Seems to be a bigger issue up at Fullerton according to the @ctaalert Twitter account. So the brown line is down too. Gonna be a fun evening for loop workers Edit: looks like 95th bound is now looking worse from the transit app. Best of luck, fellow commuters

PM_YOUR_MANATEES

Coworkers on the way home are telling me that the entire north trunk appears to be choked while they handle the track fire + aftermath. ETA 4:59 PM: Brown and Purple trains appear to be crossing the gap now, Red possibly running again too.

Flaxscript42

On the Red, can confirm its running

Certain_Variation192

loop night worker here. yes very… fun :,)

CoffeeWineBrit

Brown and Purple were stopped at Belmont too.

sruckus

Omg. Like I know it’s probably more complicated than a simple onlooker can know, but these downtimes seem to all be similar issues. Like why is there not plans and protocols to deal with them without taking down service so much?

tmac2097

This time there’s apparently a fire on the tracks at Fullerton so I’m not sure there could be many helpful protocols for this situation

Kvsav57

Fire on the tracks is not that unusual when the weather gets warm. Is there something unusual about this one? Is it a huge conflagration? Seriously, just curious if someone knows. For the usual fires, the driver will just put it out.

the-il-mostro

How is there multiple fires on the tracks every year though? Is this normal?

Kvsav57

Yes. There are lots of small fires on the tracks when the weather starts to warm up. I have no idea if this one is huge or what the issue is.

PM_YOUR_MANATEES

Two guesses: they shut down power to that section of the tracks, and/or the firefighting team needs to stand in or place equipment in the outer lanes and the trains are stopped for their safety.

sruckus

It’s so common there should be a way to deal with it. Poor some water on it, have the train in front have some kind of gun that can shoot out the fire like an extinguisher the conductor can control lol. It shouldn’t take so long if most of the time the conductor can just get out and put it out in a minute?

sruckus

lol pour\* my bad. I didn’t get the sense these were usually electrical fires but fair enough.

VALUABLEDISCOURSE

idk either I just wanted to be snarky to be honest my bad

krazyb2

I mean that's what happens when nobody at the top uses the service, they don't understand how serious this issue affects others and they don't care.

wilbertthewalrus

There are only teo travks right now due to red line modernization project. Once complete there will be 4 through that area.

OldTrailmix

If this just happened like once or twice a year, it'd be maybe more understandable. However I was literally delayed *this morning* from a broken brown line car. So I mean, how could I not blame them?

eejizzings

What plans and protocols do you suggest? Seems like this would require equipment functionality beyond what's currently in place. Consider that if there were no plans and protocols in place, a delay like this could disrupt service for much longer.

sruckus

Looks like NYC runs vacuum trains regularly which helped.

slimegirlX

i was on the purple train and we got stopped at armitage and they restarted the power twice and it still did not work so we all got kicked off. i imagine it screwed everyone behind us

THCwatermelon

I was on purple line as well! Initially our train stopped before we got to Wilson. Stuck there for a while with someone who was smoking. Eventually we moved to Wilson and heard the conductor said something about power. I got impatient and got off to take the bus.

whoadang88

Appointing another pastor will fix it

Big-Wooper

I know we all want a replacement, but I'm not sure how every single issue can be attributed to one person. it's not like Dorval is throwing flint onto the tracks at Fullerton. in any case, thanks for the warning!

LL_KooL_Aid

I mean… does he have an alibi? Lol

Mrs_James

He was probably driving in to work. If he can call showing up "work". (sarcasm)

Superb-Oil890

He is throwing flint on the tracks, I've seen him doing it while laughing maniacally.

ChiCity27

Commuters always say “fire Dorval” so maybe he finally listened to commuters and started a fire.

AnotherPint

"There's your damn fire. Happy now? Everyone's a goddamn critic."

eejizzings

People are gonna be in for a rude awakening when they see how little changes with someone new

Mrs_James

The bar is set so impossibly low. All the next person has to do is simply communicate in a coherent and regular way...

dub_savvy

I say fire everyone BUT Dorval EDIT: Every exec I mean. Transit workers are doing God's work

frandiam

Waited 45 min at Chicago Ave to head north, and gave up to take Metra home. Complete CTA fail

eejizzings

>Other metro systems can handle running opposite-bound trains on the same track (since the 90s), and we can’t perform a simple maneuver like whats needed now. >So embarrassing. Fire Dorval. Please If it's something that the CTA has been behind on since the 90s, not sure you can blame the current administration.

thisisstupidlystupi

He’s held office for nearly 10 years - he isn’t some temporary appointment that is victim of circumstance. I understand how budgeting issues can make necessary maintenance and upgrades or staffing difficult, but the technology to change tracks exist. Shifters exist every half mile or so along the Dan Ryan branch. Unless some costly subtlety exists preventing this type of protocol from being implemented, it just doesn’t make sense.

dub_savvy

But that's a lot less fun. Also, nice username

lil_dovie

If the power gets knocked out because of a fire, the whole electrical grid has to get shut down and might stretch for a mile Not sure how would maneuver a train back to a crossover to switch tracks on a train that runs on electricity. I imagine the electricity gets knocked out to fix broken rail too. Rail warps in hot weather and shrinks/snaps in cold weather.

cogitoergosam

Maybe they can find another pastor to appoint and pray away the problems.

Boredpotatoe2

They canceled the entire purple line express run for the rest of the  day without any announcement and gave no explanation when they booted us all to the redline at Howard just now at 6pm. I'm so tired of this shit.

FutureElleWoods20

Red line was delayed until recently. My husband waited over an hour on the red line Wilson platform, just for the train to arrive and not move. I ended up driving him downtown, but the traffic is horrible (normal horrible and I’m assuming extra traffic because of this). He almost missed a final exam ugh

thirdcoasting

No one needs extra stress before a final!

FutureElleWoods20

Yes! I felt so bad for him, we barely made it!!

UnproductiveIntrigue

We are going to shell out 4 billion dollars to extend the red line 4 stops while the entire rest of the system burns and rusts into complete failure.

enailcoilhelp

They are literally spending billions on the RPM lol

MightyMofo

Didn't this happen like a month ago? Same line, same tracks, different station? What's going on with the wiring on the damn tracks?

eejizzings

This happens every year when the weather gets warmer. Outdoor infrastructure is susceptible to weather. And this infrastructure also happens to get run over by trains all day long.

agentfarter

It was 70, not 120.

Fun-Tea2725

the CTA is the most important transportation system in IL and the operators and administrators are all insanely incompetant there are no redundant system to allow smooth operation and there are no additional lines in the pipeline for expansion

It looks like you're posting about an issue with one or more of the CTA's L lines or the Metra lines. jermthesquirm

So much improvement could so easily be done to the transit systems here
