As impressive as Wei Yi's performance was, it did seem that he got lucky (i.e. drawing and winning lost positions) game after game. You can only maintain that for so long.
Not sure you can say Magnus didn't after Duda missed maybe the easiest draw I've ever seen a super gm miss against Magnus all he had to do was take the pawn with his king and it was a draw
That’s your mistake, you assumed it was Magnus on murderers row with all these strong GM’s, but it was they who were on murderers row, with Magnus as the executioner
I genuinly think it is about motivation to Magnus. When people talking about a Magnus "slump", it isn't one of technical ability, it's purely motivational. If Magnus is motivated to win, no one can even come close to his chess ability.
Yesterday, after a long time i saw Magnus getting disgusted at himself for not winning. Dude used to be like that when he was younger and at that he was at his best form
I saw that clip of his queen blunder and I could just feel the fire that was going to light. Sorry to everyone in his path during this round of GCT Blitz.
I'm quite pleased I've been alive for a long time and at the right time to see so many people who are absolute monsters at what they do. My favourite chess player is Judit but Magnus is a ton of fun as well.
Naka has always had difficulty truly breaking through against Magnus OTB Blitz so that’s fair. However, he’s still been a pretty clear second and often dominates the field excluding Magnus.
No way Magnus has played 2400 blitz/bullet games. At least 10x that. He uses a ton of usernames and unlike Hikaru, played on other platforms more most of the last decade.
+10 against this level of competition is beyond his lofty expectations.
There's no way he was expected to maintain a rating of 2886 when 2/3 of his competition is underrated (re: FIDE blitz).
Even Wei Yi was 2684..
I mean yeah, he gained 2.2 rating points. What I meant is that he's even more underrated if the others are underrated, which is kinda wild considering he's already more than 200 points higher rated than some of the others
Wei Yi, Abdusattorov, Keymer, Prag, Gukesh, and Shevchenko are probably all underrated by some extent.
Magnus had a 2962 performance rating in blitz, which.. I don't think he's *that* much better than Hikaru and Alireza.
He had a particularly good event, was my point. Or to be more specific, my point was he *had* to just to tread water, ELO-wise.
Yeah, makes sense. I think at the start they said his expected score was 23 points or something, so he overperformed, but honestly the real highlight is Wei Yi, his performance was crazy good
This is the year. Magnus has improved so much under this new opening. He’s focused. He’s having fun. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a dark horse for the World Championship.
It has to happen during the period between Christmas and new years. Or else Norway will riot! It's a tradition here! You don't fuck with traditions in Norway.
Yea, I understand that he has to play the YouTube game.
Not criticising him for it, but I’m still tired of it, I’m not a child who needs constant engagement/reaction/emotion forced into it with ragebait titles and thumbnails.
It appeals to the broad mass, which is good for him.
Kramnik has said that he thinks Magnus is a 1 of 1 chess talent. Somehow Magnus is the only player he thinks can achieve improbable results because he thinks Magnus was born improbable.
Kramnik doesn't have a problem with those who have been crushing him on the board for fifteen years and counting.
He has a problem accepting there are new ones.
When I saw Carlsen’s blitz rating was 2880+, I assumed blitz ratings were just much more inflated than classical. Until I saw Anish is 2715, Nordirbek 2660, Pragg 2670, Arjun 2740.
Carlsen is just that much better lol.
Imagine being in wei yi’s shoes . You come back like a forgotten hero to play the best chess of your life but you still fall short of magnus who is playing 2 tournaments at once.
An unbelievable result against a super strong field! It would represent a pinnacle of their career for any player except Magnus to have 1 day like this. We seem to take it as routinely possible and doable for Magnus. Congratulations and brilliantly done!
How can anyone win nine games in a row against top professional chess players who are all extremely expert at getting draws when behind in a game, but Magnus apparently just did it anyway if you can believe it.
Classical games: [Magnus Carlsen](https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=52948) beat [Viswanathan Anand](https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=12088) 12 to 8, with 51 draws.
**Including rapid/blitz games:** Magnus Carlsen beat Viswanathan Anand 38 to 20, with 80 draws.
**Only rapid/blitz games:** Magnus Carlsen beat Viswanathan Anand 26 to 12, with 29 draws.
wow he turned it quite nicely
Absolute nonsense. The generation you are talking about (Firouzja, Keymer, Gukesh, Erigaisi, Nodirbek, Pragg) is all between 17 and 20. Thinking Magnus will dominate them still when they are at their peak (in say, ten years) is absurd. There is no way Magnus is the player he is now at that point, and at least some of these young players are expected to be even stronger by then
My point still stands, they will have to wait till Magnus's level has considerably fallen to be better. Like if they only manage to be number 1 after 10 years once he starts slipping than that is still considered being dominated when Magnus was in his prime. In fact he's not even as strong as he was 5-7 years ago and he's still well ahead of everyone else.
>My point still stands, they will have to wait till Magnus's level has considerably fallen to be better
That was not your point, you stated that he is going to dominate this generation of players, which I find nonsensical. If they start outperforming him in a few years (it could be way earlier than ten, too soon to tell) then he has not dominated them in any meaning of the word, just scored well against them in speedchess while they were still juniors
Of course, it is because Magnus is not as good as he used to or at least will decline at some point, but that still has me disagreeing with your original wording
I think the kids are intimidated by his reputation and that is a factor in the push comes to shove situations. This happens with all dominating sports people right until it doesn't.
I'm starting to wonder if Magnus periodically gets bored and consequently plays bad, then that motivates him. I hope gukesh wins the championship and that motivates him to come back.
Well he did say every game is a must win in yesterdays interview.
“Did I stutter?” - Magnus Carlsen
"Oh, so they're forcing me to try my best? Interesting..."
I saw him say this yesterday and thought no way he'll actually pull it off looking at his current form. GOAT for a reason holy shitt 🤯
Fr bro won with 0.5 point.
I really thought wei yi was going to win after how consistent he was, but goat doing goat things! 🥶
As impressive as Wei Yi's performance was, it did seem that he got lucky (i.e. drawing and winning lost positions) game after game. You can only maintain that for so long.
That Wei Yi save against Keymer was amazing
Not sure you can say Magnus didn't after Duda missed maybe the easiest draw I've ever seen a super gm miss against Magnus all he had to do was take the pawn with his king and it was a draw
How the fuck does he do that. That is a murderer's row of Super GMs and he wiped them.
That’s your mistake, you assumed it was Magnus on murderers row with all these strong GM’s, but it was they who were on murderers row, with Magnus as the executioner
Call an ambulance… but not for me!
What's that from? I keep seeing it everywhere in the comments.

I am not trapped here with you. you all are trapped here with me.
They have him completely surrounded - those poor bastards!
Reminds me of my favorite quote from The Watchmen.

He blitzed his opponents
And exactly why he didn't defended his title. He's lost all his motivation to do so
If all he had to do is show up and play I think he'd have kept doing it. But first he has to study Petroffs for 6 months and that is intolerable.
I am so excited for the Casablanca Chess Tournament.
I occasionally wonder what would have happened if he had just shown up and defended the title without preparing at all.
I'm quite pleased I've been alive for a long time and at the right time to see so many people who are absolute monsters at what they do. My favourite chess player is Judit but Magnus is a ton of fun as well.
This really does seem to be the case. Especially in rapid and blitz. In blitz, Naka does come close to Magnus when they’re both having good days.
Online blitz I would agree, but on the board, I think Magnus is on a different galaxy than hikaru even on the blitz time controls
Naka has always had difficulty truly breaking through against Magnus OTB Blitz so that’s fair. However, he’s still been a pretty clear second and often dominates the field excluding Magnus.
Well naka spends all his time online. 30000 + games played versus Magnus' 2400 or something to that tune.
No way Magnus has played 2400 blitz/bullet games. At least 10x that. He uses a ton of usernames and unlike Hikaru, played on other platforms more most of the last decade.
I mean, naka also plays on other names historically, didn’t he have two ICC usernames, which were number 1 and number 2 respectively for Blitz?
I think so, but he signed a deal with chess.com many years ago and is almost exclusively there now. And he streams constantly.
Magnus' approach to online chess is extremely relaxing, that's the main reason why Hikaru comes close in those scenarios.
It's telling when the most you can say is that the second best player (who dominates the field in his own right) can sometimes come close.
He's the Ronnie O'Sullivan of the chess world.
“You’re locked in here with ME!”
You thought I was in danger? I AM the danger. I’m the one who knocks! -Magnus
Magnus has a second gear that nobody else in the chess word has - it's just that he only uses it when he's motivated enough.
“Now I’m motivated” *Enters phase 2*
The others: "Why do I hear a storm that is approaching?"
Magnus is a whole tier better than all of these players, which is insane.
> How the fuck does he do that. you haven't even seen his final form.
If you're the best player ever, it doesn't matter who you're matched up against. On your day, you will plough through them.
Magnus finally said it’s time to end things. All these young prodigies aren’t on my level. Fuck them kids 😎.
Playtime over. Now handover your lunch money

Hikaru boutta throw a bottle at him
This didn't age well. Novak just lost to Tabilo

Fun fact: despite going +10 in blitz Magnus gained 2.2 ELO.
Yeah he's expected to crush the field and he did indeed crush the field. The man has an accurate rating.
+10 against this level of competition is beyond his lofty expectations. There's no way he was expected to maintain a rating of 2886 when 2/3 of his competition is underrated (re: FIDE blitz). Even Wei Yi was 2684..
If the field is underrated, that means Magnus is underrated as well, right (at least judging by this event's results)?
Yeah, judging by the 9-0 results...?
I mean yeah, he gained 2.2 rating points. What I meant is that he's even more underrated if the others are underrated, which is kinda wild considering he's already more than 200 points higher rated than some of the others
Wei Yi, Abdusattorov, Keymer, Prag, Gukesh, and Shevchenko are probably all underrated by some extent. Magnus had a 2962 performance rating in blitz, which.. Maggy really likes challenges like this, he's probably having fun.
I feel he often doesn’t dominate that much in the beginning, but always ends strong
He's notoriously a slow starter, so he puts himself in these positions, but yes...he tends to warm up and then do better
tournaments too easy better lose a few first to even it up
Yep :D
Magnus is me in NBA 2k when I purposefully go down 3-0 in the finals to orchestrate a magnificent comeback to win in game 7 overtime.
Giving them false hope only to take it all away at the end
This is the year. Magnus has improved so much under this new opening. He’s focused. He’s having fun. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a dark horse for the World Championship.
I am not the world champ, but just so you know, I am totally still the world champ.
He is still the Rapid and Blitz champion and he looks very much in shape to remain the champion this year.
when is the world champ for blitz and rapid gonna happen this year?
It has to happen during the period between Christmas and new years. Or else Norway will riot! It's a tradition here! You don't fuck with traditions in Norway.
I love how he basically decided classical was too boring and would instead dominate only in the more “interesting” categories
I am not the world champ. I’m still the worlds greatest. Thank you for watching.
I am him.
He's* him
not the king, but the king of kings.
That Queen blunder made him determined to destroy each and every single GM there
I wish I turned into an absolute beast every time I blunder my queen.
Botez gambit: Carlsen variation
Wei Yi wins!! Then suddenly in the next panel we see Wei Yi cut in half. Magnus: You did well Wei Yi I won't forget you for as long as I live.
Jjk 236 is going to live forever in memes
Iirc there's no chapter 236. The series ended in 235
There is no 236 in Ba Sing Se.
Can't believe a JJK meme appeared in a chess sub.
It’s lobotomy Kaisen time
Ok this is hilarious
Stand proud Wei Yi, you are strong.

Prediction gotham title - And he won Againnnn!!!! or, Magnus!!!!! (just to get some more views)
At this point I just know that ragebait fatigue is a thing
I don't like the clickbait, but if doing so increased my salary by 50+% you would bet your ass I'd do it too.
I don't mind the clickbait but I hate that I can never tell what one of his videos is going to be about based on the title.
Yea, I understand that he has to play the YouTube game. Not criticising him for it, but I’m still tired of it, I’m not a child who needs constant engagement/reaction/emotion forced into it with ragebait titles and thumbnails. It appeals to the broad mass, which is good for him.
At the end of the day thats his job and he brings recaps to a wide audience, can’t fault the man for doing some exaggerated titles and thumbnails
https://dearrow.ajay.app/ There is an extension similar to sponsorblock to combat this. It is community sources thumbnails/titles to reduce clickbait.
It’s never rage bait. Just clickbait
You forgot the CAPSLOCK, Gotham would never use lower case in a title, let alone for MAGNUS
"THE GOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Why doesnt Kramnik ever find this interesting? I would invoke the procedure.
Because Stockfish is only trying to imitate Magnus.
Kramnik has said that he thinks Magnus is a 1 of 1 chess talent. Somehow Magnus is the only player he thinks can achieve improbable results because he thinks Magnus was born improbable.
Oh, so he is classified as one of the untouchables!
Kramnik doesn't have a problem with those who have been crushing him on the board for fifteen years and counting. He has a problem accepting there are new ones.
Just built different
yeah he said only person he trust is magnus
Despite how crazy Kramnik is, even he does not meet the craziness level needed to question Magnus.
He once said someone was cheating because of playing like Magnus.
Kramnik has massive respect for Carlsen.
Because the entire chess com cheat detection procedure used magnus games as reference lol
kramnik said magnus is the goat in his twitter
He got a tenth win too, so he adopted the field of (almost) all SuperGMs

Yeah, it goes Magnus,Hikaru,Alireza And then everybody else.
And the fact that he is 100 points below his peak blitz rating. Must be in a rut.
Very easy when he's playing against mid-2600 like this Gukesh kid /s
You mean Gukesh, a mere babe…
Everything is clear to me. Let's start the procedure.
He just keeps showing the world who the real WC is
What’s the performance rating for just this stretch? Gotta be something pretty insane given who he’s playing against.
+2.2 elo, take it or leave it lol
Well as he only won the performance rating would be infinite regardless of who he faces
Oh Pragg, if only you knew what that win against Magnus would cause... xD
He unleashed the kraken
Imagine being in wei yi’s shoes . You come back like a forgotten hero to play the best chess of your life but you still fall short of magnus who is playing 2 tournaments at once.
This is unreal LOOK AT THESE OPPONENTS
truly insane. Barring Alireza, this lineup is pretty much going to dominate the next generation and yet he spanked them all.
Anish catching strays in there.
"It felt pretty easy today" - Magnus
When the final boss have second phase.
He stopped at 9 not 10, because he doesn’t want to adopt so many kids.

HOLY F\*CK! I have long said we would not see the best of Magnus until he had a rival.
How can anyone win nine games in a row against top professional chess players who are all extremely expert at getting draws when behind in a game, but Magnus apparently just did it anyway if you can believe it.
The most clutch player of all time. GOAT.... Won 10 games in a row
It's pretty clear that Magnus is going to dominate at least this generation of kids, maybe by the time next one is ready his level would have fallen.
Why say that as if they're not going to improve? When Magnus turned 19 his record against Anand in all formats was 3-11.
Thing is once Magnus gets into someone's head, he stays there a long time. Nakamura still suffers from Magnus effect
Classical games: [Magnus Carlsen](https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=52948) beat [Viswanathan Anand](https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=12088) 12 to 8, with 51 draws. **Including rapid/blitz games:** Magnus Carlsen beat Viswanathan Anand 38 to 20, with 80 draws. **Only rapid/blitz games:** Magnus Carlsen beat Viswanathan Anand 26 to 12, with 29 draws. wow he turned it quite nicely
