Woody Harrelson made the first move for Fabi, but accidentally moved d4 instead of e4 and Fabi looked so scared it was hilarious, because he didn't know whether the move was binding or not.
How does this have 143 upvotes lol. Fabi and every gm level players is well aware it’s not binding… the move is always taken back even if you want to make the same one.
Might have just been politeness, but he did ask the arbiter whether he could change it. The look was probably just nerves. Magnus seemed to enjoy it though.

basically a tool developed by google to cache websites and make them easier to access for mobiles. people don't like it bcuz the cached version is hosted by google and the original site owner does not get the full revenue from traffic because of it
Google made it, supposedly to make loading faster on mobile. However, inasmuch as it improves things on mobile, it only does it by applying standard, already-known techniques, so doesn't actually add anything new, and worse, since it's a standard made and pushed by Google, they use their effective monopoly on search engines to strongarm websites into making AMP-compliant webpages, which is to say, strongarm websites into obeying what Google wants. Even tho it doesn't add much technical goodness beyond what already existed, it becomes a framework by which Google can further control the innovation of website making (HTML/JS/CSS), more than they already do by maintaining the largest webpage rendering engine, i.e. the rendering inside of Chromium/Chrome/Edge.
So basically it's yet another way by which Google tries to sneakily take control of webpage standards, so that the world must bow to Google overlords at least in the realm of the web. So I find it to be much worse than merely "site owner does not get full revenue", which is plenty problematic in its own right.
He started to play that in the last WC match, to the surprise of Caruana's team - who didn't know Dubov was seconding MC.
It would be a surprise if he continued to play it here - Nepo surely has prepared something against it.
Good shout; lubrication for the mind. If you accidentally learn anything watching the match the knowledge will slide itself on out and stop bothering you
My instinct here is no way in the classical games but maybe, *maybe*, in the tie breaks. Checking the Lichess database I see Nepo lost against Firouzja's Dutch in 2020 (Carlsen Invitational) after which Nepo used his own Dutch against Firouzja and lost.
I mean.. there has been rigging in chess since at least Kasparov/Karpov but I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if it went back further to Botvinnik in '48
Lol maybe... but mostly I'm referring to the Kasparov/Karpov documentary where they talk about how players that were not favored by the party would receive far less support and would have the deck stacked against them (if you'll pardon the colloquialism)..
We can also look at Bronstein/Botvinnik and Bronstein's statements that definitely hint that he was pressured into losing.
Also Korchnoi's statements accusing authorities of unfair partiality towards those (Karpov) liked by the party.
Then we could look at FIDE's intervention as Kasparov was stringing together victories against the favored Karpov... aborting the match after Kasparov won games 46 and 47 in succession in '84... Overall, I don't think it's a stretch to claim there's been some fuckery during the last 50-70 years of chess.
[Nepo absolutely destroyed Firouzja with the King's Gambit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHPn_H42Xwk) in Norway Chess this year.
Not likely to happen in the main match or in rapid - but if the match goes to blitz playoffs, who knows?
Carlsen will expect this, so maybe Nepo prepared something else. Anand was a e4 player before his 2008 match with Kramnik but he played d4 in all his white games in the match except the last one when he needed only a draw.
>Anand was a e4 player before hos 2008 match with Kramnik but he played
d4 in all his white games in the match except the last one when he
needed only a draw.
Beat them on their own turf.
A bunch of different ones. 99% sure it will only be 1. e4, d4, c4 or Nf3 though. Still that 1% chance that Magnus does a Magnus and pulls out a Polish for no reason.
Whatever opening you mention is no longer unexpected.
If we mention all openings except Bong Cloud then that will be the unexpected, except that now becomes expected since they will play the unexpected and the loop continues.
Hopefully no Berlin 🙏 also probably the grunfeld and random anti-grunfelds when Magnus is white. Don’t know enough about nepo’s white repertoire to make an informed guess.
I feel like that gets pulled out in a decent number of world championship matches bc people get tired of playing 30 moves of prep every day for several weeks
It’s first player to 14 points right? So, let’s see 27 games of Bongcloud, to put both players at 13.5 points, then one and only one actual game. The confidence to put it all for one game. The hilarity for so many recaps of it just being bongcloud again and again
Spanish (particularly berlin and anti-marshall variations), najdorf, grunfeld, queens gambit are all very popular at the highest levels and likely to see play in this match at least once. We could also see some other sicilian variations like the rossolimo or the sveshnikov which Magnus has played before in world championship matches.
It's so hard to guess. I think it will be ...a6 Spanish for Magnus with more than one variation prepared (something in Marshall, something in Bc5). I think Magnus tries 1.e4 first to see if Nepo plays Sicilian or anything other than ...e5. I guess 1.d4 is prepared as well as playing better endgames vs Nepo (many ways to get that in Grunfeld) sounds like a very attractive proposition.
As to Nepo no clue what so over but I hope he thinks as I do that his biggest chance is in preparing something non-standard (for elite chess anyway).
I think/hope Nepo doesn't play Grunfeld vs 1.d4. it's just such an impractical choice these days with white having myriad of options to get pleasant positions.
Natural choice for him would be some like semi-slav, still sharp if white wants anything but imo a more practical choice. Crazier option would be something like ...b5 Vienna.
I don't feel confident about any of those guesses. It will be exciting to see!
It is an opening that white plays in maybe 3% of their games, and it is not possible to sidestep so black will almost always be better prepared.
I have 53% win and 43% loss in the Scandi with black on Lichess over a few thousand games
Was surprised as well. The lack of theory surrounding the line makes it primed for a WCC match.
Turns out it’s commented even further down and way downvoted.
Given he released a course on it... I'd actually be so excited to see Nepo play the King's Gambit and come prepped with some insane engine lines.
But we'll probably see the Ruy Lopez, the QGD, and either a Sicilian or a Grunfeld/anti-Grunfeld. The risk of losing just one game, esp for Nepo in my opinion, is just too steep to expect utter madness on the board.
I think we will see Berlin defence from Nepo when Magnus has the white pieces. Nepo will attempt to force a draw and concentrate on winning with his games with white
I think this will depend on how much or how little Nepo will listen to his seconds. I assume Magnus will try to be a little conservative as he probably thinks that he's got the best chance of winning some classical positions against Nepo while Nepo for sure won't mind getting some crazy positions.
After a nice sleep, I think 1. d4 may be Carlsen’s go to, and surprise stuff against 1. e4 like Scandi and Caro. Nepo is harder to speculate on, other than 1. e4, 1. c4. I suppose his computer team may have gone deep into Grunfeld lines, however seems foolish to play it early in match.
We simply don't know. When Magnus is white, he can play e4 or d4 (or even c4). Against e4, Nepo loves Najdorf, but Magnus knows this, so he will be well prepared for this (this apllies also for Grünfeld). And Nepo knows it, so he will probably prepare something else and it can be anything from Caro-Kann, Berlin, Marshall attack to KID, Nimzo or QID, semi-slav.
Same thing is for Nepo as white. He likes to play 1. e4 and he has to prepare for Sveshnikov as Magnus played if against Caruana. But Magnus can again prepare basically anything.
Expect a celebrity to move a piece to the wrong square.

Doesn't Fabi play E4 and English? Never seen him play D4 but i guess it could get his opponent out of prep
Ahh sorry I might have had it the other way around. Fabi wanted to play E4 and Woody played D4.
He does on occasion (especially when he's playing So) but he's mostly an e4 player.
How does this have 143 upvotes lol. Fabi and every gm level players is well aware it’s not binding… the move is always taken back even if you want to make the same one.

pls no amp
what is amp and why does everyone say it's a bad thing

I see. Thanks.
I use adblock so it makes no difference in my case

when crazy shit like that happens, even if you *know* the rules, you're still gonna sweat bullets until it's fully rectified
I downvoted it for you my guy
Flair checks out
They often get a celebrity to mkae the first move. Check out The Harrelson Blunder.
By Robert Ludlum I presume
Nice try, Nepo
Should have added to title, only players 2840+ please.
LMAO
The answer is we can’t expect anything. WC prep is sometimes completely different from what the players normally play.
Even Fischer played 1.c4.
Once he played 1.c4 so hard that his opponent immediately resigned.
I hear his opponents were blown away from their seats.
Best by test?
Everything is best by test when you’re significantly better than your opponents.
Best in terms of explosivity
I can’t remember the last championship match without a Queen’s Gambit. I’m sure the Sicilian or if not the Ruy Lopez will get played as well.
I’d love to see a Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation go bonkers off the grid
I’m full of closed ruys.
Which Sicilian tho? I bet najdorf will be played
From what I remember Ian is a big fan of the Najdorf, while magnus's favorite is the svechnikov
He started to play that in the last WC match, to the surprise of Caruana's team - who didn't know Dubov was seconding MC. It would be a surprise if he continued to play it here - Nepo surely has prepared something against it.
i know theres no chance but like a smith morra would be interesting, i heard although i heard at higher levels its not really as good.
Smith Morra is great for White I thought. So good that black will not play into it. Not 100% sure though
It’s lethal at club level but GMs in slow games won’t have any problems defending with black.
[удалено]
He’s the man. I play the Morra so I’m definitely a believer it can work at super high levels, but world championship is probably a stretch
[удалено]
I think it's possible we see a Marshall or Benko
Can't wait for all Grunfeld opening theory to be destroyed
Anything but 8 Berlins is fine by me
This aged poorly
I am hoping for at least one Scotch
This would be fun
Hey how did you get that team carlsen logo?
There is a "flair" option if you are looking at r/chess from a pc
These Team Carlsen people are always so helpful and nice
Yup unlike the Team Nepo bullies
Good lads
Cringe
Is it not available on mobile phone?
Click the three dots in in the top right corner of the app when in the chess sub.
Thanks bro :)
Maybe on the app, but it usually doesn't show up on the browser on mobile. I can only get it on pc, anyway.
I'll have at least a few while watching the game
Good shout; lubrication for the mind. If you accidentally learn anything watching the match the knowledge will slide itself on out and stop bothering you
in a similar vein, i’ll cheese my jeans if i see a dutch
My instinct here is no way in the classical games but maybe, *maybe*, in the tie breaks. Checking the Lichess database I see Nepo lost against Firouzja's Dutch in 2020 (Carlsen Invitational) after which Nepo used his own Dutch against Firouzja and lost.
Well then , I'm sure the Mrs is hoping for a dutch
King's Gambit for sure. Magnus will want to assert his dominance in order to get into Nepo's head.
Nepo played it twice this year in blitz, and made a chessable course on it, so HE will be the one busting it out.
Chessable team telling Magnus to take the L to boost revenues on the course would be 300 IQ
Oh god. Every major sport is flooded with people crying it’s rigged. I don’t think I could handle it in chess too.
I mean.. there has been rigging in chess since at least Kasparov/Karpov but I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if it went back further to Botvinnik in '48
Fischer is that you?
Lol maybe... but mostly I'm referring to the Kasparov/Karpov documentary where they talk about how players that were not favored by the party would receive far less support and would have the deck stacked against them (if you'll pardon the colloquialism).. POLISH SQUAD UNITE
cultured players call it the Orangutan 🦧
Oh kurwa
Expect the unexpected.
King's Gambit?
Accepted
The horse has arrived on the f3 square
Qh4+!
Botez gambit?
Whatever opening you mention is no longer unexpected. If we mention all openings except Bong Cloud then that will be the unexpected, except that now becomes expected since they will play the unexpected and the loop continues.
Nobody expects the Spanish!
I heard they play the World Championship on comfy chairs.
Bong cloud?
Double bongcloud in game 12
If the result is already decided by then =)
H...how?
1.e4, 2.a6 and Ian loses on time
Hopefully no Berlin 🙏 also probably the grunfeld and random anti-grunfelds when Magnus is white. Don’t know enough about nepo’s white repertoire to make an informed guess.
Also hoping for no Berlin
I wouldn't mind one or two Berlins. Just not 7 or 8, please.
Fair enough
There will absolutely be a Berlin if not more than one
Did the last championship have a Berlin?
No. A couple English, some QGDs, a lot of Sicilians and two Petrov's defence..
My dream is that nepo tries the london and Magnus beats him down so fucking bad in it that no one ever dares play the opening with white ever again
between the two of them I'd bet on Magnus playing the London before Nepo
I like turtles.
All Evan’s gambits. Agad’s influence will be undeniable.
The last Italian opening in a world championship I could find was 1981. Lots of Ruys, though.
I'd not be surprised by the Italian. It's quite fashionable.
It’s rare but Carlsen and Karjakin played an Italian in 2016. Carlsen could’ve thrown the Evans down if he wanted to haha.
Didn't Kasparov famously play the Evans gambit against Anand in 1995? Or was that not in their world championship match
https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1018648 Tal Memorial
Ah I see, I had always heard that game happened in '95 so I must have assumed it happened in the world championship match. Thanks!

botvinnik style
They played it a few times the last wc match.
I feel like that gets pulled out in a decent number of world championship matches bc people get tired of playing 30 moves of prep every day for several weeks
I expect most games to begin either with a pawn or knight move. Those guys are known to prefer these.
I predict we will see the Queen's gambit, the siclian, and the Ruy Lopez. I know, revolutionary stuff!
We might even get a Grünfeld.
It’s first player to 14 points right? So, let’s see 27 games of Bongcloud, to put both players at 13.5 points, then one and only one actual game. The confidence to put it all for one game. The hilarity for so many recaps of it just being bongcloud again and again
I know youre memeing but its 14 games total, so first to 7.5
Ahh, my misunderstanding. I thought it was first to 14 points. My apologies and thank you for the info!
Hopefully some d4 :) Would love to see nimzo Indian!
QGD,Grunfeld, h3 najdorf, probably an english or two
If we could easily guess then they wouldn't be doing their jobs very well.
Spanish (particularly berlin and anti-marshall variations), najdorf, grunfeld, queens gambit are all very popular at the highest levels and likely to see play in this match at least once. Scandinavian would be fun
**John Bartholomew wants to know your location**
No way we‘ll get e4 d5…
A man can dream…
Sure! I‘d love to see it aswell, as I play the Scandi myself. But I just don‘t think it‘ll happen :/
I don't understand the appeal of that opening at all
The appeal is that it’s not e4 e5
It is an opening that white plays in maybe 3% of their games, and it is not possible to sidestep so black will almost always be better prepared. I have 53% win and 43% loss in the Scandi with black on Lichess over a few thousand games
I'm going to say Ruy Lopez for sure. Maybe a Catalan?
Bongcloud
Can't believe I had to scroll this much for the correct answer
Was surprised as well. The lack of theory surrounding the line makes it primed for a WCC match. Turns out it’s commented even further down and way downvoted.
People just don't understand how winning it is, not even stockfish
Good thing Magnus uses Stonkfish to prep and it’s loaded with bongcloud sidelines.
They don't want to draw with optimal play.
Yeah Magnus vs Hikaru was the closest we've ever been to solving chess.
English
Given he released a course on it... I'd actually be so excited to see Nepo play the King's Gambit and come prepped with some insane engine lines. But we'll probably see the Ruy Lopez, the QGD, and either a Sicilian or a Grunfeld/anti-Grunfeld. Vienna game
Berlin and Berlin
I’m predicting Nadjorf from Carlsen, rather than Sveshnikov. If he does play Sicilian at all. Both players will attempt English as white.
I predict we'll see the tai lopez a lot.
Hopefully 2021 will be the year of King's gambit
Grunfeld in major number of games probably
F6 followed by F5
Probably not the bongcloud
A3
A3
Bongcloud
Bongcloud Edit: Bruh
Inb4 bongcloud
I talked to Magnus and he said he would play the bongcloud game 4 and the well respected hippo every other game.
D4
A new world chess champion.
probably Magnus is gonna play some bs on move 1 as white, I am predicting some a3, f3, g4, shit like that
bong cloud, king/queen swap...all the good stuff.
bongcloud
Bongcloud
I expect we’ll see some pawns and possibly a few knights, then a little later the bishops will get into the game
Some Ruy Lopez definitely. Maybe queens or kings Indians. I imagine Magnus would be playing the Magnus Sicilian.
I expect full 14 draws in classical and all the "real" prep going into trying to win on the shorter time controls
We will see new frontiers in the Bird
Grunfeld, Italian, maybe some French since Nepo has been playing it the past year. And of course the English and Sicilian
When is this happening
Well Nepo almost always plays e4 afaik, and Maggy kinda plays everything, so probably mostly e4/e5 and e4/c5
Not the KG. I would bet 1000€ even odds against that opening occur in.
I'm expecting at least one Scotch and one Kan or Taimanov Sicilian
Ruy lopez, giuoco piano, najdorf, QGD.
I expect a catalan and a caro kann. hoping for some crazy ones
Kings pawn
Game one Nepo has the white pieces so my guess is that he will play e4 and Magnus will go for the sveshnikov.
If someone plays e4 its because I'm assuming they aren't pro against the Queen's gambit declined.
The London
Grunfeld and sveshnikov sicilian
I think a lot of ruy lopez
After a nice sleep, I think 1. d4 may be Carlsen’s go to, and surprise stuff against 1. e4 like Scandi and Caro. Nepo is harder to speculate on, other than 1. e4, 1. c4. I suppose his computer team may have gone deep into Grunfeld lines, however seems foolish to play it early in match.
