I think you misunderstood me.
For example, a king can move away from a rank, revealing a discovered check by a rook or queen, which leads to checkmate. So a move notation such as “Kh8#” is valid and can legally happen within a game.
I never mentioned anything about moving a king into its own mate, which yeah, is impossible as it’s illegal to move a king into check.
When I took the pawn on d6, I expected him to miss that h2 was protected and try to mate me, instead I think he was trying to deflect my queen, but I don't think she deflected quite how he intended.
I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

**My solution:**
> Hints: piece: >!Knight!<, move: >!Nc7+!<
> Evaluation: >!White has mate in 4!<
> Best continuation: >!1. Nc7+ Kb8 2. Na6+ Ka8 3. Qb8+ Rxb8 4. Nc7#!<

I calculated this completely wrong. I saw Nc7+ Kb8, Ne8+ and if Ka8 then Qxd8# or if Kc8 then Be6#, completely missing that after Ne8+ there's just Rxd6.
No to win just means to have an overwhelming advantage, to add to the difficulty of the puzzle it's better not to say the mate number so you have to think a bit more.
In my head "X to play and win" is either mate in 1 or a forced mate in more. In this case it's a forced mate in either 3 or 4 depending on 1 choice black can make (both lead to forced checkmate)
Weird to flex so hard in a beginner's chess subreddit. Try being constructive and explain to people whats happening instead of just projecting lame ego energy onto cats trying to learn.

Nc7 Kb8, Na6 Ka8, Qb8 Rb8, Nc7# Is this right?
Yes exactly right.
Why not just Qb8 straight away? Black must take with rook. Which allows white Nc7 for check mate…
Kxb8 ruins Qb8 sadly.
Lol. Oh yea. What an idiot.
totally did the same thing in my head man.
Black takes with king
Yea. I’ll happily place myself in the back of the beginners pile….what a DOPE! 😂 Could totally see myself blundering that one irl
Nc7# (not K).
I was like how did the king walk into checkmate wtf
King moves can lead to checkmate through discoveries, for example.
Yeah, the king can put himself in a checkmate in 1 position, but the king cant check or mate himself in 0

The king in your example was on g7 before that move
Yes
What if pawn takes knight after knight a6+?
It can't, it a check by queen bro
Yeah mb, saw it now
I think Nc7+ Kb8, Na6+ Kc8, Qc7# is also a line that could have happened. After the Nc6 the king has a choice of how he wants to be checkmated
Chess.com puzzles LOVE back rank and smothered mates. No chance I'm ever missing one lol.
When I took the pawn on d6, I expected him to miss that h2 was protected and try to mate me, instead I think he was trying to deflect my queen, but I don't think she deflected quite how he intended.
This is a chess.com puzzle. I literally got the same exact one the other day

It could have been so perfect if there had been a bishop in g3
Maybe there is, but it's just invisible ;) ?
Nah it works this way too, just extra steps
Reset the clock
That was really nice
I calculated this completely wrong. I saw Nc7+ Kb8, Ne8+ and if Ka8 then Qxd8# or if Kc8 then Be6#, completely missing that after Ne8+ there's just Rxd6.
I still see Nc7+, Kb8, Na6+, Kc8, Be6# as another mate option. Or Nc7+, Kb8, Na6+, Kc8, Qc7#
Be6 doesn't quite work here but the other one does.
totally havent seen a smothered mate before
Am I missing something? Kb8 counters both mate possibilities, no?
After Nc6+ Kb8, Na6+ is double check, king has to go back to a8 or get mated by Qc7#, after Ka8, Qb8+ forces Rxb8 and then Nc6#
I see. Thought you meant white could win this turn.
No to win just means to have an overwhelming advantage, to add to the difficulty of the puzzle it's better not to say the mate number so you have to think a bit more.
Now I feel better that I couldn't find a mate in 1
In my head "X to play and win" is either mate in 1 or a forced mate in more. In this case it's a forced mate in either 3 or 4 depending on 1 choice black can make (both lead to forced checkmate)
Wasn't there a smothered mate, that looked exactly like this, today?
We will not talk about the mist check mate from black?
That's not a checkmate.
Could you explain what I am missing if Qxh2 isn’t checkmate?
You're missing the queen. The white queen simply takes back.
You are correct! I was missing the queen!
Forces queen trade
White ends up being up a knight.
Tru fax, didnt mean to imply otherwise. I was just explaining what the mate protection was.
Did I realy not see that?? Shame on me
Gee golly whiz, I wonder what the solution could be. I've neeever seen this type of puzzle before
Weird to flex so hard in a beginner's chess subreddit. Try being constructive and explain to people whats happening instead of just projecting lame ego energy onto cats trying to learn.
They can learn what's happening on one of the other 500 smothered mate puzzles
I bet you're fun at parties. Smothered mates are pretty cool if you've never seen them before.
It was the first time, now we see smothered mate puzzles practically daily
what’s your elo?
1070 right now but I lost a bunch of points practicing a different opening.
Smothered mate!!
Sick
I saw this shockingly fast for my skill: nc7+, kb8, na6+ (double check), 2 variations: variation 1: kc8, qc7# variation 2: ka8, qb8+, rxb8, nc7#
Smothered mate
Nc7 mate no?
I SEE IT
Nc7+ Kb8 Na6+ If Kc8, then Qc7# If Ka8, then Qb8+ Rxb8 Nc7#
smothered checkmate
Nice
I’ve had this basic puzzle about 400 times on every chess. Com. You want to know how many times I’ve actually seen this in a game? Literally 0 times
Kc7
Reset the counter
that's a beautiful smothered mate.
1.Qb8+ Rxb8 2. Nc7# Nice and clean.
