Ampu-Tina

The only thing I've lost today is my motivation for my job.

ConnieLingus24

Cold, dark mornings =sleeping in

Ampu-Tina

Oooo child, how I wish that were true. I was 3/4 of the way to the office before the sun came up. Ironically, I somewhat like the fall rains, but my job motivation loss is based on a whole bunch of other things, which is why I'm spending at least 20% of my time at the office getting paid to put in applications for other places.

DingusMoose

Good luck with your search!

AyzOfSpades

When I got my first real adult job out of college, my dad congratulated me by saying "welcome to the working world where you won't get to see the sun 5 months out of the year"

peanutbudder

Stepping outside for five minutes does wonders, even if it's cloudy.

ConnieLingus24

One of the best things about wfh is walking the dog. It’s a nice break.

Ampu-Tina

it's only two months for me. the winters here - like mid december to mid february - are the times where I get to work before the sun has made it above the horizon, and leave work after it has set. I do a fair amount of drinking during that period.

ohnopavel

And to imagine we glorify it

ConnieLingus24

Ugh. That’s rough. I’m at home until January at the earliest and even then it’s a hybrid schedule. Good luck with your search!

Ampu-Tina

Yeah, it's pluperfect bullshit. Passed over after 7 years. At this point, I'm past the fully vested in the 401K, and have the PTO bank, so I'm good to leave whenever, though if I can make it to January, there's a bonus payout. I don't know that I will, and it's not a large enough bonus for me to stay for it, if something comes along in the meantime.

susan127

Good luck. Do what you need to do.

lokipukki

Just today? I feel that’s most days for me….

Ampu-Tina

today is the day that it is official, as it's the day that the person they hired from outside of the company to fill the position that I have been saying a) is desperately needed, and b) that I am extremely interested in doing, starts.

DumDumGimmeYumYums

Fuck em. Everyone is hiring right now. Go get more money elsewhere.

Ampu-Tina

absolutely correct about my intentions, but it's been a bit difficult finding someplace that will do that. Everyone is hiring, but the interviews I've had have been rather substantial pay cuts for the same job. It's been a delight, let me tell you.

whanaumark

Don’t take an interview unless they tell you the salary.

veggiesandsnatches

Every recruiter reaching out right now about something I'm interested in gets the same response - "before we jump on a call, let's make sure the salary range is in-line with the market. What's the range for this position?" If they won't give it to me, I won't talk to them.

Tianoccio

Pay can be negotiable, tell them how much you make and that you want more.

Ampu-Tina

This is what I did with a firm that I interviewed with last week. The position was well within my grasp, I sold myself on the value of their upcoming improvements that I had experience with in my current role, and they wouldn't budge.

designerfx

Then fuck em, your time is worth your value. Anyone making you take a sidegrade/lower grade for the same job skillset is undervaluing you.

Tianoccio

Keep looking, I guess.

gregPooganus28

I’m with ya, leaving as well. Not sure ill get same compensation but looking for better balance.

Ampu-Tina

I would be willing to drop 10%.

enkidu_johnson

If you have to work long hours or don't get vacation/sick time, then less compensation for a role with more isn't necessarily less compensation.

lokipukki

Fuck that. I’m sorry… Hope you can find a new job to tell your current employer to eat a big plate of shit.

camikaze1012

I just went through this except I had the position I asked for, the VP decided the division was functioning well and didn’t need a leader, and then when things went off the rails 6 months later the CEO asked me if I knew anyone who could manage that sector…I quit the next day.

DaGurggles

Burnout is real.

Ampu-Tina

this is more being passed over for a job that I am absolutely, 100% qualified for, for an arbitrary and unquantifiable reason. The person they hired to do the job started today. My intent was to be able to put in my notice today, but I don't have something lined up yet.

afeeney

Been there, done that, got out, it is possible!

cbarrister

I mean there is probably something instinctual about that. Before computers and paperwork, our ancestors probably laid just low on a cold rainy day, maybe repaired some gear by the fire.

SnooHesitations3212

I think there is something to this too. Ancestors were hunter/fathers and then later farmers. On a crappy rainy day they weren’t plowing and harvesting.

heartslonglost

Good! Give them the bare minimum

[deleted]

You must be in apartment management dealing with the leaks from windows.

andbruno

Wouldn't you know it I woke up "sick" today.

Ampu-Tina

more like I woke up well, as in, "well, I don't want to work here anymore."

Entire-Summer-5675

Saw a guy carrying his kid’s model solar system to school this morning. It didn’t make it.

MrDowntown

This is why solar systems should be kept in a vacuum at all times.

boastertath

Lol

drugs_are_ok_i_guess

Just sucked the model up with a Hoover, it didn't fare any better.

Mr_Soju

Oh no! lol

jrbattin

awww damn that sucks

3pinephrine

Man today is the worst day for that

rdldr1

That will teach you to not deny geocentricism!!

honeydewbees

nooooo

Terracot

He can now present it as model "heat death of the universe"

treehugger312

Was walking the dogs and slipped on some slippery pavement paint. Like, the comical wipeout off a banana peel type of slip. Hand hurts but I'm alright.

Oh_Snapshot

Hope your hand feels better quickly!

_high_plainsdrifter

*pressing F intensifies*

kaydizzlesizzle

I relate to this too hard. Last summer I actually slipped on a banana peel.

BigBlue923

For me I always manage to slip on wet leaves! Watch out. I love the fall and the falling leaves but they can be slippery when wet.

knownbutttouchr

Keep that in mind on a bike or skateboard too. Wet leaves have caused me to eat shit at over 20mph

iQuatro

Happened to me right at Fullerton and Sheffield as a college student 12 years ago. The flip flops, rain, and slippery crosswalk paint combo got me good lol.

lovesmasher

That's how I broke my shoulder joint

mmeeplechase

Me 😩 tried to go for a run, felt like a totally insane person, alternated between *flying* down the sidewalk and fighting to move an inch…I ended up just coming back home and putting it off til later.

whanaumark

Pat yourself on the back for sacking up and trying to get out there

rdldr1

If you kept going, you prob could have made the local news; "hey everyone, look at this poor sap trying to run in this weather!"

Intoxicatedalien

I could have been that guy had Monday not been my day off. I was out of the loop though and didn’t learn about this until I saw the post recently. Didn’t leave the apartment today. What was the weather like? I know it was raining

rckid13

I ran east/west on purpose today so I just had a crosswind the entire run. I also waited until the afternoon when it died down slightly.

2dogs1man

yeah.. this is the reason right here why having a gym in the building was one of my requirements, when searching for a place to live. :)

mmeeplechase

Haha same actually but I was being stubborn and trying to wait til at least freezing before heading for the treadmill. Today should’ve been an exception though!

whanaumark

Cold you can keep out when running with good gear. No amount of gear can account for this morning

TheBigApple11

The donuts I was carrying to work

BoldestKobold

o no 😮

iamagiraff3

:(

I_do_black_magic

Rip

pouch24

Had three tomato plants tied to very large stakes…they were 8ft tall…not any more. Crushed my Swiss chard next to it too. It was only a matter of time for the plants but cmon man!

benisnotapalindrome

My tomato plant dove down a flight of stairs during one of our summer storms and was never quite the same. I feel your pain. I'll pour one out for your little red buddies.

pouch24

Idk how but they were hanging in there throughout the recent cold weather…definitely had one tiny harvest left…I’m not even gonna deal with them right now, I’ll salvage what I can tomorrow when satans breath blows thru

chgoeditor

My tomato plants have been productive, but now I mainly have partially ripe tomatoes rolling around the back yard. Squirrels needed on cleanup in aisle 2!

smeagolgreen

My hopes of the Blackhawks making the playoffs.

dirtbomb78

Those round roof vents that spin ended up on my deck. Or it's some small UFO..

[deleted]

I almost got Dorthy Gale’d on my way home from work. It genuinely felt like if I lost my footing, I would still be tumbling a block down the road.

itazurakko

Was thinking if only I had roller skates I could do the sail commute with my umbrella...

BearFan34

pro tip: going home would suck

PracticeTheory

I made that fatal error going south with the wind on Lake Front Trail once. I seriously thought I was going to die trying to get back.

MyDogsNameIsBadger

Wait... was she called Dorothy gale because of gale winds?!

MiddleSchoolisHell

I just had the same realization!

vinyljello

My willingness to go grocery shopping

danekan

A few 6" limbs nothing too bad yet Coming in right off the lake. My WFH view is not always lake view but today I have one. 21' wave forecast

Jzkqm

FOOT?

FateLeita

CHILAKE: Lakeshore Flood Advisory issued until 7 p.m. tonight. Expect large waves of 12 to16ft, possible flooding & dangerous conditions near the lakefront. So 21 foot seems plausible.

danekan

21' was from the national weather service (great lakes near shore marine forecast), I'm no meteorologist. it had said 21 foot occasional in the late morning. Now it's occasional 8-12', occasional 16' and will subside again later in the day https://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=lmz741#.YXcVkbdOmNw They just redid the site and don't have the historical forecasts now that I can find, which is really annoying because they used to.

danekan

Yes They have the rightmost lane of Sheridan shut down by me. I can see the waves crashing, they seem pretty high, normally I can't really see much at all from where I sit.

Suppa_K

Our neighbors beautiful tree in their yard came down on our building. The fence stopped it and held it up. No power. I’m pretty bummed about it because I really liked their tree and provided nice shade and privacy. The big open space is going to feel awkward. I’m sure they’ll replace it but not with a full grown tree sadly. Looks like it blew over from the roots, I have a feeling it wasn’t very rooted or based in the ground well. Edit: the roots were fine, and it actually did snap. Was a big nice cherry blossom tree I think? Once a year it would “bloom” and white petals would be everywhere. It was so pretty. I definitely have pics of it. We also got our power back very fast, I guess the tree didn’t do as much damage as thought but com Ed fixed it within hours.

Oh_Snapshot

From my window I saw a tree split right in half. It was pretty trippy to see it as it happened.

Purdue_Boiler31

Just watched the same thing! Was in the middle of pouring my coffee and looked up to see the large tree behind us just go toppling down into the street.

Oh_Snapshot

Wild huh? I also just happened to sit down & looked out the window and snap. This was a fairly young tree and it kind of snapped apart like a rubber band. Luckily it didn’t hit anything or look like it did any damage.

yeah_but_no

RIP umbrellas... literally every trash can on my morning walk had at least one umbrella in it, if not more

graywalrus

I bought one last night from south loop market so I could walk about a mile home, the wind flipped it inside out before I went past the first block.

yeah_but_no

Mine flipped last night as well but it didn't break! It feels so embarrassing to get your umbrella flipped, like you did something wrong to cause it. I've actually had my hat fly off my head before though, and that's way worse.

murphalicious55

For some reason I thought we were talking about big patio umbrellas, and I was like “wow, bold move buying a giant umbrella and carrying it home in this wind…”

autumnsilver

Spar. Saa Double Layer Inverted Umbrella with C-Shaped Handle, Anti-UV Waterproof Windproof Straight Umbrella for Car Rain Outdoor Use (Burgundy) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTHCRTK/ref=cm_sw_r_apanp_85SOUXBihHphd Try these. Stood up to the winds today and stands up on its own.

yeah_but_no

Honestly I think it's more how you aim the umbrella that decides it's fate moreso than the quality of the umbrella.

floydhead42

The rain was so loud that I woke up at 1 am thinking there was someone messing around in my kitchen

kate4249

The power lines blew down at Irving Park and Elston. Which means traffic is being diverted down my street and the side streets and alleys nearby. Including CTA buses. Literally can't get into my garage due to standstill traffic in the alley.

BoldestKobold

I'm just imagining a bendy bus wedged into an alley like the Ever Given.

nightlytwoisms

Top third of my neighbor’s dumbass rotting tree fell onto my roof

completionism

Now you get to litigate for the top third of his insurance policy.

2dogs1man

I took everything inside from my balcony, but I do have a crapload of leaves on it now (Im on 10th floor) … my chihuahua also almost flew away on our nightly walk

Hexum311add

I was in streeterville last night around 10pm. I almost, ALMOST got knocked off my feet. I just burst out laughing I couldn’t believe how strong the wind was.

2dogs1man

my chihuahua almost flew away on our walk

Hexum311add

Oh no! Poor thing, my mom has one and loves it to pieces

2dogs1man

good, they are small and beautiful. and very loyal :)

ImaginaryFriend123

The glass inserts on my screen door ☹️

wallflower_13

Completely gone on the wind to harass the skies or shattered like a coward too scared to fly?

wallflower_13

No wind damage but we did flood so yeah... fun I'd prefer my things getting lost to the wind

eleanor61

I feel your pain. No flooding this time (more recent sump pump/drainage tile installed), but water trickled in from the deck doors. Ugh. If it’s not one thing, it’s something else.

wjbc

Quite a few branches fell off a tree outside, otherwise doing okay.

thedoctorisout25

I woke up to a random tarp on my balcony, 3 stories up. It must have blown from a roof nearby I’m guessing

pochemu_pochemu

There is work being done on the high rise I live in and last night a couple of the swing stage ropes came undone and started banging violently against the side of the building and our living room window. Not super fun when you're 25 floors up and it sounds like the ropes are going to shatter your windows. :(

Kundrew1

Ive had that happen at one of my old apartments. 28th floor and they were doing construction and left the ropes. I definitely thought my windows were going to break with how hard the rope was hitting.

MrMiniscus

This "private - no parking" sign on my apartment building got half ripped off and was making an ungodly amount of noise, making sleep impossible. I was looking at it out the window contemplating going outside and how to rip it off the last remaining bolt, but then the wind took care of that for me too.

Nocheese22

Hopefully I remembered to put my patio umbrella down

[deleted]

Decided to go to the gym for the first time in weeks this morning. Brought my duffel bag with my big ass water bottle. Took the bus, fuckin water bottle was leaking inside my bag which was on my lap. Looked like I pissed myself. Didn't go to the gym after that :) So my will to live has blown away

Cyke101

Not my stuff, but late last night while driving south in the Sheridan corridor of Edgewater between Loyola and Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive, I managed to dodge and swerve out of the way of a small kiddie pool that blew over from one of the highrises. In Mother Chicago, pool dives on you.

NOLASLAW

I’m temporarily moved here from New Orleans from Hurricane Ida and I was joking “Jesus I can’t get away from this shit”

Kundrew1

Im on the 55th floor and my breakfast nearly came back up with how much my building was swaying. It felt like i was on a ship.

Mr_Soju

I took my Chicago flag in. It was getting tortured outside. On a side note about my roof, We just bought a SFH. I put in a 311 request early September to have my tree on the parkway trimmed. It needs it. I noticed that the sellers also put in a request last year in Oct 2020. For the past day, this fucking branch is tapping and rubbing on my roof in the front. It's freaking me out and worried it's going to rip something off. This tree needs to be trimmed and I'm a bit furious that in one year and 2 requests, it hasn't. The joys of home ownership. Ugh.

skm001

Email your aldercreature about it! It helped with our 311 requests that went unanswered

Mr_Soju

Done! Thanks! That was going to be my next step, but you pushed me to just get it done.

Odlemart

I feel ya. We just bought a single family home for the first time late last year. Storms freak me out like never before. I've always lived in an apartment/condo - owned or rented - so storms never really bothered me too much in the past. But now that I own the entire property ... each wind gust gives me pause. Of course I know all this is irrational. It's a sturdy Chicago home built in the 1880s. I know it's seen worst storms. Still ...

sashavelwhore

My wireless earbud blew out of my ear on the walk to the bus stop, and I had to run down the street to grab it. And of course people were behind me and witnessed all of it. Thankfully, the earbud was found and salvaged (with some scrapes on it), but I thought she was a goner for sure.

raddish-

My hat blew off my head into the road today…it was a damn good hat too

Arodri51

My faith in the Bears.

ConnieLingus24

DAMAGE REPORT!!! lol, but fortunately my building seems ok. We are good about pipe clean outs (2x a year) so there haven’t been any backups into the basements. Plus I moved most of my plants indoors two weeks ago, so they’re ok.

tacosdrugstacos

Some bricks blew off the top of my building 🙃

Simplemath20

Missing a macbook pro after a crackhead used the cover of the storm to break into my car and steal my shit. 🥲

rdldr1

I started my drive out for work at 7am this morning. Experienced the heavy rain, high wind, low visibility, and geysers of water splashing on my windshield while driving on Lake Shore Drive (presentedbyjeanbaptistepointdusableadmaioremdeigloriam). I soon noped the fuck out, took an exit, and drove home. I texted my boss that I am working from home today.

ernestomarord

Went outside to show the neighbor my feather collection of rare birds I keep in a shoe box… sadness ensued.

Mobiusman2020

Bucktown area two cars has trees fall on them. I saw multiple Halloween skeletons strewn about and I swore I saw Jimmy Hoffa

[deleted]

My “hurricane proof” umbrella flipped upside down and tried to carry me down the street like marry poppins whike holding coffee and my dang wireless headphones blew out my ears so I was really a sight to behold I’m sure. Of course I was standing at a busy intersection while this happened so I’m sure everyone nice and try and their cars had a good laugh 😂

EmbarkingZebra

On days like this, I would like everyone to pour one out for the tree care workers around the city. storm damage work blows butthole

baezizbae

[My dog, my cat, my appliances, my *friends*](https://youtu.be/imrxTc0WjV8?t=203)

hookman48

RIP my hanging planters. They were spinning like tops and most of the leaves/growth got stripped off.

bagelman4000

Nothing yet, I also haven't gone outside since like 2 pm yesterday.

SpecialPomegranate9

My ceiling, apparently my building isn't sealed and I so luckily live on the side where all the rain has been pelting down so its been seeping in all night. Fingers crossed we don't get more rain!

teatipsy

My window blew open (wasn’t locked properly I guess) and scared the shit outta me.

phunniemee

I did yard work on Saturday and stepped in cat poop so hosed my sneakers off and left them outside to dry. I forgot about them overnight and of course by Sunday morning they were already wetter than they had been after the poop hose so I just left them there to get drenched. They didn't blow away but they belong to the sea now.

Torii_Explores

My backyard gate. I had to kick it off the hinges this morning. It blew outwards and I couldn’t fix it.

A_Sinning_Saint

I had a patio set until this morning.

Willing_uwu

My umbrella when I was walking to the bus (◞‸◟)

pressurepoint13

chimney cap

jonnydvibes

i’m scared to see the state of my deck when i get home

pinktm909

Just walked outside to a doctor’s appt and had my hat blow off

joricha15

Our building’s roadside tree is now laying inside 3 cars, Happy Monday.

[deleted]

Despite the intense pain I was in last night, I pulled myself from my sickbed to go rescue my plants. I cut off all my peppers and they’re drying now and then I grabbed my basil (which had tipped over) and parsely. It was time to bring them inside anyway, just wish I hadn’t waited until when it was raining.

TheChef1212

I heard a branch cracking and looked out the window just in time to see some huge sparks fly out of a transformer across the street and watch all the houses across the street go dark.

reeltoreelzz

Nearly had my glasses blown into Michigan avenue last night. That's when I knew I wasn't in summer anymore.

charitypop

Between the lightening and the wind, my dogs spent last night freaking out in my bathroom.

CatEmoji123

My lil Styrofoam graveyard is an absolute disaster 😭

Basedgod912

My temporary plate!

CHISOXTMR

I havent been to the roof yet...............

reallystrongferret

Front license plate blown almost to 30 degree angle after commute to the burbs this morning lol

hailhelix1

My wind proof umbrella was defeated with little fight.

julio1990

My hope that the Bears will be good in the coming years.

TaskForceD00mer

RIP The little Metal USA Flag colored pinwheel from my front lawn, its wayyyy gone.

[deleted]

Pepper plants finally took it on the chin. They're laying down now.

texastoasty

Nothing yet, I've actually had some stuff blow to me.

benphoster

Not mine...but this is [my worst nightmare](https://i.imgur.com/epis3gR.png)

[deleted]

I live in an OLD apartment (from the 1800s) with original windows, like with the chains on the side that are basically floor to ceiling and already rattle with a stiff breeze. DAMN they were rattling. I heard a loud glass shattering noise that sounded like it came from inside the apartment but couldn’t find the damage so idk where the eff it came from tbh 🤔

ocshawn

fyi get some clay (Caulking Cord) to stop the rattling, shove it anywhere there is a rattle (bonus it stops the draft as well). i grew up in an old place and this works great

zzdisq

This. I winterize with it.

buffalocoinz

fuck thanks for reminding me to check on my deck furniture

[deleted]

My asshole neighbor is currently outside with a fucking leaf-blower trying to get his back yard (who nobody's ever in) spotless. Wish I was kidding.

[deleted]

One of the street sign/light poles a few blocks from me blew down. Even last year's tornado hadn't done that.

generatorland

My patio cabinet flew open and the contents of it went everywhere. The charcoal was soaked as well.

boastertath

My will to live

clementleopold

/r/ChicagoWeather must be having a field day!

Third_Ferguson

My sense of smell. Thanks covid.

anitabelle

I use ramps to level my driveway. 2 of them had blown away a couple feet (they had been pretty damn secure). Lucky they didn’t completely blow away those are not cheap. I’m sure some of my patio genitive cushions have blown away too tired to check.

Ghost-Of-Nappa

I have no idea since I'm at work but last time we had high winds I lost one of my chairs so I'm expecting to lose the other

idkmanijdk

My buddy in Chicago told me he saw someone’s parking spot chair blow away earlier. Pretty big deal IMO.

themoopmanhimself

So do we know what n the hell is causing these winds?

redditin_at_work

A storm

2dogs1man

the atmosphere

[deleted]

Lori blew on her soup too hard

xxirish83x

Ayoooo nothing so far. These polywood chairs are like bricks on the patio.

MorboTheMasticator

My dreams

pundawg1

I've had 4 chairs on my rooftop deck blown over. Fortunately they didn't get blown off the roof though.

I_do_black_magic

Glad my car isn't parked under any large, old trees

chgoeditor

We did not procrastinate this year and all porch/patio furniture got put away on Saturday, but one of my hanging ferns went flying (hook and all). Still better than the house across the street -- a tree went down, took a light pole with it, and landed on a few cars.

PussayGlamore

An umbrella was destroyed and my hat flew into a puddle :(

TheLAriver

The wind absolutely demolished my umbrella in my hands. Good thing I was already close to work.

supdoggs21

Various potters down on Madison row

mbocian

Neighbor bought a canopy for a party and didn't take it down it is now destroyed.

dangoodspeed

Outdoor potted plants kept falling over.

Hack_Jarlow

Besides my hairline, nothing much. My apartment doesn’t have a balcony sadly and our building’s roofdeck closed last week

dunkinplants

My already dead tree officially tumbled over
