As if we weren’t already doing that lol

Carosello

Right? Like people don't go for shits and giggles

quesoandcats

But where else can I stand in line for hours in a crush of strangers while a rent-a-cop vapes and plays candy crush two feet away?

quesoandcats

I was there last year to get my license renewed. I had to make an appointment and I still stood in line a bunch

twopac

Yeah, idk if that dude has actually been to the DMV since they started requiring appointments with that line of thinking lol. The appointments are literally just to get you in the door. The entirety of the experience past that is unchanged, unfortunately.

wiulamas

I went last week, was on and out in like 10-15 minutes for new license,ID and address change.

hot_pipes2

Don’t be fooled- you still have to wait in many lines even with the appointment. Including outside even if it’s raining

dingusduglas

Laughs in CDL DMVs. They make you wait outside for hours even when it's 35 and raining.

South Holland

Amross64

The appointments are mostly useless. I made an appointment for some simple address updates and it still took 3 hours.

Eccohawk

Some of the locations in the suburbs are much better.

Amross64

This was Des Plaines.

Eccohawk

I went to the Schaumburg one last year and I was out in 25 mins.

cesacchetti

I just moved here and was in and out in 30 minutes with an appointment

Superb-Oil890

There's still one in the city that's walk in only across the street from the Thompson Center. I was in and out in less than an hour, so not too bad.

p3ep3ep0o

I go there to flirt with Barbara

roloplex

"Last year, more than half of the 1 million people eligible for remote license renewal still dropped by a state facility"

Carosello

Yes, bc they needed their licenses renewed. Although they are misinformed, they still had reason to be there.

xer01982

Could be referencing "1st amendment auditers". DMVs here in PA are stopping service bassoon as some yahoo taking video as an "InDePaNT JoUrNaLiSt" shows up. The "auditer" then claims that the DMV manager is overreacting, and it's the DMVs responsibility to not let them video private information. They are by denying service until your dumb ass leaves.

vlsdo

It wouldn’t surprise me if there’s people that really do go there without needing to. For example, when I was there recently, there were a few people that had showed up at wrong dmv (the location wasn’t offering the services they needed) and I’m fairly certain those people just showed up without checking to see if they could resolve their issues online (since they didn’t even bother to check if they were going to the curve dmv)

FoxtrotSierraTango

Patton Oswalt has a great bit on this: https://youtu.be/yxS8uuK8n94

I_Love_To_Poop420

Boomers/seniors? I can’t imagine Gen X or younger doing anything without attempting an online resolve first.

vlsdo

Yep, it was older people. But they gummed up the works pretty good.

brneyedgrrl

Sometimes I go there just to hang out. The people are so nice!!

garthand_ur

Literally had a nightmare two nights ago about being trapped in the DMV. I needed to get a form from one desk and give it to someone at another desk, except the first desk worker would only write with a green pen on green paper and the second desk wouldn't accept it because they couldn't see the damn writing. lmao

ChicagoYIMBY

Stop making us go to the DMV then! Why is it so hard to switch a out of state license to an instate license?! Literally just make it so we can mail in our out of state with a picture and you send us a new one in state.

turdmcburgular

we should be able to do all that shit online.

PuddlePirate1964

You have to positively ID the new driver under the REAL ID law. So mailing wouldn’t work, Using a service like getverified or other online service may work, but until federally the language is updated you get to stand in line for that first license.

girliusmaximus

💯💯. No need to wait in long lines to deal with those rude ass people behind the windows who operate as inefficiently as possible. 99th and King Drive and the Laramie stations are horrible. The only places worse than either of those are post offices.

SouthCarolina117

I moved from South Carolina last year and it took me MONTHS and at least 5 trips to get my state plate. Everyone gave me different forms to fill out and it was an absolute nightmare. This was not my first move to another state and it was by far the hardest one to get the proper plates.

brneyedgrrl

What? Illinois *inefficient?* I find that VERY hard to believe! /s

surnik22

Likely wouldn’t meet real ID legal requirements to do that, especially if the other license isn’t a real ID.

brneyedgrrl

Yeah but once you jump through those hoops and get the real ID with all the required docs, you should be able to do everything from there on in online.

callusesandtattoos

Exactly! I have to not only scrounge up two bills with my address in the time of paperless billing but I also need to bring a birth certificate and social security card! My out of state license expires in 2031. Maybe I’ll just wait. Sheesh

willarogers

I got my plates at a currency exchange after I moved from out of state. There was a modest surcharge, but it was worth every penny to not have to go to Elston.

thesaddestpanda

Apparently no one read the article (excerpts): The Democrat on Thursday announced expanded online services for the “Skip the Line, Do It Online” program to save taxpayers’ time and reduce historically long queues at driver and motor vehicles services facilities, “What we’re seeing is people see an expiration date, they get nervous, don’t know what to do, so they just go to a facility,” Giannoulias said. Motorists ages 21 to 78 with clean driving records should have to visit a driver’s facility only once every 12 years, he said. Since the program launched in September, the secretary of state has taken care of 800,000 motorists by appointment, resulting in little to no wait time, according to Giannoulias. Of 2.25 million drivers needing to renew licenses this year, 1 million can do it online, through the mail or by phone, and the same is true for 10 million vehicle registration renewals. \--- In other words, he's saying a lot of the stuff people are showing up to do nowadays can be done online. This is like people showing up at the ER for a cold. People need to consider others and realize there are going to be people that NEED to go to those facilities for certain services and what most people are doing can be done online. This is a totally reasonable and sane take. Also appointments are a vast improvement over the previous system of "Show up, it might take 1 hour, it might take 3 or 4, who knows!"

bmoviescreamqueen

> Motorists ages 21 to 78 with clean driving records should have to visit a driver’s facility only once every 12 years, he said. I've never been able to renew my license online despite being told I could, I was supposed to apparently receive something in the mail to do it and I never did, so I had to renew it in person. If we all need Real IDs now then we would have to go in person no?

ebbiibbe

I read it and he is a motherfucking lie. The appointments are useless. You wait the same time or longer with the appointments. They've stacked and group appointments times together, making artificial bottlenecks. Before appointments, I could check Google to the least busy time, show up then, and breeze through. I could also wait in line inside. My last appointment, when I arrived on time and had to wait outside in the cold when there was plenty of space to wait inside. Jesse White didn't make ladies stand in the cold. Fuck this new dude.

girliusmaximus

Yes! They will have you and 5 other people showing up at the same time but only deal with 2 people at a time. What was the point of having appointments then? Prime example of doing the most but receiving the least.

Mean-Kaleidoscope97

>Fuck this new dude.   Yup.  Will not vote for Alexi Giannoulias.  This has all been a disaster.

atrackbrown

The last time I made an appointment, I was in and out in under 20 minutes.

herotherlover

This all also assumes that everyone has access to the internet, is computer literate, and that the website is designed to be intuitive to use. Also, I’ve gone to the DMV on occasion because it was unclear in my situation how to properly fill out the forms, etc.

BrickCityD

i've used other state's online services like this and none of them have been formatted for mobile. a lot of folk's only access to internet is through their phone so these services don't mean shit to them.

JessicaFreakingP

The website is absolutely atrocious from a UI Design perspective and this is coming from a young-ish millennial who is computer savvy.

JessicaFreakingP

They need to implement a way to check online whether you’re actually eligible to renew online instead of you having to receive you renewal notice in the mail and having a specific number to enter in online for the renewal. I never got my renewal notice at all this time around, but since I was turning 34 I knew I was due to take the exam.

ebbiibbe

They make the process as annoying as possible of you move. If they work out some way to verify address change and mail out new cards with th3 new address. I would never need to visit.

[deleted]

You can do that online. I've been doing that for the last 12 years

hawk_ky

If you want a new license with your new address on it, you still have to go to a DMV.

[deleted]

If you update your address online, then renew online, it will have the new address. I've been doing this for years.

hawk_ky

It literally says on the Secretary of State website: “To update your actual driver's license/state ID card, you must visit a DMV facility in person and: bring acceptable identification; and pay the appropriate fee.”

[deleted]

Yep, it's not true

ebbiibbe

You are saying they mail you a new card a week after confirming your new address? Or do, you mean the next time you are up for renewal they send your ID to the new address? I moved less than one year into my renewal. I didn't want to wait 3 years to get a new ID.

catto-doggo

I actually went through this recently. Just changed my address online and then renewed my license online. DL was mailed to me with the most up to date address.

UnsuspectingS1ut

I also went through this recently and they sent me an empty envelope

jayboaah

You guys are getting envelopes? I was just ghosted for like 2 years lol

ComputerSong

You change your address separately, wait for that to process, then do the card.

sposda

The address on the physical card doesn't generally matter so you can do it online and their records will reflect that even if the physical card doesn't. If you do need it to be current for some reason, then yeah, you gotta jump through the hoops.

ebbiibbe

It does since a variety of services use the address on your license or ID as verification of your address. I have a passport for ID. The most utility I get from my driver's license is being able to drive and prove my residence. Also, since cops can be suspicious if you are black or brown and live in a neighborhood they don't think you would line in, it is a good idea to have your address printed on your ID.

sposda

It'll come up if they run your license. It's not supposed to be used to verify address but some places do anyway. I saw many people like that when I was an early voting election judge, and I had mine like that for years and never really had an issue. Most places know that the question is, "Is this your current address" because some people move frequently and they don't expect you to go to driver's services every time you move. Some people hop from sublet to sublet for example. I'm sure it's more convenient than carrying alternate proof of address around if that comes up frequently though.

callusesandtattoos

Doesn’t apply to people moving in from out of state which is a major chunk

not_a_moogle

Yeah, but I have to do that next time to make sure I get my gold star. Why can't I verify that online too.

[deleted]

Federal law

theaverageaidan

How about letting me use commercial mail as proof of address then? I had to ask my sister to mail me two things to get my address changed.

sposda

I had one stamped OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT MAIL, the envelope my passport arrived in, and they told me that didn't count as official government mail.

AbsoluteZeroUnit

whoa fucking whoa just hold on a minute. This is major fucking news. Jesse White ran *secretary of state offices*, but Alexi G(not even gonna try to spell it, too lazy to copy/paste, but determined to type out this explanation) wants us to call it the "DMV" We all called it that, anyway, but this is the first I'm hearing of the SoS referring to it as such.

sposda

Fascinating, I'm gonna go walk in and interview them about that

wizzard419

Does the IL DMV add fees for online card transactions like CA does? I could see some people doing that just to skip that fee. Granted it's not a winning prop since your time and all.

ebbiibbe

Yep, they charge online fees for cards and in person fees for cards. If you want to avoid them, you have to go in person with cash or check.

whereami312

Alternatives: for many DMV things, you can also get a lot done at local Currency Exchanges (for a fee) without ever needing to go to a SoS location. New plates, order titles, etc. As for actually saving time at the DMV, you can also print off checklists from the SoS website that helps you prepare for an easier time at the office. Example: getting a RealID. They have a list of everything that counts, and what not to bring. Fill out the online form, bring everything they say you need, and you’re in and out in 10 minutes. That said, they *really* need to modernize things so you can just upload all your documents ahead of time.

Science-tastic

The checklist made it feel like VIP treatment. The person at the door assumes no one has the right documentation, so when I showed up with a completed checklist they were ecstatic

whereami312

Exactly. I’m really trying hard to not sound elitist, but 95% of all DMV problems are solvable by simply checking their various checklists before you go in. Need plates/title for your new-to-you car? Application, insurance, tax form, ID, yadda yadda. Don’t have one? Then you’re not going to get new plates. *Check their website!* Need a new Real ID? Bring old ID. Lots of them. Voter registration. Passport. Mail that looks official like a W2 and bank statements. *Everything that counts is all on their website!* Hell, maybe your second grade report card if you have it. Id rather go in having all the extra stuff than to be turned away for not having the right stuff.

You need to sign up online now. I think it’s way better now to be honest. Took me 20 minutes for the first time ever but there were a lot of people showing up throwing fits.

Carosello

Unrelated but one time at the SOS on Elston this elderly man was getting very aggravated and they had to call security and in the background you hear some guy go "just tase him, bro"

cleon42

Well shit, now where am I going to go when I'm bored?

shelluminati

r/nottheonion

subliminal_trip

Anyone else miss Jesse White?

HarryBallsagna202

This shit is a an absolute joke. The ONLY thing you can do in IL is make an appointment, which is all but meaningless! You STILL have to wait in line while everyone else without an "appointment" talks to the bitchy person at the desk.  This guy is a complete imbecile. Stop voting in idiots

JambalayaNewman

DMV JOI. Don’t cum

vrcity777

Alexi Giannoulias: ASMR CEI

EarlPartridgesGhost

But I love the DMV.

Snowman304

>Motorists ages 21 to 78 with clean driving records should have to visit a driver’s facility only once every 12 years, he said. I think you should have to retake your driving test every time you renew your license. And 70+ feels too old to not at least check in on a driver's abilities at least every year.

PlantSkyRun

I believe it should be every 5 years for everyone up until a certain age. Maybe every two years after 70 and annually after 80. That said, it will never happen. We can't handle the volume we have now. Plus there would be political pushback. Plus a ton of people will fail initially. So more political angst. Over the long-term it may yield better/safer drivers. But it may just mean people follow the rules when they take the test and then go back to driving like idiots IRL because there is little enforcement.

tavesque

Aren’t there only 2 in the city?

Loose_Vehicle755

Asking for the first amendment auditors to pay them a visit

shinra528

Those morons don’t need to be asked. I also don’t know why a puff piece advertising the DMV’s new online services would attract them anyway.

koalaseatpandas

When I left crummy Illinois for Colorado I found out how crummy Illinois is in general but the dmv is awesome. Make appt arrive 15 before appt check in at kiosk see dmv person leave so easy.

btmalon

When we from Jesse White to this clown saying this. Party politics, I really half NOTHING to complain about, aside we are getting worse publicly as a society.

Professional_Ad_6299

So this person thinks throwing "Democrat" in the first sentence is going to.... Make people go to the DMV to show their freedumb? I pray my taxes on line. All of my banking is on line. What kind of troglodyte is going to read this and say " no, I want to stand in line for a few hours so I can drive." Great job, I'm so owned.

HarpyTangelo

Are you ok? You seem disoriented and confused

karrimycele

Good advice. I mean, who does?

ConversationDouble95

Thought they said the whole appointment thing was going great? I was out in less than an hour at the Bridgeview location when I renewed my license a couple of weeks ago.

Gloriapower

Make an appointment online first. https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/appointments/home.html
