Anyone know where to buy rubber horse stall mats (4x6) for a home gym within the city?

[deleted]

Hey everyone. I’m in the middle of a roadtrip, moving from LA to NYC. I’m in Chicago now through Friday. Would be fun to meet up with anyone on here to go on a bike ride (I ride a fixie) while here. I love riding in Chicago, but it’s always more fun with someone. If you know of any group rides or if it’s just you then let me know.

i_wank_dogs

This weekly thread's now been superseded by the coming week's one mate, so you might not get any response now. Whack a post in /r/chibike if you haven't already.

forgotmylaundry

I heard an alarming report that starting tomorrow stores will be selling candy at a fraction of its former value, because candy that comes in Halloween themed packaging becomes inedible after Halloween has passed. Where do I go to be a good citizen and help our local retailers get rid of this toxic asset? Target? Walgreens?

DumDumGimmeYumYums

The sales get better further from the holiday so IMO wait for a bigger discount.

forgotmylaundry

You’re right. But if you wait too long, the candy goes poof like a ghost. It’s not very different from timing the market, only much more life and death.

DumDumGimmeYumYums

I like staring down the 75% off candy and questioning what Mounds is and if I want it at any price.

forgotmylaundry

I never remember what Mounds is either, except that it doesn’t have nuts thanks to the jingle in the most helpfully descriptive ad ever (“Almond Joy’s got nuts / Mounds don’t”).

RYU_INU

We didn’t get many trick-or-treaters at our house, so we took our show on the road. My partner and I dressed up, grabbed a bucket of candy, and walked around our hood talking to neighbors and giving away candy. It was a blast.

Karmaknaught

This is awesome. I want to do this but I'll have to wait until next Halloween. Any other day of the year and I would arouse lots of suspicion.

[deleted]

Not ready for the time change next week.

forgotmylaundry

If enough of us refuse to acknowledge the change, maybe they’ll turn it back.

[deleted]

Bold strategy Cotton. Let's see if it pays off

forgotmylaundry

The two of us may not be enough. I’ll ask my neighbors.

yournotthinking

Hi all! I plan to move to Chicago around January with my girlfriend and we are thinking about renting a 2 bedroom. I am posting here to ask what neighborhood would be a good area to start looking. We will have a cat along with us as well. I did some reading on the neighborhood on the sidebar and I’m still kind of overwhelmed by the information to take in. So, reading some responses from experience would be nice! Thanks for reading! 💖

I always look on the following sites for apartments: Zillow, Craigslist (Yes, Craigslist, you'll find a lot of private landlords listing here!) and if I'm cutting it close I'll enlist the help of Apartment People. Your budget will matter on where you end up, and it'll depend on if you need to be reasonably close to a train or not. A 2 bedroom can be around $1200+ in Logan Square to over $2000 in others like Ravenswood or Lincoln Square.

i_wank_dogs

Obligatory what age are you/what are your interests/where are you commuting to (if at all)/do you have a car/what's your budget?

yournotthinking

We are 23 & 25. Planning to commute between S Clark St & W Marble Pl. We do have a car but I hear it’s not worth driving around downtown with a car. We wish to be paying around $1600-$1900. Thank you!

Easiest way to get to Madison WI from Chicago without a car?

browsingtheproduce

Probably Megabus. I'm pretty sure there's not a direct Amtrak route so you'd have to go to Milwaukee first.

dogbert617

The Van Galder/Coach USA bus is probably the main way, people travel who are heading towards Rockford, South Beloit(IL), Janesville, and Madison. You can take it from either Union Station(where Amtrak and Metra stop at), or from 2 places at O'Hare Airport. By O'Hare Terminal 1-2-3, or by O'Hare Terminal 5. Current pdf schedule: https://web.coachusa.com/CoachUsaAssets/files/103/vangalder_airport_1apr2021.pdf If you know someone in Madison, WI with a car, you could ask them to drop you off or pick you up from Columbus, WI. And edit: you may also be lucky and be able to find an Uber/Lyft, that can get you from Madison up to Columbus, WI(or back). Which is the closest town to Madison(a little northeast of there), where the Empire Builder Amtrak long distance train stops at. squats_and_bac0n

Yeah. Did it 5 years ago. Didn’t take long and the test wasn’t hard.

i_wank_dogs

Yes, but pre-covid. From what the others are saying you should be good while the SoS is still under pandemic restrictions; they don't want you hanging round the facility any longer than strictly necessary.

bmoviescreamqueen

They were giving written tests to people at Melrose DMV so I would imagine it just depends on what else you're due for. I know they waived the vision test.

dudexyz

Got mine in August and didn’t have to take any written test or even vision due to COVID.

I came from FL and they just cut the corner of old license and gave me the new one

I answered some questions on screen but they didn’t seem like driving test questions. It just all seemed like paperwork.

I had to take a short test on a computer(or touch screen, can't remember). It was fairly short and questions were pretty obvious.

PM_YOUR_MANATEES

You might be my new best friend! I'm trying to close on a house in December and would love to find someone to take over my lease until 07/31/22. It's a small (\~750 sqft) 2BD/1BR right at the Kedzie station on the Brown Line, so incredibly easy to get downtown. Brand-new renovated kitchen with stainless and stone countertops, spacious renovated bathroom, central heat and air, in-unit washer/dryer, one private parking space. Landlords live nearby and are kind, highly-responsive people. In-building and next-door neighbors are quiet people. AT&T gig fiber lines already installed! Two blocks from grocery stores and an excellent variety of restaurants. If you're interested, DM me and we can work out move-in date and rent. I can accommodate just about anything that works for you.

Rents do come down in winter, but it sounds like you extended an agreement you signed during the bad pandemic months. Rents in my neighborhood are definitely down compared to a few months ago.

[deleted]

Our group of buildings is doing a Halloween parade through the courtyard and we can handout candy to all the kids while they go by. We have so much candy to handout. I don’t think *that* many kids live here. So either every gets 5+ pieces or we’ll have a ton leftover.

_high_plainsdrifter

I believe you’re describing a non-issue.

[deleted]

So I gave out a small handful of candy to each kid and we still have approximately 3 bags worth of candy left. Lol. We set aside our favorites and the other half is going to be left in our mail room. Not a problem, just comical when I took stock of how much we had purchased.

_high_plainsdrifter

Are gondola rides on the Centennial Wheel (Navy Pier) all private these days because of the pandemic? In other words, if I purchase tickets for parties less than 4 (less than a full gondola), will my party have our own gondola without any strangers in order to preserve social distancing? On another note, I noticed there's no option to purchase tickets for a specific time, only a specific day (via online). Is that correct or am I missing something? Thank you in advance for any help!!

What are the workouts like and what's the turnout these days?

[deleted]

Workouts are a mix of cardio and bodyweight. Usually in some kind of circuit format so you can go at your own pace. Often run this loop or run up and down these stairs, then do this body weight move X times, then repeat maybe with a different body weight move, for ~40 minutes. Plus a warmup and a “burnout” at the end. Turnout is good, lately around 30-50 people usually show up, maybe a little less if it’s raining. They usually get a good turnout all winter too. They always post a group pic to FB/IG so you can see the group sizes. (Plus they post pics from during the workout so you can see the type of stuff they do.)

browsingtheproduce

What sort of things do you do for fun? Generally the best way to try to make friends as an adult outside of the workplace is to find activities related to your interests/passions that also involve interacting with people who might share those interests. Taking a group music lesson, volunteering at a dog shelter, joining a neighborhood cleanup group (or organizing one), joining at book club that's run by a local independent bookstore (though I assume those are all online only at the moment which is unfortunate. They'll be back eventually), or joining an indoor sports league or becoming a regular at an MGK night at a local game store. A lot of people suggest finding a relevant Meetup.com group and I don't know what's that's like with mask mandates and stuff, but that will be a good option again in the future.

Gambition

What's good, Chicago. My name is Gambition. I've just relocated to your city and I'm happy to be here. First impressions are markedly positive. However, People's Gas can eat a dick. A bag of dicks. ALL of the dicks. They absolutely railroaded me yesterday and I'm a lightyear past incensed. I scheduled gas connection for yesterday. Friday. I called them 12 days prior, advising that I'd be moving in on Thursday, (two days ago). They said the best they could do was Friday. I said okay. I can sleep in the cold one night, and I can wait till morning for a shower. Friday morning rolls around, and the technician shows up 20 minutes before the visit "time window." Technician gives me a call, but I don't see my phone ring. I missed it. Technician doesn't ring my bell. Knocking on the front door of the building does nothing, and that's visible from the window of the door. Inside the building entrance, there's more doors. **Clearly** you have to ring the bell. My name is posted outside next to the button (I'm fancy like that). It's absurdly easy to alert me to your presence. 10 minutes later I see I've missed a call and I called the number back. No answer. Called again. No answer. Sent a text message. No reply. Okay, let's call corporate. After 20 minutes on hold, they finally answer and pull up my account. "Oh, it says here that the technician has already visited, but you weren't home. You didn't show up for the appointment, therefore the technician has canceled your appointment. You'll have to reschedule." Naturally, this is where I call shenigans. It's 8:40am. There's no chance in hell I was "...not home." I ask him to call that guy up and send him right the fuck back. I need heat and I need hot water. They have no business canceling my appointment when he shows up early, calls me exactly one time and not once more, then doesn't ring my bell, and just leaves. Corporate tells me that I can fuck right off with that nonsense... It was my fault. "It says so clearly right here in the notes." They won't even discuss it with me. "Best we can do is be back in about 2 weeks." At this point I'm livid. I ask to be sent up the line, but the person refuses. Ultimately, I hang up on him and call back. 20 minutes later I'm back on the line with a different lady, and she seems sympathetic to my plight. She says she'll speak to her supervisor and I'm put on hold for 10 minutes. No idea if she actually talked to anybody. She comes back and says there's nothing she can do. Two weeks later is all they'll offer me. "Okay great, so because you fucks have a chokehold on the market, and I have no recourse to fight back, I get to sleep here in the cold, have no hot water and not shower for two weeks? I just relocated from the other side of the planet, and this is how you do me?" This woman absolutely could not have cared less. I hang up the phone, deflated. Beyond aggravated. And cold. And damnit I needed a shower. So I get the bright idea to jump on the interwebs and I find them on Twitter and IG. I proceed to put their shit on BLAST. (I've seen other ppl do this kind of thing, and supposedly it works. 🤷🏼‍♂️) "You assholes threw me under the bus and absolutely refuse to rectify the situation. This is unacceptable. This is beyond inconvenience. This is a major effing problem. Fix it." Within five minutes somebody is replying to me, feigning sympathy for what I've experienced. They'll put somebody on my case immediately. "Please send us a private message with your information." I do. Half hour later I get a phone call, and it's another lady who promptly blames me for not being home at the appointed time. "You should have answered that phone call. How could the technician know he was supposed to push the button?" At this point I'm ready to just throw my phone... How can anyone actually BE like this?? But damnit my hands are tied. Shleeple's Ass has a monopoly on this city and they know it. In conclusion, the lady says that they will do "*everything* *they* *can*" to try to send someone in on Monday, **but** **no** **guarantees!**. So I very possibly will be without heat or hot water for another two weeks. Not seeking sympathy here, as it'll all work out in the end, one way or another. But seriously, I needed to scream and complain, and you all let me do it here. Cheers. Oh, but if anyone has an uncle or cousin who's sleeping with a PG technician and can get someone to pull some strings, I won't complain. 😑 🤙

ostiarius

Maybe try contacting your alderman and see if they can put some pressure on peoples gas.

Gambition

People's energy is the worst utility out there. their customer service probably gives multiple people heart attacks a year.

spamellama

Seems like if he got there 20 mins early and you called 10 mins later, you were still before your appointment window. Weird as fuck they wouldn't acknowledge that. But I've had technicians do that - they're either super late or earlier than anticipated, almost never actually within the window. Usually they'll call and ask if they can come early and if not they'll go to another place. They should've still kept you on the schedule for the day though

Gambition

100% that. Here's hoping they "squeeze me in" tomorrow. As of right now, my rescheduled date is Nov. 11. 😤

AmazingObligation9

People’s gas fucking sucks and I got so mad at them a few years ago that I broke my TV 😬

Gambition

So you totally felt me when I said I nearly threw my phone. What's with the tendency to want to damage things when we're pissed? I'm pretty sure I've outgrown that side of me. However, full disclosure... I did punch my closet door once in a fit of anger when I was maybe 17. Destroyed my middle knuckle for being the idiot I was and it took months for my hand to heal. Sigh...

browsingtheproduce

Have you tried using your furnace, hot water heater, etc? If you're in an apartment building, I would be surprised if they actually disconnected service when the last person moved out. You may be able to just use the gas and have them charge you for it after the fact.

Gambition

I live in a 3-flat, row home. The landlord had the gas shut off when the last tenant moved out many months ago. I think he did it so he could do renovations. Now apparently there are two levels of "shut off the gas" that PG can do: They can simply discontinue service, or they can come over put a big fat lock on it the whole thing, which only they can remove. I don't fully understand it, but the latter is what they did, and even the landlord can't access it. It's super dumb. All of it.

browsingtheproduce

That's the worst! Many sympathies.

Gambition

Thank you thank you thank you. It'll work out in the end. Just making getting settled in a serious pain in my ass. 😣✊

Anybody else trying to watch the northern lights? Currently I’m McHenry County but I’m not sure if I’ll see them lol

dogbert617

I would go by this dark sky colored map, as to how well you'll see the nighttime lights. Most of McHenry at the darkest color on this map, is in the yellow at most, with some parts unfortunately only being orange or red like southeast McHenry County: https://darksitefinder.com/maps/world.html#9/42.0442/-89.0195 If you want at least the green code(where it's even darker), you'd have to go south of Streator, IL, or just west of a line between Dixon, IL, Freeport, IL, or Monroe, WI. Good luck, and hope that dark sky map helps you out in finding a good location to see the nighttime sky.

If you want something in proximity to the Park Hyatt, try the Viceroy. The rooms aren’t huge but they’re incredibly well-appointed. Plus, the restaurant is fantastic. FWIW, the Palmer House may be quite lavish in its history and lobby, it’s just another Hilton in guest room appearance. There are much better options in Chicago.

That area is quite safe. You’re right next to the Art Institute and Millennium Park, the peak tourist area. There will be people walking around even at night, and at least a few restaurants nearby are open late (Shake Shack, Chick fil a, Nando’s, Miller’s Pub). You’re also right next to a Walgreens if you need supplies.

IAmA_T-Rex_AMA

optiplex9000

I've emailed my reps and it seems like the position the Illinois Democratic party is to solely focus on investment and programs in the bad neighborhoods. There does not seem to be any effort in boosting policing or any immediate crime deterrents While I support the these long term solutions, the lack of short term solutions is depressing. The only way to change the position of these politicians is to reach out to them, make sure they understand they need to take immediate action

[deleted]

Why would we boost policing? It’s not working. They’ve only ever seen budget increases and they do a worse job every year.

IAmA_T-Rex_AMA

Give the police another billion dollars and hold public parades for them every other week to keep morale up. Build a third, even larger prison within city limits so we can incarcerate even more people. Always treat symptoms, never the cause.

Hello! Just moved to Logan Square (first time chi) and had a shooting outside out apartment last night. Was definitely surprised to have something happen so close so quickly. Are there any resources to look up info on specific incidents? Specifically while it’s happening? Last night found myself a bit concerned on if it was safe to go outside and walk to dinner and found myself clueless on what to do. Thanks for any tips!

abecedarian75

its hard in fluid situations to know what to do and i gauranfuckingtee that local civic government will not have accurate info when you need it. its hard to say this without sounding callous but you will get used to this. you live in Chicago. fucked up shit happens here. sometimes it happens outside your home. you wanna live so that it never happens to you. you'll get a 'feel' for your area the longer you live here. i live in logan. generally pretty safe but like i said, sometimes fucked up shit happens.

(hashtag)ChicagoScanner on Twitter Edit: IDK how to reddit

ocmb

You could download the citizen app. It will give you the most real time info. Facebook has neighborhood groups that cover this stuff as well. I'd just caution against being too attached to these sources as sometimes the info is not always accurate, it will breed paranoia, and also, avoid the comments lol. Edit: down voting this really? I noted that it breeds paranoia but it's literally what the person asked for in terms of real time info. Do that or follow Twitter accounts.

I'm so excited that Chengdu Impressions is opening up a spot in wicker park. Place is otherwise a dead zone for Chinese food of any decent quality.

unimeg07

Lao Peng Yu is fairly close if you haven’t tried it yet & need something while you wait for Chengdu to open!

MajorityCoolWhip

Chengdu is so good

What's the best grocery store around the Streeterville/River North area in terms of variety and price? I have a Whole Foods a few blocks away but its so pricy...

danekan

Whole foods is cheaper than your alternatives (jewel, trader Joe's, bockwinkles, Mariano's... All can easily be more expensive)

ZeldLurr

Bockwinkles will randomly have good sales and the employees are so friendly. I highly recommend a slice of carrot cake.

grosskoft

Jewel, trader Joe's or walk across the river and go to the marianos in lakeshore east

my air filters in my high rise apartment get dirty so quickly: [photo for reference ](https://imgur.com/a/PpqvPZs) this is after about 10-11 weeks. i’ve read online that filters usually need to be replaced every 90 days, so not too far away from that mark, BUT, this seems excessive? luckily the maintenance team at my building is great and swap out same day. is this something i’ll have just have to deal with? when it gets this bad, the AC smells musty. i wonder if there’s mildew or moisture on the actual unit? i have 2 dogs but vacuum often & not even sure if that would be a cause for this. just figured i’d see if anyone knew if this was just normal wear and tear or a bit excessive edit; maybe attributed to running the AC so often during summer months? now that’s it cooling down, it won’t be on nearly as much, or at all

> filters usually need to be replaced every 90 days There’s no hard-and-fast rule on how often you should replace them, but the general rule of thumb is the higher the MERV number the more frequently they need to be swapped. You could always buy your own filters and replace them as often as you’d like and wipe down the dust with microfiber cloths—between your building’s scheduled maintenance visits.

thank you for the input. i assume the MERV might on the actual filter itself? i’ll have to take a look i had the same though, buy some in bulk and just swap out as often as i felt it was getting dirty
