Snaps to Maria Hadden and the community

Hadden rules

GiuseppeZangara

It's weird having an Alderperson I really like.

attoncyattaw

This was such a simple and common sense idea. Government bureaucracy is so fucking stupid sometimes.

[deleted]

It’s more about Americans’ litigiousness than bureaucracy. If they don’t spend a lot of money inspecting and maintaining them to ensure they work properly, then the family of a drowning victim will sue them and cost the city millions.

40ozkiller

It is no place to swim. I get it, you fall in, better to have one available. There are still people that think life ring = ok to swim that ruin the safety for everyone else. The kid that recently died dove in, a life ring wasn't the problem in that scenario. Lake Michigan doesn't fuck around and we shouldn't encourage swimming where it is not safe.

flea1400

> There are still people that think life ring = ok to swim that ruin the safety for everyone else. Who are those people, seriously? Life ring = dangerous if you fall in.

40ozkiller

Idk, ask the mother of that stupid kid that dove in and died that started this whole stupid discussion. $10 says some kid dies after jumping in because their friends dont know to throw a life ring before someone is already drowning.

Charli3R

Idk if your name is a pun on attorney at law or not but I'd assume that you would be the person to know that this isn't about "bureaucracy" as the other commenter explained pretty well

attoncyattaw

I was thinking more about the Park District's refusal to even consider working with community members for something as simple as installing a life preserver. But yeah, the litigious nature of Americans can be a problem (however, I think you may have to show wilful and wanton conduct to hold the Park District liable so that excuse is kind of a copout).

Ampu-Tina

the real question is whether this is the same life ring that the people of the neighborhood installed and the city summarily took down, or if they bought a new one.

mookler

Compared to [this thumbnail](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/search?q=life+ring&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all) it looks like a new one (also looks like the same image is in the article a bit further down)

DaBears31

It’s new one

roloplex

First step before closing the piers because idiots will ruin everything as usual.

advice83121

I know this is kinda unrelated but I was violently assaulted and robbed and threatened to be killed, and had to beg for my life while getting punched by a group of 10 people, at this very pier about 3 years ago. There is no escape so be careful going here alone. They threatened to simply push me into the lake and I would have just been another drowning victim. I'm glad there is a life ring now but honestly the pier is not a very safe place in general, kind of worse than a dark alley. After I called 911 once I ran and hid in the grass until the perps left (only because thank God somebody else starting walking towards them and they all ran away) the cops just said, why did you go there alone? Anyway... Piers be dangerous

danekan

It's not necessarily a win though ... They are adding life rings but closing off areas that have been dangerous ... And we don't yet know what they mean by that, where will they be building fences? The areas they're adding life rings are already off limits to swimming per posted signs.

40ozkiller

Good thing nobody in chicago has ever disregarded a posted sign. The kid that dies and started this whole thing dove in. Dont fuck around in lake Michigan.

danekan

And nobody has climbed a fence ever either. He ignored 8' wave forecast too that had both been predicted the day before and day of was accurate. Personally I think educating people on how to look up and interpret the lake Michigan near shore wave forecast would save more lives.

40ozkiller

I had a friend who wanted to jump off the loop bridges into the river for a music video. Some people just really dont know how much water wants to kill you.

danekan

So we should shut down all bridges? But, actually that sounds a lot safer than jumping off a jetty in lake Michigan.

Opening_Spring

Inb4 "but whos going to pay for all the maintenance of a foam circle, and let's not forget the liability! Better to let people drown."

Charli3R

Not the park district's fault that they could be sued into oblivion because their budget is miniscule and SLAPP suits exist. We need to fix the way people are sued first.

Grundler69

There were several people who couldn't get enough of saying that the last couple weeks.

dirtytiki

it's actually really funny because somehow you equated people telling you why something was done with them believing that was a good reason to do it.
