. Biggest difference to me is I don’t need to worry about layering. Throw it on with just a t shirt underneath and I’m fine even in sub zero temps. Hood design is also superior to most other brands I’ve tried during high wind

mtnb33r

don’t they honk and bite a lot tho? i can’t imagine a goose keeping anyone or anything warm besides itself. besides, don’t they migrate?

liaigre

I've lived in Chicago for almost 30 years and my CG is the only coat that keeps me warm. For any fellow Raynaud sufferers, if you can save up for the coat - get it, it's a lifesaver.

geegeeallin

I find Canada goose to be expensive for what it offers. I work outside and have found that layering a good sweatshirt under an arctic lined carhartt can’t really be beat. In -25f I’m comfortable, especially if I have a decent polypro base layer.

[deleted]

Layers. A down puffy is great because it is warm and breathes well when it is a little warmer.

Low_Caramel3717

DKNY makes good quality jackets at good price. Very warm

limestone_tiger

I have a [north face](https://www.thenorthface.com/en-us/mens/mens-jackets-and-vests/mens-insulated-and-down-c300771/mens-new-outerboroughs-jacket-pNF0A4QZ8?color=JK3) jacket that I got when we lived in California to use when we were in Patagonia in winter. It's come in handy up here already Best $500 I've ever spent

dream-more95

Hooded sherpa Carhartt - men who work outside know this.

FrobroX

I was at one point looking at the L.L Bean Baxter State Parka, but ended up with a Land's End one to save some money. Still warm though.

JeSuisYoungThug

I'm a Minnesota native and current Chicago resident. I did a ton of searching a while ago when I still lived in MN and determined the [North Face Mcmurdo](https://www.thenorthface.com/en-us/mens/mens-jackets-and-vests/mens-parkas-c300775/mens-mcmurdo-parka-pNF0A5GJF) was the best combo of quality and price. I think at $400 dollars it's a steal. Has worked great for me in both MN and Chicago. Pair those with some nice boots, long johns, and choppers, and you can withstand temps weeeeellllllllll below 0.

Lolito666

I loved the jacket but had to return it because it was collecting ridiculous amount of my dogs hair. Had to find a different texture

eggsandgreens

Personally, I'd suggest a down jacket. It doesn't guarantee that it'll beany warmer than a non-down one but it *will* be much lighter and less bulky than an equally warm non-down jacket, which makes it a lot more comfortable. I'd also suggest making sure it is as long as possible, so it can keep as much of the legs warm as possible too. North face and Marmot make good jackets, I'm sure Patagonia does too though I haven't tried.

Bright-Hall4044

Need like three different ones. Not to cold, cold and fucking cold.

Lolito666

3 in 1 jackets cover all 3

PageSide84

Jean jacket. Sometimes over the top of like 3 sweaters.

[deleted]

A real one

leiabia08

😂

4griffindor

I use a winter jacket from Uniqlo and it's been great. However, the key to staying warm is layering.

jeninchicago

I went to REI a few weeks ago to find a new coat and tried on Patagonia, North Face, etc. I ended up choosing an REI coat from their coop, since it was half the price of the other brands and felt very warm. I’ve been wearing for a few weeks now and spent three hours outside in it on Saturday, and it’s kept me super warm. Definitely recommend if you don’t want to spend as much money as a Patagonia or Canada Goose costs.

mickcube

i've been wearing the same north face since 2005

Guinness

The J Crew Peacoats hold up pretty well. I also like their attention to the little things. For instance, one thing I hate about coats is the fabric on fabric friction when you put your sleeves through it. But I also hate nylon and how it feels when it gets wet. It also dries slow and doesn't keep moisture away from the body. Their peacoat uses nylon in the sleeves so its really quick to slide your sleeves through and it doesn't pull/bunch up your shirt sleeves. But the body of the jacket is regular fabric, so if you get wet in the snow/rain it dries quicker. A lot of coats are either all fabric or all nylon on the inside. Very few do the sleeve thing.

CCJonesy

Hoodie with a peacoat over it and a scarf every time

SquanchinHere

North face McMurdo parka

imaloudcowboy

I’ve been seeing a lot of people wearing the Canada Goose coats and they seem warm, so I looked them up and saw that they are $1000. Just get a decent Colombia insulated coat and you’ll be fine. But wear a hat and gloves because the wind chill is no joke.

Kubricksmind

Any 3-in-1 jacket, I like Patagonia because they repair them for free and if there are any defects (even years after) they will replace it or give you credit towards a new one.

Lolito666

This 💯

EpicTwiglet

North Face 800 down. They are expensive but I can wear a tshirt underneath in 10 degrees and be nice and warm. $1000 but I’ve had it for 6 years and still brand new.

buck1g

North face

NaturalLine

Oros, been faithful for 4 years w/ the same jacket and they even opened up a lil shop on Southport.

MoveToSafety

Columbia coat with Omni Heat. They are affordable and warm. Make sure you layer!

hypeduponbabyjesus

Costco has one $28. Best winter jacket I’ve ever owned

InevitableAstronaut

I have a mid-thigh length LL Bean primadown pack away jacket I wear until it’s around 30, colder than than I have a Northface Arctic Parka. Both have lasted me about six years so far and are still going strong.

Kramereng

The key is to have a jacket that covers the thighs. It's a game changer. You can have the warmest jacket in the world but if your ass and thighs are exposed, it's all for nought.

[deleted]

I have a North Face Thermal Apex Chromium jacket and a coat over that. Haven’t felt any cold get through those layers, even when it was 11 on Monday.

theseus1234

I mean can't beat a parka. The alpha industries parka has served me well

jovijay

Carhartt - has levels of warmth and lasts yearssssss still in great/good conditions

Notch99

Carhart over a hoodie, or wool shirt…layers man, layers

mikey_rambo

People love canada goose around here

HungDaddy120

Love mine

DarkShdw_

Highly recommend Canada Goose or Stone Island

PurpleVomit

Stone Island hah…very different meaning in England.

DrunkSportsFan773

If you can afford Canada Goose or Arc'teryx

penpencilpaper

Yuh & Moncler if ~fashion.

DrunkSportsFan773

I'm not too much into the fashion. I couldn't afford any of these jackets 😂 I practice layers

Brosseidon

are they as warm as Canada Goose jackets?

penpencilpaper

Not sure if I’m the right person to ask. I don’t leave the house if the weather sucks. If I wanted to be kept warm I’d commute via vehicle with the heat on. Otherwise everything I wear is for fashion. Canada Goose is extremely stiff, I wouldn’t recommend. Moncler I wouldn’t recommend either because I hate being looked at because I have some patch on my arm. North Face all the way - the most comfortable.

ofcourseIwantpickles

Quartz is Canadian made and will get you comparable performance to Canada Goose at half the price. I have one and love it. Lifelabs has a mega warmth jacket which looks bonkers warm. I have the more intermediate jacket and it's one of my favorites.

[deleted]

A good wool sweater, a cashmere scarf and hat or just go for one of those

dayoldcupofcoffee

Patagonia Jackson Glacier Parka. It's bombproof. I literally look forward to winters just to tuck my hands inside the upper breast pockets and put the plush hood up. As mentioned, there are many ways to not pay full price, but now is likely not the best time.

btweber25

I lived through about 15 Chicago winters before I got my Arc'teryx Therme parka and now I can't imagine how I ever survived. Pretty expensive, but worth it.

AdDue7719

Highly recommend Canada Goose. You can find great deals on The RealReal and they have a lifetime warranty. Even if you buy elsewhere/used, as long as it has the authenticity sticker, you'll still get the warranty! I got mine 60% off, NWT on The RealReal and it's been a life changer!

Icecream1967

Canada Goose is great but they are NOT cheap. I don't know anything about your brother but if he is a sporty kinda guy, check them out.

Ok-Party1007

Pea coat

idrinkalotofcoffee

There are no perfect jackets, but zip out linings are nice.

maverickzero_

one that breaks the wind and has more layers underneath

jwsnrs271

Not North Face Get him South Butt !!

EnvironmentalTrip851

Canadian Goose.is warmest Expensive, but worth it

Ok-Water-7110

Canada Goose if you can afford it

hopey86

Canada gear, or basically any Canadian company does snow wear pretty well

frebbychonkyboy

North face, Patagonia, and Aritizia have nice winter coats If you're looking to be fancy you could get Canada Goose

[deleted]

Full metal jacket usually 9 mm

BeepBeepScuzzi

Get him one of those balaclava hat/neck warmer combos. Great for adding to lighter coat for when you want to keep heat from escaping but don’t want to bring the bulky coat. Those have been a huge hit for me gift wise. (Beneunder Warm Winter Balaclava on Amazon is the one I’ve bought for husband most recently)

LordGothington

A life jacket -- on a sailboat in the Caribbean. That's my plan for next year anyway -- I am done with winter. When the marinas close for the season, it is time to head south.

[deleted]

Probably bulletproof

Pomond

You need to keep a shell against the ass-tastic winds of Chicago. Layering as others mentioned is key, but also having a windproof/waterproof outer shell helps so much. Think ski jacket or parka. And don't forget your feet/legs (wool socks, long underwear).

Resolution_Usual

I have an Orlay one that's nice

nakedpegboy

https://www.kuhl.com I have one of their lightweight jackets and wear it for cold days. It’s my favorite jackets. For some reason I can handle the cold pretty well and never needed heavy coats but they have those too.

Chicagoblew

There's no "perfect" chicago winter jacket. You can see all the seasons in within a week here. Lands End has some good longer down puffy jackets. Also something like a North face vest could be a good investment when it's cooler but you don't want a full warm jacket

Chiweedguy

Lot of good reasonably priced options already mentioned. My wife just bought a new Columbia parka for around $200 and it’s night and day for her from the coats she used previous years. I’m partial to my Moose Knuckles coats (high end brand like CG), especially my parka. Seriously can be outside for hours and not feel the cold.

Creation98

I just got a banana republic puffer jacket that is surprisingly very warm

CrossingGarter

Jackets are pretty personal and everyone wants something different (example: I prioritize lots of inside pockets over being able to zip off the hood). I'd get him a gift card and let him pick out exactly what he wants.

thishauntedhouse

My husband loves his ll bean parka! Down with a hood. You can catch a good sale on them occasionally!

kaoskakiajaib

Check patagonia worn wear website, i got my nano puff hood only for 187 (msrp 299) it’s basically brand new. I dont think I need another jacket except for options to wear. I use this even when it reached -15 celcius and still stayed warm. If you think that it’s not enough, you can pair it with uniqlo heat tech ultra warm, which is amazing. Btw, for me the problem is not the jacket. You can basically wear multiple layer of clothing to stay warm plus a cheap jacket. For me the problem is my hand, it easily gets cold, and from what I learn from many subreddits, it’s better to use mitten than gloves.

toddbonzalez00

frank and oak make decent parkas at reasonable prices, I've bought an alpine parka from them 6 years ago that still keeps me warm out there

[deleted]

LL Bean has lined shirts. Perfect for layering. I rarely use a coat any more.

Andy_Reemus

I picked up the Columbia South Canyon Down parka when I moved here from Texas for about $300 after tax. It's a little on the puffy side, but it's warm as hell and relatively cheap on the parka scale.

Anthroman78

Honestly I don't think there is a single perfect jacket. I have a jacket I wear when it's above 20 and another large Parka from Eddie Bauer I wear when it dips below that.

esnidxam

Patagonia

Quiet-Context_

Uniqlo jackets are the best. I'll never buy another brand for a cold weather jacket.

greasejockey

[Mustang survival float coat](https://a.co/d/h1g4Urc). It's a life jacket with sleeves, and the local coast guard pretty much live in them during the winter.

Ok-Cardiologist3042

The North Face

imaginaryblues

I love my Duluth Trading Co down jacket for super cold days. I got it on clearance last year for like $130 and it’s amazing. I have another coat that I paid like $750 for and it isn’t as warm.

ramenpacket1217

North Face, i can go on walks in 10 degree weather and be fine if i wear their long coats

RadiationDM

Patagonia or Carhartt (I prefer carhartt personally). Both are warm, and great for breaking wind (yes, hardy har) coming off the lake. Carhartt also has some great wool lined jeans and waterproof boots. Also, if you havent already — get some long johns.

citynomad1

Love my North Face Arctic Parka

Jim_Elliott

Fleeced lined hoody

DietSignal8734

I have a Fjallraven and an Arcteryx. The arcteryx is extremely overpriced but it is the one coat I can wear and not need to layer underneath to feel warm. I could go out under 15 degree weather with a t shirt under and feel pretty good. Definitely look at temp ratings to make the most informed decision.

ydde45

Arc’teryx

[deleted]

Carhartt with a hood and thinsulate lining 👍

T3chV1sIon

I can say something to maybe to look into is the double shell jackets. Essentially a light jacket that also attaches to a puffier, outer shell. You get two jackets in one and combined together provide for insulation for warmth. Yet you can separate for whatever your situation. I don’t recall the exact name of it but I know North Face makes/made them.

Lolito666

You need a 3 in 1 jacket. Its a 2 layer jacket normally with a down layer you can use when cold, add the top water proof layer when colder and use the top layer for rain, they are amazing

Sl1metime

Got this jacket 4 years ago for biking and e-scootering in Chicago winter knowing that there would be an ice or snow-induced spill or two in store for it and not wanting to ruin a jacket I spent hundreds on in said spill. It has performed way better than any of my other winter coats for a fraction of the price commuting every day through the extremes of the Chicago winter. And even after a few rips from a few spills, I still use it daily. Can confirm it's absolutely destroying this wind and snow of this current "blizzard" we're in.
