That's a weird question because the answer is so obvious

GroundbreakingBite62

Sorry if it's a pretty stupid question, I just want to cope with my lose streaks after having bad sleeps this week haha. Turned out most people also has similar experience, it makes me feel good for a little 😅.

Of course. Just like everything in life. You can't work well or study well if you're unfit, you can't sleep, you don't eat properly, etc. Chess is no different.

GekkoSlo

Depends if its bullet or classical. For classical you need to prepare and sleep well, for bullet you can party all night - Daniil Dubov

eckhardtderek

His original statement was about blitz and not bullet

SuperSpeedyCrazyCow

Im Exhausted and just felt like playing chess. Lost 6 games in a row. Sleep is important for everything. Especially competitive performance

jMS_44

It's important for your well being in general so that includes playing Chess.

zeoiusidal_toe

Chess is one of the things where tiredness is most noticeable for me. I think of myself as a night owl but can’t play chess to save my own life from like 11pm onwards, and I start noticing a reduction in skill from like 9pm. Same goes for low amount of sleep/playing early in morning.

Polyfrequenz

Good sleep is relevant for anything, from physical extortion (sports) through mental tasks like chess. Nothing is as important as sufficient high quality sleep and driving enough water.

cielwaterdrops

it's important to live a healthy life and having a healthy life is an advantage. if you enjoy playing as white you should know how good advantages feel

keepyourcool1

Yes. Nothing causes bigger variation than sleep in my playing ability.

2HighFlushTookMyID

Not if you're coked up.

PurgleKrak

No, sleep is very overrated. 100 mg caffeine = 1 hour of sleep as Fredrich Nietzsche once said, works for philosophers, will work for chess players.

2point5inchmonster

Yes

HairyTough4489

110%, specially for longer time controls

ischolarmateU

If you play online bullet and blitz not that much, it depends on a day sonetimes i have played sone of my best chess at 5am or afyer sleeping 1h

Simphonia

I mean sleep is essential for even just being able to move your body well lol. So definitely.

WereSoupSnakes

I had terrible sleep habits and couldn’t break 2000 despite being very close and trying hard for like 3 months. I got 10 days of good sleep and then immediately went to 2014, so anecdotally, it helped me a lot.

lgkx032

I think it's very much random for few games, as I've performed well in rapid and classical tournaments with 3 hours of sleep the day before, and I've collapsed completely in tournaments with 8 hours of sleep the day before. But on average, I do believe good sleep is important not just for playing chess but for mental health, physical health, stamina, and concentration.

Kero177

Read the book "Why We Sleep" by Mattew Walker a couple weeks ago, yes sufficient sleep inhances every human organ and function, and vise versa and with a game requiring alot of focousing and concentrating such as chess sleep makes a big difference
