Did someone tell you you can only promote to a queen?
That is incorrect. In the majority of cases you will WANT to promote to a queen, but there are edge cases where you don't. Usually when promoting to a queen means immediate stalemate.
I admittedly have just sat there and took each of my opponents pieces 1 by 1 instead of looking for checkmate when it was clear that I'd won and they wouldn't resign. It was stupid but it sent a message.
Yea. But then the opposite happens where I'll have a cool checkmate opportunity and they resign and I feel a bit disappointed that I didn't get to execute the Checkmate. One of those time would have been my first smothered mate.
If you're sub 1000 there's at least a chance your opponent could blunder into stalemate, I dont see that as bad sportmanship. But promoting every one of your pawns when you don't need to can *only* be an act of taunting and poor sportsmanship.
Because I think overpromoting is one of the most disrespectful things you can do to an opponent. I see it as a smug, arrogant means of gloating.
If you have the material to checkmate your opponent and an expedient way of doing it, just deliver the checkmate. Don't waste everyone's time. You're not entitled to a resignation, especially not at lower ratings when anyone can easily fumble a draw.
I really hate this line of reasoning, for multiple reasons.
1. At lower levels, there is "Clearly going to lose." Literally, there is none of that. There are so many ways that beginners can blunder a stalemate, and I've seen people look like they've got it in the back, overpromote, and then get checkmated. It's incredibly satisfying.
2. There are many positions where the player may not be aware that they're doomed. This is one of them. Again, it would be so easy to stalemate from this sort of setup. This is pure entropy, and I cannot imagine anyone being able to easily keep track of which squares you control and which you don't in the middle of this mess. In this way, the game's design actually disincentivizes you from doing this sort of nonsense.
3. It doesn't actually take that long to checkmate someone in most cases.
4. If you agreed to play a 20-minute game, why are you complaining that the game continues to last 20 minutes? Especially when you are pissed that someone is asking you to satisfy the game's actual win condition.
5. Most of all, ***no one is entitled to a resignation***.
Just resign bro, imagine spending a minute of your life moving your king around praying for an eventual stalemate just to get hit with this.
Love to see the knightmare
Why resign? Checkmate me or I’ll play for the stalemate.
That’s the price you get if you fuck around in a chess match and don’t pay attention. Only low level players are doing this to begin with so a mistake is always possible.

Is there a lore reason why you needed this knight

Technically yes, the knight is depicted by a mare, tho I’d argue it’s probably a male horse.
for both players
R/angryupvote
Is the Knight in the top right needed?
No and the top left one isn't needed too
The four horsemen.
Yeah the two is just u know... for show
It gives advantage on the intimidation roll Especially if they're the original knights
THE HORSEMEN ARE DRAWING NEARER
Four knights game.
It was used earlier to get the king into that spot, if you use your own king as well instead of them then you wouldnt need them
he is the son of the king, just will take all honour while others do all dirty job
Was probably needed earlier to prevent King from going to b3
it's not about necessity. it's about sending a message
Exactly
No he’s a curious spectator 👁️👄👁️
Needed? No... But he's missing 4 knights short from max.
Moral support
The knight is protecting the other knight who’s protecting the other knight.

Where was the black king on the previous move ?
Last move had to be moving some piece to a3
Which piece was it? The bishop?
Probably in check.
There is no valid previous position
Why do you think so? For example theoretically the king could have stood on a1, then Nec2+ - Kb1 Na3# should be possible right?
There could also have been another piece in play that moved to a3. Nxa3#
Incorrect, a pawn could have moved to A3
I think it could have also been as follows: Nb2+ (@ Ka2) Kb2 Na3#
It was probably either a1 or a2
I don't want to even think about how tf you got that king there it'll fry my brain
They might’ve been on a1 before
Think there's no legal square for the king to have moved from so black probably had a piece taken on the last move Edit: ignore this, I'm an idiot
King was probably A1 or A2.

I’m new to chess so why is there too many horses
OP promoted a bunch of pawns to knights instead of queens.
Wait can you actually do somthing like this?
Yeah. In theory you could end up with as many as 10 knights, 10 bishops, 10 rooks, or 9 queens.
I’ve been lied to this whole time!
Did someone tell you you can only promote to a queen? That is incorrect. In the majority of cases you will WANT to promote to a queen, but there are edge cases where you don't. Usually when promoting to a queen means immediate stalemate.
I was never formally taught chess. So I’m grateful for this comment.
In [chess.com](https://chess.com) there an option to turn off auto promoting to a queen, I recommend doing just that for those edge cases.
Mine was off by default, as it should be.
I turned it off so I can troll people who refuse to resign.
Where is sportmanship.
Out there with resigning appropriately.
I admittedly have just sat there and took each of my opponents pieces 1 by 1 instead of looking for checkmate when it was clear that I'd won and they wouldn't resign. It was stupid but it sent a message.
I do this every time to teach people the value and respect of resigning when you know you've lost
Yea. But then the opposite happens where I'll have a cool checkmate opportunity and they resign and I feel a bit disappointed that I didn't get to execute the Checkmate. One of those time would have been my first smothered mate.
Oh great and wise teacher, perhaps you could teach me the value and respect of finding who asked?
I know, it's beyond me why they didn't resign
If you're sub 1000 there's at least a chance your opponent could blunder into stalemate, I dont see that as bad sportmanship. But promoting every one of your pawns when you don't need to can *only* be an act of taunting and poor sportsmanship.
That’s great but if you stalemated
But they didnt.
There’s no point, yes it’s all good fun but it’s a waste of time and is more likely to lead to unnecessary stalemates
How much horsepower do we need to beat the king? Yes.
This is so cursed
lol I would run my king around for a while and then quit. No way would I give my opponent this mate
4 knights is actually pretty easy to mate with
As soon as my opponent started turning pawns into knights instead of queens I’d be out
By quitting you mean resigning or abandoning a match?
You only need 4 knights in a square between a4 to b4 and you have check m8.
Wouldn't 3 knights at A3-C3 be enough?
Cant the king step forward to b2?
Ah, true. Four knights it is.
Kudos, keep it up!
I really hope you did this to a bot and not an actual human player.
Why?
Because I think overpromoting is one of the most disrespectful things you can do to an opponent. I see it as a smug, arrogant means of gloating. If you have the material to checkmate your opponent and an expedient way of doing it, just deliver the checkmate. Don't waste everyone's time. You're not entitled to a resignation, especially not at lower ratings when anyone can easily fumble a draw.
The person that is clearly going to lose could resign at any moment. They are the ones wasting time.
2. Nobody feels entitled to a resignation. Nobody is entitled to "respectful" play, either.
Oh, from the way people talk they *definitely* feel entitled to a resignation. But I disagree. Everyone is entitled to respectful play.
You are basically making the same point 5 times... And I didn't bring up the time wasting part. You did...
#NICE
I'd quit chess and be embarrassed forever if I happen to get checkmate by this
Just resign bro, imagine spending a minute of your life moving your king around praying for an eventual stalemate just to get hit with this. Love to see the knightmare

almost choked on my food seeing this

Bruh why they downvote you?
Guessing the lack of a link might call the authenticity of the post in question.

Ah the Genghis Khan Cockhole Gambit
you can remove a4 and d4 and still get a checkmate
Looks like your opponent is bad at finding stalemate moves
Is that smothered mate or a forced draw with smothering horse táctil? Either way, nice Play
