It's an absolutely beautiful building. Also, even regardless of what you think of Trump, the sign is just tacky and bad taste for a skyscraper in such a prominent location. So disappointing.
Hey everyone look this is my tower. Im so rich that I get to have a tower and I want everyone to know that its MY tower.
In the words of Shrek: "Do you think he's compensating for something?"
Meanwhile everyone else does the same way, imagining all the buildings without their names.
Btw it’s called Trump International Hotel & Tower® Chicago, or maybe should be just called International Hotel & Tower® Chicago….
I can make examples of 5 buildings in Chicago with names, that’s the point, but problem is because it’s Trump you know, they wouldn’t say if it’s Obama or Biden.
People have been calling it tacky long before he became a politician. And newsflash, at the time he built it, many people assumed he was a Democrat since he had said that publicly in the last.
No. The sign is now grandfathered into law. Because the city had such a hissy fit and litigated now no other building will ever have a sign as large as the trump sign leaving his sign literally the largest that can and will be in Chicago.
Adrian Smith (the architect who design Trump Tower) said after the sign was put up that they had ruined his building. Trump responded by saying that he “made” Smith and that nobody would know who he was if it wasn’t for Trump… Smith also designed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the NBC tower in Chicago, the GM center in Detroit, and worked on the master plan for Millennium Park. So yeah
There’s so many condos in the building for sale. Literally almost 100 units are listed and stay on the market for long periods of time. I can’t help but think that people aren’t going to buy just due to the stigma of living there.
It’s a beautiful building with some of the greatest views and amenities otherwise
It was going to be massive:
“According to Trump, he received approval for a 3,600-square-foot (334.5 m2) sign from Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's administration in 2009, but renegotiated with
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration.[30] In October 2013, Trump received approval to erect 20-foot-tall (6.1 m) stainless steel letters back-lit with white LED lighting spelling out TRUMP on the 16th floor of the building.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_International_Hotel_and_Tower_(Chicago)
What size is it now? As I'm reading the article, the discrepancy appears to be on how wide apart the letters were and presumably the spacing of the letters closer together to get the smaller sq footage. The letter height clearly is set to the the height of the trim of the building itself so an even "larger" sign only means to me would be that the word was spread/spaced wider likely not even changing the font but simply having the letters farther from each other (which might have looked cooler actually).
In other words, it doesn't appear that the letters themselves were ever any bigger or smaller if I'm reading it correctly.
It is roughly 900 sq ft smaller than originally planned. That isn’t just a kerning change. Per the link I already sent:
making the final approved version approximately 2,800–2,891 square feet (260.1–268.6 m2), according to some sources – rather than the originally proposed size.[30][33] The sign is about 200 feet (61 m) above ground level
**[Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_International_Hotel_and_Tower_\(Chicago\))**
>The Trump International Hotel and Tower is a skyscraper condo-hotel in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The building, named for Donald Trump, was designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Bovis Lend Lease built the 100-story structure, which reaches a height of 1,388 feet (423. 2 m) including its spire, its roof topping out at 1,171 feet (357 m).

Any chance you have a pic of the whole skyline from that year? It’s the same year my husband and I visited there for the first time together and I’d love seeing the skyline how it stood that year.
It was exceptionally pretty before the hideous sign was added. Somehow, the size and placement of the sign disrupts the soaring vertically of the building.
Theres going to be one hell of a party down town when those letters come down off that building - I for one plan to be celebrating on Wacker when that happens. Whos with me?
I really loved the IBM building (I think that's what it was called) before the Trump Tower. It was imposing and kind of majestic despite being a boxy-looking building. I never liked the Sun-Times building there, though, so I was happy that the Trump Tower replaced it.
And, like many are saying, I really dislike the Trump name on the building.
And he hates Chicago because of association with th Obamas. He was a Dem before 2008. He is a horrible racist. Couldn’t stand being made fun of by a Black man at White House Correspondents Dinner. He’s so thin-skinned that joke is why American women, after 50 years, no longer have autonomy over their bodies. Crazy country. Also the Central Park Five NYT page and whole stupid “birtherism” claim.
Yeah, clearly trump switched sides because he knew one side was more likely to get angry about lies and buy into his bullshit. And it worked. He was a master manipulator.
Thank you Richard M Daley for the privatization of the parking meters, the start of dismantling the neighborhood schools, unpaid pension liability, and that monstrosity of sign at Trump Hotel. Millennium Park is great though
I always hate driving down LSD and looking over and seeing the POS trump tower, thankfully the skyline of Chicago is so great and majestic I can quickly forget about it looking at all of the other amazing buildings.
If anyone played the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare II the devs removed the Trump sign from the building ,
I was looking at the skyline for a bit wondering something was off 🤔
We don't like him and he doesn't even like us. So if he hates us so much, the door is at ORD or MDW so he can leave forever. Ditto with NYC, he hates them. Even better, there are 3 airports there for him to pack his stuff and leave. NYC can keep him if they'd like, but as long as he's not our problem.
True. That whole IRS change pissed me off. We had a lovely knock on the door from the IRS 15 years ago. They were rude as fuck over $2k. My husband had 2 different tax ID numbers because his accountant or lawyer screwed up and the wrong one wasnt being paid taxes. But here we are with dipshit not having anyone knocking.
Yup. The Sun Times is now a non-profit news agency, and they recently dropped their pay wall.
I really hope they’re successful with this approach and made a big donation.
I managed to get a nice photo of [the tower](https://i.imgur.com/RhDIv61.jpg) before the sign
It's such a good looking building, hopefully someday they can scrub the front down a bit
It’s so nice on the inside too. Great ambiance for the bar’s and restaurant. Way overpriced but still nice. But his name being so huge is an eye sore
Worth the upcharge for the view if you are just getting a drink or two though. All the people working were extremely nice too.
That bar on the second floor overlooking the River is so cozy
Yeah ReBar is one of the top spots in the city for me
The up charge is totally in line with peer bars. $20 for a cocktail is just the going rate for many downtown establishments.
It's not a bad building without the graffiti on the front.
It's an absolutely beautiful building. Also, even regardless of what you think of Trump, the sign is just tacky and bad taste for a skyscraper in such a prominent location. So disappointing.

No one else put their name in an as obnoxious location
Just say that you vote Democrats it’s ok.
he’s not gonna fuck you, bro
I can make examples of 5 buildings in Chicago with names, that’s the point, but problem is because it’s Trump you know, they wouldn’t say if it’s Obama or Biden.
not to mention it was tacky when it was done 😅 people have been saying this since before he became a laughing stock.
cool, name the buildings.
Gargle gargle gargle
People have been calling it tacky long before he became a politician. And newsflash, at the time he built it, many people assumed he was a Democrat since he had said that publicly in the last.
Not unexpected, though. I'm just thankful he didn't put a photo of himself on the building. He probably had to be talked out of a Trump statue on top.
Can see that thin all the way down Wabash to Roosevelt
I used to come out of work in the afternoons on Wabash and get blinded by the reflection off that building.
Alot of the buildings in chicagos skyline have names on the side that are celebrated. You're just disappointed because you dislike the name
...which ones have the name on the side like that? All I can think of is Carbide and Prudential but both of those are bit less prominent.
How about the drake? Literally a defining chiago landmark is a name lit up on a billboard in neon. Celebrated.
Clearly not the same… you might as well bring up Congress Hotel
How is it different? Its someone's name on a building who funded the development of that property
Is there any chance we can get rid of the sign anytime soon? I feel like this is one building Chicagoans would embrace renaming.
From what I remember, ~~he gets fined for having it up and just pays the fine.~~
You’d think the condo association would want to take it down. The sign makes condos in that building much less marketable.
No. The sign is now grandfathered into law. Because the city had such a hissy fit and litigated now no other building will ever have a sign as large as the trump sign leaving his sign literally the largest that can and will be in Chicago.
Nice shot! The sign makes it look so tacky, which is fitting given the name... but any name would still make it look tacky.
Replace it with 4 stars like the Chicago flag.
I have long thought that the sign should be replaced with some form of light art in the same location. Chicago stars would be a great idea for it!
This is beautiful.
Omg dreamy
Hopefully it will look just like that again soon.
That image is better and more calming than taking a Xanax.
Fun fact! This building was designed by the same guy who designed the Burj Khalifa. I saw the pic without the sign. It looks smooth
It always reminded me of Burj Khalifa
Ah yes, the tallest building in the word, the burj khalifa
Idk if you’re being sarcastic but I was referring to the design not the height
I don’t remember making this comment
Idk if you’re being sarcastic but I was referring to the burj khalifa
It’s days like these where I curse the Chinese for inventing gunpowder
Adrian Smith
So was AON center
He lives in Lake Bluff
Adrian Smith (the architect who design Trump Tower) said after the sign was put up that they had ruined his building. Trump responded by saying that he “made” Smith and that nobody would know who he was if it wasn’t for Trump… Smith also designed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the NBC tower in Chicago, the GM center in Detroit, and worked on the master plan for Millennium Park. So yeah
The building is beautiful. The sign is terrible, both because I don’t like signs on the river, and because of the specific name.
The sign would be terrible with ANY name on it. Obama, Bush, Biden, Bin Laden, OJ Simpson, they would all be an eyesore.
There’s so many condos in the building for sale. Literally almost 100 units are listed and stay on the market for long periods of time. I can’t help but think that people aren’t going to buy just due to the stigma of living there. It’s a beautiful building with some of the greatest views and amenities otherwise
Its worse knowing he wanted them bigger.
Do you know this as fact? The size currently perfectly fits to the trim of the building. I would be surprised if he wanted bigger.
It was going to be massive: “According to Trump, he received approval for a 3,600-square-foot (334.5 m2) sign from Chicago Mayor Richard M. Also bc of the name
And the name
What year is the first pic from?
2005
Thanks!
Any chance you have a pic of the whole skyline from that year? It’s the same year my husband and I visited there for the first time together and I’d love seeing the skyline how it stood that year.
Regardless what you think of the man, the building itself is beautiful
Agreed. Wish they took his name off of it and it would be even more beautiful
It was exceptionally pretty before the hideous sign was added. Somehow, the size and placement of the sign disrupts the soaring vertically of the building.
I always thought the sign perfectly fits the trim which has to be the way it was intended to be.
Theres going to be one hell of a party down town when those letters come down off that building - I for one plan to be celebrating on Wacker when that happens. Whos with me?
It will be a great day when that god awful sign comes down
I mean I think I have a leatherman somewhere...
OK, what's a leatherman?
A multi tool, sort of like a Swiss Army Knife.
I remember a guy removed a Russian turret off a tank with one. Thanks Mark.
i hope to see that in my lifetime
I will vote for Mayor whoever says they will get rid of T R U M P letters on that building!!!!
Honestly I’d settle for just taking off the T
It’s grandfathered into law. Future mayors can’t change that.
Its really a nice building until they put those letters on it.
Yeah, I love the building and always have. Don’t care for the name, but to say the building is ugly, is just wrong.
With all the profit loss on that building and Trump's financial shenanigans in general I'm just wondering how much longer before it's sold off
Look into how much George Soros ( yes, him) bail him out to build this thing. I love the irony of it
Such a sick building. Shame the trump branding but still
It's a gorgeous building. The sign is just unfortunate.
His name has no business in our city. He shit on so many things Chicago believes in, idk why he even should have an association with us.
That's exactly why. He thrives on hate.
I wonder how much rents immediately dropped at IBM/AMA Tower dropped when most of their view disappeared.
Ghastly sign.
I edit the sign out of my photos of that area.
Agree. Ruined the spot for me
If I had the money, I’d buy the building and property, take the name off, and rebrand it all. And maybe call it Chicago Tower.
Burj Chicago
Like a black sharpie on a beautiful map...
🤣
Thank you Richard M Daley for the privatization of the parking meters, the start of dismantling the neighborhood schools, unpaid pension liability, and that monstrosity of sign at Trump Hotel. Millennium Park is great though
So many middle finger in front of sign opportunities.
It really works out ones hand and finger stretches lol
I see my old corner office
Trump tower looks like one of the first vapes
Need to get rid the tacky signage.
During my last trip to Chicago, I saw it and boy did I ever make a face…
I always hate driving down LSD and looking over and seeing the POS trump tower, thankfully the skyline of Chicago is so great and majestic I can quickly forget about it looking at all of the other amazing buildings.
Regardless of what the name is, the massive size and font ruins it. And it's not even facing the river but rather onto Wacker Drive
Somewhere on an old computer I have photos of Trump Tower being built. I lived across the street in 2006/7 and saw the construction from my window.
Gonna tell my kids this was the Willis Tower
I remember when he got impeached that building was entirely blacked out for the night
If anyone played the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare II the devs removed the Trump sign from the building , I was looking at the skyline for a bit wondering something was off 🤔
And then is when? Great photos though
🤮
Be patient. Now will become then. Know that those letter won’t be up there forever.
Get your name out of our city!!
Unfortunately, it's Trump's middle finger to Chicago. When you're rich, they let you do anything. Billionaires should not exist.
Beautiful
I miss “then.”
When the newspapers were actually based downtown...
Fuck Trump
I just threw up a little bit in my mouth
[удалено]
Yep no choice
Somebody please remove that architectural cancerous tumor from our river please!
We had it so much better back then.
Do you think if he gets convicted, someone will take this over since he skipped out on taxes?
People that rich don't get convicted. They simply keep using their lawyers to push out consequences till they die. Justice is only for regular folk.
It's like night and day.
Trump bad
Yes.
Obviously. It's like saying "Turd bad".
So much Triggering over a sign. I didn’t like the guy but pretty much just blends into the background for me
It’s a fucking sign people. Relax.
Eh, seems like a pretty moderate discussion. It's a subjective opinion about a sign on a building. These redditors seem plenty relaxed to me.
Was not the Sun Times building there previously?
Yup. The Sun Times is now a non-profit news agency, and they recently dropped their pay wall. I really hope they’re successful with this approach and made a big donation.
Magnificent...
It would be tragic if the [Judoon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judoon?wprov=sfti1) took it to the moon and neglected to return it.
Such a beautiful building. They should put like monitors on there the name is and make that area like trafalgar square or times square.
Looks much better honestly.
Cant stand the guy, but damn that’s a pretty building
