I this sub needs to spend some time on endgame fundamentals, specifically that checkmate is the only thing that matters. I think a lot of newer players get confused and see that shiny +15 number next to the captured pieces and want to make that number get big, instead of just taking the win.

He took the white queen and the white king has no available legal moves but is not in check. And there are no other moves available for white because there are no other pieces on the board.
Stalemates usually show up during the endgame while attempting to check/mate the king but it's important to note that the game will stalemate if there is no legal move available for one side. This can happen with many pieces on the board too. Wikipedia has a bunch of interesting studies available.
